Help Maintain Our Wildlife Resources

OBSERVERECORDREPORT

Fish & Wildlife violationsThe unethical hunter is a threat to both wildlife and the huntingrecreation. Regulations are set for the protection of wildlife popula-tions, and those who violate these regulations damage the wildliferesources of our province. The first result is a loss of game to thelegitimate hunter. But other wildlife users suffer as well, and oftentend to blame all hunters for the actions of a few. ln this way, theunethical hunter can damage the public image of hunting, resultingin a loss as well of hunting opportunities. The Conservation Otficer is responsible for the enforcement ofWildlife Regulations, but the job is an enormous one. BritishColumbia is a large and rugged province, and many hunting activi-ties take place in remote areas. This means that offences may becommitted, and damage done, without the otfenders always beingapprehended. When this happens, both wildlife and the sport ofhunting suffer the consequences. An important goal of enforcement is the prevention of violationsbefore the damage is done. This is where you can help. The watch-ful eyes ofsportsmen throughout the province can provide a strongdeterrent to potential violators and stop wildlife otfences beforethey happen. What can you do?

Observe, Record, ReportRemember: Do NOT confront a suspected violator. You cannotmake a "citizen's arrest" or seize private property as evidence.Only a Conservation Otficer or a constable is legally authorized todo this. lnstead:

Observe:To be aware of an otfence taking place, you must familiarize your-selt with current regulations. Some common violations are:(1) Killing game during a closed season.(2) Killing female or young animals during a male only season.(3) Exceeding the daily bag limit of game, game birds or game fish.(4) Angling in closed areas.(5) Propefi damage (shooting powerline insulators, roadsigns, industrial equipment).(6) Night hunting or pitlamping.

Record:Carry a pencil and record your observations in note form as soonas you can. Photographs provide an extremely useful addition tothese observations if they can be taken without alarming the viola-tor. Take note of any features that will be of use to the enforcementotficer in his investigation. These include:(1) Time, date, location and weather conditions.(2) ldentity of violator or accurate description (size, clothing, haircolour, etc.)(3) ldentity or description of companions.

(4) Vehicle licence and description.(5) Evidence at the scene (head or viscera of animal, empty car-tridges, etc.)(6) Action of the violator(s) (number of shots, etc.)

Report:Your observations as soon as posslb/e to the nearest ConservationOfficer or to police. Telephone the toll-free number Zenith 2235where your complaint will be registered. The longer you wait, themore difficult it will be to investigate the violation.Always give your name, address and phone number to verify thatyour intentions are serious.

OBSERVE, BECOBD AND REPORTis being developed inco-operction with the

B.C. WILDLIFE FEDERATION

Huniers are reminded that the onus is on lhem to clearlyidentity the species and sex ol their target belore shooting.Every person who has a lirearm in his possession or underhis control shall exercise due care lor the salety ol otherpersons and propefi.Point lirearms at game only and never use a scope sightedrille to observe another human being.

The Fish and Wildlile Branch would appreciate the report-ing ol any tagged bird or mammal to the Fish and WlldlileBranch, Parliament Buildings, Victoria, B.C.

GAME CHECK STATIONSEach year the Fish and Wildlife Branch operates GameCheck stations on well travelled roads in order to contact alarge number of sportsmen returning from hunting. All hunt-ers, with or without game, are required by law to stop andreport at any Game Check. Sportsmen will be asked to pro-vide information about their hunting activity, including thelocation and species hunted, time spent hunting and suc-cess. Animals taken by hunters will be checked to determinesex, age and condition. Biological samples may be taken,i.e., a lower front tooth. The collected data is used to sethunting seasons and to effect good land management incooperation with other private and government agencies. These efforts assure the maintenance of your resource andyour recreation.Game Checks provide an opportunity for direct contactbetween the sportsman and the Fish and Wildlife Branch.Sportsmen are encouraged to ask questions about, or com-ment on, hunting regulations and wildlife management. Weneed to know your requirements. At certain locations, sportsmen are checked to determine their compliance withwildlife and firearms laws.

The Game Check procedure usually only takes a few min-utes, but provides valuable information that will be used formany years in developing better wildlife management strate-gies. Please take the opportunity to assist us in protectingyour wildlife and your recreational opportunities.

ADVICE TO HUNTERSRecord of Hunt

Many hunters are interested in recording their hunting experiences. The Fish and Wildlife Branch is also interested in suchinformation and each year mails out Hunter questionnaires and requires compulsory checks and reports on certain harvestedgame. We, therefore, recommend each hunter keep a record of his hunts as indicated below, and that he keep this brochure untilApril 1981 as an aid to completing his Hunter Questionnaire.
