FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (12A)1 – 3 & 5 – 14 MAY
Director: Thomas Vinterberg. Starring: Carey Mulligan, Michael Sheen, Matthias Schoenaerts. USA/UK 2015. 119 mins.
Thomas Vinterberg’s (The Hunt) adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s most famous novel sees Carey Mulligan excel as Bathsheba Everdene, the headstrong, confl icted heroine courted by a distinctly disparate trio of male suitors. Michael Sheen plays the middle-aged bachelor William Boldwood, Matthias Schoenaerts the gentle shepherd
Gabriel Oak, and Tom Sturridge the dashing and dangerous soldier Sergeant Troy. Contains moderate violence and sex references.
WOMAN IN GOLD (12A)24 – 30 APRIL
Director: Simon Curtis. Starring: Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Daniel Brühl. USA/UK 2015. 109 mins.
Helen Mirren plays Jewish émigrée Maria Altmann, whose aunt was the subject of the famous Gustav Klimt portrait that was seized by the Nazis and then hung in a Viennese gallery after the war. Along with a slightly out-of-his-
depth young lawyer (Ryan Reynolds, The Voices), Altmann confronts all manner of obstacles to reclaim her rightful inheritance. Mirren is at her twinkliest but steeliest, with sterling support from Charles Dance and Daniel Brühl (Rush).
Contains infrequent strong language.

DARK HORSE: THE INCREDIBLE TRUE STORY OF DREAM ALLIANCE (PG)9 & 12 MAY
Director: Louise Osmond. UK 2014. 86 mins.
An inspirational British underdog tale in the vein of Pride and Billy Elliot, Dark Horse is a triumphant celebration of a working-class Welsh community and the horse they bred for glory. In early 2000, Jan Vokes, a barmaid in the village of Cefn Fforest, somehow persuaded a syndicate of villagers to club together and buy a thoroughbred mare, have her serviced by an ageing stallion, and stable the resulting foal on a local allotment. When a prestigious horse trainer then agreed to take on the young animal, the crazy notion of breeding a racing winner began to seem a reality. Tracing the events that followed, Dark Horse boasts all the plot twists of the most ingeniously scripted drama, combining stunning archive footage with artful reconstructions, and capturing the thrill and beauty of the plucky horse – aptly named Dream Alliance – in action.
EXHIBITION ON SCREEN: VINCENT VAN GOGH: A NEW WAY OF SEEINGFROM THE VAN GOGH MUSEUM, AMSTERDAMENCORE: 1 MAY, 19.00
Enjoying complete and unprecedented access to the treasures of Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, this brilliant fi lm also marks the 125th anniversary of Van Gogh’s death. Specially invited guests offer interpretations, explanations and exciting discoveries.
NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE: MAN AND SUPERMAN LIVE: 14 MAY, 19.00ENCORE: 2 JUNE, 19:00
Ralph Fiennes plays Jack Tanner in this exhilarating reinvention of George Bernard Shaw’s witty, provocative classic. A romantic comedy, an epic fairy tale and a fi ery philosophical debate, Man and Superman asks fundamental questions about how we live.
A LITTLE CHAOS (CERT TBC)15, 16, 20 & 21 MAY
SUITE FRANÇAISE (15)16 , 17, 19 & 20 MAY
DIOR AND I (12A)16 & 19 MAY
Director: Alan Rickman. Starring: Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Helen McCrory, Stanley Tucci. UK 2014. TBC mins.
Paris, 1682. Louis XIV (Alan Rickman) desires some gardens to complement his new palace at Versailles. When his chief architect (Matthias Schoenaerts) invites submissions from the nation’s landscapers, Sabine De Barra (Kate Winslet) throws her hat into the ring. The cast are clearly having fun in this sumptuous drama, and heartfelt relationships are nicely juxtaposed with courtly decadence, allowing the fi lm to retain a beating heart beneath its many surface pleasures.
Director: Saul Dibb. Starring: Kristin Scott Thomas, Michelle Williams, Matthias Schoenaerts. UK/France/Canada 2014. 107 mins.
Beautiful young Parisian Lucile Angellier (Michelle Williams) is anxiously awaiting news of her prisoner-of-war husband whilst lodging with her domineering mother-in-law (Kristin Scott Thomas) in a village in Burgundy. The locals are soon obliged to billet the occupying German troops, and Lucile fi nds herself falling for a handsome offi cer (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and Bone), leading inevitably to emotional confl ict and tragedy in this tense, richly visual and dramatically gratifying World War II drama.
Director: Frédéric Tcheng. Featuring: Raf Simons, Marion Cotillard, Anna Wintour. France 2014. 90 mins.
In 2012 Raf Simons became the new creative director of the legendary House of Dior. Director Frédéric Tcheng followed Raf Simons as he joined the Dior stalwarts and integrated with the charming and dedicated staff to begin designing his fi rst collection. As well as revealing couture’s sometimes archaic, sometimes idiosyncratic, always meticulous techniques, it’s a highly entertaining and good-humoured fi lm, peppered with comments and praise from celebrated fashionistas and fans.Contains infrequent strong language.
PHOENIX (CERT TBC)FROM 15 – 21 MAY
Director: Christian Petzold. Starring: Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, Nina Kunzendorf. Germany/Poland 2014. TBC mins. German with English subtitles.
Her face disfi gured by her experiences in Auschwitz, Nelly (Nina Hoss), a Jewish singer, undergoes reconstructive surgery. After the bandages are removed, Nelly searches for her husband Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld), who may have betrayed her to the Nazis. Johnny doesn’t recognise her, and asks her to impersonate the wife he believes is dead in an attempt to claim her inheritance. Director Christian Petzold’s tensely measured fi lm builds to an achingly moving fi nale.

A ROYAL NIGHT OUT (CERT TBC)22 – 24 & 26 MAY – 4 JUNE
Director: Julian Jarrold. Starring: Emily Watson, Rupert Everett, Sarah Gadon. UK 2015. TBC mins.
Brideshead Revisited director Julian Jarrold’s highly entertaining latest is based on the true story of the Princesses Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) and Margaret (Bel Powley) who successfully
went out on the town incognito on the night World War II ended in Europe. Our future queen and her sister persuade their parents to let them join the celebrations. The excitement, danger and Lizzy’s romantic adventures provide an often edgy and fi ctitiously eye-opening narrative arc.
CINDERELLA (U)22, 23 & 28 MAY
Director: Kenneth Branagh. Starring: Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Helena Bonham Carter, Hayley Atwell. USA 2015. 113 mins.
Kenneth Branagh brings Cinderella back to the big screen, blending elegant visual effects with an outstanding cast. Blanchett’s turn as the wicked stepmother nicely balances heart and vitriol, and is beautifully complemented by Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother, while Cinders is imbued with doe-eyed wonder by Lily James (Downton Abbey). The result is a thoroughly modern yet still magical fairy tale.
THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER (U)
24 & 27 MAY
Directors: Paul Tibbitt, Mike Mitchell. Voices: Tom Kenny, Antonio Banderas, Bill Fagerbakke. USA 2015. 92 mins.
Just over a decade after TV superstar SpongeBob SquarePants’s fi rst movie, the loopy sub-aquatic oddball and the Bikini Bottomites make a joyous return to the big screen. This time Bob and his best pal Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) battle to defend the Krabby Patty from their goggle-eyed nemesis, Plankton (Mr Lawrence), who’s bent on stealing its recipe. The humour is as infectious as it’s mad, and the animation
is truly a treat.
THE AGE OF ADALINE (CERT TBC)29 – 31 MAY & 3 – 4 JUNE
Director: Lee Toland Krieger. Starring: Blake Lively, Harrison Ford, Ellen Burstyn. USA 2015. TBC mins.
A rare complication after a car crash in the 1930s leaves Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively, The Town) eternally stuck at the age of 27. Chased by the authorities, she’s able only to confi de in her now elderly daughter (Ellen Burstyn). Then a chance encounter with a persistent would-be suitor sparks an uneasy confrontation with his father (Harrison Ford), who happened to fancy Adaline himself… 50 years earlier.
A romantic drama with a considerable twist.
