Page 3: Core competencies

FedEx is long known for its outstanding delivery and goods tracking mechanisms. FedEx delivery agents carry palmtops to update goods delivery status back to their main frames from the field. It enables FedEx customers to track their good from source to destination and on time delivery.

the company pioneered the first automated customer service centre.

To provide real-time package tracking for each shipment, FedEx uses one of the world's largest computer and telecommunications networks. The company's couriers operate SuperTracker® hand-held computers, to record the transit of shipments through the FedEx integrated network.

COSMOS (Customer Operations Service Master On-line System) is a computerized package tracking system that monitors every phase of the delivery cycle at Federal Express. FedEx employees constantly input information into COSMOS by several means.

Starbucks

Starbucks core competencies are its unwavering focus on quality, outstanding customer service, continuous product advancement, care for its employees, and its drive to be "everywhere."  From the very beginning Schultz focused on providing freshly roasted and poured coffee of such a high quality that once tasted customers would be unwilling to drink anything of lesser quality. Schultz was struck when he spoke with his first Barista at the original Seattle store that the individual behind the counter was very well versed in coffee making and ground the coffee beans right in front of him.  Since then the company has focused on maintaining this core competence in all of its stores, nationally and internationally.

Starbucks' unwavering support to its employees was clearly displayed when it was the first company to offer stock options to part-time employees.  The company also strongly believes in educating its workforce and provides at least 24 hours of training for each new employee covering such areas as the history of coffee, customer service, retail skills, and "Brewing the Perfect Cup." Starbucks has one of the lowest employee turnover rates in the industry with 60% turnover for Starbucks and 140% for the industry average.

Volkswagen AG

TDI Diesel Technology

The high-performance diesel technology TDI is one of Volkswagen’s core competencies. BlueTDI is a new concept that makes this technology even cleaner: exhaust aftertreatment reduces nitrogen oxides produced by up to 90 percent, making the Passat BlueTDI the most environmentally-friendly diesel in its class

Recycling

Recycling is indispensable component for enhancing the sustainability of our products. This is not only restricted to the final recycling of vehicles at the end of their lives but also applies both during the development phase of a new car, with the associated selection of materials and their production processes, as well as to aspects in the usage phase such as the treatment and disposal of fluids, lubricants and parts subject to wear. Volkswagen works intensively on the continuous development and refinement of recycling methods, processes and technologies, with the aim of protecting the environment and saving natural resources

EcoFuel – Technology of the futureVolkswagen offers cars that run on natural gas under the “EcoFuel” label. Compared with a conventional petrol engine, the EcoFuel power plant running in natural gas mode produces around 80 percent less carbon monoxide and around 80 percent less nitrous oxides. CO2 emissions are reduced by 23 percent and are below 129 g/km. EcoFuel technology therefore guarantees access to all environmental zones. Natural gas is currently the cheapest fuel on the market, because the gas price will enjoy tax relief until 2018. There are no limits to the use of bio-natural gas. With EcoFuel technology Volkswagen is responding to the significant increase in demand for eco-friendly and economical cars, and it is also available as a DSG version.

Blue motion Technology

With the product label "BlueMotion" Volkswagen has launched a new sustainability initiative. "BlueMotion" identifies vehicles with an overall focus in economy in their design. They combine consumption reducing technology with an equally efficient and dynamic powertrain. "BlueMotion" is thus a response to rising fuel prices and increasing demands of the environmental properties and consumption of vehicles.
