CNU FIELD HOCKEY 20112

Head Coach carrie MouraCarrie Moura took over a struggling Christopher Newport field hockey team in 2003 and was the fourth coach in the program’s short four-year existence. She has since built the program into one of the top Divi-sion III programs in the nation.

Moura has provided far more than consistency for CNU field hockey. She has brought a winning way that has propelled the program to national recognition The first sign of that recognition came in 2006 when the team was ranked No. 18 in the nation early in the season for the program’s first-ever national ranking. The 2006 Captains would later receive their first ever NCAA at-large bid, hosting the first round. They advanced to the Sweet 16 and elimi-nated 3-time defending National Champions Salisbury to move on to the Elite Eight.

At the end of the year the awards flowed in for Moura. She was named Na-tional Division III Coach of the Year by womensfieldhockey.com and Coach of the Year in Virginia. The program’s first ever All-American, All-Region, and State Player of the Year were chosen from the 2006 squad.

Since then, CNU has appeared in the NCAA Tournament all five years cap-turing at large bids, reaching at least the Sweet 16 four of those years. The list of All American and All Region players continues to grow along with the program’s reputation.

Moura was voted the Virginia Sports Information Directors Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2009. She is currently ranked 8th among active coaches for win percentage with .745. Moura is Level II Certified by U.S. Field Hockey and coaches Futures Elite in Region 8.

Moura is a native of Litchfield, Connecticut and a 1998 graduate of Keene State College in New Hampshire, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physi-cal Education. She also received her Master’s Degree in Educational Leader-ship in May of 2003 from Lynchburg College.

As an assistant field hockey coach at Lynchburg College in 2001 and 2002, her squads went 39-6 overall and 23-1 in conference play. She also served as head coach of the lacrosse program at Keene State College in New Hamp-shire from 1999 to 2001.

CNU FIELD HOCKEY 20114

2011 OutlOOk

Head Coach Carrie Moura and the Cap-tains begin the 2011 season ranked 12th in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll. CNu ended the 2010 season at No. 10 in the final poll after finishing 15-4 and advancing to the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight year.

The Captains are returning five seniors; Lauren Cherry, Paige Childers, Brianna Milne, Kelsey and Corey Rigby. They will be looked to for leadership on and off the field.

OpponentsThe Captains have a strong schedule with four teams ranked in the top 20 of the final 2010 poll and four teams they have yet to play. The home season opener for the Cap-tains is the #7 Seagulls of Salisbury Uni-versity which is sure to be a battle as the teams went into double overtime in 2010 with Salisbury getting the win.

After a short road trip to Fredericksburg, Va. for the Mary Washington Tournament the Captains host five straight games at Cap-tains Field to finish out September. They face Washington & Lee, Wesley, Virginia Wesleyan, Johns Hopkins and Frostburg State.

The Captains are on the road for the next two games to square off against long-time foes Mary Washington. Up next is Shenan-doah who comes back onto CNu’s oppo-nent list in 2011 as former CNU assistant, Kim Iman Bianchi, takes the helm for the Hornets.

The Captains travel to Massachusetts and New Hampshire to play #20 Rhodes and Keene State in the middle of October be-fore meeting #18 Rowan in Alexandria, Vir-

ginia. Houghton (N.Y.) and Transylvania travel to Cap-tains Field for the first time to finish the regular season.

attackJunior Chrissy Kurecki will be returning to the forward line in 2011 after starting 16 games last season and tal-lying four goals and four as-sists. Kurecki’s aggression and speed to goal breaks down the defense giving her or other teammates opportu-nities to score. Senior Paige

Childers is expected to contribute signifi-cantly on the front line with her speed and tenacity along with seniors Lauren Cherry, Kelsey Rigby, and Corey Rigby. Also com-peting for starting positions on the forward line are returners Meghan Sullivan, Hilary St. Mary, and Lindsay Hendricks. Fresh-men Belle Tunstall and Peninsula District Player of the Year Lauren Cheatham are capable of making an immediate impact on the forward line.

MidfieldJunior All-Region midfielder Caitlin Cahill is the lone returning starting and will pro-vide leadership to underclassmen filling the positions around her. Cahill was the team’s second leading scorer with eight goals and was second in assists with five. Looking for starting positions in the midfield are junior Breanne Lowe, sophomores Marcy Hoath, Marlene Lichty, Tori Kelly, and Jordan Snid-er who all saw significant playing time in 2010. Freshman Allie Hackbarth will also join the midfield.

Caitlin Cahill

DefenseAll-Region senior Brianne Milne returns to lead the Captains defensively this year. She scored four goals in 2010 and had an assist and three defensive saves. Also returning is junior Sarah Wister who scored five goals for the Captains, all of them penalty strokes. Much like 2011 All American graduate Kate-lyn Yandle, sophomore Shelby Judkins is making the transition from the forward line to defense in 2011. Her quick feet and at-tacking mentality will have her competing for a starting position. Fellow sophomores Sarah Smith, Kelsey Clark, and Chelsea Hines along with freshman Danielle Perino will round out the Captains’ defense.

In GoalSophomore Julie Collins is the lone return-ing goalkeeper and will compete with fresh-man Cait Colletti and junior transfer Jamie Dowling for the starting role.

2010 Review

The 2010 field hockey team advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecu-tive year after compiling a 15-3 record in regular season play. The Captains started the season ranked 12th in the Kookabura/National Field Hockey Coaches Associa-tion (NFHCA) Preseason poll and moved to #7 during the season before ending at #10 in the final poll.

In just their third game of the season the Captains faced defending national cham-pion and #1 ranked Salisbury university where they suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 double overtime loss. But the Captains came back to win the next 10 games to improve to 12-1 before suffering their sec-ond loss of the season to Johns Hopkins (3-2). The 10-game winning streak included victories over Lynchburg, Washington and Lee, Wesley, Washington and Mary Wash-ington.

After a pair of wins against eastern Men-nonite and Bridgewater the Captains fell to

Rowan for their final loss in regular season. They bounced back with a 6-0 win over Limestone to end the regular season.

The #10 Captains received a bid to the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive year and faced #11 Lynchburg College in the first round and fell 1-0 at home after beating the Hornets 1-0 in regular season play.

Senior defender Katelyn Yandle led the Captains with 14 goals and four assists for 34 points on the year. She also led the team with junior Brianna Milne in defensive saves with three. Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Cahill ranked second on the team in points with 21 from eight goals and five assists, including four game-winning goals.

Junior goalkeeper Brittany Bradsher played all but 49 minutes in the cage for the Cap-tains and compiled 102 saves and only al-lowed 17 goals for a save percentage of .857, ranking her fourth in all of Division III for save percentage.

TOMLIN STATS

TOMLIN Q&AWhat are you doing now?“I am now a graduate assistant working towards my M.B.A. at the University of Mary Washington for the field hockey team.”

What is your best field hockey memory at CNU?“My best memory with the team, on the field, would be beating Lynchburg my senior year. Off the field, I guess all of the hanging out with the team is always a good time!”

What advice would you give to current players and incoming freshmen? “My advice would be to just work hard and have fun!”

21CNU FIELD HOCKEY 2011

plAying aT CNU

CNU field hockey is heading to the Olympics in the United Kingdom the summer of 2012!

The Captains have been hosting camps and clinics for three years to raise money for the opportunity to travel to europe to broaden their field hockey and personal horizons. The timing is perfect as London is hosting the summer Olympics in 2012!

The team will:

Attend TWO Olympic hockey games! The Captains were able to • secure tickets right before they sold out and will enjoy watching and learning from field hockey being played at the highest level.Spend nine days traveling throughout Scotland and england • sightseeing in edinburgh, Stirling, Loch Lamond, Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, London and more.Gain international field hockey experience as they play three com-• petitive matches against local club teams.

Head Coach Carrie Moura feels it is important for the team to experience field hockey from an international perspective and plans for each student athlete to have the opportunity to play abroad once in her four-year career. The Captains traveled to the Dominican Republic in 2008 and played the Dominican National Team in a series of games.
