is a close
observer of the
urges and compulsions woven into
the texture of society. In her films she
thoughtfully and subtly shifts social
habits just a few degrees beyond nor-
mal. Her smooth camera work with
wide pans and few cuts lends familiar
scenes and everyday stories of
private life a claustrophobic feel.
In her short film Living a Beauti-
ful Life (2003, MiniDV, BetaSP, co-
lour, 13 Min.), precisely choreogra-
phed, highly aestheticized visuals
are combined with matter-of-factnarration, at first causing irr itation.
Only with the slow realization of
how banal this American family
idyll really is does the viewer
experience a light shiver.
The subtle linking of image and
text and the vexation caused by
the initially so clinical-seeming
scenes are typical characteristics
of the short films, photographs and
installations created by this artist,
who was born in 1964 in Duisburg.

in Corinna Schnitts very first v ideo,

(Hello Ms. Schnitt, 1995), the basic
constants of her work are in clear evi-dence: the film tells of our everyday
world, of the structures within which
we set up our lives, of our longings
and how we communicate. The stories
are ironically exaggerated microsce-
narios, with the camera functioning
as objective observer. Even when
Schnitt is shuttling between different
media, all of her works bear the mark
of attentive observation and empathy,
together with a clearly defined
structuring of space and the bodies
therein.
Schnitts films cling closely to the
texts that she herself writes for

pparent immediacy.second constant in Schnitts work
the connection between the nar-
ation and the (cinematic) space, the
ttempt at a concrete localization,
ften combined with a deliberate
mbivalence. In Das nchste Mal
The Next Time, 2003), two children
ying on a field talk about love. From
he dialogue, it would appear that
we are only able to communicate our
eelings using clichs: You are really
pecial to me. Then the commenta-
y breaks off and we are left with
nly the picture: the camera pulls
back further and further, until the
romantic patch of grass is revealed
to be a small green island amidst
heavily trafficked roads. The private
is entangled with the public space,
with the idyllic only possible within
the smallest possible frame.
Architecture, built-up space as
expression of a social order and the
longing for warmth and security arealso elements in Das schlafende
Mdchen (The Sleeping Girl,2001).
The camera glides in a long controlled
pan through a vacation village of
neat uniform houses. At first the
image alone evokes desires and the
realities of life. The camera closes in
on a house, peering through the win-
dow at Vermeers painting A Girl As-
leep and at the same time one hears
an insurance salesman speaking a
message on the answering machine.
While we listen, the camera performs
a measured and continuous move-
ment: from close-up to long shot and
back again; symmetry is the decisive
element here. Randomness does not
exist in Corinna Schnitts universe.
Her images are created for a static or
evenly moving camera
with controlled zooms, pans and
tracks. The motions are precisely
coordinated with the narrative;
timing is everything and it allworks perfectly. Schloss Solitude
(2002) consists as well of a planned
sequence. The camera pulls back in
one smooth movement through the
rooms of a palace. Only once outside
the building do we unexpectedly find
ourselves back in the present time.
In her most recent video, Living A
Beautiful Life (2003), an attractive
couple talks about their perfect life,
about their desires. How do you
imagine a beautiful life? : Schnitt
posed this question to American
teenagers and created her text out of
their answers. Viewers find the

while the static shots remind on
of the glossy photos in architec
magazines, or of advertisement
gned to elicit yearning for a dif
better lifestyle. Out of the idylli
scene there emerges an underc

Das O.K Centrum fr GegenwartskunstObersterreich ist ein Experimental-labor in Sachen Kunst. Enabling Art
The O.K Center for Contemporary
Art is an experimental laboratory in
matters of art. It has especially taken
up the challenges that face an insti-
tution of contemporary art today and
focuses explicitly on the production
of art works, rather than on pre-
sentation. The Artists in Residence
programs offer a mostly younger
generation of transregionally interes-ting and internationally active artists
a public platform, infrastructure
and laboratory situation in one
from the development of an artistic
idea to its implementation. The invited
artists, whose residence generally
lasts three months, are discursively
accompanied by the O.K curators
and supported by an experienced
production team.
