It is important to note that these are not actually the student’s schedule; student schedules will become available shortly before the clerkship starts. Any absences from a clerkship must be entered into the CCOM Time-Off System and shared with their Clerkship Director(s) and Clerkship Coordinator ahead of time. CLERKSHIP EXAMS

TIME-OFF REQUESTS: To maximize the time spent on your teams and to ensure quality evaluations, we ask that students only take one day-off per week. Students are only allowed to take two days off between the Monday of Week One and the Friday of Week Three and two days off

between the Monday of Week Four and the Wednesday of Week Six. Sunday is the official day-off for the clerkship to set a standard so that teams know when the medical student is off. In addition to the Sundays during the clerkship, all students get the third weekend off and the day before the exam to study.

NEUROLOGY • First day will be for orientation activities only, starting at 8am, and typically ending by 4:30pm • Each student’s schedule will vary. There will typically be 3-4 students per service at a time. Students spend 1 week on each of the following

services: o consults/general o stroke o child neurology o UIHC

• During the assigned stroke week, each student will be assigned 1 evening call date (5 pm-9 pm) • During the assigned consults/general week, each student will be assigned 1 evening call date (5 pm-9 pm) • Students on UIHC week are given a half-day of study time; this is contingent on the Neuro clinic schedule, so the day of the week will vary • Each day at 4pm students will break for a virtual teaching session (note that DSM students will join most days) • Final exam is at 9am on the last day; after the exam, students are finished with clerkship duties

OBSTETRICS/GYNECOLOGY • First day of the clerkship is orientation. • Education Day either the first Friday (week 1) or second Monday (week 2) of the combined OBGyn/Surgery Clerkship • Each student’s schedule will vary but students will spend time on the following services during the six-week rotation:

o One week of Gyn Onc o One week of Benign Gyn o Two weeks of Labor & Delivery. During this time, students can work the weekend prior to, during or after the rotation. A weekend is a

Saturday and Sunday. o Two weeks of specialty clinics

• Students will have the last Thursday of the clerkship off for a study day • The Obstetrics and Gynecology NBME exam is on the last day of the clerkship (Friday) • OSCE is the Friday of week eleven of the OBGyn/Surgery combined Clerkship.

TIME-OFF REQUESTS: time-off requests must be submitted a minimum of 1 week before the start date of the clerkship. ACCOMMODATIONS: Please submit any accommodation requests prior to the start of the clerkship.

AFTERNOON CLERKSHIP

EXAMS

Students come in and round one day of the middle weekend of their inpatient block (arranged with team). This is the only weekend obligation of the clerkship. Students have one long day each week of inpatient, 7:00 am – 10:00 pm. This takes the place of call.

• Because Pediatrics is primarily an outpatient clerkship (4 weeks outpatient, 2 weeks inpatient), we ask the following: o Limit requests for weekends to 1 weekend per student and submit the time off request at least 4 weeks before the clerkship begins. o Limit requests for weekdays to 2 weekdays per student and submit requests at least 4 weeks before the clerkship begins.

• Avoid time off requests during the first and last week of the clerkship as well as the week of a holiday. • Each student will be given a minimum of 2 half-days off during the Gen Peds/Newborn Nursery block as study days (the only exception is when a

holiday and orientation/exam are in the same 2 week block). The last Thursday afternoon of the clerkship is a study day for all students.

You will also round on 2 weekend days of your choice, and have other weekend days off. Short absences (max 3 days) will be made up with extra time On Call.

SURGERY

• Students receive 1, half-day off during weeks 1-5 for independent study time. That half-day is determined by your team, since different services have different schedules.

• Time-off must be requested at least three weeks in advance of beginning of the clerkship. • There are educational sessions that are randomly scheduled throughout the block and cannot be made up if missed: for this reason, late

afternoon appointments are recommended. • Weekend duties on Surgery include a trauma call.

o Students will be assigned one 12-hour trauma call, on either a Saturday or Sunday from 0600-1800. • Avoid time off requests during the first and last week of the clerkship as well as the week of a holiday. • Avoid time off requests during the OSCE or other scheduled education sessions. • The last Thursday of the clerkship is a study day for all students.

• Orientation begins at 8:00 am via Zoom. At 9:00 am is a tour of the department. After the tour is complete students will go to their assigned clinic

for the remainder of the day.

• A typical day will include a learning session from 7:30-8:30 am or 8:00-9:00 am, followed by clinic/OR experience, until the completion of the clinic day, generally around 5-6 pm.

• There will be 6 learning sessions during the rotation. All learning sessions will be over Zoom.

• Students will have 2 clinic days and 1 OR day each week, with other times dedicated to an independent study curriculum.

• Students are required to attend the last day of the clerkship until 12:00 pm.

• The test will be on the last day of the clerkship at 2:00 pm.

• A typical day will include starting day with morning ward rounds at 6-6:30am, followed by clinical/OR experience, until the completion of the clinic day, generally around 5-6 pm.

• Students are required to attend the last day of the 2-week clerkship until 12:00 pm.

• The test will be on the last day of the clerkship at 1:00pm (hybrid).

If the rotation has two University holiday dates, the Virtual/Academic day will not be provided. *Urology’s absence policy follows the Carver College of Medicine’s policy and allow for a maximum of 1 day (10 hours) approved absence after which time needs to be made up. No weekends are required.
