Local Scholarships: How To Apply

1. Applications are on the Sanger High School Web site at:

http:sangerhigh.sanger.k12.ca.us

2. Under Departments select Guidance Department

3. Under Career Information select Scholarships.

4. Select Local Scholarships and the Local Scholarship Application.

5. Type your information on the first page of the application. Type in your essay on the second page. Leave the GPA section blank, the registrar will fill in. Proofread your application and print one copy.

6. Depending on how many scholarships you are applying for make enough

back-to-back copies of your application on a copy machine. There should be one copy for each scholarship. (Ex. If you are applying for 20 scholarships you will submit 20 separate applications) You should only apply for scholarships for which you are qualified. Make sure you sign your name.

7. Turn in your applications by Tuesday, February 28th before 4:00 p.m. to

the Guidance Office. No late applications will be accepted.

After You Apply

1. A list of scholarship recipients will be posted in your American Government and Economics beginning the first week of May. Check the list each day, as names will be added weekly

2. If your are selected as a recipient you must attend Scholarship Night with your

parents on Wednesday, May 24th at 6:00 p.m. in the MPR

3. After you received your scholarship please write a thank you note to the scholarship committee. Names and address are available with Mrs. Gonzalez in the Guidance Office.

Should be a member of St. Mary’s Church or St. Katherine’s Church. Please provide a paragraph about your involvement and activities in St. Mary’s or St. Katherine’s Church. 2. ALEXANDER & DOROTHY MORROW SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate good moral character & leadership skills. Must state parent income on application. 3. AMANDA MONTELONGO FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA. Community involvement history. Planning to enroll as a full-time student in the fall directly after high school. Individual determination to succeed/future career goals and plans on how to achieve them. Demonstrated need for financial assistance. 4. APACHE AQUATICS BOOSTERS Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must have been in Aquatics at Sanger for 4 years. Parents must be active Booster member for 3 years. Third year must be current year. 5. APACHE FOOTBALL BOOSTER Student must have a 2.5 GPA and must have participated in Varsity Football for 2 years. 6. B&B CONSTRUCTION SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP Students pursuing a career in construction, construction management, engineering or related field. For low income students. 7. BECA EN MEMORIA DE ISAIAS MATA GPA between 2.5-3.0, first generation college student, Sanger Native, must have attended Sanger Schools in the last 4 years. Essay must include hardships encountered, and how higher education is needed to succeed. 9. BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH Minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference given to students interested in a medical or vocational field. 10. BOBBY ALCORN MEMORIAL Minimum 2.0 GPA. Students in aquatics who are planning to attend a two-year or a four-year college. Preference will be given to students in diving. 11. BREATHS FOR EVAN Evan Diaz was only a few old months old when he passed away from Muscular Spinal Atrophy. His family started a foundation that gives a scholarship called “Breaths for Evan” to bring awareness to the disease. 3.0 GPA or above, planning to major in the medical field. A 1-page essay on “What is spinal muscular atrophy?” must be submitted with application. 12. BRYAN SALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Passion for cars, repairing, modifying, or restoring vehicles. Please specify in essay. Involved in the Ag program. 13. CALIFORNIA SCHOOL EMPLOYEES #153 Parent must work as classified staff (Ex. Clerical, Bus Driver, Cafeteria, Custodial etc.) at Sanger Unified School District. 14. Exemplify merit through school and community citizenship. Along with a general application and 2 letters of recommendation, applicants must complete an essay with the following prompt. PROMPT: You work for a garbage and recycling company. Create a plan to increase recycling and environmental efforts within the City of Sanger. Remember to account for recycling at businesses, multi-family complexes, schools, and residences. Include your plan for educating the community at different age levels; childhood through senior citizens. 3-5 pages. 47. MIGUEL AND PETRA PONCE MEMORIAL Student must be an education major with an emphasis in music or music background, 3.0 GPA or above. 48. MONICA MATH SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 2.0 GPA. For students who have improved the grades throughout their 4 years of High School. 49. NICHOLSON TRIBUTE SCHOLARSHIP Student must be a Sanger High athlete, at least 2 years of Varsity Sports. Include all sports involved in essay. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Must show proof of college registration to receive scholarship. 50. OFFICER JOHN D. HERRING, PSY.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Graduating Senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Must have completed a criminology class at SHS or be currently in a criminology class. Essay requirement: The motto of one local police department is ‘Safety, Service, and Trust’. What does this mean to you and your future goals in law enforcement? 51. QUAIL LAKE CHARTER SCHOOL PTO Minimum 3.0 GPA, Must have attended Quail Lake Charter a minimum of 4 years, two of the years must have been in 7th and 8th grade. List years attended. Include in essay how you have contributed to Quail Lake School the past 4 years. 52. RAYMOND F. ALANIZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA. Attending a 2 or 4 year college. Consideration given to students who demonstrate any or all of the following: Member of Catholic Church, interest in music and/or medicine. SANGER COUNCIL PTA Student must have a 3.0 GPA or above; show intentions of further post high school education. Parent or student must be a current member of the SHS “PTSA”. 59. SANGER ENVIRONMENTAL FUND Applicants must provide documentation of any science classes taken by providing a Transcript. Letter of recommendation from a science teacher. Letter by applicant about Sanger area and environmental issues. Science based career objectives and interests. Description of Community involvement, volunteer experience, and participation in recycling, and community clean-up events, or volunteering in the science or environmental events. 60. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL ARMENIAN CLUB Must have been an Active club member for 2 years, including senior year. 61. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL ART CLUB Student must have been an Active member for 2-3 years; including senior year and must have a 2.5 GPA minimum. Higher consideration is given to applicants who have been enrolled in the Visual Arts program. 62. SANGER HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS Cumulative GPA should be above 3.0. Provide high school transcript. At least 3 yrs. in band/color guard/ winter percussion and/ or drum and bugle corps during high school with one of those years being senior year. 2 letters of recommendation from non family members and should not be from any SHS faculty member. Letters can be from volunteer organizations, employers, church etc.. A 500 word essay explaining the influence that music and/or being in band or other performance groups has had in their life. Proof of enrollment in music studies by the 1st or 2nd semester of college and/or proof of participation in a drum and bugle corps or other groups such as dance/color guard in college. 63.SANGER HIGH SCHOOL CHEER BOOSTERS Student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. SANGER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT MIGRANT EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP Must be a qualified migrant student, minimum 2.0 GPA. Student plans to attend college, vocational or trade school. 74. SANGER UNIFIED TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION Must have a 3.0 GPA or above and at least one parent who is a teacher and a member of the Sanger Unified Teachers Association. 75. SANGER WOMAN’S CLUB Scholarship with a 3.5 GPA or above 76. SANGER YOUTH BASEBALL CAL RIPKEN Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and played youth and high school baseball. Must include their experience with playing baseball in essay. 77. SANTIAGO S. CHAPA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Minimum 3.0 GPA; parents must be farmworkers; financial need; and planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college. 78. SETH DUNN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Student must be involved in school activities and community service. Minimum 2.5 GPA 79. SHARON L.PITTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Open to students with a stated career goal in teaching whose academic record, accomplishments and community involvement reflect their commitment to the profession. Special preference will be given to alumni of Madison Elementary. 80. SJVARS COMMUNICATION & TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP Recipient must have an interest in amateur radio, communications, or technology. Minimum 2.5 GPA; and plan to purse a career in a technical field and planning to attend college or a training center. 81. STACEY LARSEN FEIGEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Must have an overall 3.0 or better GPA. Must have played any sport for a minimum of 2 years at the varsity level. Must have performed some form of community service, for example, in the Sanger Community, such as community service projects, non-profits, Girl Scouts or Boy scouts, etc. 82. THE DEAN E. PHILPOTT SCHOLARSHIP Open to graduating Sanger High School seniors pursuing a technical or vocational careers such as, but not limited to, project management, cosmetology, hotel management, automotive repair, HVAC, and electrical. Qualified applicants will have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. 83. TRAVIS JAMES FOSTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Must have played football for all four years, have at least a 2.25 GPA and planning to attend a four college. A 2-page essay on “How football has prepared me for the game of life” must be submitted with application.

Preference given to students of Armenian decent, but not required. Student plans to major in Social Work or plans to work with children. 86. VULCAN MATERIAL COMPANY SCHOLARSHIP Student must have at least a 2.8 GPA with an interest in construction, engineering or business field. 87. WASHINGTON ACADEMIC MIDDLE SCHOOL PTA Student must have a 3.0 GPA or above; parent must be a PTSA member; must have attended WAMS. 88. WILSON PTA Must have a 3.0 GPA or above. Must have attended Wilson School K-5th grade. Include volunteer work in school & community activities.

10 Tips for Writing Effective Scholarship Essays

1. Read the instructions and make sure you understand them before you start writing.

2. Think about what you are going to write and organize your thoughts before you start writing.

3. Begin the writing process by writing an outline.

4. Make sure your outline touches on every aspect required per the instructions.

5. Write your essay by elaborating on each of the points in your outline.

6. Use clear, concise and simple language throughout the essay.

7. State your accomplishments without coming across as if you are bragging.

8. Make sure your grammar and spelling are impeccable.

9. Read the question again and then read your essay to be certain that the essay addresses every point.

10. Have someone with strong writing and editing skills proofread the essay before you submit it.
