Every day more than 100 children are bereaved of a parent in the UK. This can be one of the most devastating and traumatic experiences a child will ever face. Grief can destroy a child’s future – with your support, we can help make sure it doesn’t.

Our ambition is to double the numbers of children and young people that we support over the next five years, build a 21st century model of support that is fit for the digital age and to transform attitudes towards bereavement in childhood. Our vision is that every child can face the future with confidence and hope and lead full and flourishing lives.

There are many children we are not yet able to reach, but we won’t stop until every young person in the UK has access to help when they need it. Together, with your support, we can begin to reach more children than ever before.

In the morning I came downstairs and my dad sat me down and he just said ‘last night your mum died.’ The first thing that went through my head was that everything was going to change. Winston’s Wish has completely changed the way I look at how my mum passed away. Instead of looking at it in a sad way, I can now look at it in a happy way, but still be quite upset that she’s gone.”

Peter was 13 when his step mother died of cancer and then his father killed himself. Peter began struggling with school attendance and when he was in school he was confrontational. At home he showed aggressive outbursts and threatening behaviours toward his mother. Peter’s mother tried her best to get him to school and put in some sanctions, but she was also fearful that he would take his own life as he had threatened to do.

Our practitioners met with Peter and his mother and helped them to talk about what had happened and how they felt. After four family

sessions, Peter joined a therapeutic group with other grieving children. Each session combined activities like making memory boxes, artwork or playing games.

Six months after Peter completed the Winston’s Wish programme he was attending school full-time and postponed our follow-up visit because he wanted to concentrate on his school exams! When we did catch up with him and his mother, things had improved at home too. Peter was no longer displaying aggressive behaviour toward his mother and she no longer feared that he would harm her or take his own life.

paYroLL giVingSetting up a payroll giving scheme is a great way for you to demonstrate commitment to the causes that your employees care about. It can also aid in recruitment and retention of staff while contributing to your Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

The scheme works by simply deducting a donation directly from your employee’s salary. Best of all – it is tax free, meaning that their gifts will go even further. Payroll giving provides us with a long-term source of revenue which will enable us to plan ahead more efficiently.
