Time has come to integrate different model components into a Earth System Modeling framework

This Community Earth System Model is a tool to integrate knowledge and to address cross-cutting issues, including the interactions between the physical climate system and biogeochemical cycles.

COSMOS benefits from experience developed by different modeling groups in Germany and abroad

Management Structure

Steering Committee Oversees the evolution of the project, provides resources, and decides on the external co-operation with other institutions.

Scientific Advisory Group Advises the project by main responsible scientists of the contributing institutions and external, independent advisors.

Co-operation agreements

• The development and verification process will involve several partners.

• Co-operation agreements shall specify the mutual obligations of the individual partners within the development and verification of COSMOS.

Guiding Principles

• The models developed in the partnership will be made available to the Scientific Community, once these models are sufficiently evaluated by the model developers.

• Working groups will be responsible for the development, integration and evaluation of the codes.  

• Working groups will be open to scientists who would like to contribute to the development or use of the model.

Guiding Principles

• The integration of the model components will be performed at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in close cooperation with the other partners

• The model will be documented and distributed through a web system maintained by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology.

Guiding Principles

A community meeting will be organized every year

(1) to review progress in model development,

(2) to plan future development,
