Highlights

The UK construction market has started to see a recovery from the deep recession our businesses have been suffering from. This has been particularly felt in our contracting and production businesses as many public clients have increased budgets for Capital works. Conversely, our service businesses are still feeling the increasing Revenue budget tightening, from far reaching debt reduction austerity measures which extend to 2018.

In the year, we made the decision to invest in a new laboratory for Jean Lefebvre (UK) at Cheshunt and located the Eurovia Contracting and Surfacing business together in one office and laboratory facility.

Continuing our commitment to Corporate Responsibility, we have seen more volunteer days from our personnel up and down the country along with increased charity sponsorship.

We are pleased to continue our success with RoSPA and our operational businesses have also picked up Considerate Constructor Awards for the management of our projects and how they interface with the community.

Through our Ringway Island Roads business, we became a four-way shareholder in the VINCI Foundation launched to support and fund various corporate responsibility private projects on the Isle of Wight.

Performance

2,042 (79% of our workforce) employees took part in a Climate Survey, telling us how safe they feel at work and highlighting areas for improvement to make things better for all. We also lowered our RIDDOR rate and achieved our target of 20% reduction on service strikes, despite the increased workload in Capital projects.

In 2014 we launched our Safety for a Reason campaign, aimed at refreshing our commitment to safety with a new engaging strapline – we asked our employees “What is your reason?”

In the year, we had a record 189 entries for the Eurovia UK 2014 Innovation Awards, an increase of 33% on the previous competition held in 2012. More than 758 people (15% of our workforce) contributed to entries. This celebration of innovation is very important to recognise and drive further improvements in our businesses, foster good engagement, participation and spirit.

In 2014, we had our Together we are Stronger conference which was then taken on the road to our divisions up and down the country. We were pleased to record that the people who attended felt they understood the key issues and vision for our business.

We know we have more to do with improving our environmental understanding and compliance, as unfortunately we saw an increase in incidents reported although that is also a function of our more open culture and better reporting.

The next three to five years for our business is all about making our businesses more sustainable, more resilient and more effective for our people, our clients and our shareholders.

We do this to share our views with the industry, communicate our activities to our clients and to inform our stakeholders. Working with local authorities for nearly 40 years, Ringway provides high-quality term maintenance and specialist highway services.

Current term maintenance service contracts include: Bracknell Forest, Milton Keynes, North Yorkshire, and Worcestershire. Adding new skills to the portfolio, in 2013 Ringway started operating two Private Finance Initiative ‘fence-to-fence’ contracts; Island Roads on the Isle of Wight and Hounslow Highways in the London Borough of Hounslow.

Eurovia Infrastructure offers a full-range of engineering solutions nationally, including civil engineering, pavement design services, asphalt production, traditional and innovative surfacing treatments and signage. Eurovia Infrastructure has a range of businesses, including Eurovia Specialist Treatments, Eurovia Contracting, Eurovia Surfacing, Eurovia Roadstone and Eurosigns.

Eurovia UK is also a major shareholder in BEAR Scotland – the Scottish integrated road service company; North Kent Roadstone – an asphalt production joint venture; Ringway Jacobs - integrated highway services; South West Highways - highway services, fleet services, civil and building project management; and Wight Building Materials – an asphalt, aggregate and ready-mix concrete production joint venture.

Part of one of the leading European providers of transport and infrastructure services, and ultimately part of VINCI SAS, Eurovia in the UK incorporates several businesses.

Eurovia UK has developed a strategy to bring together key environmental objectives which are progressed and monitored in order to support meeting the main headline targets;

• Carbon 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020*

• Water 20% reduction in mains water usage by 2020*

• Waste Zero site or construction waste sent to landfill by 2020

• Biodiversity Increase the number of staff volunteering days spent improving the environment

• Pollution Zero environmental incidents resulting in prosecution

• Materials Increase sales of sustainable materials

Sustainability & CR targets to 2020Each year Eurovia UK sets incremental targets to support improvements across the business. In 2013, 12 targets were set with 50% of them being met in 2014. Work continues to ensure the following targets are achieved;

• Engage with stakeholders on CR – Engagement with stakeholders is not currently targeted. A stakeholder event is planned for 2015/2016 to promote two-way dialogue with clients

• Liaise with key supply chain partners on CR agenda As part of the stakeholder event mentioned above, key supply chain partners will also be targeted to promote two-way dialogue

• Each division and business to complete a ‘Road Safety Day’ in 2015 To date, it has not been possible to connect with enough schools to complete this target, although headway has been made in developing links

• Reduce Lost Time Incidents to <2.5 This has not yet been achieved but the business continues to strive to meet this target

• Complete more than 300 staff volunteering days Staff across the business have completed over 200 staff volunteering days which is a steady increase but efforts will be made to ensure targets are met

Considerate Constructors Scheme

As one of the highest scoring company’s in 2014, Eurovia secured a Silver National Company award under the Considerate Constructors Scheme. Only companies who continually score highly against the scheme’s code of practice are considered for these awards.

Neil Huntington, Eurovia Regional Director, said:

This is another fantastic result for Eurovia which demonstrates to both our clients and members of the public that we are a continually developing professional organisation.

Eurovia was also awarded a certificate for ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ for the Midlands Highway Alliance (MHA) scheme at Hucknall Road in Nottingham. The certificate is awarded to sites that score highly in each of the five sections of the scheme’s code of considerate practice.

Shropshire Council and Ringway win CIHT Effective Partnership Award

Shropshire Council and Ringway won the Effective Partnerships Award for their ‘Hedge to Hedge’ service delivery in last year’s Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) awards. This specific award recognises the achievements and added value that can result from effective partnership relationships in the development and delivery of solutions.

Keith Barrow, Leader of Shropshire Council, said:

The work done by the council and Ringway here is brilliant. The new scheme is a different, much more effective and much more efficient way of working and everyone involved should be proud of their achievements – from designing the concept to actually getting out there and doing it, the work has been fantastic.

ROSPA Eurovia UK has been awarded its 12th consecutive Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) President’s Award for Occupational Health and Safety, as well as being awarded its 5th MORR Gold award for the management of road risk.

FTA Eurovia UK is a member of the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme managed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

Achilles As a supplier to many organisations across the country, signing-up to be assessed by Achilles not only provides an opportunity to work with more companies, but also gives confidence to customers.

FORS Eurovia UK was awarded a FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) Bronze certificate for excellence in fleet management. The company’s fleet operations were reviewed for efficiency, safety and sustainability.

Customer Service Award Kenny Snudden, a cleansing operative at Island Roads, was awarded the Customer Service Award at the 2014 Isle of Wight Radio Local Heroes Awards. Kenny received 28 nominations from business owners and members of the public for his helpful and cheerful attitude.

Launch of Isle of Wight Foundation In 2014, Island Roads helped to establish the Isle of Wight Foundation, a registered charitable trust focussing on combining the skills of Island Roads’ staff, together with financial assistance, to help community schemes and projects on the Island. The Foundation awards grants each year of between £3,000 and £16,000 to projects supporting two key themes; access to employment and building better communities. In 2014, nine projects were selected to receive a grants from the Isle of Wight Foundation.

Highway Excellence Awards

Ringway North Yorkshire won the environmental sustainability category in the Highways Magazine Excellence Award for its innovative ‘Wet Waste Reception Stations’.

The stations are able to dry out waste and filter usable materials, reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill sites. The stations can also recycle waste water to refill the gully tankers, reducing water consumption.

Phil Jepps, Ringway North Yorkshire Divisional Manager, said:

I am delighted that the judges have recognised the success of our new solution. The stations not only provide significant cost savings for our client, but also provide a sustainable solution for the gully cleansing operations.

The comment from the judges was:

An excellent example of recycling and significant reduction in landfill.

Working towards ‘Investors in Diversity’ Eurovia UK is working towards winning external accreditation for its work on diversity and inclusion through Investors in Diversity. The external validation provides a very useful approach to making improvements and once achieved, will sit alongside the Investors In People accreditation that the company has held for a number of years.

Job Fairs The company attends numerous careers and job fairs around the UK, in partnership with local councils and schools. This face-to-face interaction provides an opportunity to engage with potential employees and explain what the company offers.

Having worked with local authorities for nearly 40 years providing high quality term maintenance and specialist highway services, there are a wide-range of different career opportunities at Eurovia UK.

The company began offering apprenticeships more than seven years ago and the programme continues to go from strength-to-strength. In 2014, Eurovia UK had the largest single year’s intake onto its apprenticeship schemes, taking on 20 highways apprentices and a further 15 in street cleansing, street lighting or administration. An equal number have already successfully completed their apprenticeships. Eurovia UK’s ongoing commitment to the recruitment and development of young people does not end there, however. Every year the company recruits on to their graduate scheme, offers summer and year-long industry placements, as well as welcomes students from its parent company, Eurovia SAS on short work experience placements. In 2014, 15 students were welcomed on summer placements, seven on year-long industry placements and three from its parent company. The company also appointed seven graduates to its permanent graduate development scheme.

Safety

Looking after people in their place of work is the company’s highest priority and this commitment is verified by a number of awards. With nine physical abuse incidents reported by staff in 2014 alone, a new course was instigated. The course, delivered in conjunction with RAM Training, equips frontline staff with the skills and confidence required when dealing with difficult – and sometimes dangerous – situations. Focusing mainly on body language and communication skills, the course also provides some practical skills to assist staff should situations escalate to violence and is available company-wide.

Eurovia UK has increased awareness and also encourages staff to report any incidents and near misses. These have increased to over 770 separate incidents. All of these had the potential to escalate and cause injury or harm.

David Campbell, Eurovia UK Health, Safety and Environment Director, said:

As a business we realised we needed to take action and give our frontline staff the ability to deal with these situations. The course has specifically been designed for our needs and the work we do.

TrainingEurovia UK has been developing interactive training sessions for safety and also leads on the development of an industry-wide environmental training package with the HTMA (Highways Term Maintenance Association). These provide staff with an engaging avenue to update their learning around various subjects

In 2014 we refreshed our safety message and launched a new brand - Safety for a reason.

CalendarIn 2014, Eurovia UK’s company calendar centred on Corporate Responsibility related topics, such as volunteering, well being and biodiversity. Each month, a key topic was supported by a poster, tool box talk and campaign.

Our MarketplaceEurovia UK has always championed working in partnership with both clients and suppliers to not only improve the industry, but to support local communities.

The business is an active contributor to the highways and infrastructure industry working groups. These are beneficial to share knowledge and best practice for issues we all experience.

CCS - Considerate Constructors Scheme

Through the Considerate Constructors Scheme (set up in 1997 to help improve the image of the construction industry), Eurovia UK is committed to improving the image of the construction industry. In 2014, seven of the company’s schemes were awarded Performance Beyond Compliance, in recognition of achievements and high scores from the independent assessments.

David Gibby, Ringway Director, was inaugurated as the President of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) for 2014/15.

David’s theme is centred around ‘Making the Journey’ and he is particularly keen to develop four key areas:

• Making the career journey (how CIHT can support industry through professional development)

• Making transportation more accessible and diverse (focusing on improving access to transport systems and networks)

• Making the journey more reliable (improving the resilience and maintenance of infrastructure)

• Making the case for transport (highlighting the important social and economic role played by transport to stakeholders)

David Gibby said:

We all make journeys every day. CIHT will be looking at how we can make the journey better for the customers on our transport networks. We need to make the journey better, safer, healthier, more integrated and more reliable. All of this requires investment and more investment means more potential work for our business. With our expertise and range of products and services we are in an ideal position to help clients to improve and maintain their networks.

With the aim of encouraging innovation and best practice across the business, Eurovia UK holds bi-annual Innovation Awards. Prizes are awarded to those whose ideas bring benefits for both the clients and business.

Our Marketplace

EFQMEurovia UK strives for continual improvement and applies the EFQM Excellence Model and a rigorous assurance process across the whole business. Each area of the business is subject to regular EFQM assessments of performance against the model, along with annual internal audits. In 2014, the company recorded the highest average scores to date indicating the continuous improvement of systems. Assessments and audits are provided in-house by teams of professionally trained and experienced assessors and auditors who identify non-conformances, strengths and areas for improvement. Areas considered include: leadership; people; strategy; partnerships and resources; processes, products and services; customer results; people results; society results; and key performance results.

Supply chainEurovia UK continues to work closely with all suppliers to improve performance. Throughout 2014, a 360 degree review was carried out to allow suppliers to rate the company and vice versa in support of continuous improvement.

Continued support of low carbon materialsEurovia UK continues to support the use of more sustainable materials across the business, such as low carbon asphalt. The company’s asphalt plants have been enhanced to be more energy efficient whilst clients are encouraged to opt for more sustainable materials, where possible by using recycled content or lower temperature products, for example.

All suppliers are asked to sign up to the United Nations Global Compact principles.

Our CommunityEurovia UK’s strategy for community support centres around three core aims:

• Working with schools to increase awareness of engineering and highways-related careers• To improve biodiversity• To promote road safety, especially to children and schools local to work sites

As a company, Eurovia UK is keen to assist with local community projects, charities and good causes. To support this, all employees are allowed to take two fully paid volunteering days each year on local community projects. Every year the number and scale of projects is increasing, expanding the positive impact of the business on local communities.

Over the last two years, Eurovia UK has supported the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) ‘Bridges to School’ programme by visiting over 25 schools to promote the civil engineering industry. Tailored to the school age group, the presentations consist of a series of practical activities, such as block paving, bridge building and surveying.

In 2014, Eurovia UK employees supported over 30 different charities through their own fundraising

efforts, raising over £20K. Eurovia UK match-funded over £6K to support them

The Buszy, a disused bus station in central Milton Keynes, was taken over by local charity ‘Make A Difference’ and over time, the spaces within have been converted to a café, thrift shop, dance studio, event space and workshop areas for a multitude of activities – many for the benefit of disadvantaged young people.

Make A Difference, together with MK Food Bank, hold regular free hot meal events and Ringway Milton Keynes helped them create an area where vegetables and herbs could be grown to help provide a sustainable source of ingredients for use by the food bank well into the future.

Hounslow Highways’ Environment and Sustainability team cleared over 60 bags of rubbish from a woodland on Frampton Road in Hounslow. The waste was segregated and recycled too. Hounslow Highways Service Director, Rob Gillespie, said:

They have done a great job and have been clearing this area of land for a few years now, despite it not being on the project network maintained by us.

Staff from Eurovia Contracting helped Stanground Academy in Peterborough build a brand new garden for the students and wider community to enjoy.

Now able to grow their own organic fruit and vegetables, Eurovia Contracting was one of several companies to donate supplies, and also provided a construction team to install block paving pathways and benches.

Bob Sutton, Eurovia Contracts Manager, said: “We were delighted to be able to help Stanground Academy with this project. We have been able to re-use materials from our Public Realm works in Peterborough, awarded through the Midlands Highways Alliance, to help create this garden.”

Mike Schofield, Design and Technology Teacher at the school, said:

I wanted to say a huge thank you to your brilliant team and to your company as a whole. Without your valuable donations of time and materials this project would not have moved forward at such a fast pace.

Helping to clear the way

Following a plea from a local Scout Leader, some Island Roads staff members spent a day clearing the overgrown area outside an Isle of Wight scout hut. The aim of the clear-up operation was to make the area safe and suitable for scout, cub and beaver activities, such as camping.

It was great to work alongside Island Roads’ staff. Because of their efforts we have brought back into use an amenity area for young people in the village. I would like to thank the staff who gave up their time and the company for allowing them to spend the time helping us through their volunteering programme.

Our Environment

Our EnvironmentTo be truly sustainable and ensure the business remains successful, resources must be managed better. Eurovia UK improvements in environmental management are focused on waste, water, carbon, materials, pollution and biodiversity.

Vehicle UpgradesWorking in partnership with supply chain partners, the company’s fleet specifications are reviewed annually. In 2014, the company embraced lower emissions with car specifications lowered by 47kg of CO2 making the fleet more efficient than ever before. This will be followed up with more training for drivers to help reduce the amount of carbon produced.

Miles SavedIn 2014, 142,205 miles were saved through car sharing and video conferencing, saving just over 40 tonnes of CO2.

RenewablesIn 2014, 7.6% of the company’s energy came from renewable sources; either from solar panels or biomass heating. During 2014-15, a feasibility study of renewable technology will be carried out across all Eurovia UK owned properties.

No environmental enforcement or prosecutions in 2014

CEEQUAL One of Eurovia UK’s recent schemes on the A57 in Rotherham is undergoing assessment against the CEEQUAL (the sustainability assessment, rating and awards scheme for civil engineering) standard for projects. The aim is to demonstrate that sustainable practices adopted during the scheme and verified by independent assessors, have longer-lasting environmental benefits for the local community.

Strategy In 2014, Eurovia UK published a long-term strategy ‘Towards a Sustainable Future’, with targets for 2020. Based on this strategy, each business and division has identified how they will support the company objectives.

ISO 50001 Certification Eurovia UK’s head office has been independently certified to ISO 50001 for its Energy Management System by BSI. Whilst already recognised as a ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 business, a significant feature in ISO 50001 is the requirement to ‘improve the energy management system and the resulting energy performance’. ISO 50001, therefore, is a major step forward in ‘raising the bar’ by requiring the company to demonstrate improved energy performance and has resulted in a reduction in energy consumption. The system is now being rolled out to other divisions and businesses to support wider savings.

Siobhan Riordan, Eurovia UK Sustainability and CR Advisor, said:

The development of a structured energy management system has helped us align our objectives and use the information gathered to make informed choices on plans for the buildings energy use. We are already seeing reductions every month by tracking our consumption and engaging staff to be more efficient with air conditioning and lighting systems.

WasteEurovia UK has a long history of successful waste management and continues to strive towards:• Preventing waste being produced through good design, early contractor

involvement and good planning• Where waste cannot be prevented, explore options of reusing or recycling• Only disposing of non-recyclable waste in landfill as a last resort.

98.1% of all Eurovia UK’s waste is diverted away from landfill (or 1.9% is put in landfill).

WaterImprovements are being made in the way data is captured on water consumption through installing suitable meters across the business.

Focusing on energy management, in 2014 a month across the company was dedicated to energy management. As a result, gas and electricity consumption has reduced by 19%.
