Buddy led the effort to acquire Kiawah
Island from the Kuwaitis in 1988 and has
held primary responsibility for Kiawah’s
development activities, overseeing all
development operations on the Island since.
Under his guidance, Kiawah has garnered
many accolades—including the Urban Land
Institute Award for Excellence.
Buddy expanded the appeal of Kiawah
Island by leading the creation of Freshfields
Village and the development of The
Lodge at Doonbeg Golf Club in County
Clare, Ireland. His team is now focused on
Christophe Harbour, a 2,500-acre resort
community on the island of St. Kitts in the
West Indies. The project includes a Tom
Fazio-designed golf course, a five-star hotel,
and a 300-acre mega-yacht marina.
Buddy is President of the Kiawah Island
Club and a Stockholder of The Beach
Company. He’s Chairman of the Board of
the College of Charleston School of
Business Board of Governors and serves
on the Board of the Medical University of
South Carolina Children’s Hospital,

Leonard’s ties to Kiawah Island
pre-date the formation of
Kiawah Partners. He served as
Charleston County attorney
and president of the Charleston
Lawyers Club when Kiawah’s
initial rezoning application with
the Kuwait Investment Company
was negotiated in 1975. Since its
formation in 1988, Leonard has
been instrumental in all major
Kiawah Partners transactions,
overseeing team members in the
company’s legal and marketing
departments at all venues.
Leonard also serves as founder/
publisher of the award-winning
Legends magazine, now in its
22nd year. He also heads up
in-house design initiatives,
a lifelong hobby. He was
responsible for the development
of the Lodge at Doonbeg Golf
Club in Ireland and more recently,
negotiated the Development
Agreement with The Town of
Kiawah and The Federation of
St. Kitts and Nevis.
