Corporate Social Responsibility 2015About corporate social responsibility at IOP Publishing (IOP)IOP has a long history of philanthropy. From the very beginning we have gift-aided our operating profit to the Institute of Physics, a thriving learned society that today has more than 50,000 international members, to directly support physics and the global scientific community.

We also make many of our publications available at no or very low cost to developing nations and have waivers in place so that researchers in developing countries can publish in our open access journals.

In 2011 we formalised our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy, and since 2012 we have focused on the following four key areas:

• Education Through our corporate partnerships with the ss Great Britain and At-Bristol, we are able to support their rich educational outreach programmes. We continue our Reading Buddies scheme at Hannah More Primary School.

• Environment Our corporate membership with Bristol Zoo and the Wild Place Project helps support a variety of important conservation initiatives at the two sites and also enables our employees to access the organisations at a significant discount.

• Arts We continue to be a business partner of the Tobacco Factory Theatres. This year we have also sponsored the Take It On Masterclasses for 11–13 year olds, engaging young people of all backgrounds with the theatre through a programme that develops their talents and personal skills.

• Community In 2015 we have supported four local initiatives through the Quartet Community Foundation (QCF), with funding for projects run by Home-Start, Community Ignite 2, Architecture Centre and Crisis Centre Ministries.

IOP is committed to supporting local charities and playing an active part in raising funds and awareness. Since 2012, IOP has adopted a Charity of the Year, in which a committee of employees run events and help spread the work about the good work that the charity does.

In 2016, IOP is pleased to support St Peter’s Hospice as its charity of the year. St Peter’s Hospice is a Bristol charity caring for adults with life-limiting illnesses that aims to improve the quality of their living and dying, while extending care and support to their families and loved ones.

IOP Charity of the Year

In 2015, employees selected mental health charity Bristol Mind and raised a grand total of £8960 through fundraising events including a “bake off” competition and cake sale, pub quizzes and a band night. Our staff member, Ben Mealing, even cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End, raising £1455 for Bristol Mind.

Employees have been inspired, committed and energetic in their fundraising efforts this year – from abseiling, to epic cycle rides, to marathons (IOP employs many runners)... as well as some serious baking!

Together, employees have raised almost £6000 for a range of charities.

IOP supported South West Dance Theatre’s event “Light – from Big Bang to VJs” to celebrate the International Year of Light. Sponsored tickets were given to Barnardos, Full Circle and the Brandon Trust. The event also raised £48 for Solar Aid, which provided 16 solar lights benefitting 70 people in Kenya.

Through the IOP volunteering initiative, employees have done more than 50 days of volunteering, in locations as near as IOP’s headquarters in Bristol, UK and down the road at Glastonbury, to as far afield as Namibia.

Volunteering

Employees have also used their professional skills to support a range of initiatives.

Payroll giving is an option within IOP’s Flexible Benefits scheme. It allows employees to make tax-free donations to a registered charity of their choice, and the charity receives the full value of each donation without the need to reclaim the tax from the government.
