The National Railway Museum holds the UK’slargest and foremost collection of historicrailway vehicles and artefacts. Its origins canbe traced back to collections of vehiclesand objects which were preserved in thenineteenth century, and includelocomotives designed and built byengineers who pioneered the developmentof railways in Britain and beyond.

The collection contains nearly 300locomotives, carriages and wagons,including icons like the world’s fastest steam locomotive, Mallard; FlyingScotsman; and the only Shinkansen bullet train displayed outside Japan.

There are approximately 24,000 objects;over 11,000 posters; 4,650 paintings, printsand lithographs; a million engineeringdrawings; and 1.75 million photographs,together with extensive archives.
