Local Scholarships: How To Apply

1. Applications are on the Sanger High School Web site at:

http:sangerhigh.sanger.k12.ca.us

2. Under Departments select Guidance Department

3. Under Career Information select Scholarships.

4. Select Local Scholarships and the Local Scholarship Application.

5. Type your information on the first page of the application. Type in your essay on the second page. Leave the GPA section blank, the registrar will fill in. Proofread your application and print one copy.

6. Depending on how many scholarships you are applying for make enough

back-to-back copies of your application on a copy machine. There should be one copy for each scholarship. (Ex. If you are applying for 20 scholarships you will submit 20 separate applications) You should only apply for scholarships for which you are qualified. Make sure you sign your name.

7. Turn in your applications by Tuesday, February 28th before 4:00 p.m. to

the Guidance Office. No late applications will be accepted.

After You Apply

1. A list of scholarship recipients will be posted in your American Government and Economics beginning the first week of May. Check the list each day, as names will be added weekly

2. If your are selected as a recipient you must attend Scholarship Night with your

parents on Wednesday, May 24th at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR

3. After you received your scholarship please write a thank you note to the scholarship committee. Names and address are available with Mrs. Gonzalez in the Guidance Office.

SHS LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS 2016-2017

Apply online at: http://sangerhigh.sanger.k12.ca.us/Departments/Guidance/scholarships/ 1. ALDO PISTACCHIO MEMORIAL (ITALIAN CATHOLIC FEDERATION): Student must have a 3.5 GPA or above. Should be a member of St. Mary’s Church or St. Katherine’s Church. Please provide a paragraph about your involvement and activities in St. Mary’s or St. Katherine’s Church. 2. ALEXANDER & DOROTHY MORROW SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate good moral character & leadership skills. Must state parent income on application. 3. AMANDA MONTELONGO FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA. Community involvement history. Planning to enroll as a full-time student in the fall directly after high school. Individual determination to succeed/future career goals and plans on how to achieve them. Demonstrated need for financial assistance. 4. APACHE AQUATICS BOOSTERS Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must have been in Aquatics at Sanger for 4 years. Parents must be active Booster member for 3 years. Third year must be current year. 5. APACHE FOOTBALL BOOSTER Student must have a 2.5 GPA and must have participated in Varsity Football for 2 years. 6. B&B CONSTRUCTION SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP Students pursuing a career in construction, construction management, engineering or related field. For low income students. 7. BECA EN MEMORIA DE ISAIAS MATA GPA between 2.5-3.0, first generation college student, Sanger Native, must have attended Sanger Schools in the last 4 years. Essay must include hardships encountered, and how higher education is needed to succeed. 9. BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH Minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference given to students interested in a medical or vocational field. 10. BOBBY ALCORN MEMORIAL Minimum 2.0 GPA. Students in aquatics who are planning to attend a two-year or a four-year college. Preference will be given to students in diving. 11. BREATHS FOR EVAN Evan Diaz was only a few old months old when he passed away from Muscular Spinal Atrophy. His family started a foundation that gives a scholarship called “Breaths for Evan” to bring awareness to the disease. 3.0 GPA or above, planning to major in the medical field. A 1-page essay on “What is spinal muscular atrophy?” must be submitted with application. 12. BRYAN SALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Passion for cars, repairing, modifying, or restoring vehicles. Please specify in essay. Involved in the Ag program. 13. CALIFORNIA SCHOOL EMPLOYEES #153 Parent must work as classified staff (Ex. Clerical, Bus Driver, Cafeteria, Custodial etc.) at Sanger Unified School District. 14. CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS Catholic students who are members of St. Mary’s Sanger or St. Katherine’s Del Rey. Must demonstrate record of community service to the church and the Sanger/Del Rey Community.

15. CENTERVILLE PTA Minimum 3.0 GPA. Please include a 1 page essay and make sure that the essay is at least one full page, with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Student must have attended Centerville for 5 years and parent must have been a PTA member during those 5 years. Must plan to enroll in college for fall semester. Please list years attended at Centerville. 16. CHARLES A. LEHMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Students with school involvement and community involvement. For students attending a two year or four year college. Demonstrate financial need. Careers in teaching, public service. Please attach one letter of recommendation and transcript. 17.CHARLES V. DELAP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Students planning to attend Reedley College. Careers in auto technology, diesel technology or aviation. 18. DARIO BUSTAMANTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Open to all students who played Sanger High football. 19. DEBRA CUCUK LOMBARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Open to students planning to attend a UC or USC. Preference given to UCLA or USC. 20. DEFYING THE ODDS GPA of 3.0-3.5. Hispanic male of female who will be first generation college student. Please include in essay any work experience or volunteer community service activities. Student must show proof of enrollment at 2 or 4 year university to receive scholarship. 21. DEL REY PTA Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must have attended Del Rey School a minimum of 2 years. 22. FAIRMONT SCHOOL BOOSTERS Attended Fairmont School 3 or more years, two of them in the 7th & 8th grades, minimum 3.0 GPA. Consideration will be given to students with special circumstances. List years attended at Fairmont. 23. FRANK LIVINGSTON MEMORIAL ROTARY LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP Must have a 2.5 GPA or above; evidence of community activities, leadership ability, list school activities and offices held. Plan on enrolling in 2 year or 4 year college or university. (Separate application available on SHS web site for this Rotary Scholarship). 24. FRANK LIVINGSTON MEMORIAL ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP Must have a 3.0 GPA or above, community involvement, list years involved in school activities on application, Must plan on enrolling directly in a 4 year college or university. (Separate application available on SHS web site for this Rotary Scholarship). 25. GARRY PACKING INC. SCHOLARSHIP Open to students with a 3.75 GPA or above. Involved in a Varsity Sport. Planning to attend a 4 year college or university. 26. GAYLE D. DERVISHIAN MEMORIAL Must have attended Lone Star School, minimum 3.0 GPA, excel in English, and plans to attend a 2 or 4 year college. 27. GERALD STEARNS/DENNIS MAGNONE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Open to all students with a 2.5 GPA or above; must be majoring in the field of Industrial Arts (ex: Construction /Drafting/Engineering) 28. GILBERT GONZALEZ MEMORIAL Open to any student planning to major in Art.

29. HEALTH CARE SCHOLARSHIP Open to students seeking a career in Health Care, primary focus on Nursing. Must show proof of college registration prior to receive scholarship. 30. HISTORY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Open to seniors who have participated in History Day. Must discuss experience and achievement with History Day in essay. 31. HOPE SANGER SCHOLARSHIP Student must have a 3.0 or above GPA. Student must have been a HOPE Youth Club member and participated in HOPE Sanger events. Please list events in scholarship essay. 32. INDEPENDENT GROCERS OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA Open to all students with a 2.0 GPA and above. 33. JACK AINGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Open to any female athlete who has earned at least 4 varsity letters at SHS and must have at least a 3.0 GPA. 34. JACKSON PTO Attended Jackson School for 4 years (list years attended), minimum 3.0 GPA. Must attend college in the fall. 35. J.A.C.L.-PEGGY SASASHIMA LIGGETT MEMORIAL Student, parent, or grandparent must be a member of any J.A.C.L. chapter or be of Japanese decent. Minimum 3.0 GPA. 36. JANET M. MERZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Seniors majoring in early childhood education (Pre-School) or interested in being a kindergarten teacher. 37. JEFFERSON PTO Must have attended Jefferson School and parents must be active PTO members. 38. JOHN WASH PTA Minimum 3.5 GPA. Must have attended John Wash at least 4 years. One of the 4 years attended must be in 6th grade. 39. JULIA MEJORADO SCHOLARSHIP 2.5-2.9 GPA, Latina Female, Low income. Please include in your essay, parent’s background and influence on post secondary plans and aspirations for college. 40. J.W. SIMPSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Males with a minimum 2.0 GPA, planning to attend a Community College or Vocational School. 41. KURT & KARL COLWELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 2.5 GPA. Student must show proof of enrollment at a community college or vocational school in the fall. Essay must include the issue of organ donation and experience with it, if any. 42. LA BECA DE ZEFERINO Y JUANITA LEAL (THE ZEFERINO AND JUANITA LEAL SCHOLARSHIP)✚

Hispanic student with minimum 3.0 GPA, Submit current transcript, Two letters of recommendation, Resume, Interview with student may be requested, 1-page essay on: “How Farm Labor Has Positively Impacted My Life” must be submitted with application, Must provide proof of parent and/or self recent farm labor income that shows place of employment (check stub or W-2), student must show proof of actual enrollment at 2- or 4-year college to receive scholarship money. Examples of proof of enrollment include: schedule of courses or receipt of fees paid. 43. LINCOLN PTO Student must have attended Lincoln School for at least 3 years and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Please include an essay that describes how Lincoln School has helped you succeed.

44. LONE STAR ELEMENTARY PTA Student must have attended Lone Star and must have 3.0 GPA or better. Parent must have been PTA member. 45. MADISON ELEMENTARY PTA Student must have attended Madison School for 3 years. Parent must be a current PTA member. Student must have a 3.0 GPA or above. Student must plan to attend college in the fall semester. 46. MID VALLEY DISPOSAL ECO APACHE SCHOLARSHIP Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Exemplify merit through school and community citizenship. Along with a general application and 2 letters of recommendation, applicants must complete an essay with the following prompt. PROMPT: You work for a garbage and recycling company. Create a plan to increase recycling and environmental efforts within the City of Sanger. Remember to account for recycling at businesses, multi-family complexes, schools, and residences. Include your plan for educating the community at different age levels; childhood through senior citizens. 3-5 pages. 47. MIGUEL AND PETRA PONCE MEMORIAL Student must be an education major with an emphasis in music or music background, 3.0 GPA or above. 48. MONICA MATH SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 2.0 GPA. For students who have improved the grades throughout their 4 years of High School. 49. NICHOLSON TRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP Student must be a Sanger High athlete, at least 2 years of Varsity Sports. Include all sports involved in essay. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must show proof of college registration to receive scholarship. 50. OFFICER JOHN D. HERRING, PSY.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Graduating Senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Must have completed a criminology class at SHS or be currently in a criminology class. Essay requirement: The motto of one local police department is ‘Safety, Service, and Trust’. What does this mean to you and your future goals in law enforcement? 51. QUAIL LAKE CHARTER SCHOOL PTO Minimum 3.0 GPA, Must have attended Quail Lake Charter a minimum of 4 years, two of the years must have been in 7th and 8th grade. List years attended. Include in essay how you have contributed to Quail Lake School the past 4 years. 52. RAYMOND F. ALANIZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA. Attending a 2 or 4 year college. Consideration given to students who demonstrate any or all of the following: Member of Catholic Church, interest in music and/or medicine. Must submit a 1 page essay discussing how your interests, talent and education will benefit others. 53. RONALD W. REAGAN PTO Minumum 3.0 GPA. Has attended Reagan Elementary School. Include resume listing volunteer work in school/community. Plan to attend college. 54. RUBEN MEJORADO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 2.5-2.9 GPA, Latino Male, Low income. Please include in your essay, parent’s background and influence on post secondary plans and aspirations for college. 55. RUBY HULLENDER MEMORIAL Minimum 2.8 GPA, plans to attend a two year college and have parents who did not have opportunity to attend college. 56. SANGER ACADEMY PTO Must have graduated from Sanger Academy Charter School or attended two full years. Parent or student must be current PTA or current PTSA member. Must list at least 2 community and 2 school activities. Minimum 3.0 GPA

57. SANGER AGRICULTURIST FOR EDUCATION Minimum 2.5 GPA. Must have taken Agriculture classes all 4 years of High School. Earned state FFA degree. Must be attending college. 58. SANGER COUNCIL PTA Student must have a 3.0 GPA or above; show intentions of further post high school education. Parent or student must be a current member of the SHS “PTSA”. 59. SANGER ENVIRONMENTAL FUND Applicants must provide documentation of any science classes taken by providing a Transcript. Letter of recommendation from a science teacher. Letter by applicant about Sanger area and environmental issues. Science based career objectives and interests. Description of Community involvement, volunteer experience, and participation in recycling, and community clean-up events, or volunteering in the science or environmental events. 60. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL ARMENIAN CLUB Must have been an Active club member for 2 years, including senior year. 61. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL ART CLUB Student must have been an Active member for 2-3 years; including senior year and must have a 2.5 GPA minimum. Higher consideration is given to applicants who have been enrolled in the Visual Arts program. 62. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS Cumulative GPA should be above 3.0. Provide high school transcript. At least 3 yrs. in band/color guard/ winter percussion and/ or drum and bugle corps during high school with one of those years being senior year. 2 letters of recommendation from non family members and should not be from any SHS faculty member. Letters can be from volunteer organizations, employers, church etc.. A 500 word essay explaining the influence that music and/or being in band or other performance groups has had in their life. Proof of enrollment in music studies by the 1st or 2nd semester of college and/or proof of participation in a drum and bugle corps or other groups such as dance/color guard in college. 63.SANGER HIGH SCHOOL CHEER BOOSTERS Student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Should be an active member of cheer squad for at least 2 years. Plan on attending a 2 year or 4 year college. Please list goals and expectations for yourself.

64. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1969 Minimum 2.0 GPA, must show proof of enrollment to any 2 year college. 65. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1972 SCHOLARSHIP Student must have a 2.0 grade point average, must plan on attending a community college, trade college or four-year college. Child or grandchild of member of Class of 1972 may have preference. 66. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL CSF SCHOLARSHIP Student must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and already confirmed lifetime status. 67. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL ELD CLUB Must be an active ELD club member. 68. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES Student must have at least a 3.0 GPA, must be an active paid member by Dec. 2016. Student must show proof of post high school education by spring semester of following school year. 69. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL HI-Y Student must be an active club member in good standing. Must Show Proof of enrollment and submit a thank you letter prior to receiving the scholarship.

70. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL HOME ECONOMICS (FHA-HERO) Must have 2 years of enrollment in Home Economics Career Technical Department. Be an active paid member of FHA-HERO, and have a 3.0 GPA. Must show proof of enrollment to receive scholarship. 71. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL PTSA Student must have a 3.0 GPA or above. Must be a member of SHS PTSA by February 1st of the graduating school year; show intentions of further post high school education. 72. SANGER ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 2.5 GPA; demonstrate school & community involvement; must enroll only at a community college. 73. SANGER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT MIGRANT EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP Must be a qualified migrant student, minimum 2.0 GPA. Student plans to attend college, vocational or trade school. 74. SANGER UNIFIED TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION Must have a 3.0 GPA or above and at least one parent who is a teacher and a member of the Sanger Unified Teachers Association. 75. SANGER WOMAN’S CLUB Scholarship with a 3.5 GPA or above 76. SANGER YOUTH BASEBALL CAL RIPKEN Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and played youth and high school baseball. Must include their experience with playing baseball in essay. 77. SANTIAGO S. CHAPA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA; parents must be farmworkers; financial need; and planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college. 78. SETH DUNN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Student must be involved in school activities and community service. Minimum 2.5 GPA 79. SHARON L.PITTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Open to students with a stated career goal in teaching whose academic record, accomplishments and community involvement reflect their commitment to the profession. Special preference will be given to alumni of Madison Elementary. 80. SJVARS COMMUNICATION & TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP Recipient must have an interest in amateur radio, communications, or technology. Minimum 2.5 GPA; and plan to purse a career in a technical field and planning to attend college or a training center. 81. STACEY LARSEN FEIGEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Must have an overall 3.0 or better GPA. Must have played any sport for a minimum of 2 years at the varsity level. Must have performed some form of community service, for example, in the Sanger Community, such as community service projects, non-profits, Girl Scouts or Boy scouts, etc. 82. THE DEAN E. PHILPOTT SCHOLARSHIP Open to graduating Sanger High School seniors pursuing a technical or vocational careers such as, but not limited to, project management, cosmetology, hotel management, automotive repair, HVAC, and electrical. Qualified applicants will have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. 83. TRAVIS JAMES FOSTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Must have played football for all four years, have at least a 2.25 GPA and planning to attend a four college. A 2-page essay on “How football has prepared me for the game of life” must be submitted with application.

84. TRUCHA CAMP SCHOLARSHIP Former Trucha Camp Student (Participated in Sanger Unified Elementary PE program.) One Letter of recommendation. 1 Current Transcript “What does G.R.T (Good Right & True) mean to You” (1-2 page Essay) 85.VAZNAIAN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND Student must at least a 2.5 GPA. Preference given to students of Armenian decent, but not required. Student plans to major in Social Work or plans to work with children. 86. VULCAN MATERIAL COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP Student must have at least a 2.8 GPA with an interest in construction, engineering or business field. 87. WASHINGTON ACADEMIC MIDDLE SCHOOL PTA Student must have a 3.0 GPA or above; parent must be a PTSA member; must have attended WAMS. 88. WILSON PTA Must have a 3.0 GPA or above. Must have attended Wilson School K-5th grade. Include volunteer work in school & community activities.

10 Tips for Writing Effective Scholarship Essays

1. Read the instructions and make sure you understand them before you start writing.

2. Think about what you are going to write and organize your thoughts before you start writing.

3. Begin the writing process by writing an outline.

4. Make sure your outline touches on every aspect required per the instructions.

5. Write your essay by elaborating on each of the points in your outline.

6. Use clear, concise and simple language throughout the essay.

7. State your accomplishments without coming across as if you are bragging.

8. Make sure your grammar and spelling are impeccable.

9. Read the question again and then read your essay to be certain that the essay addresses every point.

10. Have someone with strong writing and editing skills proofread the essay before you submit it.
