Through its strategic CORES program (Centralized Operations of Research Equipment and Supports), the Faculty of Medicine has developed a range of multi-user research facilities providing access to sophisticated equipment and services supported by trained experts. The CORES facilities welcome users from the Dalhousie community, other academic institutions, and external commercial groups. The Flow Cytometry Core Facility maintains and operates several state-of-the-art flow cytometers that support a broad range of capabilities including:

FLOW CYTOMETRY

• Complex multi-colour analytical flow cytometry

• Full-service cell sorting

• Image cytometry (ImageStream®)

We offer comprehensive cytometry training for independent use of several instruments as well as expert consultation to optimize panel design and sample preparation.

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (EM)

The EM Core Facility provides advanced research services for both Transmission and Scanning EM applications, including:

• Sample preparation • Sample thick/thin

Critical point drying and sputter coating

• Use of JEOL JEM 1230 TEM and/or Zeiss Sigma 300 FESEM

We offer consultation and training for instrument operation and accessible EM-related techniques.

CELLULAR & MOLECULAR DIGITAL IMAGING (CMDI)

The CMDI Core Facility houses an array of sophisticated, state-of-the-art imaging systems that support a range of techniques including:

• Widefield fluorescent microscopy

• Confocal laser scanning microscopy

• Super-resolution microscopy

• Laser microdissection• Small animal CT scanning

We provide training for independent use of imaging systems as well as several workstations with software for image processing and 3D image reconstruction.

The Zebrafish Core Facility provides researchers with state-of-the-art zebrafish resources and services including:

MARITIME BRAIN TISSUE BANK (MBTB)

The Maritime Brain Tissue Bank (MBTB) is a vital resource for researchers studying neurodegenerative diseases. Established in 1993, the MBTB contains brain tissues from healthy individuals and those affected by diseases, including:

• Alzheimer’s disease• Frontotemporal dementia• Lewy body disease

• Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

• Multiple sclerosis
