What is a green building?
A green building is a structure that is
designed, built, renovated, operated,
or reused in an ecological andresource-efficient manner which
makes it a sustainable building while
reducing the overall impact to theenvironment.

Irony:
Man first clears
forests to make
space for buildings
Realizes his error
Tries to make his
buildings look like
forests!!!

Main drawbacks of green
buildings
Higher ownership costs
Additional costs: although usually
balanced by the energy savings, it is
still extra money coming out of the
pocket

Aim of our project
To compare green buildings withconventional buildings
To research and suggest ways of cost-optimization in green buildings by
innovation in construction materials
To study the Indian, regional and local
scenario in the field of green
construction

Why choose green buildings?
Energy Savings: 40% - 50%
Water Savings: 20% - 30%
Increase in productivity: 12% - 15%
Availability of fresh air: 15 cfm/person
Savings from carbon emissions: 35%
Uses natural resources efficiently,
maximizes the use of local materials
and eliminates waste

Let us bust some common myths
regarding green buildings!!!

Myths and Realities
Myth 1: Green bu i ld ings are
cost l ier
REALITY
Paradigm 1 - The incrementalcost is always relative and
depends on the extent of eco-
friendly features already
considered during design.
Operating cost works out to
80-85 % while incremental
cost, which is a onetime cost,-
-

14/36
Paradigm 2 The incremental cost in
relation to the life cycle cost.
Green buildings last for 50, 60 and
even for 100 years.
o The initial cost of a green building
might be high but typical payback
period is of 5-7 years.

Myth 2: Green bu i ld ings have to be air-conditioned
REALITY
Green building concepts can be applied for non-air
conditioning buildings. It has been applied on three
such buildings in India viz., IGP office, Gulbarga, theRoyal Engineering College, Hyderabad

Myth 3: Green bui ld ing s take
more time
REALITY
The CII-Godrej GBC building
designing took about 1.5
years while the construction
was completed in about 9
months.

Why are green buildings
smarter? Site design: Works with natural
features, protects trees, streams, soilsand parks, has effective drainage andenergy saving shade
Indoor air quality: Excludespollutant sources by using non-pollutingmaterials in construction and lets in freshair by keeping vents away from exhausts
Energy efficiency: Reducesbuildings energy requirements andgenerating energy onsite.

What else can be done?
Materials: Reduce the amountused and to reuse existing buildings or
deconstruction debris. Select materials
that dont require on-site finishing and
avoid toxic products
Waste: Reducing, reuse and recycleconstruction waste. Set up food waste
composting areas near gardens
Water: Use rainwater to irrigate orflush toilets. Put up trees to intercept
runoff. Install a green roof which would
soak up rainfall, save energy and last
longer than the traditional one.

BEWAREGREEN buildings are not asenergy-efficient as they aremade out to be, according totwo academics at the CEPT
University in Ahmedabad.Prof Miki Desai and ProfNeelkanth Chhaya said thestandards by which green-buildings are measured (evenin India) are developed in theUS, where energyconsumption is very high.
