Our Contribution, Their Development
On June 17th 2014, volunteers, Prudential Cambodia, in close partnership with Save the Children participated in another volunteering activity in Sreysanthor district, Kompong Cham Province, with lively involvement of over 100 local villagers including children and their parents in a local pagoda.
The event was a stepping stone to First Read Programme to promote literacy and numeracy in Cambodia. Seven enthusiastic staff members from PCLA set out their trip with excitement.
To begin, volunteers from Prudential Cambodia introduced a proper means for children to clean hands whilst disseminating message of hygiene and healthy eating in daily living to the audiences. The session which accompanied by live demonstration and fun jokes really enlightened the vibe. The volunteers then took turn to wash children’s hands to reinsure their message.
Other volunteers can be spotted reading story book to small children ranging mostly from 2 to 4 years old. The reading session was cheerfully noisy and full of energy.
To mark the end of the event, the volunteers joint hands to distribute the books to the locals. In total, hundreds of children books were being handed to local mothers.
Obviously, the group of 7 volunteers is without doubt small in size yet our goal is rightly aligned with the rest of staff members of PCLA who whole-heartedly believe in the message:
“Doing Well by Doing Good”.

High Turnout
at First Read Presentation
Cambodia Book Fair was organized at the National Library near Wat Phnom from November 28th to 30th, 2014. It is organized with an aim to promote reading culture among Cambodian population especially the growing number of youth who are yet to be exposed to new reading experience. The event was highly noted by national and international media as well as well-known facebook pages i.e. page of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.
As part of the contribution back to the community where it operates and it cares, Prudential Cambodia through its charitable arm the Prudence Foundation sponsored the First Read Programme. This a unique programme aimed at promoting literacy skill for early childhood. Save the Children implemented the programme and become one of the core sponsors of the Cambodia Book Fair this year.
The First Read Programme ran a booth to display published books under its scheme and organized activities with children and parents to indulge them with the interest of reading. Furthermore, Save the Children also hosted a very meaningful presentation session to educate parents and the parent-to-be and the general public on “Importance of reading with the children”. Participants to the session come from diverse backgrounds but potentially with one aim- learning how to be engage their young ones to be active and to appreciate reading.
Volunteers from Prudential Cambodia took some times of their free time at the weekend to join in this national event. It was really interesting to be able to see young children practice to sing young children song which

SAFE STEPS
SAFE STEPS has been introduced to Cambodia since the beginning of September 2014 with the free air time from CTN from 10:59 to 11:00 PM every Monday to Friday. The programme covered actions one should be taking before, during and after a disaster hit. The disaster videos series included: Fire, Flood, Typhoon, Earthquakes and Emergency Kits. In Cambodia earthquake has not been produced in local language for airing as we perceiving that the airing of this video would cause public confusion on potential earthquake.
According our discussion with CTN, the videos have received popularity and also increase viewership for CTN as well.
We are working toward more dissemination of the videos in 2015. So visit www.safesteps.com for more information.
Hon. Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Pacquiao is the natural choice to be the SAFE STEPS ambassador. He is a fighter on the ring but also educators with SAFE STEPS.
“As staff of Prudential we should know well on the contents of SAFE STEPS and be ready to support others
in our community in case of needs for assistance.”

Chevening Scholarship
Prudence Foundation has increased the amount of financial support for Chevening Scholarship for Cambodia for the year 2015-2016
We believe that it is purely good news for Cambodia and Cambodian outstanding students who wish to pursue their study in well-known universities in the UK for year 2015-2016.
Since 1997, Prudence Foundation has supported the Chevening Scholarship Programme across Asia in partnership with local British Embassies and British Councils. According to foundation, an over 100 candidates across Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam to date have benefitted from our sponsorship.
Chevening is a prestigious scholarship scheme for international students who wish to study in the United Kingdom, these scholarships are available either for masters degrees or for specially tailored three-month Business Scholarships (depending on countries).
For Cambodia, this year there were two students who were awarded ,under the support from Prudence Foundation, to study in the UK (more detailed refer to the previous publication of PCLA Connect). The Chevening Scholarships are named after Chevening House in Kent, the official country residence of the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary.
