Be passionate about what you do or stay home. Don’t consider aesthetic medicine as a part-time endeavour to supplement income. Be committed to
the profession and take the time to learn and be suffi ciently trained to perform the delicate procedures.
It’s with this philosophy that Dr Arthur Swift has become one of the world’s most eminent and respected reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeons. From his base in Montreal, Dr Swift works hard to maintain and promote high standards within the international cosmetic surgery community.
Dr Swift lectures around the globe, and sits on a variety of advisory boards, conducts clinical research and consistently works to sustain his art. This year, his travels will bring him once again to Australia, where he’ll be presenting as a keynote speaker at the 2013 Cosmetex Conference in Melbourne.
Dr Swift sees non-surgical facial rejuvenation as vital to future growth in the aesthetic industry.
One of his greatest contributions has been his BeautiPHIcation concept; the implementation of a mathematical equation that is key to restoring symmetry and balance – thus, beauty – to the face.
Regardless of nationality, age or ethnic background, for the most part people universally share a sense of what a beautiful face is. It all rests on the mathematical ratio Phi - 1.618:1 – and is so-called as it was regularly used by the Greek sculptor Phidias.
Known by the ancient Greeks as the ‘Golden Ratio’ and Renaissance artists as the ‘Divine Proportion’, Phi has been used for thousands of years in art, music and architecture. From a Stradivarius violin to the Venus de Milo;

the Parthenon to Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man; they all have one thing in common: the Golden Ratio.
Coining the term BeautiPHIcation to describe his approach to facial beauty, Dr Swift believes that, with strategic use of dermal fi llers and neurotoxins such as Dysport and Botox, the Golden Ratio can be used to enhance facial beauty.
‘The idea of a mathematical code or formula that can describe facial beauty is not a modern concept,’ says Dr Swift. ‘The attractiveness of the female fi gure is often described in measured numbers. You might describe a woman’s body with the statistics 36-24-36, for example, so why not the face?
‘Only one mathematical relationship, however, has been consistently and repeatedly reported in beautiful things both living and man-made, and that is the Golden Ratio.’
It was on a trip to Paris with his family that BeautiPHIcation began to take shape. ‘I was with my teenage kids, walking in the Louvre,’ he recalls. ‘We began talking about how the Renaissance came to be considered the most prolifi c art era in the history of mankind.’
But why was it only a few of the artists that were painting and creating during that time became the ones revered and treasured hundreds of years later? According to Dr Swift, it’s because only these artists had the passion to take the extra step towards greatness.
‘So I began thinking about how I could extract that type of effort and the principles those artists used to really make a difference for patients,’ he recalls. ‘We are the Renaissance artists of our time. Patients are our easels, their faces our canvas. We should be creating beautiful works of art.’
This was the genesis of a three-year ‘labour of love’ that culminated in Dr Swift receiving the 2009 Medicis Cosmetic Industry Award, for his pioneering work and innovative techniques.
‘Since 2003, I have collaborated with leading Canadian dermatologist Dr Kent Remington on a comprehensive approach to non-surgical facial beautifi cation by optimising facial volume, creating harmony, symmetry and balance through re-volumising and contouring,’ he says.
‘It is my opinion that wrinkle removal should not be the end goal. Rather, a cosmetic practitioner should seek to achieve optimal facial proportion.’
Dr Swift explains that youth and beauty are exemplified by a full and wide mid-face, referred to as the ‘Triangle of Youth’. Ageing, however, results in the deflation of mid-face structures and support, tissue deterioration and the subsequent descent of the facial envelope, causing a reversal of the triangle of youth, resulting in facial disproportion.
‘The angles our features create are vital to the perception of beauty,’ he says. ‘Highlights located too high or too low detract from attractiveness.’
As his patients are increasingly demanding instant results, Dr Swift is concerned that, along with the widespread availability of cosmetic injectables, standards of training among practitioners need to be maintained. It’s with this in mind that he looks forward to presenting in Melbourne.
‘My practice, during the past several years, has seen an increasing number of patients with sub-optimal results from an earlier procedure,’ Dr Swift says.
‘We must not tolerate any compromise in patient safety or the ability to produce reliable results.’
Also fl ying to Melbourne from overseas will be Dr Rajeev Acquilla. An expert in medical aesthetics, facial contouring, volume replacement and dermatological surgery, Dr Acquilla runs two private clinics in Cheshire, UK. Dr Acquilla also resides over his own Facial Aesthetic Academy where he is recognised as an Advanced Trainer using the latest and innovative facial rejuvenation techniques from around the world.
‘My principles are grounded in the promotion of excellence, safety, science, education and not just satisfaction but delighting my patients with exceptional results,’ he says. ‘I am both proud and honoured to be asked to lecture and demonstrate at the Cosmetex 2013 congress in Melbourne.’
The focus of Dr Acquilla’s keynote presentation will be on the effective and reproducible delivery of dermal fi llers to achieve beauty, balance and harmony in the face.
‘In particular I will focus on how to achieve optimal results in the diffi cult-to-treat peri-orbtial area and to optimise lift and correction at the jawline and lower face without surgery,’ he says. ‘It will be my absolute pleasure to bring my 10 years’ experience in Cosmetic Dermatology and my role as UK Ambassador in Facial Aesthetics to Australia.’
Dr Acquilla is considered a Key Opinion Leader in the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin and dermal fi llers. In addition to speaking at domestic and international events he is actively involved in scientifi c audit, research and development of pioneering products and techniques. csbm
