CORNWALL LAW SOCIETY Newsletter Winter 2016 Currently there are no course or seminar dates to tell you about for spring 2017. However, arrangements are being made for the following topics to be covered and more information will follow in the first half of January 2017. Property and Commercial update Emergency First Aid at Work – 1 day course by St John Ambulance Fire Marshal Training – 4 hours by St John Ambulance St John’s Chambers of Bristol are willing to travel to Cornwall again in the spring to give a presentation on property litigation (half day) and are suggesting dates in the latter half of April. However, unless I can guarantee a minimum of 10 delegates, it will not be financially viable for the Society to arrange this seminar. A suggestion by St John’s Chambers is that the seminar be held at a venue in Truro. I would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in attending the property litigation seminar and whether your preference is the current venue of Lanhydrock Hotel, Bodmin or a venue in Truro. Wednesday CLS MLRO/Compliance Group Meeting 25 January 2017 4.00-6.00 pm Coodes, Truro Friday Cornwall Law Society Annual Dinner 24 February 2017 Headland Hotel, Newquay You will see from the above that next year’s Annual Dinner is being held at a new venue. The event is undergoing a “revamp” and it is hoped that with the new venue and different format to previous years that this will encourage many of you to buy tickets. More news to follow in the New Year!

President’s Letter

Thank you to all of those who attended the AGM on the 25th November. I have received several messages of thanks from the guests who really enjoyed the Cornish hospitality. I have only been President for a few weeks and I have already undertaken my first official engagement. I had the honour of processing through Truro, with members of the legal community, to the Legal Service at the Cathedral on the 27th November. A special prayer was given for the newly qualified solicitors and it was great to see so many in the congregation. I would highly recommend attending this event if you have the opportunity. CLS has its traditions and I am hoping to keep the traditional values but bring a more modern feeling to the society. The annual dinner in February will be at a new venue and will be a celebration of the job we do and a chance to let your hair down! I hope that it will be a night to remember and a chance to show our younger members that being part of CLS is worthwhile and great fun. The society will not survive unless we can increase the number of younger members. I am looking forward to representing you, the members of CLS, in the coming year at various events and continuing the good work of Anthony Earl. I am sure that 2017 will have various challenges and uncertainties but as a profession this is something we are all familiar with. I am aware that you are now all very busy in the run up to Christmas but I hope you all have a relaxing holiday. From myself and the committee MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Lucy Theobald President, Cornwall Law Society

CLS – Compliance Group

Our Past President Tim Goldburn, started a CLS group some years ago to assist those of us who have the difficult roles of MLRO, COLP and COFA. We recognised that working our way through this can be a bit of a minefield, with little practical resource and advice available. We meet quarterly and have together tackled a number of issues that we would individually find difficult to sort out and have shared some of the many experiences/horror stories that we have had. I think it fair to say that this collaborative approach has helped us all enormously to get the right answers for our firms, and has given us greater confidence in dealing with these things knowing there are others that we can talk things through with. I am told that people actually enjoy coming. “This group is a valuable asset I recommend to all” (Thurstan Hoskin, Solicitor) Next Meeting: Coodes - Truro Office 4.00 pm- 6.00pm on Wednesday 25 January 2017

If you wish to attend the January meeting, then please register with our Administrator – [email protected]

Sam says… “I have worked for Earl & Crocker Solicitors since I was 16 years old. I started as the Office Junior whilst studying and qualifying as a Legal Secretary. Since then, I have worked up through the CILEX qualifications and I am now an Associate Legal Executive and I am sitting my Level 6 exams, specifically Land Law in January (wish me luck). I am now a fee earner within the Probate Department at Earl & Crocker which I absolutely love. I have been brought up in Liskeard and never left. I have a little girl who will be 2 years old in March so I can often be found various soft play centres going down slides and playing in ball pools (it’s a hard life being a mum!). In between working, studying and being a mum, I also am a member of St John Ambulance and run the Liskeard Badger Sett. Being part of the Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) is about building a support network, learning new things and meeting new people. We are planning on running events this year to encourage all of these things as well as having fun! We will shortly be sending out information about the upcoming events but if you would like to join the JLD or would like more information please contact us on [email protected] or [email protected]” Elliott says… “I am currently a Trainee Solicitor at Cornwall Council, having joined in October 2015. Prior to joining the Council, I studied Law at the University of Derby and completed my LPC at the University of Plymouth. Following this, I worked as a paralegal for a National Law firm in Plymouth specialising in commercial disputes. I am loving every second of my time working in Cornwall and really value the wide range of experiences I have been exposed to whilst training at a Local Authority. I currently live in Liskeard with my girlfriend, Helen, who is also a solicitor (the arguments are thankfully few and far between). We both enjoy exploring all the beautiful scenery that Cornwall has to offer and eating at nice restaurants (Tapendades in Liskeard is great by the way). I am also an avid football fan and being from the South West I obviously support…Manchester United! I am looking forward to working with everyone involved with Cornwall Law Society and especially look forward to working with Sam in taking the Junior Lawyers Division forward. I have previously been involved with the Plymouth Junior Lawyers Division and I am excited about the opportunity to meet junior lawyers and build a strong support network within Cornwall. I am confident that there is a lot of potential for networking and knowledge sharing within Cornwall and hopefully we can do what we can to unlock some of that and also have some fun along the way. We are planning on running a variety of events over the coming months! We will shortly be sending out information about the upcoming events but if you would like to join the JLD or would like more information please contact us on [email protected] or [email protected]
