The BC Coroners Service has called an inquest into the 2010 arson death of a Coquitlam mother. The inquest, which is scheduled for Nov. 16 to 19 in Burnaby, will investigate the death of Colette Marie Salemink. Salemink, 59, died follow- ing a fire at her Coquitlam home in April 2010. Her son Blake Salemink, 23, was later arrested and charged with manslaughter and arson in relation to his mother’s death. He was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder as a teen and had undergone treat- ment at Royal Columbian and then Riverview hospitals. In May, Salemink was found not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder at trial. During the inquest, the pre- siding coroner and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses to determine facts surround- ing the death. Though the jury can’t make any findings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportunity to make recom- mendations aimed at prevent- ing deaths under similar cir- cumstances in the future. According to officials with the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), Gregory Owen Schleen, 49, was picked up by police without incident in Vancouver and returned to the hospital on Aug. 3. The PHSA did not provide any more details related to Schleen’s disappearance or return. He went missing from the hospital while on a day pass back on May 24. Schleen was supposed to be at the Coast Cottages on the Riverview Hospital site later that morning but never showed up. The PHSA also said it is still working to find the other missing patient, David Fomradas. “Forensic Psychiatric Services (FPS) and the RCMP are working closely together in an effort to locate Mr. Fomradas so that he can continue to receive appropriate treatment and supervision,” said a PHSA spokesperson in an e-mail to The NOW. Fomradas, 34, went missing a couple of days prior to Schleen, also while out on an unescorted day pass. The pair’s disappearance sparked two reviews of the hospital’s unescorted day-pass program and an outcry from politicians and residents in the com- munity. What first appeared to be a spec-tacular blaze at a Coquitlampaint store turned out to be

nothing more than roofing materialon fire.

Coquitlam firefighters were calledto the Dulux Paints store on BarnetHighway near Lansdowne Drivearound 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Flames could be seen shootingfrom the roof of the business complex, which also houses a spa and Curves.

“It was very spectacular comingdown the road,” said assistant firechief Scott MacKenzie, who figured hehad a five-alarm blaze on his hands.

But when crews arrived, they wereable to quickly knock down the fire.

It ended up just being roofingmaterials and tar on the roof of thecomplex, which somehow caught fire.

“It looked like a five [alarm] gone toa half [alarm],” MacKenzie said.

He noted there was no fire damageto any of the businesses or the build-ing, and only about $1,000 of materialwent up in smoke.

It was also fortunate no one washurt in the incident, as the buildingwas empty since it was after businesshours.

Fire investigators are not sure whatstarted the blaze.

Justin Gagnon had only been thepaint store’s manager for a week.

He got a call from a regional boss

alerting him the building was on fire.Though Gagnon was nervous at the

news, he was relieved by the eventualoutcome.

The fire department told him therewas no fire damage to the building

or store, just a bit of water damageinstead.

“Things are looking OK,” Gagnontold The NOW at the scene of the fire.

However, he wasn’t sure if he’d beable to open the store the next day.

The store manager said all of hisemployees had packed up for the daybefore the fire was called in.

Gagnon noted a roofer had beendoing work that day on the complexprior to the fire.

Catching a robber with a pen-chant for winter-weather wear isnow a major priority for CoquitlamMounties, after he allegedly struckagain last weekend.

Police were called to four robberiesat businesses in the Austin Avenueand Blue Mountain Street area overthe weekend, bringing the numberof cases to seven in the last couple ofweeks.

Investigators believe the same sus-pect is responsible for all of the thefts, based on his appearance.

The thief has been spotted wear-ing a hoodie, balaclava and gloves. In some cases, the hoodie might bewhite or grey, but police suggest thesuspect’s attire should stick out giventhe weather.

“It’s not exactly minus 10 out here,”RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said.

The thief has targeted a coffee shop, retail store and pharmacy. In one case,he may have brandished a gun.

Coquitlam RCMP put out a pressrelease last week to notify businessesin the area after the first three rob-

beries.Catching the crook has become a

high priority for the detachment.Chung noted officers with both the

plainclothes and robbery units arestaking out the area in hopes of catch-ing the suspect in the act.

“So far nobody’s been hurt yet, although we’d like to catch him assoon as possible,” he said.

Given the localized nature of therobberies, police suspect the thiefmight have just moved to the area andpicked up a new habit that requireshim to rob in order to get money.

With the suspect on the loose,Mounties are once again asking busi-ness owners to call 911 if they seesomeone with a similar descriptionenter their shop.

The suspect is described asCaucasian with brown hair, stand-ing six-feet tall, weighing 190 to 215pounds.

He’s approximately 20 to 24 yearsold.

During a sweep of the home, firefighterscame across the 59-year-old Colette Saleminkat the rear of the house and immediately beganCPR. She was brought to Royal ColumbianHospital, where she was later pronounceddead.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Teamtook over the case the next day, and stated atthe time that investigators were interested in

speaking with the young man, who reportedlysuffered from mental health problems and hadbeen missing after the fire.

At the time, investigators believed on themorning of the fire, Salemink crossed theborder into the United States and travelled toOregon, where he called a family member tolet that person know where he was located. After police met up with him south of the bor-der, Salemink decided to voluntarily return toCanada.

Fomradas is the manbehind a bizarre carjackingin 2009 involving Vancouveractress Carly Pope.

In both cases, the RCMPnoted the patients’ mentalhistory and warned the publicto not approach them, andinstead call police.

In the case of Schleen, itwasn’t the first time he’d gonemissing from the hospital, ashe also did so in 2009.

Officials with the hospitalinsisted the two men are not a

danger to the public and suchincidents are rare.

Though PHSA officials didnot indicate where Schleenhad been while on the lam,

he was noted to have friendsand family along the SunshineCoast and on VancouverIsland.

At the time of the dis-appearances, Coquitlam MayorRichard Stewart requesteda meeting between the cityand hospital officials, whilethe Kwikwetlem First Nationexpressed its own concerns.

The band said it has been infear of such events since thehospital re-opened in 1997,noting several families livebeside the hospital. The bandalso questioned why it wasn’ttold of Fomradas’ disappear-ance until two days later.

Man robbed, stabbedFor the third weekend in a month, an alter-

cation in the Austin Heights area has landedsomeone in hospital.

On Saturday morning, a man was robbedand stabbed while walking through the area ofAustin Avenue and Blue Mountain.

Coquitlam Mounties said the man, in hisearly 20s, was walking home after 2 a.m. whena suspect appeared from the darkness, demand-ing valuables from the victim.

The man fought back and got away to anearby 7-Eleven store.

“He refused to be robbed andthey got into a scuffle,” said RCMPCpl. Jamie Chung.

The victim then realized he hadbeen stabbed several times duringthe fight and eventually checkedhimself into a hospital.

Police note the man suffered superficialwounds.

Coquitlam RCMP are now looking for thesuspect, who may be homeless.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian manin his 40s with a dark complexion, scruffy greyhair and beard.

He was wearing a stained baseball hat.A week earlier, three men were stabbed fol-

lowing an altercation with a larger group inthe 400 block of Westview Street.

The men, all in their early 20s, receivedminor injuries from the fight.

Police at the time were not sure whatsparked the altercation.

A couple of weeks before that, a man wasbeaten a few blocks away on Austin Street.

In the July 27 incident, a man was sent tohospital suffering from a serious head woundafter an altercation at a bus stop.

Police at the time didn’t have a suspect or amotive for the attack.

Despite the recent spate of incidents, police

insist the neighbourhood is still safe.“That could happen anywhere where there

is lots of foot traffic and a lot of people walkingaround at night,” Chung said in regard to thelatest incident.

He said finding the suspect is important, butadded the community needs to find better waysto deal with homelessness in the city, suggest-ing the proposed homeless shelter for GordonAvenue will be part of the solution.

Anyone with information related to theincident on Saturday is asked tocall the local detachment at 604-945-1550 and quote file number2012-22933.

Police ask for help inpossible hit-and-run

Coquitlam Mounties are looking for thepublic’s help in solving an unusual possiblehit-and-run from earlier this month.

Police said the incident took place on Aug.10, but wasn’t reported until a week later onAug. 17.

According to a statement given to police, thevictim said all he could remember is someonehelping him into a cab near North Road andSmith Avenue.

He then woke up at his Maillardville homewith injuries similar to being hit by a vehicle. When he went to the hospital for a checkupseveral days later, it was discovered that he hadsuffered a concussion, broken ribs and numer-ous bruises and road rash.

“This is an unusual complaint and we wouldlike public assistance to solve it,” said RCMPCpl. Jamie Chung in a statement.

The bolt-from-the-blue announcement bynewspaper mogul David Black that he wantsto build a $13-billion oil refinery near Kitimat

may be hailed by some as a “game changer” for theproposed Enbridge pipeline project, but a moreaccurate description may be “pipe dream.”

While Black’s proposal instantly changed the par-ameters of at least part of the debate over the pipe-line, it’s still far from clear whether his idea will everachieve reality and ultimately have last-ing impact on the emerging controversyof what do with the Alberta oil sands.

Certainly, Black’s refinery pitch hasshaken things up. Enbridge’s NorthernGateway project has met widespreadopposition based on a number of con-cerns.

A refinery would answer at least oneof those concerns — arguably the big-gest of them all for many of the project’sopponents — but it leaves a host ofothers on the table. A refinery wouldmean tankers wouldn’t have to carry bitumen — thesludge-like byproduct from the oil sands — andtherefore the risk that a catastrophic spill of the nox-ious substance would be eliminated.

Black’s proposal also boasts another big benefit.A refinery would create thousands of jobs during itsconstruction, and an estimated 3,000 permanentjobs — well-paying jobs, by the way — when it wasoperational (by 2020). Presumably, many of thosejobs would go to First Nations members in theregion.

The refinery would be one of the biggest value-

added industrial projects B.C. has ever seen. Asidefrom huge job creation, it would also increase rev-enues to government through taxation.

But for all the upside that comes with such arefinery, there remain some significant downsidesin the minds of many of the pipeline’s foes. Not theleast of those problems is the fact that a pipelinestill has to be built across northern B.C. to feed therefinery, and that pipeline would be carrying noxious

bitumen, thus exposing hundreds ofstreams and waterways to a potentiallycatastrophic spill.

Opponents are also uncomfortablewith oil tankers travelling throughDouglas Channel to get to and from therefinery’s location. Even though theywon’t be carrying bitumen, many thinkthat if one of those tankers were to runaground a resulting spill could still bedisastrous.

Apart from not resolving all environ-mental issues, a refinery also doesn’t fit

with the current export plan for Alberta’s tar sands. The idea behind Northern Gateway is to push Albertacrude to China. The trouble is that China wants rawmaterials from its trading partners, not refined ones. The country wants to do its own refining, for a var-iety of reasons.

Of course, if the refinery and pipeline did indeedproceed (perhaps tied together by the joint reviewpanel examining the Enbridge proposal), it mayforce China to change its policy, if taking refined oilbecame their only access to the tar sands (keep inmind that China has also invested billions of dollars

buying up the companies that are mining the oilsands, a factor that could play a role in this debate).

Another potential obstacle to Black’s plan is theparty that could very well form the government inthis province next spring. The NDP’s energy criticsays the refinery does not change his party’s oppos-ition to the Enbridge pipeline.

John Horgan, who may very well be B.C.’s energyminister by the time Black’s environmental permitapplication is heard, says he’s not opposed to a refin-ery per se, but says Kitimat is the wrong locationfor it. As for the Clark government, it is a big backerof liquefied natural gas plants and pipelines in theKitimat region, but a refinery may not answer itsstated concerns about B.C. bearing all the risk fromthe Enbridge pipeline.

Finally, a refinery doesn’t appear to have lessenedopposition to the Northern Gateway project amongFirst Nations. Stewart Phillip, the president of theUnion of B.C. Indian Chiefs, has already dismissedthe refinery as a non-starter.

So Black has a big job ahead of him for this pro-ject to succeed, and the odds appear to be stackedagainst him. Boil it all down, and his refinery istied to a pipeline project that appears to be goingnowhere fast. But he’s added a new element to thedebate on the most contentious megaproject thisprovince has seen in decades. And a guy who wantsto find people to invest $13 billion and create thou-sands of jobs shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.

Is $13-billion pipeline plan a pipe dream?

Re: “New service helps cancer survivors: Surgicalnurse at Eagle Ridge one of only two trained areolatattoo artists in B.C.,” Friday, July 6.

I recently saw your article about Sandy Saunier atEagle Ridge Hospital, who is doing areola tattooing.

I think it’s great that you havebrought awareness to this much-neededtopic, but was very hurt with your lackof research on the topic. There are sev-eral micro-pigmentation artists in theLower Mainland that do this work — notjust two in B.C. I personally know threewomen besides myself who are certified and helpingwomen right here in Vancouver every day.

Also it is not ink used on patients. It’s a formula-tion of pigments that are natural and do not harmthe skin. Ink will bleed in the skin and can cause

pillowing, even rejection. So, as a sought-after pro-fessional in the field who has three levels of certifica-tion, I felt it was necessary to contact you so in thefuture you would do a little more research beforeyou print info that is false.

I work with the Cancer Centremonthly and we are not allowed topromote our services to patients there,so the fact that Ms. Saunier is able towork with the doctors there is a greathonour. I wish her well in her mission, but please know she is not alone and

many of us are fighting the fight to help womenbuild confidence every day after such a life devastat-ing disease.

The number of those earning more than$200,000 a year at ICBC spiked by 315 per centin the past five years, while regular employeeshave seen wages frozen since 2009. Execs werepampered with signing bonuses and perks, even getting cash for moving expenses. Theseperks do not seem to have been extended tothe frontline workers — which includes thosewho administer road tests to teenagers, a jobsuitable only for daredevils and those whowant to have prematurely white hair.

We should not be surprised. For years wehave been told that we have to attract “thebest” to public service. What that seems tomean in practice is forking over fistfuls of pub-lic cash to high-ranking civil servants.

Schubert himself exemplifies the way inwhich you cannot lose once you ascend highenough. He’s quitting — but only to work, atfull pay, as a “consultant” for the corporationfor almost a year. The man responsible forshovelling money away gets a reward, ratherthan a punishment for his transgressions.

In the private sphere, we have recently seenWall Street and Bay Street gripped with aculture of excess and easy money that almostdestroyed the world’s economy.

Why do we want public corporations toemulate the style of private ones in this way?

Get rid of Schubert now, and purge thosewho think like him from every Crown corpora-tion in B.C.

For some time now, we’ve been hearingfrom many British Columbians aroundthe province, as well as from interested

municipalities, that they want to know moreabout Internet voting.

As a society, we’ve grown increasinglycomfortable with the Internet as atool. In fact, 93 per cent of BritishColumbians now have accessto high-speed Internet, makingus one of the most connectedjurisdictions in the world. Many ofus have grown accustomed to theconvenience the Internet offers andwe often rely on it for functions like onlinebanking, shopping and booking travel plans.

This shows the potential Internet voting hasto increase accessibility and convenience andreinvigorate democracy in British Columbia. However, when it comes to something asintegral to our democracy as our electoralprocess, it is imperative that the appropriateprecautions are taken.

That’s why I, as Attorney General, haverequested that Elections BC convene anindependent panel to examine the potentialfor Internet voting here in B.C. This is thefirst step in exploring whether or not Internetvoting is a feasible option for our province.

Specifically, Elections BC has been asked tolook at best practices when it comes to internetvoting in other jurisdictions — both in Canadaand around the globe. The panel will look at

Internet voting in both local and provincialcontexts, as certain factors may be unique toeach level of government.

Most importantly, the panel will beexamining all potential security and privacyconcerns and how those may be addressed

before we would even considerimplementation. B.C.’s chiefelectoral officer Keith Archerwill chair the panel, which willhave members with expertise intechnology, cryptography, Internetsecurity policy and electoraladministration.

This panel will — and already has— sparked an engaging conversation aboutmodernizing our electoral process. Whilewe remain optimistic Internet voting couldincrease voter turnout in our province, we areexercising tremendous caution with somethingas significant as our province’s democracy.

I’ll look forward to receiving theindependent panel’s report and observing theinteresting debate about Internet voting as itunfolds.

A fond farewell to SamDear Canine God:

That incessant barking at the PearlyGates is probably my dog Sammy. He

doesn’t like to be ignored and, my apologies ifhe chewed on the gates, or worse, while wait-ing.

Sam had 13 good years down here, but itwas time he slipped the surly leash of Earth totouch the muzzle of canine god.

Sam came to us a lost puppywhose origins we never knew. Itwas a fateful knock on our doorfrom someone in the complex ask-ing, “Did you lose a puppy?”

No, but one long look into hiseyes, and we knew we had found one. A mar-vellous mutt of shepherd/lab mix, Sammy hasa deep and sonorous bark that belies his gentlenature. But be warned, he doesn’t suffer otherdogs well, at least not at first. He’s gruff, butgive him time and he will come around.

To make the transition easier please helphim find his friends Daisy, Bones, Buddha andthe love of his life, Maggie. It comforts me tothink of him running in that pack.

I’m not sure how canine heaven works, butdon’t expect your fences to contain Sam (noneever did down here on Earth).

And don’t think tightening his collaranother notch will stop him from slipping thenoose. Go ahead, slap a full-body harness onhim. We did (that won’t work either). He’s theHoudini of dogs, the great escape artist.

We suggest keeping cash on hand becausethe pound fees are going to add up.

Do you have a Walmart in canine heaven? When he runs, that’s one of his favouriteplaces to go. He also likes Canadian Tire and

SuperStore and any vehicle with an open dooris as irresistible to him as fresh carrots andMilk Bones.

Sam’s not too particular about where hesleeps (I swear I heard his nails clicking on thetiles last night, paying us a nocturnal visit). He was often told he was too big to sleep onthe bed … but that didn’t always deter him.

He’s fond of couches and antiquechairs, even though he was told hewas too big to sleep there too.

And don’t be alarmed if he flailsaway madly while sleeping; he’sjust chasing rabbits.

Please give Sam plenty of thingsto chew, like fine handcrafted furniture, siding, fences, telephone lines, barbecue gas hoses andthe occasional Italian leather shoe.

Family is everything to Sam and he getsanxious when his boys aren’t around. Knowthat when you open the door, he’ll always bebehind it happy to see you again.

He likes to have his belly rubbed … but nottoo hard. And, if you can, throw him a ballevery so often. He won’t fetch it, but he appre-ciates the gesture.

But most of all, tell him he’s a good dog, because he was a good dog, such a good dog.

And, like all good dogs, he’s gone to heaven.

A very special thanks to the folks at SardisAnimal Hospital. Your compassion and assist-ance in helping Sammy on his final journeywill always be remembered and appreciated.

Killer dies in prisonA man who killed his estranged wife and her

parents in a vicious knife attack has died inprison.

On Aug. 14, 46-year-old Darcy Bertrandwas found unresponsive in his cell at MissionInstitution, according to a press release fromthe Correctional Service of Canada. Staff per-formed CPR as they waited for an ambulanceto arrive. Bertrand was taken to AbbotsfordHospital and pronounced dead on Aug. 16.

In 1996, Bertrand murdered Henry andCeline Roufosse as they left Our Lady ofLourdes Catholic Church in Coquitlam after aThanksgiving day mass. A grandchild witnessedthe attack but was not physically harmed.

Five minutes later and a few blocks away,

Bertrand killed 29-year-old Annette Roufosse, his estranged wife. He eventually pleaded guiltyto three counts of second-degree murder.

In 2006, Port Moody MP James Moore spokeout against Bertrand’s request for parole.

“He is a violent murderer who should staybehind bars,” Moore said at the time.

Moore also protested Bertrand’s transfer toa minimum-security prison only 20 minutesaway from surviving family members after hehad served only seven years in jail.

At the time, Moore concluded his statementswith a message for the parole board: “KeepDarcy Bertrand where he belongs — behindbars.”

It looks like residents in the Village ofAnmore will have a few choices to markan X beside when the community headsto the polls this fall.

The nomination deadline for theupcoming byelection passed Friday with atotal of three candidates filing their nom-ination papers.

The candidates for the Sept. 22 voteare Arthur Crossman, Sagheer Jan andAnn-Marie Thiele. Both Crossman andJan live outside the village.

Crossman also ran in the last mayoralbyelection against current mayor HeatherAnderson in 2010, but ultimately lost.

A fall byelection was called after rookie

councillor Tim Laidler resigned his seatin June.

Anderson told The NOW she is expect-ing a good race for the seat, but is sur-prised two of three candidates don’t livein the village.

She said she’s not aware of the candi-dates’ involvement in the community.

The mayor is also predicting a decentturnout at the polls, given the election istaking place after summer and the lengthof time since the village last held a bye-lection to replace a councillor.

“People in Anmore take the electionseriously and they do come out to vote,”Anderson said.

Voter turnout in the last civic electionwas 54.3 per cent, which was on par withthe village’s 2010 byelection and 2008election.

Anderson said she’s also looking for-ward to having a new councillor in placeso council can move forward with pro-jects for the rest of the term.

At the time of his resignation, Laidlertold The NOW he decided to quit over theway council had hired its new CAO.

He suggested the village didn’t followthe criteria set out in the job application.

After four months of being actingCAO, Tim Harris was offered the job ona permanent basis. Harris worked for thevillage for 15 years before becoming CAO.

Anmore is no stranger to byelec-tions. The village also held a byelectionto replace former long-time mayor HalWeinberg, who stepped down at the endof 2009.

This year’s byelection is expected tocost $8,000 to $9,000.

Banding together for flood victims

Just days after the northern Philippines were hit by destruc-tive monsoon weather, a devastating tropical storm known asKai-Tak tore through the country, ravaging the nation.

In the wake of its destruction, the flood and storm leftapproximately 95 people dead and thousands more homelessand searching for shelter.

Despite being on opposite ends of the globe, Joey Albert isdoing her part to give back to a community that must begin torebuild from the ground up.

Albert and her band, the Manila Band, named after the coun-try’s capital city, have organized an Aug. 28 benefit concert forpeople affected by the storm.

“Every time there is a catastrophe of some sort in thePhilippines, this is something that we feel we can do [forpeople] back home,” said Albert, a Coquitlam resident whoimmigrated from the Philippines in 1995.

The 10-person Filipino band will perform songs from theirhomeland as well as some original tunes. Over the course of thenight, they hope to raise more than $1,000 in relief funds.

Albert’s mother is part of the congregation called the MarianMissionaries of the Holy Cross, who are situated in a conventnear the city of Marikina in the Philippines, which is mostlyunder water.

According to Albert, the funds will be wired to her motherwho will use them to buy food, basic clothing and toiletries forneighbouring families.

While Albert’s fundraising goals are ambitious, she hopes herchildren will learn some valuable life lessons from her effortsand determination to help her native country.

“It’s nice for my children see how lucky they are here, but italso helps them keep a sense of responsibility for those that weleft behind,” Albert said, adding that her mother and brotherare still in the Philippines.

“[When] I do something like this, I hope it … sends my chil-dren a message: just because we’re OK here doesn’t mean wecan turn our back on whoever we left behind.”

This is not the first relief concert Albert and the Manila Bandhave been a part of. In 2009, when the typhoon Ondoy hit thePhilippines, they raised $800, all of which was sent to those inneed.

The concert will take place at the Executive Plaza Hotel andConference Centre, at 405 North Rd. in Coquitlam on Tuesday,Aug. 28.

Tickets are $30 at the door or can be purchased throughAlbert at 604-537-8100. The $30 price includes the donationand a replenishable appetizer platter.

Westcoast SeniorsGive grandchildren the gift of an education

T H I N K B E Y O N D C A S H

T hey say it’s more fun being a grandparentthan a parent because you can spoil the

kids and then send them home. Birthdaysare particularly exciting, with many

grandparents showering gifts on theirgrateful grandkids. In fact, a BMOFinancial Group study revealed thatmore than 70 per cent of Canadiansgive their grandchildren, godchildren,

nephews and nieces an average of$100 in monetary gifts annually.

With the cost of a four-yearuniversity degree costing

upwards of $60,000,grandparents can helpby earmarking some of

those cash gifts for post-secondary education. One of the most sensiblevehicles is a RegisteredEducation Savings Plan(RESP), which works bestwhen opened as soon asthat cute grandchild isborn. Small chunks addup, with government

grants and compounding returns adding significantlyto total savings.

The government offers a Canadian Education SavingsGrant of 20 per cent, up to a maximum of $500annually, on all RESP contributions. An annual RESPcontribution of $2,500 results in the maximum grant.

”The grant is what sets RESPs apart. A grant is like freemoney, or you can also think of it as an immediate 20-per-cent return on your RESP contribution,” said RobertArmstrong, vice president, managed solutions andregistered plans strategy, BMO Investments Inc.

BMO offers these tips for grandparents:

• Start early – Ask for the baby’s Social Insurance Numberand open an RESP to get a head start on savings.

• Up the ante – If the child already has an RESP, gift themoney to the parent or open a separate RESP.

• Think beyond cash – Including investments suchas mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs) andguaranteed investment certificates (GICs) in your RESPcan maximize the potential for growth.

For more information on RESPs, please visit:www.bmo.com/resp.

Recent surveys showthere are fewer

young people and moresenior citizens behind thewheel in the United States.According to the NationalHousehold Travel Survey, members of Generation Y,who are between the agesof 16 to 34, are driving less.

From 2001 to 2009, theaverage annual number

of vehicle miles travelledby Gen-Y-ers dropped by23 per cent. Some findthe process to be a hassle, others are frightened bythe prospect of controllinga vehicle, and others aremerely taking a greenapproach to transportation, choosing bicycles or publictransportation.

There is also the high cost

of owning and fueling-up avehicle today.

On the flip side, researchersat the University ofMichigan have found thatpeople age 70 and oldermake up the largest groupof drivers on the road– even higher than those intheir 40s and 50s.

The official tourist slogan for the province is‘Ontario — yours to discover.’

The Coquitlam junior Adanacs have discovered sofar that it isn’t going to be easy.

As the Minto Cup heads into the crucial home-stretch this week, the B.C. champion Adanacs arestaring at a semifinal contest against the host WhitbyWarriors tonight (Wednesday). It will be a rematch ofTuesday’s game, past NOW deadlines.

The strategy entering their final round-robin testwith the Warriors was primarily to stay away fromblack cats, broken mirrors and arched ladders.

“I think both teams will keep it simple,” saidCoquitlam coach Neil Dinsdale. “At that stage itdoesn’t matter if we win 100-0 or they win 100-0.

The key is to come out healthy and ready for the nextgame.”

Coquitlam drew the short straw for opening day, getting matched with Ontario champion OrangevilleNorthmen on opening night, just 18 hours after land-ing in Toronto.

Although they came out with a polished, force-ful effort on Saturday, their energy couldn’t matchOrangeville’s over the final 20 minutes, as the Ontariosquad broke open a 4-4 game with five straight goalsto start the third period.

Ben McIntosh netted three goals in the loss, withsingles by Robert Church and Tyler Garrison. TheNorthmen received four-point efforts from JordanCritch and Jeremy Noble.

A day later, Alberta’s Calgary Mountaineers provedto be the perfect tonic for the more-settled Adanacs.

Coquitlam took the lead off Church’s tally just25 seconds into the contest, and it was followed by

Wesley Berg’s marker 32 seconds later. Before thegame was six minutes old, the B.C. champions had afive-goal lead. Up 7-0 after 20 minutes, the Adanacstook the opportunity to get everyone plenty of floortime while attempting to avoid any injuries.

“It was the kind of start we had talked about, wetalked about it before the game,” said Dinsdale. “Itwas our goal to come out with lots of energy and wekind of overwhelmed them.”

No Alberta team has been able to beat a B.C. orOntario team in a single game since the currentformat was adopted.

Refusing to look past his next opponent, thecoach said Whitby will present an interesting andchallenging opponent.

“They play smart lacrosse, they move the ball quickand play at a high pace,” he noted. “It should be a

One month ago, PortCoquitlam’s Brittni Wolczykwas picking up her silver med-als and wishing for a secondshot.

Last week, the teen got herchance — and turned silverinto gold.

The 14-year-old track andfield athlete capped a hugeyear in Charlottetown, PEI,by posting provincial andpersonal records to win boththe under-16 girls discus andjavelin events at the LegionNational Youth Track andField championships.

Wolczyk began the eventby registering a discus throwof 35.92 metres — more thanone full metre better than herpersonal best, set earlier thisyear.

It came on her final throw.Coquitlam’s Chanell Botsis,

who edged out Wolczyk atthe B.C. Summer Games inJuly for the discus and javelingolds, finished third with athrow of 34.45 metres.

Wolczyk would collect thejavelin gold in similar fashion— on her sixth and final tossof the event — with a throw of44.97 metres.

It was three metres morethan Botsis, who picked up thesilver.

“She hoped for a medal, sogold was pretty much icing,”said proud mom Nadia. “She’svery focused and hard work-ing. She had to make a lotof sacrifices this summer topractice.”

Botsis also scored a gold, setting a new Legion recordwith her hammer throw tossof 50.70 metres, edging outPoCo’s Teagan Rasche, whofinished second with a throwof 48.20 metres.

Rasche would also nether own gold medal inCharlottetown, winning thegirls 1,500 metre race. Shewon it with a time of sevenminutes 52.40 seconds — 20seconds ahead of her nearestrival.

Botsis finished with a gold, silver and bronze.

Absence, it is said, makes the heart growfonder.

For Port Coquitlam’s Andrew Murphy, beingaway from the game of lacrosse also made himhungrier.

And his timely return has given him a tasteof winning, to boot.

Murphy is a big part of the Tri-Cities Banditssuccessful march through the West CoastSenior B Lacrosse circuit this year, as the clubearned its fifth straight league title.

They swept the Valley Rebels 3-0 last week, capped with a 14-5 mauling in PoCo.

Murphy, who led all shooters with 18 goalsand 20 assists over seven playoff games, wasselected the league’s playoff MVP.

For someone who’s never experienced aprovincial championship in 12 years of lacrosseaction, it’s all icing from now on.

“This is just a good group of guys,” saidMurphy of the Bandits’ success. “Everyone isaccountable to each other, everyone knowstheir job and does it.

“We’ve really put the pieces together.”His route to the Bandits roster followed a

bad bounce almost two years ago. As a two-yearveteran, Murphy took on a bigger offensive rolewith the Maple Ridge Burrards of the WesternLacrosse Association in 2010, but an off-seasonknee injury cost him all of 2011.

While enduring an extended rehab pro-gram, Murphy chose to focus on his job withBurnaby’s parks and recreation departmentand put boxla in the background. Some friendsencouraged him to shake off the rust and tryout for Tri-City this year.

“I trained hard, did the physio and knew the

process,” he noted. “I had a couple of friendson the Bandits who said I should come out — Ididn’t have high expectations but things wentwell from the start.”

The rust appeared non-existent, as the six-foot-one lefthander finished third overall inleague scoring with 35 goals and 42 assistsover 19 games.

Even in junior, his offensive skills took abackseat to his usual checking role — emerg-ing in his final season with 27 goals and 29assists over 21 games as a member of the PoCojunior Saints.

By his second year in Maple Ridge, Murphymoved up the ranks and contributed 11 goalsand 18 assists over 15 games. The team wasquickly ushered out of the playoffs.

That’s where this year’s run has been a truetreat for the renewed sniper.

The key, Murphy notes, is that the Banditsmay be the reigning senior B power but theydon’t take it for granted.

“There are lots of leaders in this dressingroom, and a lot of the guys have been togetherfor a long time,” said Murphy. “I think I offersome leadership, having played at a higherlevel before. I read the floor well and put theball in the net.”

In the future, Murphy is looking at headingback to senior A and a possible tryout in theNational Lacrosse League. For now, his focusis on seeing how far the club can go at thePresidents Cup championship in Edmonton.

“For me, winning the provincial champion-ship was awesome. I’ve never won a provincialtitle before. I’ve never been out of the firstround of the playoffs before.”

The Bandits are in the mix of seven teamscompeting for the Presidents title. Their firstgame comes Monday against the host Slash. The tourney rolls until Sept. 2.

Leading the breakout on Sunday were Vancouver Northeast Chiefs’ Mathew Barzal, centre, and winger Jeff Wight, at right, during a B.C. major midget exhibition testagainst the Greater Vancouver Canadians at Coquitlam Planet Ice.

They aren’t the defending Western Lacrosse Associationchampions for nothing.

The Langley Thunder unleashed a pinpoint offence, blast-ing 59 shots at Nick Rose, en route to a 7-3 victory over theCoquitlam Adanacs in Game 1 of their best-of-seven champion-ship series.

The two teams tangled Tuesday, after NOW deadline, and willcontinue their rivalry Thursday in Game 3 in Langley.

A three-goal outburst to start the second period broke open a1-1 match for the Thunder. Port Moody native Athan Iannuccigot the ball rolling, a powerplay tally that was followed by mark-ers from Brett Hickey and Garrett Billings.

Although Steve McKinlay pulled Coquitlam to within two latein the third, the visitors were unable to put much more thana cursive offensive flurry forward. Langley, meanwhile, main-tained its steady attack right until the end.

Billings finished with two goals and two assists, while JoelMcCready also tallied twice for the Thunder. Scoring for theAdanacs were Jason Jones and Daryl Veltman.

The Thunder were well-rested heading into the series openeron Sunday, sweeping past Burnaby. Coquitlam, meanwhile, justclosed out its semifinal series a handful of days earlier.

The series continues on Saturday, 7:45 p.m. in Coquitlamfor Game 4. If necessary, the two teams will play on Aug. 27 inLangley, Aug. 29 in Coquitlam, and Aug. 31 in Langley.
