TWO HITS: Matt Fields spoiled Nick Tropeano’s complete game last night with a home run in the seventh as Northwest Arkan-sas edged Corpus Christi 1-0. The Hooks managed just two hits on the night - both singles by Enrique Hernandez. Naturals starter Kyle Zimmer left after two perfect innings due to arm stiffness. The Royals’ top prospect threw 23 pitches, 15 for strikes. Spencer Patton, Jon Keck, Sam Runion and Zach Jackson paraded out of the pen, collaborating on Corpus Christi’s eighth shutout loss of the season. Tropeano, aided by a pair of double plays, cruised thru the first six innings, allowing three hits. He got two outs to open the sev-enth. Fields then smacked a 1-1 pitch onto the berm in right-center. Tropeano was charged with six knocks and two walks. He fanned six and matched his career high with eight innings of work. Jorge Bonifacio hauled in the final out via an over-the-shoulder catch in deep right off the bat of Domingo Santana, stranding Ronny Torreyes at third.

MAX EFFORT: Nick Tropeano fashioned the first complete game of his career last night and the third for the Hooks this sea-son. The last Hooks hurler to go the distance in a losing effort was Ross Seaton last year. Seaton worked 6 frames in Game 1 of a July 18 doubleheader at Midland. The RockHounds blanked Corpus Christi 5-0. 1-0: Last night marked the 5th 1-0 result in a game involving Corpus Christi this season. The Hooks have now lost the last 2 after winning the first 3. Tulsa dispatched the Hooks 1-0 on July 1 at Whataburger Field as part of a 3-game sweep. Corpus Christi is 14-17 in 1-0 contests thru the club’s 9 seasons of play. The Hooks had been winless in 1-0 affairs on the road until this year. Corpus Christi notched a pair of victories at Midland on April 30 and May 17. Last night also resulted in the Hooks’ first 1-0 game opposite Northwest Arkansas. Corpus Christi dueled the Naturals predecessor, Wichita, to a 1-0 final on July 6, 2007 at Whataburger Field. The Hooks prevailed in what was the nightcap of a twin bill. TOUGH SLEDDING: Corpus Christi has lost 3 games in a row for the first time since July 12-14. The Hooks had won 14 of 18 leading up to this downturn. Last night, Northwest Arkansas secured Corpus Christi’s sixth series loss. The club has won 17 while splitting 12. The Hooks have been swept only twice this season - both times by Tulsa. LET’S GET SOME RUNS: Corpus Christi has managed just 1 run in this series. The club has produced 11 hits but only 2 have gone for extra bases. The Hooks struggled in the clutch during the series opener, going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring posi-tion. Of the Hooks’ 11 strikeouts, 9 occurred with men on base and 6 were stranded in scoring position. UNNATURAL: The Hooks had dominated their season series against Northwest Arkansas, winning the first 8 meetings. The Naturals have not been as cooperative over the last 3 contests, outscoring Corpus Christi 23-6. Northwest Arkansas is bat-ting .369 with 21 RBIs and 12 walks. Of the Naturals’ 38 hits, 11 have gone for extra bases. CRUZ SHIPPED TO CC: LHP Luis Cruz joins the Hooks today from Lancaster, brining Corpus Christi’s roster back to the Tex-as League limit of 25 active players. Cruz stands 8-6 with a 5.16 ERA and 2 saves in 27 outings (18 starts) for the JetHawks. He has walked 40 and struck out 129 in 113.1 IP, yielding 10 home runs and a .253 batting average against. Cruz ranks 4th in the California League in strikeouts. The 22-year-old was selected by Houston as a 9th-round pick in 2008 out of Academia Santa Monica in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
