CHIPPING NORTON TIMES

COTSWOLD TIMES

FROM THE EDITOR...

To be in this part of the world when it is looking so stunning is such a joy!

Around every corner of the road is a different view, changing every day as

the fields turn gold and the green of the trees and hedgerows darken in the

summer heat. So to have a perfect excuse to be out ‘in the view’ is heaven!

Well, here it is…. our annual Photo Competition is in the magazines this

month, a wonderful excuse to get out and about into our beautiful market

towns and villages spotting the architectural oddities, unusual artefacts and

one-off items that caught my eye when we went out a couple of weeks ago

to take the photos for this year’s competition. I hope you will enjoy identifying

the photos – and please remember than every entry could win a prize, even

the incomplete ones!

In July the magazines welcomed two work experience students from

Chipping Campden School for a week – David Harding and Rachel Silcock,

and we worked on creating a two page feature article from scratch to (almost)

print-ready in five days. Rachel and David had lots of good ideas and it was

a very enjoyable week – and you can read the finished article on pages 18

and 19.

Also in July there was a bit of a cycle ride ‘up north’ somewhere, so Bob

Forster got on his bike to do a spectators’ view of ‘Le Tour de Yorkshire’.

Meanwhile a storm of emotion has been building up about plans for a new

doctors’ surgery - the need isn’t the issue, but where it should be built. It’s

Planning matters again – in our beautiful, irreplaceable Cotswolds AONB!

As always, there is an amazing selection of things to do, see and enjoy this

month – the key is to take the opportunity and do just that.

Best Wishes

Jenni Turner, Editor

the communities where we deliver the magazines every month. But - these are not

average picture postcard images, and they may not be that easy to identify!

The Challenge...To identify the communities where the photos were taken. You will need to get out and about in our

stunning corner of the Cotswolds and look for something or somewhere which is on our doorstep - and

which you might not have noticed before! And EVERYONE can have a go!

There will be loTS of winnersfor the most correct answers of course, and for the

youngest/oldest entrant, the best family entry, the best

31st. Answer Sheets must be returned to the Editor by

Monday 2nd September 2012…please don’t be late, as

If you are in employment you should think yourself lucky, not only because you’vegot a job but also because you don’t have to pay your tax in advance. Can youimagine having to pay your tax & national insurance each month and having to pay50% extra in advance? A lot of people just get by with what’s left so theimplication of having to pay more could be disastrous. Yet those in self-assessmentare asked twice a year to stump up a payment in advance of tax that may be owed. Those in self-employment are particularly hard hit as business income may be goodone year and bad the next. I agree that the self-employed benefit from having topay tax once or twice a year but perhaps it would be fairer if a monthly paymentcould be made, based on a self-assessed figure, with a catch up figure or rebategiven once a year. The number of clients who have real difficulty in paying their taxin lump sums is increasing therefore I believe that it’s time for a radical re-think.

Earlier in the year I wrote about the “forgotten tax”, national insurance. I pointedout that our basic tax rate is really 32% rather than the 20% as most people think.I had a long conversation with one reader who is still convinced that my figure iswrong as it states quite clearly that they are paying 20% tax. For years we have allbeen conned by successive governments as not only do they not include nationalinsurance as tax but they also confuse people by setting a lower threshold fornational insurance so making people pay “tax” before they reach their personalallowance (£10,000 for 2014/15). This is as big a con as asking us mugs pay forroad tax & then spending the money on everything but potholes! It’s about timethat this anomaly is scrapped and governments come clean about how much taxwe are really paying!!

If you’re in business and you need help either speak to your accountant or give mea call, I will be happy to help in any way that I can

Burglaries in townA spate of break-ins occurred in Marlborough Road and Park Road in Chipping Norton on Tuesday1st July. Items were stolen from three cars and two garages and there was an unsuccessful attemptto burgle a house. No further incidents have been reported but the police are asking for anyone withany information about these events to call Witney Police using the non-emergency number: 101.

Hot weather security warningOpen windows and doors invite casual burglary. They generally happen quickly, and without warning. So be prepared and take care with your home security.

(Another) NEW CARE HOME TO BE BUILTLast month we wrote about the proposed conversion of Penhurst to care facilities. Since then, at the 7th July WODC planning meeting, planning permission was granted for an 80-bedcare home and 16 new houses on land by the new hospital and surgery. The Town Council had objected to the application on the grounds of "the scale and height of theproposal…. tall and overbearing on this major entrance to this market town". However, this wasinsufficient to merit refusal of the application by WODC.

One of the most common causes of complaint we hear about at the gym is backpain - it can be extremely debilitating, causing chronic tiredness, depression andirritability. Your back is a complex structure made up of bones, muscles, nerves andjoints, which can make it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. In mostcases it is not serious damage but small muscle strains, sprains or pinched nerves –even so, these can be very unpleasant and the longer these small injuries are leftuntreated, the more likelihood there is of developing a chronic back problem.

Here are some of the most common causes and what you can do to help;

1. Commuting and Computing; your back is compressed when you sit for too longso try to move as much as possible during the day, and align your spine properlywhen sitting.

2. Overdoing it at the weekend; gardening or a game of tennis when your body isn’tprepared are two common culprits. The only preventative solution here is exercise.

3. Absentmindedness; picking something up from the floor, loading the dishwasher– it’s always the simplest of things. Prevent this by teaching your body to engage itscore muscles properly .

If you do find yourself suffering, the first step is to get things checked by aprofessional to rule out any serious damage. After that, a programme of stretching, strengthening and back maintenance can work wonders for long term relief. THEWORST THING you can do is NOTHING!

In July we celebrated the end of our school’s Silver Jubilee year with theofficial opening of the Mathematics Block overseen by Mavis, ViscountessDunrossil and Geoffrey Clifton-Brown MP. Lady Dunrossil was thefounding Chair of Governors for The Cotswold School when it opened itsdoors as a new school in 1988 and has been a dedicated Governor andsupporter ever since. We also honoured three members of staff withLong Service Awards. Mrs Helen Kempson, Mr Derek Thomas and MrsJan Paish have together given more than 90 years service to educationand made an enormous contribution to the life of The Cotswold School.

Meanwhile,a team ofstudentswere atFairford AirTattoo, withDr Majorand MrHanagarth, taking part

in the Schools’ Challenge, learning about the scienceand engineering behind aircraft, marvelling at the RedArrows and catching up with HRH The Prince ofWales. The Cotswold School’s pupils were fantasticambassadors and were delighted to meet PrinceCharles, who took the time to share a joke with Year8’s George Salf (who was wearing a full bomb disposal suit at the time!)Our pupils were interviewed by BBC Radio and were a credit to theschool.

Over the summer our grounds, buildings and sports facilities are availableto our community with Cotswold District Council also running theirwonderful multi-sports days. To find out more about what is on or tomake use of the facilities we have on offer at The Cotswold School, please contact Matt Walton on [email protected] month, we wish our upper school students ‘Good Luck!’ with theupcoming GCSE and A Level Results and a very fond farewell to thosewho are moving on to exciting careers, colleges and universities. Pleasekeep in touch!

Chipping Norton School hosted a ‘Big Bang’ fair. A group of STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) ambassadorsdelivered a host of activities to inspire our students about the STEMsubjects and to encourage them to consider future careers in these areas. The Art and Technology departments held an evening exhibition thatcelebrated all the hard work of the GCSE and A level students. After twoyears it is wonderful to see a body of work that demonstrates andcelebrates the talents and creativity of our students. Whilst learning about the importance education plays in countries’development our KS3 students have created and annotated 'buddies' forthe global ‘Send My Friends to School’ campaign. They sent them toDavid Cameron to urge him to keep his promise and get all children intoschool by 2015, as agreed in the Millennium Development Goals. MrCameron replied saying “Thank you for taking the time to address thisimportant issue; it is most encouraging seeing you taking an interest in thelives of children less fortunate than yourselves."Budding geographers and historians spent 2 days in London studying itsdevelopment from a geographical and historical perspective. The studentsenjoyed a river cruise and went on the London Eye to gain a bird’s eyeview of the capital. They completed learning tasks at the Museum ofLondon and the Museum of London Docklands and also visited theOlympic Park. The Languages Department took a group of GCSE French and Germanstudents to a ‘Business meets Languages’ conference at Tudor HallSchool. During the course of the day students did a variety of activities tohighlight how languages can be used for global communication andtrading. Parents were treated to evening performances by our talented musiciansand singers at our annual Summer Soiree and both the Chipping NortonSchool Jazz Band and Revival performed at Cornbury Music Festival. The Year 7 humanities group led a World Cup-themed festival at HolyTrinity School. They taught the younger students about the host countyBrazil and then they taught them some football skills. Both sets of studentswere a huge credit to their schools and deserve huge congratulations. Congratulations are due to two of our students, Rosa Avilez and RosieCaldwell who made it to the final of the YoungFashion Designers UK final. Against stiffcompetition Rosa Avilez won first prize in the A2category and Rosie Caldwell won a highlycommended award for her work at GCSE level.Rosa has won a work placement withInkberrow Design Centre where she will designher own 6 piece capsule collection. Her workwill be showcased at many fashion events overthe next 12 months.

Sherborne Primary School have won this

year's, ' Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust'

Primary Schools Quiz. The final took place

at Eastington Village Hall on Wednesday

2nd July and is the culmination of an annual

event which runs over a period of six

months. This year over 90 schools took part

and in the final we came up against

Clearwell Church of England Primary School from the Forest of Dean

and St. James Church of England Primary School from Cheltenham.

As those taking part know, the questions are very challenging, often

baffling the audience of adults, and the quiz is always a close run

affair. The team, consisting of Ferdy, Kenny, Henry, Ellen and Amy

were delighted with the win and we are looking forward to taking part

again next year.

Sports

The Y4 and below Kwik Cricket Team also earned their place in the final, held

at Wycliffe School, Stroud in July. After winning all their group games Cold

Aston met Trinity School in the final, winning by 15 runs! The team walked

away Y4 and below County Champions, a superb ending to a successful

sporting year. Well done to all the team and parent supporters. The sports

leaders at Cotswold School put on a fun filled afternoon for Class 2 as they

attended a vast array of multisport organised and led by Cotswold pupils.

Wind in the Willows

The end of year performance was coordinated by Mrs Steckbeck who took on

the terrific tale of Wind in the Willows, after familiarising themselves with the

stage at Naunton, during the dress rehearsal the children put on a marvellous

show for family and friends. The main characters shone in the spotlight and the

remaining cast entertained and amused the audience.

Taster Days

The new reception children attended their taster mornings with Miss Hewitt.

They settled in marvellously and were welcomed by all the current children. On

the same day our Year 6 children headed off for their taster days at their

secondary schools, many of whom are heading to the Cotswold School. We

welcome all the new families to Cold Aston and wish our leavers every success

in their onward journeys. We also welcome Miss Holder to the teaching staff

along with the return of Mrs Mason from maternity leave.

Have a wonderful summer holiday and we look forward to seeing you for a

new exciting year in September.

24.10.14 Break for half term

Cold Aston C of E Primary Schoolby Katie Walker Headteacher: Miss Alexandra Symondson

As we embark on our summer break, I would like tothank all the parents, St Catharine’s Parish and the localChipping Campden community for their continued support of the schooland the children.

I would also like to take this opportunity to tell our Year 6 students, onbehalf of all the members of staff, that we are proud of them all and to bidthem farewell as they enter the next exciting chapter of their lives.Remember to keep St Catharine’s with you in your heart. We also wish Mrs Nicky Garrad (nee Monkman) a fond farewell. Aftermany years of dedicated and excellent teaching, she has been a crucialpart in the education of so many pupils and we thank her wholeheartedlyfor her contribution to the spiritual life of St Catharine’s.

Year 6 children attended an outside production of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ atBatsford Arboretum before rounding off the year with yet anotherwonderful Mrs Lovelock production - ‘Shakespeare Rocks’. The childrenworked very hard at making sure their performances were top notch, directed parts of the play, choreographed dances, re-wrote parts of thescript and also worked behind the scenes moving props, getting musicready and controlling the lighting. Mrs Lovelock thanks all who helped inpreparing the set and making costumes – a team of parents, includingPenny Lindner and Sarah Alexiou, who spent countless hours paintingthe stunning scenery. Years 3 to 6 attended useful training sessions atSKILLZONE, a state-of-the-art life-size village in Gloucester. It is a fullyinteractive learning environment to teach people of all ages how torecognise dangerous situations and stay safe. There are 16 zones, whichcovered a range of scenarios including road, rail and water safety, aninternet cafe, as well as opportunities to cover home and personal safety. It was an excellent experience for the children. Class 2 visited ‘All ThingsWild’ and had a wonderful day. They saw lots of different animals –peacocks, llamas and, it was agreed, some very cute meerkats. Therewas also time for den building, pond dipping and bug spotting and, ofcourse, the visit to the gift shop at the end! A good time was had by alland many of the children said it was the best school trip ever!Class 1spent a day at Batsford Arboretum, where they met Mr Rotavator whoguided them through nature trails as the children collected flora andfauna in little containers. They particularly enjoyed holding hands in orderto measure the width of a very large tree trunk.

The end of year BBQ and Games Evening had a wonderful atmosphereand the boys versus dads football match ran long

What a busy term we are having! The children from Year 5 and Year 6 had a

very enjoyable music day at St Andrew’s School, Chedworth. Pupils from 6

local primary schools joined for a themed day based on the Disney film

‘Rio’, the significance being the World Cup. The children dressed as birds,

performed dances and sang songs from the film, the children from Swell

sang ‘I wanna party’ a jolly rap. The production was enjoyed by very proud

parents. The following day the Year 6 children took part in the annual

Leavers Service at Gloucester Cathedral, this was followed by a

competitive game of ten pin bowling with a picnic lunch.

The year 6 children have visited The Cotswold School for their induction

days and are looking forward to starting their secondary school experience

in September. We wish them all good luck and best wishes for their future.

The Year 6 Enterprise Sale was a huge success and sell out at the Village

Coffee morning. Trade was brisk and all their home-made strawberry jam,

Elder Flower cordial and home-made cakes were a great hit with the

villagers. Over £200 was raised by the venture for school funds. The

children would like to thank parents and local residents who kindly donated

jars, bottles and strawberries. (We are planning to advise Alan Sugar on his

next series of the Apprentice!!)

The whole school completely changed setting on Thursday as the Infant

children arrived dressed in Medieval costumes. At the same time the junior

class arrived dressed as Egyptians as part of their

latest history topics. Lunch for the children took

the form of a Medieval Banquet and an Egyptian

meal. Bread was made by the junior class while

the infant class made ‘coffins’. (Don’t worry – they

are medieval pastry cases filled with sausage

meat). The children are all busy rehearsing for

their school production at the end of term and a

well-earned holiday.

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD PRIMARY SCHOOL- is a GOOD School! We had a full Ofsted inspection in June and were extremely pleased withthe outcome! The report has now been published on the Ofsted websiteso please read it if you have a chance, although here are some quotesfrom it!• ‘The pupils achieve well and make good progress in all year groups.

Their progress is particularly rapid in Reading and Maths.’• ‘Pupils behaviour and safety are good. The schools procedures for

keeping pupils safe are particularly rigorous and OUTSTANDING.’• ‘Pupils make rapid progress in reception and many have reached

above average standards before they start year 1’• ‘Pupils are polite and welcoming and considerate when working in

groups’• ‘Teachers are particularly good at planning for the range of ages and

abilities in their classes. Pupils have opportunities to work with othersof similar ability so ensuring that they make the progress of which theyare capable.’

• ‘Pupils leave the school having reached above national averagestandards in reading, writing and mathematics.’

Arriving hard on the heels of the Ofsted report are our SATS results. Weare delighted all the children entered for the year 6 SATS achieved thehigher level 5 in reading and EVERY child entered reached the expectedlevels or higher in mathematics as well. We are also very pleased withthe writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation results too. Class 1 and 2had a really lovely time at Steam in Swindon where they experienced lotsof things to do with holidays in present and olden days. They dressed upand took part in lots of activities throughout the day! Our summer fair was really well attended and raised £1,090! So thankyou to everyone who came and supported it on a rather drizzly evening. The entire school took part in the annual sponsored walk around Stowand Maugersbury. This raised £1069 for LINC Cancer charity. Theweather was good and we managed to dodge the rain for once! The Year Six pupils are on their last few days of primary school life.Although as always we are keeping them busy with a junior performance‘Hoodwinked’ a take on Robin Hood, induction day visits to theCotswold school, an axclusive sleepover at school on Thursday 17thJuly, with an evening meal together followed by an evening of activities, fun and games, sleeping (not much though!), followed by a full breakfastand a special leavers assembly on the Friday morning where all parentsand friends are invited to come in and see them peform a range of songsand anecdotes from their school life. This will also be an assembly to celebrate the Governors Awards. Theseare when pupils are nominated by any member of staff for showing greatapptitude in either Mind, Heart, Hand or Perseverance through theirschool year. We would like to take this opportunity to say a massivethank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to our school aswe are sure you will agree it is indeed a great place for our children tolearn and have fun in! Thank you.

From September 14 every child in Reception, Year 1 and 2 are entitled toa free school meal in all schools throughout the country. Many schools willfind difficulty in supplying the increased number of meals but BlockleySchool Governors and Sue Jackson, the School Business Manager madea very successful bid for extra funding from the Education FundingAgency for a complete refit of their kitchen. The work will take place in theschool holidays and will include a new cooker, extractor fans, cookerhood, dishwasher and a general upgrade of all the other kitchenequipment. So the high standard of Blockley’s delicious school meals willbe produced more easily. The school is very reluctantly loosing SueJackson to a larger school but have successfully recruited a newBusiness Manager who will start in September. During this last school year Blockley School has had many individual andteam successes in sport. Will Green, from year 6 who has played in goalfor Moreton Rangers, has successfully completed a six week induction atthe West Bromwich Regional Development Centre in Gloucester andbeen offered a place next season. Also the school is currently second inthe Primary School Games medal table behind Elmbridge School inGloucester who have over 500 pupils on roll.In May the school held scarecrow week. A letter was sent out to parentsand other organisations in Blockey asking everyone to submit ascarecrow for the completion. Classes and individuals also competed andon the final day pupils also dressed up. The creative writing which wasproduced was testiment to the idea. On June28th a Wedding Belles concert and exhibitionof historical wedding dresses was put on inthe church by the WI and, as part of it, abeautiful display was mounted by staff andpupils. The school decided that their overalltheme was something borrowed (themanikins} something blue, (Drinkwaterssupplied an enormous bouquet of blueflowers) something old (a wedding dress wornby Mrs Jeffcutt’s mother) and something newwhich was the bunting designed and made bypupils. It was a great success and the displaywas much admired by the many visitors to theconcert.

Blockley C of E SchoolFrom Jenny Bruce

The summer term has probably been one of the most hectic for us,

along with other locals schools we have taken part in music festivals,

maths challenges, rounder festivals & swimming gala’s. The weather

has been very kind and we had perfect conditions for all our outdoor

events. The sun also shone when staff and parents served

refreshments at Sezincote House in the orangery during two of their

open garden weekends. Both days were very successful and visitors

were very complementary about our homemade cakes kindly made

and donated by school staff and parents. The school BBQ was very

well supported by parents, children and villagers and we even had a

fly by from the red arrows although I’m not sure who booked them!

We are now in to our final few days with our

school production of The Pied Piper being

performed by the whole school and from

what I’ve heard, it promises to be an excellent

performance. Finally, our year 6 children will

be leaving us soon and we have a leavers

service in Longborough Church during their

penultimate day where we will wish them

luck and say goodbye. Those leaving us are (left to right) Harvey

Davis, Charlie Brady, Daisy Kerby-Smith, Millie Dash, Phoebe

Edwards & Ben Backer-Holst. Good luck and come back and see us

all soon!

This month we say a fond farewell to many students and three membersof staff whose careers collectively span almost 100 years.Year 11 students shared tears of joy and sadness as they gathered fortheir Leavers’ Assembly. There was a blast from the past as they arrivedto photos of themselves as new recruits to CCS back in Year 7 projectedon the screen. There were thoughtful gifts and kind words to thank theteachers and staff for all the support they have offered the group on theirjourney through school, and an opportunity for the tutors to share theirfond and funny memories of time shared with the students.

The celebrations didn’t end there. Year 11 had a fabulous evening at theirDinner Dance at Stratford Manor Hotel. Over 170 pupils arrived at schoolin all sorts of weird and wonderful transport with friends, families andonlookers enjoying the party atmosphere. We look forward to welcomingmany of the group back in September as they join the sixth form tocontinue their learning journey with CCS.

We have now wished Year 13 farewell. On May 23rd everyone dressed toimpress, enjoyed a celebratory assembly and a fine meal. Mrs King wouldlike to wish everyone great success in the summer and in the future. The end of term also saw the retirement of three staff; Miss Pratley joinedthe school in 1977 as a maths teacher and went on to lead thisdepartment for more than 30 years. Mr Southam joined in 1979 havingturned down the opportunity of a professional contract with Everton FC.He taught in and then led the geography department and contributed toPE and the wider pastoral life of the school. He retires as Head of KeyStage 4 having been part of the senior leadership team for over a decade. Finally, Mrs Sojka, after 18 years of committed service to the PEdepartment and the school will be retiring.

We’re nearly at the end of our school year but not yet slowing down. Thelast month or so we have been hugely energetic in the classroom andout. Some of our YR 6 children have been part of a record breakingchallenge by taking part in the BIGGEST EVER live cooking lesson. Ledby Jamie Oliver thousands of teachers and students around the worldcooked along with Jamie to make a delicious Rainbow Salad Wrap. Ourchildren received a certificate for taking part in this healthy challenge.

This month also sees our Year 6 taking part in a special leaver’s service inGloucester Cathedral. We will be sad to see them go but aretremendously proud of the mature, creative and caring young people thatthey have become. We wish them all the best for the future.

As well as looking forward like the rest of Moreton we have spent sometime looking back at the momentous events of one hundred years ago.The outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 affected manymillions of families in Moreton, in Britain and ultimately around the world. The whole school spent time last term considering how the value ofservice means helping others and can mean giving up something yourselfto help another person. Our older children were able to relate this to theidea of serving your country.

In History club we have been finding out about the men of Moreton whogave their lives for others in the war. We visited the Memorial and Churchto find the names of the soldiers. Then we used websites to help us findout more. Some lived in East Street near our school. Some were only intheir teens when they died. One of us realised straight away he wasfinding out about his great grandfather and great uncles. We discoveredthat one of the soldiers had a father born in Jamaica and a grandfatherwho was born in Belgium. It was fascinating realising that people havetravelled to Britain for centuries – not just the Romans and the Vikings! Aspart of the commemorations one of the Art galleries in Moreton ismounting an exhibition of ‘poppy’ themed art. We are really excited thatour school has been invited to take part so we are all entering. Pleaselook out for some of our work in town in early July. Finally we mustcongratulate both our Football and Netball teams. Both have taken part inoutdoor tournaments despite some atrocious weather and each team hasenjoyed great success. In football our mixed teams came away withmedals and second place. In netball we managed to secure both first andsecond positions. Brilliant!
