Toshiba’s Vision is the realization of a “Human Smart Community” through an emphasis on

Energy, Storage and Healthcare. In these three areas, we will strive to resolve issues andachieve a “Safe, Secure and Comfortable Society” where people always come first.

It is no longer enough to simply provide products—we must also deliver excellent userexperiences. We will do this through the integration of products and services. We will create

new customer value attuned to the era by working with our customers.

We will create our own growth engines based on business fields and approaches unique to

Our Growth through Creativity and Innovation will be driven by diversity. Toshiba’s

commitment to ongoing globalization is reflected in a determination to enrich managementwith people offering diverse perspectives. I want to see everyone employed in Toshiba Group,

whatever their gender or nationality, pooling their ideas, clarifying issues through in-depthdiscussion, and then acting decisively. For my part, I will do all that I can to cultivate this

empowering corporate culture throughout Toshiba Group. Individual employees shouldenhance their capabilities and apply them to adding value to their business. This is the key to

ensuring Toshiba Group grows and flourishes as a truly global enterprise.

Helping people lead healthier, happier lives

Healthcare Systems & Services Group

Always eager to put Toshiba Group’s accumulated

technologies and know-how to work for people the

world over, Toshiba offers a wide array of

life-enhancing healthcare system and service

solutions. We are addressing needs in four areas:

Diagnostics & Treatment for early detection and

stress-free, patient-friendly therapy; Prevention to

reduce the risk of disease onset or ameliorate the

impact; Prognosis & Nursing Care to support

patients and their caregivers; and Health

Promotion to contribute to mental and physical

health and to the safety of food, water and air.

Our patient-friendly diagnostic imaging systems,

employing dose-reduction technologies and

contrast-agent-free imaging, facilitate early

detection of diseases. In the healthcare arena, we

are pursuing several promising themes. The

heavy-ion radiotherapy system is a powerful new

tool for non-surgical cancer treatment. Glasses-free

3D display systems are ideal for surgical planning

and securing informed consent. Our cloud service

supports seamless, large-area healthcare services.

And for monitoring patient health, alerting

healthcare professionals to the need for timely

interventions, and supporting the provision of more

effective medical and nursing care in the home, we

are readying new generations of sensing devices.

Management

Environmental Vision 2050Environmental ManagementIn “Environmental Vision 2050,” Toshiba Group envisages a

mid-century world where people lead affluent lifestyles in

harmony with the Earth. Throughout product life cycles,

from manufacture to use, to reuse and recycling, Toshiba

Group emphasizes safety, security and value creation. The

Group also strives for harmony with the Earth by working to

mitigate climate change, use resources efficiently and manage

chemicals properly, in order to reduce environmental

impacts.Toshiba is tackling global environmental issues, including

climate change and energy security, by offering highly

efficient thermal power plants and safe and secure nuclear

power plants. In parallel, we are stepping up development of

renewable energy sources, such as hydro, photovoltaic,

geothermal and wind power generation. Our overriding

objective is to ensure a stable supply of electricity while

hastening the emergence of a low-carbon society.

In order to further accelerate its initiatives for environmental

management based on the four “Green” concepts—

“Greening of Process,” “Greening of Products,” “Greening

by Technology,” and “Green Management”—as we aim to

become one of the world’s foremost eco-companies.

We continue to support the reconstruction of the Tohoku

region from the perspectives of human development,

manufacturing (industrial development), and community

development, toward helping the region and the people hit

by the disaster to recover as soon as possible. In addition, we

continue to cooperate in and support the stable maintenance

and decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear

Power Station. Toshiba has been providing university

scholarships to selected students in the Tohoku region since

fiscal 2011. With employee-organized fundraising and labor

union activities taking the lead, we continue to dispatch

volunteers to the quake-hit region. In addition, specialtygoods from the affected areas are on sale at shops in Toshiba

HQ and our factories, and local foods are used in canteen

meals. Since FY2012, as part of their initial training, new

employees of Toshiba and other Group companies assist

with shipping seaweed from Tohoku.

History and Chronology

The tireless curiosity and passion for invention of Toshiba’s

two founders are the source of Toshiba’s corporate DNA.

We continue to draw inspiration from their examples.

HISTORY

Hisashige Tanaka (1799-1881)

Hisashige Tanaka(Courtesy of Kurume City Board Education)

Known as the “genius of mechanical wonders,” Hisashige

Tanaka was one of Japan’s greatest inventors during the

late Edo (1603-1868) and early Meiji (1868-1912)

periods. His long list of inventions includes the “Man-nen

dokei” chronometer. In addition to his brilliant

craftsmanship, he was well versed in Western technologies,

including telegraphy and steam engines. In 1875, at the age

of 76, he opened a shop-cum-factory in Ginza, Tokyo, that

manufactured various devices, most notably telegraph

equipment. This is recognized as the origin of Toshiba.

Ichisuke Fujioka (1857-1918)

The “father of electricity in Japan,”

Ichisuke Fujioka’ s pioneered Japanese

research into electric lighting. He met

Thomas Edison when visiting the United

States on a Japanese government mission

and on his return devoted himself to the

development of Japan’s first incandescent

lamps. Fujioka founded a company,

Hakunetsu-sha, in 1890, to manufacture

light bulbs.

Ichisuke Fujioka, one of Toshiba’s founders, penned this calligraphywhile still a boy of 10. Pronounced as shizen in Japanese, the characters translate

as “the greatest good,” a concept that remained the lifelong credo

of Fujioka, a man of integrity who always wanted to be of service to people.

The same impulse to work for the benefit of society is

an integral part of the DNA of Toshiba Group.
