or all types and sizes of businesses, theadoption of environmentally friendlypractices and the development ofenvironmentally friendly products areproving to be the right moves at the righttime. From manufacturers to retailers,“going green” is a key part of both short-term and long-term corporate plans.

The trucking industry and government areworking more closely than ever to promoteenvironmental stewardship. The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency’sSmartWay Transport Partnership— and asimilar program in Canada called CanadaFleetSmart— are establishing incentivesfor fuel efficiency improvements andgreenhouse gas emissions reductions.Primary components of the programinclude reducing all unnecessary engineidling and creating partnerships that bringthe benefits of management tools, technical support and information to fleets.Great Dane is also addressing

environmental protection challenges inits engineering and manufacturingprocesses. As the only trailer builder tohave an extensive R&D lab on premises,Great Dane uses decades of experienceand state-of-the-art computer technologyin ongoing programs to research anddevelop competitive designs incombination with engineering andmanufacturing processes that help reducethe industry’s environmental footprint.

Among the examples of how Great Daneis achieving this objective are the use oflow HAP, VOC compliant and waterbased coatings where applicable and a reduction in the amount of non-renewable resources used in trailers;the introduction of advanced productslike PunctureGuard lining and scuffmaterial and ThermoGuard lining, bothmade of recyclable materials. In addi-tion, P-101 dry freight van interiorpanels are made of recyclable plastic, and

HDPE scuffbands are made from recycledplastic containers.

At Great Dane, responsiveness tocustomer requests for trailers designed tomeet environmental initiatives are wellunderway. Collaborative efforts betweenGreat Dane, its customers and industrypartners to improve trailer aerodynamics, reduce drag and gain fuel economy arecurrently ongoing (see Inside Track:Aerodynamics, pg. 7 ).

The greening of the trucking andtransportation industry is gainingmomentum and the work being done toreach that objective is leading to therapidly increasing adoption ofenvironmentally friendly practices andtechnologies. The benefits are clear—including fuel cost savings and reduceddependence on foreign oil, and a cleanerworld for everyone.

Right Moves: Setting Goals for

Environmental Stewardship

Page 4: Corrosion Prevention Trailer Technology Options Right Moves€¦ · The trucking industry and government are working more closely than ever to promote environmental stewardship. The

rom front walls to rear doors and fromthe roofline to the road, corrosion is anever-present enemy to trailers. At GreatDane, however, proactive engineering andtrailer manufacturing with corrosionresistance in mind is addressing this problemwith a host of technologies and processes.

Great Dane has just introduced a totalcorrosion protection package, which nowincludes CorroGuard, a product that isextremely durable and resistant to de-icingchemicals, road debris, climate fluctuations, and ice and snow. Air tight and watertight, CorroGuard will not peel, crack, warp, flake or split under even the harshestof conditions, and it remains pliable overtime and will withstand impacts from road debris.

Corrosion-resistant paint products alreadyin use at Great Dane are undercoatingcompounds like Valspar’s Dry-Flex, a softand flexible film that resists stone chippingand temperature extremes while blockingmoisture from reaching the steelcomponents of the underbody. Another isValspar’s R-Cure, a two-step epoxy primerand urethane topcoat for dry freight vanrear frames and platform trailers. GreatDane also uses a specially formulated high-temperature, hot-melt wax compound oncrossmembers to effectively block corrosionby sealing steel from the environment.

Great Dane works closely with othersuppliers to provide anti-corrosionsolutions for customers. Prolam floors,Alcoa Wheel Products and Grote are justsome of the vendors joining Great Dane onthe forefront of corrosion prevention.

“Exposure to ice melting chemicals, stoneand gravel impingement, wide temperaturevariations, rain and snow all contribute toa destructive environment that requiresinnovative and advanced technology forcorrosion control,” relates Chris Stolfe,Senior ManufacturingEngineer at Great Dane.

“Great Dane is alsoworking hard todevelop newtechnologiesthat will fur-ther enhancecorrosion control,”Stolfe adds.“New coatingsare currently intesting, and otherproducts andprocesses that willprovide greatlyimproved corrosion resist-ance are also under development.”

reat Dane is taking a proactiveapproach to developing, implementingand packaging a new set of high-techcommunications options and capabilitiescurrently available on its trailers. Theseefforts have resulted from working withstrategic suppliers to provide a host ofnext generation on-board technologies.

“The idea behind the array of currentlyavailable communications technologies,”says Dan Carter, project engineer, “is todevelop solutions that are available nowand for coming generations of trailersystems. Individually, collectively and bylinking them to centralized enterprisemanagement solutions, fleets have betterknowledge of trailer operations, controlover trailer security and the ability toreduce downtime, risk and costs.”

Central to the on-board communicationssolutions on Great Dane trailers is theMeritor WABCO Enhanced Easy-StopTrailer ABS ECU with InfoLink™, aninformation gateway that allows thetractor and trailer to communicate witheach other. According to MeritorWABCO, Infolink bridges the gapbetween the vehicle and third-party

telematics devices and acts as a commandcenter that processes vital informationand sends it to computers and cell phones.

Information from the ABS ECU includesmalfunction status, diagnostics anddescriptions of stored or active faults, trailer mileage, VIN number, and userdefined service intervals. Also monitoredare brake lining wear and brake actuatorover stroke limit warnings, trailer airreservoir supply pressure with a lowpressure warning signal, trailer suspensionweight and the activation of back uplights, alarms or steer axle lockouts.

Current communications systems allowfor up to five additional on-boardapplications for data sharing. Among thelinked on-board systems available onGreat Dane trailers are the following:

• Meritor Tire Inflation System (M.T.I.S.)by P.S.I. with ThermAlert to provide thedriver warning of low tire air pressureand elevated wheel end temperatures

• QUALCOMM Trailer GPSCommunications System to offervisibility into utilization and security.

Automatic GPS location reports andalerts from cargo and door sensors canbe generated and the system can betied to a geofencing solution fordefining approved geographical areasand receiving notification if a vehiclecrosses a designated boundary. TheGPS Communications System alsoenables reefer data systems to transmitcrucial information such as unit setpoint, discharge, and return airtemperatures and fuel levels.

• Confirmation of slider pin engagementon suspension systems

Great Dane’s cutting-edge communicationsoptions represent a rolling platformhighlighting the most production-readyon-board communications technologiesin the industry. By taking advantage oftechnology that’s already available, GreatDane has made the possibilities forenhancing the productivity, efficiencyand safety of trucking operations virtually unlimited.

Great Dane’s Cutting-EdgeCommunications Options

Page 6: Corrosion Prevention Trailer Technology Options Right Moves€¦ · The trucking industry and government are working more closely than ever to promote environmental stewardship. The

eduction of diesel fuel consumptionis a critical need from both an economicand environmental perspective for alltypes of trucking operations. Rising fuelcosts, which represent one of the largestexpenses for most fleets, require thatmanufacturers make an ongoing effort tofind solutions for reducing this expense.

For many years, Great Dane has teamedwith researchers, truck manufacturers andgovernment agencies to develop practicalsolutions that can lead to fuel savings. Theproposed solutions include changes totractor-trailer designs to improve fueleconomy by reducing aerodynamic drag.Indeed, the U.S. Department of Energyreports that a 1% increase in fuel efficiencyfor long-haul trucks will result in a yearlyfuel savings of 100 million gallons of fuel, and more than 50% of energy expenditureby Class 8 trucks is in overcomingaerodynamic drag at highway speeds.

A recent manifestation of Great Dane’saerodynamics efforts is a pair ofexperimental designs developed andtested in response to customer demand. In collaboration with International Truckand Engine Corp., the OEMs have aimedto reduce fuel consumption by employingimprovements in several key areas toeffectively reduce drag. In particular, thefollowing special features have beentested in the experimental trailers:

Experimental Design #1• Side skirts (fairings), which

automatically deploy at 35 miles perhour (mph) to reduce aerodynamicdrag, but stow below 35 mph toimprove ground clearance

• A tapered aft section to help keepairflow attached to the trailer bodyand a "cavity back" that increasespressure behind the trailer; bothdetails reduce the trailer's "wake" andcontribute to reduced drag

• Reduced overall height to limitfrontal area and a dropped floorsection at the rear to restore cubic capacity

• Smooth wheel covers to reduce dragassociated with wheels and tires

• Single, wide-base tires for weight reduction

Experimental Design #2• Fixed skirts (fairings) applied nearly

the entire length of the trailer andover wheels to improve aerodynamics, particularly in the presence of crosswinds

• A tapered aft section to help keepairflow attached to the trailer bodyand a "cavity back" that increasespressure behind the trailer; bothdetails reduce the trailer's "wake" andcontribute to reduced drag

• A parabolic-shaped nose to reducethe affect of crosswinds

• Single, wide-base tires for weight reduction

Great Dane continues to work closelywith industry leaders and corporatepartners to make a difference in ourindustry and in our environment. Aslarge fleets take the initiative to change,Great Dane is prepared with decades ofexperience, R&D expertise and cutting-edge technology to providefeasible solutions.

ven customers have noticed,” says Jerry Lovell, referringto the 280 Great Dane Super LT refrigerated trailers thatjoined the R.E. Garrison Trucking Company fleet in 2006.“Many of them track loads to be sure their products aretransported at precise temperatures. In that regard, theperformance of the new Super LT reefers we’re operating hasbeen exceptional, and when customers are comfortable theirloads are being taken care of it can sell a lot of freight service.”

For Lovell, a co-owner of Cullman, Alabama-based R.E.Garrison and the executive in charge of equipment purchasing, the approximately 325 Great Dane Super LT models alreadyin the fleet – and more that have been ordered for 2007 – area perfect fit for the carrier. “Most important,” he says, “is theexceptional insulation in these trailers. We haul a lot ofproduce and the integrity of Great Dane’s urethane injectionprocess for insulating trailers creates a design that is free ofvoids. Combined with the one-piece Kemlite lining material, the design holds temperatures at desired set points.”

Lovell also says that the light weight design of the GreatDane Super LT trailers is an effective choice for R.E. Garrisonbecause it allows the carrier to handle heavy loads. “We try togross 46,000 lbs,” he explains, “so we need a trailer that isboth as light as possible but also durable. The Super LTmodels meet those criteria with their combinationof 4- and 5-inch aluminum and steel I-beamcrossmembers on 8- and 12-inch centers, andthe strong 1.38-inch deep, extrudedaluminum smooth duct floor.”

Other specifications of the GreatDane Super LT reefers atR.E. Garrison includeCarrier Ultra XLrefrigeration units andHendricksonHKANT40K slidingaxle/air suspension with

the manufacturer’s QUIK-DRAW II air-assist pin puller andSurelok dump valve. This system is very popular with drivers,Lovell relates, and especially with the 50 or more females whodrive for the carrier. In addition, eliminating the need tomanually pull pins cuts down on injuries and workers’compensation costs.

Very pleased with the Super LT trailers as well is WalterCornwell, Director of Maintenance. “We like the way they’rebuilt compared to other makes and models we’ve operated,” hesays. “In particular, the stainless steel rear frame and doorshold up very well and require minimal maintenance.”

Also specified by R.E. Garrison to help decrease maintenancecosts are the Meritor Tire Inflation System (M.T.I.S.) byP.S.I., and a Grote Long Life Light System with LED lamps.“We have not had maintenance concerns since placing thesetrailers in service,” Cornwell states. “Even if we do have anissue, though, we’re confident that Great Dane will be therefor us.”

Great Dane and its Birmingham, Alabama branch in particularget very high marks for service from Cornwell. “BubbaZaiontz, our sales representative, and all of the service and

parts people at the branch are very good to us,” hestates. “That’s the most important thing – to be ableto fall back on your suppliers after the sale – and inthat respect Great Dane is exceptional.”

With some of its 325 Great Dane Super LT reefersin service for three years, and more scheduled tojoin the fleet this year, R.E. Garrison is on its wayto replacing all of its 800 trailers with Great Danemodels. It’s planned trade cycle for the units of fiveto six years puts the company in a position to purchasenew Great Danes for many more years to come.

“To some degree shippers are judged by how theirproduct arrives at their customer’s facility,” Jerry

Lovell says. “At R.E. Garrison, we liketo say we’re ‘The

Best TruckingDecision You’llEver Make’because webelieve when acustomerentrusts theirproduct to us, weowe it to them to

provide durable,efficient and reliable

equipment.”

AlcoaDura-Bright®

Wheels with

XBR ™ Technologylcoa Wheel Products has introduced its Dura-Bright®

wheels with XBR™ technology. The new wheels replace theoriginal Dura-Bright design, and according to the companyoffer the additional advantages of 53% more reflectivity and74% more image clarity.

New Dura-Bright wheels withXBR technology feature thesame patented treatment asoriginal Dura-Bright wheels. The treatment, the companyexplains, penetrates thealuminum and becomes anintegral part of the wheel, resisting corrosion andeliminating the need forpolishing to maintain the shine, even after thousands of milesand many years of use, andhundreds of washes.

The difference between Alcoa'sDura-Bright wheels with XBRtechnology and other productsthat use surface coatings is thatthe Dura-Bright treatment won'tchip, crack, peel or corrode.

With Dura-Bright wheels with XBR technology, brake dust, grime and oil residue wash off quickly and easily with a spray ofsoap and water. The wheels also combat liquid road de-icersand chemicals. Combined, this new technology allows truckersto keep wheels looking their best with less effort than requiredfor any other steel or aluminum wheel.

Dura-Bright wheels with XBR technology also offer fleets andowner-operators all the same advantages and value of Alcoaforged aluminum wheels, including:

• Less weight for increased payload and greater fuel efficiency• Better heat dissipation for extended tire and brake life

• One-piece, forged-in-strengththat is 4.5 times stronger than steel• Higher resale value (historicallyup to $1,500 on trucks withregular Alcoa aluminum wheels, according to Alcoa)

Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels withXBR technology come with afive-year limited warrantyagainst defects in materials, workmanship and corrosion. The newest offering from thesupplier is the latest in a longline of aluminum truck, tractorand trailer wheels. Thecompany, which invented thefirst practical aluminum truck

wheel in 1948, continues to offerits latest technology – and the

widest selection of wheels and wheel accessories in theindustry – to Great Dane customers.

ShopKo’s trailer specifications also address the fleet’sdesire to eliminate as much maintenance as possible.“Our goal is to minimize service needs and only performroutine maintenance annually on our trailers,”

Tyczkowski notes. “For that reasonwe’ve specified items such as a Truck-Lite sealed wiring harness and LEDlamps, as well as the Meritor TireInflation System (M.T.I.S.) by P.S.I.”

Meritor is also the supplier ofShopKo’s TP trailer axles and itsRHP-11 slider/air suspensionpackage, as well as its EX225 discbrake package. “As a trailer ages,”Tyczkowski notes, “S-cam

bushings and slack adjusters can rust, but theMeritor disc brake is an enclosed unit, in whichall mechanisms are lubed and sealed at thefactory. In addition, frozen lower brake shoes arefairly common during colder months in this partof the country but the disc brakes are not knownfor freezing.”

Decisions like those made to adopt disc brakes area clear indicator of the forward thinking that makesShopKo such a valued customer, says RonVanderMause, VP at Trudell Trailer Sales’ GreenBay branch. “ShopKo is a very professional compa-ny managed by quality people,” he states. “Theyhave been a true business partner for many years,

and throughout our long standing partnership we’veenjoyed working with them.”

ith 135 multi-department retail anddrug stores in 13 states, ShopKo is a household name for con-sumers in a number of mid-size and large U.S. cities. Delivering awide range of goods to those locations is the company fleet of 516Great Dane insulated dry freight trailers. The operation, whichwas started 35 years ago, has exclusively operated Great Danevans since its inception.

“Shopko started specifying Great Dane trailers over 30 yearsago,” says Dan Tyczkowski, Fleet Manager of SVS/ShopKoStores, headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin. “Almost all ofthe merchandise sold in our stores is delivered by our trailersand a fleet of 38 tractors from distribution centers in Depere,Wisconsin; Omaha, Nebraska, and Boise, Idaho.

“Our high trailer to tractor ratio is due to our operatingstructure,” Tyczkowski continues. “At the highly automateddistribution centers, every door is dedicated to a store and is fedby overhead conveyors. There is a trailer at each door beingloaded, at least one trailer at every store and others in transit atall times.”

Great Dane vans in the ShopKo fleet date from 1985 to thenewest 2007 models. “We plan for a minimum of 20 years ofservice from our trailers,” Tyczkowski explains. “The newestunits in the fleet are our 41 i-Van models that were delivered inthe fall of last year as replacements for 1984 and 1985 units.”

Insulated dry vans have been a mainstay at ShopKo becausesome of the merchandise hauled in the trailers is temperaturesensitive. “With Great Dane’s help, first using insulated ClassicFreight Van models and now i-Vans designed with press-panelinsulated technology and modular wall construction, we foundthat we could protect the cargo,” Tyczkowski relates. “When it

was introduced two yearsago, we realized that the standard I-Van modelmet almost all of our needs.”

To address other considera-tions its has for trailersShopKo’s new i-Van modelsfeature Great Dane’sPunctureGuard scuff band, which helps protect walls during loading and unloading.Another concern for the fleetis corrosion because of thenorthern climates it operates in regularly.

“We spec Todco Weather Tite roll-up reardoors and stainless steel rear frames, headersand bumper assemblies to help fightcorrosion,” Tyczkowski explains. “We alsopaint upper and lower rails and installdouble Mylar tape on all steel to aluminumbottom rail connections as extra protection.

“Previously,” Tyczkowski continues, “ourtrailers were specified with a painted under-carriage to add an extra layer of corrosionprotection where road debris chips the sur-face and opens the door to moisture. On thenew I-Vans, we’ve specified Valspar’s Dry-Flexundercoating, which is flexible. It can even behit with a hammer and not expose bare metal.”

“With Great Dane, there’s never anissue, only solutions.”
