Annual Report 2017 | II
At KPMG in India, we believe that legacies are not just defined by success in terms of revenues, but by the impact we create within our communities to bring about change for the better.
It has been 25 years since the Firm began its journey in India. We have articulated our purpose in recent years, to Inspire Confidence and Empower Change. Our work to drive sustainable and inclusive development within communities is a clear example of what we cherish in line with our purpose and values. Since its inception 13 years ago, our Corporate Citizenship programme has opened several avenues for our people to understand how they can make a difference and leave their mark on impressionable lives through our efforts in education.
Education is not only a powerful tool for sustainable development, but has a direct impact on a nation’s economic progress. In the task of nation building, we consider this a critical component of our global commitment to Sustainable Development Goals. By empowering the leaders of tomorrow with skills, resources and knowledge through Lifelong Learning, we advance education, instil confidence and build capabilities for the long-term success of communities in India and around the world.
All our programmes focus on the overall development of students and improve their chances of employability. For instance, our Aspire programme benefited over 180 girls across five schools last year. Through Enactus, 40 partners and senior staff mentors had the opportunity to guide students from over 50 colleges across the country, of which Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies emerged as World Cup winners.
Driven by the purpose and commitment by our people who volunteered, we are proud to say that over 65,000 hours were clocked last year to add value to our Corporate Citizenship programme. We hope to make more meaningful additions to the programme and strive to break through prevalent barriers, prejudices and misconceptions. Every life on this planet deserves a fair chance to unearth their true potential and it is our responsibility to help them discover it.
We hope that you find this report informative. Do read about our programmes and their impact. We look forward to hearing your views on how and where we can make a bigger and lasting difference.

The future is Lifelong Learning; we live in a world of tumultuous change and innovation, and the key to success at an individual, organisational and governmental level will be defined by the capacity and capability provided through Lifelong Learning. As an organisation we are committed to inspire and empower a learning continuum. Our work with Early Childhood Development, our focused support at schools and our partnerships with global and national organisations like Junior Achievement, WE, Enactus and One Young World, help in setting the course of our journey towards making a significant impact to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. A great example of the influence we have on our communities, and specifically young learners, is the impact we are achieving through the work carried out by the KPMG Foundation in India. This is great work which we enjoy doing – it also speaks volumes
about our role in helping secure a learning culture for a generation who can lead India into the future.
Our work on early childhood development impacts the lives of young migrant children on construction sites; our programmes in schools help students build English and IT literacy; and our support for programmes like Enactus and Aspire help develop responsible, empathetic leaders. This highlights how we demonstrate our responsibility by using our knowledge, resources and skills to help accelerate development.
There is also significant impact for us. It gives our people the opportunity to discover, engage and pursue their purpose and passions as part of their careers and become real mentors and educators within Indian society.

1. The Sustainable Development Agenda, United Nations, accessed on 5 March 2018
Lifelong LearningKPMG professionals endeavour to inspire confidence and empower change that makes a sustainable difference in their communities.
Sustainable Development GoalsOn 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at a historic UN Summit - officially came into force. Over the next fifteen years, with these new Goals that universally apply to all, countries will mobilise efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.1
KPMG International has chosen to focus on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 – Quality Education, as our global Corporate Citizenship priority.
Seeing the critical role that education plays, KPMG has a clear commitment to Lifelong Learning and empowering next generation leaders.
Our programmes range from investments in early childhood development, higher education, entrepreneurship and business skills.
Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Annual Report 2017 | 3
Early childhood development is one of the most effective investments a country can make to build human capital and promote sustainable development. The care and attention a child receives in the first eight years of life – particularly during the first three years – are critical and influence the child for life.2
KPMG in India collaborates with organisations that impact the lives of young migrant children living on construction sites. These organisations set up day care centres, which focus on education, health, nutrition and overall development of a child’s social, emotional and cognitive needs in order to build a foundation for Lifelong Learning.
Care on Wheels – The customised bus that we financed, serves as a day care centre that provides education, nutrition and healthcare to children of construction workers. The bus reaches out to small
construction sites, where formal centres are difficult to establish.
Malnutrition is a serious issue in India, affecting over 40
per cent of the population’s children under the age of
five. This not only negatively impacts their overall health
and physical growth, but also hinders their ability to interact with and learn from their environment. A decline in children’s nutritional status is likely to result in an eventual
decline in their academic performance.

English language programmes
• KPMG’s Family for Literacy Programme (KFFL)
The objective of the programme is to develop reading skills at schools. This helps students express themselves more confidently and improves their comprehension and spoken English. We donate books, and our staff and their families read to young students regularly to improve their proficiency in reading.
It is a real pleasure to read stories to children at Vidya Bal Vihar School, Delhi, and
we are always welcomed with big smiles. We try and bring stories to life and encourage
their imagination. It gives us an opportunity to encourage good
morals and values.

We have set up libraries to reinforce the importance of reading:
1 2 43Setting up a bright and vibrant library
Assessing reading levels of children
Cataloguing books
Monitoring each student’s progress
Our reading programme was developed by the Hippocampus Reading Foundation at these libraries. It is a programme designed to cater to the reading needs of students by providing books
that are aligned to a child’s reading ability, instead of his/her age. The programme helps improve comprehension and in turn encourages children to read more.
Ademola BelloBritish Council Teaching Assistant, The Vidya School, Delhi NCR
Over 850 students have access to libraries at three schools
Impact numbers
The library programme has been a fantastic instrument for developing the reading and comprehension of students at Vidya School. The emphasis on reading levels has fostered a conducive environment in which students can tackle books at their own capabilities. This has allowed them to take ownership of their learning, which further encourages their development.

Impact numbers850 students benefit from the language centres at two schools
• English language centres
These centres provide a learning experience that is supported by innovative ways of teaching through technology. A software provides modules with different scenarios to help improve spoken English and comprehension of students. Each module is a combination of instructor led sessions and computer based training. The programme allows students to practise these skills and helps build vocabulary.

• Getting Ahead with English
A special programme developed by consultants who have a vast range of English teaching experience. The programme complements and structures all our other English language initiatives and focuses on lesson planning, developing interactive exercises and worksheets.
The workshops conducted under the Getting Ahead with English programme have given the teachers an opportunity to explore different methods of teaching. The lessons are taught through interactive sessions using worksheets, theatre, music and additional reading material, making it interesting for students to learn and understand.
V SuprabhaPrincipal, The Vidya School, Delhi NCR
Kiran BhattProgramme Consultant and Trainer, The Vidya School, Delhi NCR
Impact of the programme:
For first generation learners it all begins in the classroom - with their classmates and most importantly with their teacher. We need to look afresh at the whole process of English language skills development. Students are encouraged to speak in English and it is important to build an environment where it is acceptable to make mistakes.

Investing in teaching • Teacher training
Consultants conduct lessons along with teachers to help them use teaching tools such as audio visual material, theatre and music more efficiently.
• Teaching Assistants through the British Council
We collaborated with the British Council to place Teaching Assistants at three of the schools we support. They helped create an environment that encourages students to communicate in English and provide assistance to slow learners.
• Salaries of teachers
We sponsor the salaries of experienced teachers at schools we support. This helps ensure that children continue to learn from skilled instructors and also helps the school with its operational overheads.
The British Council Teaching Assistants have introduced
new innovative methods of teaching and helped formulate lesson plans.
Through media such as music, theatre and art, they have helped students improve their vocabulary, writing and speaking skills. The
students have also had the opportunity to study different
cultures, economies and political structures which has helped improve their general
awareness.

IT EducationWe have set up computer labs at schools that help students access educational material online and enhance their learning. The knowledge of basic software and use of technology to function effectively is a must-have for students.
We set up a computer lab at Gurukulam, a school run by Trust Children in Chennai, and helped them get a high speed internet connection which had been a challenge owing to the remote location of the school. This helped the school initiate a research based curriculum which encourages in-depth learning.
As opposed to studying from a text book, an online search gives students a chance to
explore a topic in various dimensions. It helps
kindle their curiosity and understand a topic well, rather than rote learning.
Promoting research based curriculum at Gurukulam, Chennai
Capt. Nandkumar Managing Trustee, Trust Children
Cybersecurity awareness at schools:
Our IT Advisory team conducted sessions on cybersecurity awareness for school students, addressing the advantages and disadvantages of using the internet, online gaming and social media. The sessions were held for students of grade 5 and above, not only at the schools we work with, but also 45 other schools in India.

Financial Literacy This programme was introduced to highlight the importance of financial planning at an early age. Our Deal Advisory team developed a training module for students from grades 5 to 12 to help build an understanding of key financial concepts systematically.
The programme encompasses a series of sessions, and the concepts covered include managing finances well, importance of savings and planning a budget.
Representatives from the Deal Advisory team during a session at The Vidya School, Delhi NCR
The Financial Literacy programme at The Vidya School provided us a great opportunity to give something back to society. Stepping out of our daily routines and spending quality time interacting with students was exciting. The students were smart, knowledge-hungry and participated well during sessions. We exchanged stories and anecdotes, explained concepts, answered puzzling questions and mulled over their priorities. Financial literacy is a continuous process and we had a good beginning; we are happy to be part of this initiative and committed to making a difference in the lives of students.

Junior Achievement (JA)JA India works with educators, industry and volunteers to help young people understand what the world of work involves and how their interests and abilities can lead them along different career paths. With an emphasis on hands-on experiential learning and interaction with real life role models
and mentors, JA students develop practical thinking, competitive skills and gain confidence to pursue their dreams.
The modules have been customised as per the age group of students, and our people volunteer to conduct these modules in classrooms.

NutritionRecognising the crucial role that nutrition plays in the development of young children, we support nutritious meals at the schools we support.
70 per cent of the new students who were
undernourished at the time of admission are healthier now as confirmed by our
doctor; this is because of the breakfast combined with
milk, eggs and fruit provided through the nutrition
programme.

Aspire programmeGirls’ education is a strategic development priority. Better educated women tend to be healthier, participate more in the formal labour market, earn higher incomes, have fewer children, marry at a later age, and enable better health care and
education for their children, should they choose to become mothers. All these factors combined can help lift households, communities, and nations out of poverty.3

Annual Report 2017 | 23
Enactus is a great platform for students to explore the needs of our society. Their level of social awareness and energy makes the entire experience enriching. As a mentor, it is very rewarding to see them become young entrepreneurs who are determined to make a difference in our community.
I believe Enactus is a platform that gives college students an opportunity to develop skills that will help them become socially responsible. It is enriching to see these young students determined to contribute to the community. As a mentor it is truly inspiring to see the effort they put in towards their projects.

I have greatly enjoyed participating in the Enactus
mentoring process over the years. The projects carried out by Enactus
teams exemplify how the students are determined and motivated to make a
difference in our community. As a mentor, I feel satisfied that this process nurtures and inculcates a feeling of responsible business
amongst the next generation leaders.

Annual Report 2017 | 25
Our people invest their time in pro bono projects, mentoring, training, cataloguing books in libraries, organising educational trips and excursions, helping raise funds through participation in marathons, storytelling under KFFL, organising carnivals and other sports events.
This year, our staff along with their families, volunteered 65,000 hours.
Our people also worked pro bono on risk management frameworks for two of the schools we support. The projects included identifying, diagnosing and prioritising risks related to budgeting and monitoring, human resources, fundraising and donor reporting, school and academic activities, finance and accounts and statutory compliance. The projects also involved recommending corrective actions and advising the schools on mitigation strategies.
Every time the team from KPMG visits us,
the ambience is full of energy. The commitment towards developing the
personality of students at OM Foundation School
has been tremendous and the precisely designed
programmes have been very effective.

When you work for society at large, no effort is small. As we all progress in life, it is our duty
to give back to society. This way we not only bring cheer to many but also create a better tomorrow for generations to come. Having
been applauded for such deeds will definitely lift our spirits even further and propel all of us
to do even better.
I also hope this recognition accentuates our efforts and those of our peers to contribute
to such causes with a greater zeal. While I am so proud of my team, this award also puts a
greater onus on us as we will now be seen as flag bearers towards bringing a positive social
change, and we are all up for it!
