“Koppers has made dramatic health and environmental improvements at this plant. I issued a report to management that resulted in the complete refurbishment of our duty room. We also have very strict safety equipment requirements in place and even the road to the plant has been repaved and the area beautified. Providing good working conditions is clearly a priority.”

at Koppers, we believe the well-being of our employees

and our environment go hand-in-hand. to safeguard

these precious assets, we strive for nothing less than

excellence in our sH&e practices. We value open

communication, awareness, accountability and best

practices. We encourage innovative thinking that

emphasizes responsible use of our natural resources and

byproducts and, when possible, those of our customers.

We continually seek new ways to make a positive impact

on the communities we call home.

A Business Built on reuse and

recycling

recovered byproducts of the coking

process have always been the core raw

material of Koppers business. the main

coke byproduct, crude coke oven tar, is

distilled by Koppers to produce carbon

pitch for use in the aluminum and steel

industries. other Koppers products

produced from crude coke oven tar include

roofing pitch and specialty refined tars, as

well as a variety of carbon products and

coal tar chemicals.

We also produce phthalic anhydride, which

is used in resins, plasticizers, coatings

and flame-retardants. Heavier distillates

are blended to produce creosote for

use internally in our own wood treating

facilities to pressure treat railroad crossties,

marine pilings and utility poles. Heavier

distillates are also used as carbon black

feedstock in the production of carbon

black, used in automotive tire production

and other manufacturing processes.

Finding new and innovative uses for

our own byproducts—and those of our

customers—will continue to be a top

priority for Koppers in the 21st century.

New Koppers Products Make Good

environmental Sense

We work to build quality into all Koppers

products, with the goal of conserving our

planet’s natural resources, reusing our own

byproducts and extending the life of our

customers’ end products. several examples

include:

Tanalised Ecowood (Tanalith E) is a new

wood preservative with lower toxicity

and modern organic biocides. tanalith

e protects wood from inevitable natural

destruction by insects and fungi, increasing

the service life of the wood product and

thereby reducing the number of trees that

must be harvested to replace prematurely

decaying wood.

Type B Carbon Pitch was developed for the

aluminum industry to reduce polynuclear

aromatic emissions. trials in soderberg

smelters have indicated benzo (a) pyrene

equivalents index (bei) reductions of 35-

40% when used in place of regular coal

tar pitch.

because of the very nature of our business and the potential impact

of our operations on the environment, “compliance” is only the

first in a long list of high standards to which we hold our facilities

and employees. our all-encompassing commitment to working

responsibly begins with extensive training, continuing education,

rigorous internal and external auditing and proactive improvements.

the end result is conscientious workplace practice that, in many

cases, transcends compliance.

in short, we don’t comply because it’s the law. We comply because

we believe that working responsibly on behalf of our employees and

our environment is the only way to do business. thinking bigger,

working smarter and returning resources to our operations and to

our customers that might otherwise be disposed of as waste are at

the heart of our commitment to sound environmental stewardship.

“We do more than just follow EPA guidelines for emissions detection. We proactively monitor and repair leaks before we reach even half the EPA emissions limit. And we continue to decrease the frequency of emissions by constantly upgrading our equipment and technology. In my 28 years with Koppers, I’ve seen huge improvements in our environmental practices. It’s a great thing.”

Koppers lambson: our Customers

reap the rewards of recovery & reuse

innovative reuse of our customers’ spent

products is the driving force behind

Koppers lambson limited. located at

the Koppers port clarence (UK) plant,

Koppers lambson is a global leader in the

processing of spent acids and alkalis and

the trading of bulk chemical products.

Koppers customers supply us with spent

ammonia and sulphuric acid—a far more

economical and environmentally sound

alternative to traditional landfill waste

disposal—and Koppers lambson processes

these products to create a saleable new

product: liquid ammonium sulphate, a

key ingredient in fertilizers. the plant has

a capacity to produce 110,000 tons of

ammonium sulphate per year.

Koppers lambson has also recently

undertaken a new glycerin recovery

process in which crude glycerin, produced

as a byproduct of the biodiesel and soap

industries, is distilled to produce a clean,

food-grade product for use in a variety of

personal care products.

the “cradle to grave” philosophy of

Koppers lambson allows the company

to create a mutually beneficial and

responsible interactive relationship with

our customers and suppliers. in addition,

the Koppers lambson team is highly

credentialed, with an average of almost

19 years of specialty chemical experience

per employee. in the coming months

and years, Koppers lambson is poised

to develop synergistic relationships with

additional Koppers customers as well

as other Koppers facilities around the

globe. at Koppers, we view the ability

to increasingly reprocess our customers’

spent products—as well as our own—as a

key step in achieving our ongoing goal of

unwavering environmental stewardship.

Stickney Plant recognized For

Pollution Prevention efforts

the Koppers stickney (Us) facility has been

selected as a finalist for the 2006 illinois

Governor’s pollution prevention award.

Koppers worked with technical assistance

engineers from Waste Management

& research center and Us epa’s Great

lakes national program office to identify

pollution prevention opportunities. as

an outcome of the project, Koppers

implemented an operating strategy that

minimizes the compressed air feed to the

plant’s phthalic anhydride reactors during

low production. the reduced airflow has

led to a decrease in energy consumption

by the air compressors of 4.2 million

kilowatt-hours per year, a reduction in

phthalic anhydride emissions of 1,445 lbs

per year and an increase in product yield.

Monessen Plant reuses Coking

Byproducts

the coking process by its very nature

produces byproducts and recycling

opportunities. each ton of coal that is

coked returns approximately 12,000 btU

of usable energy to the Monessen (Us)

plant’s boiler and coke oven batteries,

8-12 gallons of crude coke oven tar

which is further processed into various

carbon products and chemicals for use

in the primary metals, communication

and transportation sectors, 20-28 lbs of

ammonium sulphate for agricultural use

and 3-4 gallons of light oil used as an

octane enhancer for motor fuels.

Muncy Cogeneration Plant Focuses

on Customer Needs

Used creosote-treated railway ties

and utility poles, returned by Koppers

customers to our Muncy (Us) plant,

become a new source of energy at the

plant’s cogeneration facility. steam from

the cogeneration process is converted

to electricity, which is sold to the local

power company and used in the adjacent

wood treating plant. the result is 55,000

megawatts (5.5 million kilowatt-hours) per

year that can be resold—enough energy

to power a town of 10,000 residents.

the process is fully permitted through

the commonwealth of pennsylvania and

controlled by emissions control devices to

meet all required guidelines.

Kurnell Plant Converts Municipal Waste

into Water resource

severe draught conditions in new south Wales

prompted the Koppers continental carbon

Kurnell (australia) facility to partner with the

local government and surrounding industry to

treat and recycle municipal wastewater from

a pipeline near the Kurnell plant. to capture

and recycle more than six million liters a day,

the plant will use a reverse osmosis and ultra-

filtration process to convert the wastewater

into high-purity water for use in the plant’s

processes and boilers. Without this technology,

the wastewater would have been released into

the sea.

Newcastle Plant Soil remediation

Project A Success

Utilizing a thermal desorption unit at the

Koppers newcastle (australia) facility, more than

5,000 tons of contaminated soil were treated

and reused by the plant rather than being

disposed of as hazardous waste. even after

removing all volatile compounds in the process,

the soil’s natural structure remained intact and

the soil was reused onsite, eliminating the need

to incinerate it and replace it with new soil.

Port Clarence Plant Completes Major

Bunding Project

as part of the european Union’s stringent

control of Major accident Hazards (coMaH)

regulations, the port clarence (UK) facility

undertook a comprehensive review of all

potential major accidents that could occur

onsite. of particular concern was the possibility

of contamination of the nearby river tees in the

unlikely event of loss of containment from the

plant’s creosote storage system. plant engineers

designed a specialized bunding (diking) system,

which was extended to enclose a total of six

storage tanks although regulations mandated

the enclosing of only one. the project was

completed in 2006 without accident or incident.

Denmark Prepares environmental report

in 2006, Koppers nyborg (Denmark) plant

prepared its third environmental report. the

report summarized data relating to consumption

of resources and emissions to water, air

and as waste. the report was approved

by the environmental authority (Fyns amt)

and an independent, voluntary and binding

environmental cooperation between Funen

production enterprises (industriens Miljøklub

Fyn). in the report, objectives for the previous

year were evaluated and new objectives were

established for the current year.

South African Plant Commits to

Responsible Care®

this past year, the port shepstone

(south africa) facility pledged its

adherence to Responsible Care®,

a global initiative sponsored

locally by the chemical and

allied industries association of

south africa to oversee ongoing

improvement of the safety, health

and environmental performance

of chemical operations. open

communication with stakeholders

about products and processes is a

key part of the Responsible Care

Community Advisory Panels: our

Neighbors Speak Up

to encourage mutual communication, 12

Koppers plants in the Us have formed

community advisory panels (caps)

made up of local citizens representing a

cross-section of the community. these

individuals make a commitment to meet

with the plant management on a regular

basis to discuss any issues of concern. it is

a forum for open and honest dialogue that

builds mutual rapport, respect, trust and

confidence. plants take action to report

back on any unresolved issues in a timely

manner.

open house in Malaysia

in 2006, the Koppers arch plant in

Malaysia invited the local community to

attend a casual luncheon at its factory.

More than 90 people attended, enjoying

an opportunity to meet with the plant

managers, socialize in a family-friendly

setting and better understand Koppers

operations.

In Case of emergency: Koppers

Conducts Full-Scale Disaster exercises

in 2006, Koppers conducted multiple

successful onsite, full-scale emergency

exercises to put our employees’ learning

into action and reinforce our role as a

responsible member of the community.

these exercises also included local

emergency response agencies. exercises

encompassed a variety of scenarios,

including a trapped employee, a facility

security breach, explosions and other

potential dangers designed to prepare our

own employees and local first responders

to act effectively in the event of an actual

emergency.

Port Clarence Facility educates

youth on responsible Science

in 2006, our port clarence (UK) plant

on the river tees hosted 85 primary

school children as part of the children

challenging industry (cci) project. the

project fosters greater enthusiasm for

science and the chemical industry through

classroom-based learning coupled

with onsite learning. students covered

subjects such as ‘industry and the river

tees’, effluent water treatment and a

practical session in the laboratory where

the pupils made toothpaste.

Spotlight on North little rock:

The ABCs of Caring

Koppers partners with neighboring

encouraging parents to read with their

young children.

Corporate Giving Makes An Impact

at home and Around the World

each Koppers plant makes its own

decisions about where and how to give

back to its individual community. in our

corporate hometown of pittsburgh (Us),

Koppers is a committed donor to a variety

of arts, environmental, educational and

family services organizations. in 2006,

Koppers “adopted” the circle c youth

The Koppers ethics and Compliance

Program

Koppers management, through its ethics

and compliance program and code

of conduct, expresses the company’s

commitment to building and strengthening

a culture in which compliance is only the

beginning; where compliance and ethical

business behavior are a way of life for

every Koppers employee. the Koppers

code of conduct sets out the primary

legal and ethical policies that apply to

all employees. Whether facing questions

about conflicts of interest, antitrust

compliance, environmental, safety and

health issues or financial integrity, Koppers

employees know that the code of conduct

provides guidance and information to

help them face the difficult issues that can

confront businesses today.

ethics and Compliance Training

each year, Koppers provides training

to all employees at every level around

the world on issues relating to its ethics

and compliance program and code of

conduct. this training reinforces the

principles inherent in the code of conduct

and creates a forum in which employees

can both receive a consistent and timely

message about the company’s stance on

pertinent ethical, legal and compliance

issues and also engage in a constructive

dialog with management about these

issues. the ultimate goal of the training is to

build and strengthen Koppers compliance

culture—a culture in which compliance and

business ethics rise above being a set of

rules and procedures—a culture in which

ethics and compliance are a way of life and

a way of thinking for Koppers employees

no matter where they work.

The Compliance line and ombudsman

Koppers provides a toll-free employee

compliance line and a clear chain of

command for reporting concerns. reports

may be filed anonymously and are

reviewed and investigated promptly by

the appropriate personnel. in the United

states, we also retain an independent

outside ombudsman to serve as a contact

point for any employee wishing to report

a corporate or workplace concern. Making

sure our employees are heard in a fair

and impartial forum is at the heart of

this program.

at Koppers, ethical and honest behavior is a condition

of employment for each and every employee, without

exception. to allow our people to rise to their highest

level, both personally and professionally, Koppers strives

to foster an environment of teamwork and pride. We are

particularly proud of the unusually long tenure of our

staff, many of whom have worked with us for decades—

some as second- and third-generation employees.
