Answer: Hello Chinthaka , Good question! I think you are referencing to the technet sizing references.

The sizing documented on the TechNet site are recommendations. So the numbers are not

requirements. Those numbers are tested and proof to provide optimal Lync experience for maximum

server load. You could do less, but caution is required. The Lync 2013 infrastructure is less linear in users

versus performance then Lync 2010. When you deploy less users than the maximum numbers the server

can handle you should closely monitor the performance and user experience impact. For example this

can be done during a Pilot or proof of concept.

Question: Can we have Call Back or Call Waiting Features (functionality of PBX's) in Lync 2013?

Answer: There currently is no Call Back feature in Lync. However, remember that Lync is not an exact

PBX copy. It can replace PBXes! Lync leverages Presence, this means that you know when someone

comes available again, or you could choose an alternate method of contacting that is more fitting. Call

waiting features could maybe be solved with a response group and a call queue. If these options are not

fitting, you could always look for Lycn 2013 add ons. A broad range of applications can be found here:

Answer: Yes, as long as it is inheriting permission.

Question: Is it possible to integrate 3rd party ISDN Video conference MCU working with LYNC 2013?

Answer: Hi Pavlos, Thank you for your great question. It is possible. However you should consider user

experience and make clear choices on where a meeting is homed on. It could be confusing for users to

join a meeting room when you have both the Lync dialin conferencing service and the MCU dialin

conferencing service running on 2 different numbers. Also from user experience perspective the Lync

2013 Meeting scheduler in Outlook only sends the Microsoft Lync conferencing Dialin phone number.

You might deploy both and make the Lync solution work from general Users. Use a support team to

prepare and host and communicate clearly about the MCU meeting for example.

Question: That's a good question actually. Got me thinking.

clients use the WAC server. The uploaded powerpoint is rendered from 2 distribution points then.

15:32:44 PDT

Question: Based on the answer to that last question, can you run Lync on premise and Exchange Online

and expect full functionality as if you were running Exchange on prem?

Question: what is the role of replication ? I have problem with replication from edge server to frontend

server, I didn't find a solution to make to run, but even it's not running I don't have problem with

audio/video or share content between users when are connected to lync from external network

Answer: Replication is required to publish Topology and Policy changes. For the Edge the External access

Policy controls what you can and cannot do. Replication between the Front end server and the Edge

uses Port 4443. If you need additional help you should refer to Microsoft Support or Partner to fix it.

Hope this helps

16:10:29 PDT

Question: Aaron mentionned a 3rd party application to prevent DDOS on Edge Servers, not sure if it was

specifically that

Answer: Please note that next tot he security filter, A Director role is also important in protecting

against DDOS.

16:15:28 PDT

Question: Edge Server must to be diferent between Internal and external network??????

Answer: The internal Interface should be in a different network than the External interface. The Internal

interface of the edge should not be in the internal Network.

16:17:05 PDT

Question: I thought i heard that TMG was being deprecated, and that people should start using UAG

instead which will keep being developped. Is UAG able to work with Lync or is only TMG able to?

Answer: UAG is not the best solution. F5, Kemp are HLB partners that implemented Reverse proxy

solutions to replace TMG. AAR is a cheaper solution and provides Microsoft Server 2008R2 based

reverse proxying.

16:20:42 PDT

Question: thanks... is possible explain why??

Question: Can I use private IPs on External NIC of Edge Server (2 or more) if I have LB with Public VIPs?

Answer: DNS loadbalancing can be combined with NAT and private network interfaces. If you deploy

Hardware loadbalancing you can't use private interfaces on the edges. You are required to use External

IP addresses.

16:29:27 PDT

Question: Will the developed version for Lync 2013 Lync Security Edge filter include reverse proxy_IIS-

ARR capability?

Answer: Hi Shawn Harry, Good question. I'm not sure. It would be interesting to provide a soft lock on

the web services as well as done on the TMG.

16:32:20 PDT

Question: Don't forget, .local names will no longer be allowed on 3rd party certs soon.

Answer: Hi Pat, Interesting subject. I have never got Public Certs accepted that way. What PKI do you

use?

16:34:31 PDT

Question: So with the coming of public cert providers not issuing internal or local domain names on the

certs after 2015, what happens with a SE which is on local domain i.e. lab.local?

Answer: You should make a separate certificate request for the external web services. This one will be

used on the TMG.

16:35:36 PDT

Question: Most 3rd party CAs will give them to you now. But that's changing. No private names

anymore. So, putting internal server.domain.local names on certs is not going to be allowed.

Answer: I'm not worried. Never used private names in public certs anyways. Thanks for the info!

16:37:31 PDT

Question: is there any global traffic management solution to load balance edge pools between multiple

physical sites for Lync 2013 as there was for Lync 2010 by F5 ?

Question: What is Brick model in Lync 2013? How LyncFront End service holds presence information?

How much time can the backend server be dowm? What IOPS are required from storage presepective

for Lync FE servers

Answer: Lync 2010, when in an enterprise model, more effort has been made to make the Front end self

sufficient. The front end does hold presence data for it's primary users and uses lazy writes to put the on

a second and third front end. If the front is down, conferences will start to fail very quickly, the client will

go into a failed state after 10 minutes. IO requirements on the front end are not documented outside

the disk requirements of a front end.

review or capturing sessions. Beyond the "always on" level.

11:44:26 PDT

Question: So you mean conference IDs are not stored on rtclocal but are stored on rtc database ?

configured for Always On CLS logging.

11:51:42 PDT

Question: Suppose in a FE pool there are 5 servers. 3 Servers are down-at a time? Will the pool be up or

commit suside?

Answer: It will go offline when the number of servers up goes below 50% of the total in the pool.

11:55:09 PDT

Question: What is synthenthic watcher node? Can i configure custom test cases?

Answer: More information on the Watchernode is found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-

us/library/jj204943.aspx

11:58:56 PDT

Question: What do you mean by lazy writes?

Answer: It was just a matter of time that Microsoft realised they need to loosen this FE<–>BE coupling

to get more out of Lync server. This is where the Brick Model architecture of Lync Server 2013 comes

into play. FE servers are now given the responsibility of keeping the presence information and other

changes within themselves. These changes are written back to the BE database , the process commonly

known as Lazy writes. This and the everything that follows is why hardware requirements for Lync 2013

FE servers spiked. http://unifiedme.co.uk/2013/04/lync-server-2013-front-end-architecture-process-

and-can-you-run-enterprise-edition-pool-with-one-two-front-end-servers/

Question: can I use any custom script instead of synthetic watcher node (no SCOM in the network at all)

to use cshealthconfiguration settings to run commands such as test-csasconference & mail the output

created by OutLoggerVariable ?

Answer: You can. But is less neat. You can create custom scripts for this and mail the output. but I like

SCOM and the Watcher node solution much better.

13:49:55 PDT

Question: DNS load balancing for mediation server works for outbound calls? but for inbound calls your

gateway must support DNS loadbalancing....

Answer: The Mediation server is load balanced for the clients. The clients support DNS lb. Inbound calls

indeed require dns lb support from the gateway or IP PBX side. Certified gateways do support this. Most

IP PBXes do not.

13:53:40 PDT

Question: Internal Inerface of edge server is DNS loadbalanced..External Interface of edge server is

hardware loadbalancer? Will this work

Answer: Replied Live

13:57:53 PDT

Question: do I have to set the default route to HLB & do I have to add static routes to internal network

on Edge servers ?

Answer: Replied Live

13:57:56 PDT

Question: Is director role really required in Lync 13 topology? Because FE Pool still can do redirect work

(HTTP 301 Redirect).. So why director load balancing????

Answer: The FE pool only does a 301 redirect when the user is A: not directly connected to the homed

server (pure coincidence with dns lb) or B when the user is not homed to the same pool. The 301

redirect gives both primary and backup pool information in the Contact field. The director does not carry

any performance sensitive role like audio video conferencing. Authentication requests from the internet

are done on the Director role and thus protecting the internal environment from DDOS attacks. The

Director role is a recommended role. Not required.

13:59:10 PDT

Question: on the multi-homed supporability you mentioned, Does that mean you cannot have FE's and

most any pool servers inside the network to use multiple NIC's/IP's on several different networks

segments?

Question: what happened to RTC database on SQL BackEnd in Lync 2013 ?

Answer: Hi Bhushan, nothing really. Only supports Mirroring now but that is not database specific but

more a Lync server support thing.

14:02:38 PDT

Question: How are static routes loadbalanced?(Set-csStaticRoute)

Answer: That is about the mediation server static route, not the hosts static route. Use netsh to do the

OS change for routing.

14:09:26 PDT

Question: how about integration with jabber ? is it supported ? what if a federated partner desides to

move from ocs/lync to jabber, will I still be able to federate with them ?

Answer: Good question Bhushan, Lync supports XMPP federation with Jabber. However this will mean

that the federation can only provide Chat and presence based communication. peer to peer audio and

video will not be possible with XMPP. Video and audio conferencing could work. But only hosted on the

OCS / Lync environment by using web clients (if the other party duninstalls the MS clients)

14:09:29 PDT

Question: is there any GTM (global traffic management) solution for Lync 2013 Edge pools ? i.e. HLB

load balancing across physically separate sites between 2 or more Edge Pools ?

Answer: There are - all supported by the third-party providers such as F5

14:09:34 PDT

Question: why the invoke-cspoolfailback or other invokecs* commands has to be done manually in site

residency? is there any mechanism to detect a pool has gone down built in to lync 2013 ? is there any

roadmap for this ?

Answer: To prevent ping-ponging of the Lync services, no. this is a manual operation and will stay that

way. You want a person making the decision to fail a pool over and back.

14:15:57 PDT

Question: Please answer this:- The Backup Service is active on one Front End Server in each pool right??

What happens if that FE server of that pool is gone down? How replication occours???

14:17:26 PDT

Question: can you please explain call administration control as well ?

Answer: Call Admission control will be covered in Lync 337 in two weeks.

14:21:21 PDT

Question: Is this backup service secure(any encryption while coping data from primary pool to

secondarp pool) What about the CMS? The pool CMS is also copied through this backup service? Do

Response Group services will bw available?

Answer: It is secure. All traffic of the backup service is encrypted. The response group service is not

backed up to the other pool for recovery. You have to solve this by making backups. you can use the

export-csrgsconfiguration cmdlet for this.

14:22:09 PDT

Question: Sorry, I wanted to write Why is for webservices a HLB required and can´t be done by DNS

Loadbalancing?

Answer: Web traffic is statefull. a transaction should be finished on the same server. This requires a
