The 2012-13 academic year ushered in some exciting new developments for COTR International.

The launch of our five-year, $1.6 million MAISHA project in Kenya, 14 international internships, and major missions in Burkina Faso, Kenya and Tanzania kept the project office active.

Another large group of 186 international students, from 30 different countries, also studied at COTR, providing an international dimension to our campus, classrooms, and curricula.

So here is our year in review, packed with photos and graphics of what we are all about.

International Week at COTRMarch 4-8 was International Week at CoTR. our International Students created beautiful displays from their countries, dressed in traditional clothing, and even performed some traditional dances.

COTR Partnership with Kansai Gaidai University in Japanover the past five years, CoTR has welcomed 85 students from Kansai Gaidai University in Japan for a semester of English train-ing and cultural experience at COTR’s main campus. The program started in September 2008 with eleven students and has steadily grown over the years to a group of twenty students in September 2012. These students enthusiastically participate in all college activities and are eager to learn all about Canada during their four month stay, adding to the cultural richness of COTR student life.

GLST: Global Studies Graduate CertificateThe Global Studies Graduate Certificate is an interdisciplinary program area at College of the Rockies. This program is designed to help Canadian and International students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds apply their learning to international, global and intercultural situations in a variety of specialties.

Emerging Leaders of the AmericasCOTR is happy to welcome two women from the Instituto Federal de Educacao (IFBA) in Brazil, Ms. Paula Souza de oliveira and Ms. Priscilla Ferreira. Both students are participating in the Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program (ELAP) for the winter semester. This program provides scholarships to students from Latin America and the Caribbean for short-term exchange oppor-tunities for study or research at the college, undergraduate and graduate levels. Paula is currently taking courses from CoTR’s BBA program and Priscilla is taking university Transfer Studies.

International Student HomestaysFor over twenty-five years, local families have been welcoming COTR international students into their homes through the homestay program. The experience of living with a local family and participat-ing in uniquely Canadian activities and celebrations offers students the opportunity to discover Canadian culture in a very personal way. ESL students have the added benefit of practicing their English skills through real conversation.

Homestay also provides a special experience for local hosts to learn about other cultures and make lifelong friends around the world. We are so proud of the wonderful families that have hosted COTR students over the years!

Choosing to come to College of the Rockies (CoTR) was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. In october 2009 I started learning English after enrolling in COTR’s English Language Training program. This program is mainly focused on English grammar, reading, writing, and English conversation. The atmosphere in Cranbrook was comfortable, quiet and fun. I chose to study at COTR because I knew that I wanted to attend a smaller place where I could get individual attention if I needed it.

I was immediately impressed by the warm welcome I received from the host family, students, lecturers, and staff, and I knew this was where I wanted to study. The classrooms are really small, so you get a lot of individual attention from the teachers and you get to work with other students, but what I liked most about my experience in Cranbrook was people. They made me feel like they were my family. Everybody knew your name and would try to help you when you needed anything. In addition, one of the best things about studying at COTR was that I had the opportunity to meet students from all over the world.

By the end of spring in 2010, I had enough knowledge of the English language to do some traveling in Canada. I traveled in beautiful British Columbia, one of the most beautiful places in the world. When I was in Libya I heard a lot about this country but what I really saw was more beautiful than fiction.

Finally, I came to COTR with the vision of learning a new language and improv-ing my cultural knowledge; but, thanks to all of the wonderful and open-minded people I met, I learned and experienced way beyond what I had expected and I did a lot more than what I’d dreamed of when I first took the plane to Canada.

2012/13 Activities:To date, CoTR has provided training for 25 Master Trainers in CBET, Curriculum Development and Pedagogical Methods. Goal :

1. Take a 1 litre plastic bottle, fill it with water and 10 ml of bleach (to control algae).

2. Cut a hole in the roof and use silicon sealant to fix the bottle in place, leaving half above the roof-line, half below.

When sunlight hits the bottle, it’s diffused through the water and refracted throughout the room. On a bright day it is as

powerful as a standard 55watt light bulb, and can still provide ample light, even on a cloudy day.

If made and installed properly, the bottle light can last 5-10 years without any maintenance.
