The rubber seals of the topmust be washed with wateronly. Apply talcum power or

use specific rubber care products (sili-cone spray) if the seals are dry or par-tially stuck.

Rinse immediately to removesoap to prevent stains andblots. Repeat the operation if

needed.

Waterproofing the top

Use specific waterproofing products forfabric tops.

Follow the instructions on thewaterproofing product con-tainer for optimum results.

Remove as much dirt from the surface ofthe soft top with a soft brush or vacuumcleaning before washing it. This operationwill considerably improve the final result.

In absence of specific products, use waterand mild soap applied with a sponge prefer-ably in the shade for washing.

Rinse the soft top with clean water afterhaving eliminated all the stains.

Hand washing is recommended; modernautomatic washing systems equipped withsoft brushes which do not apply excessivepressure and employ specific soft topproducts may be used.

Interior top fabricRemove dust with a soft brush. Avoid us-ing hard brushes made of synthetic mater-ial to prevent damaging the fabric beyondrepair. Clean the surface with a microfibre clothor soft sponge dipped in a solution of wa-ter and mild soap. Clean the entire surface, including thezones where cleaning is not needed, to pre-vent stains.Use common, car care mild stain re-movers for more stubborn stains. Apply by blotting (never rubbing) directlyon the area of the stain.

Leave the car in the shade after washingavoiding direct sunlight.

STARTING THE VEHICLE

Notes

❒ At starting, the system sets in AUTOmode.

❒ With the buttons 1, N, R and brakepedal depressed, the 1st speed, neutral(N) and reverse (R) can be engaged.

❒ With the buttons 1, N, R and with-out depressing the brake pedal, nogear change request is implemented bythe system.

❒ With the levers on the steering wheel(see paragraph “Levers on the steer-ing wheel”) and even with the brakepedal depressed, no gear can be en-gaged.

❒ If the vehicle is switched off with modeSPORT or NORMAL active, themode previously set is maintainedwhen the engine is restarted.

With key extracted from the starting de-vice, the buttons on the gearbox dash-board (fig. 12) can be pressed with orwithout the brake pedal depressed. Whenthe buttons are pressed, the system willnot perform any activation, therefore thespeed engaged before switching off the en-gine remains engaged.

With vehicle stationary and key in theMAR position (ignition-operated electri-cal services activated), the screen displaysthe speed engaged and the active operat-ing mode (automatic = AUTO or manu-al = no display).

ABARTH COMPETIZIONETRANSMISSION

The vehicle is equipped with an electron-ically controlled manual transmissionknown as Abarth Competizione trans-mission which allows two operating log-ics: MANUAL and AUTO.

The transmission consists of a conven-tional manual transmission to which anelectronically-controlled electrohydraulicdevice that controls the clutch and gearshifts automatically has been added.

12

OPERATING MODES

The transmission can work in two oper-ating modes:

❒ the first manual type (MANUAL), inwhich the driver decides directly whento change gear;

❒ the second completely automatic (AUTO), in which the system decideswhen to make the gear change.

Manual operation (MANUAL)

In this operating mode, the driver is re-sponsible for choosing the best gear ra-tio to engage, depending on the car op-erating conditions.

To change to a higher gear, operate thelever “+” on the steering wheel; to changeto a lower gear, operate the lever “−”.

If the request is accepted by the system,when the gear change is completed, thedisplay shows the new gear engaged.

Automatic operation (AUTO)

To switch automatic operation (AUTO)on/off, press the button A/M on the trans-mission panel; activation is signalled by theword AUTO and the gear engagedshown on the display (fig. 13).

In AUTO mode the system changes geardepending on the vehicle speed, the en-gine rpm and the intensity with which theaccelerator pedal is pressed.

NOTE The system shows the gear actu-ally engaged on the display and not thegear requested by the driver.

If the request is not accepted by the sys-tem, the display shows the gear engagedbefore the request and an acoustic signalis emitted.

If the gear change request may adverselyaffect the correct operation of the engineor the transmission, the system will not al-low the gear change but will automatical-ly change down if the engine reaches theidling speed (e.g. during deceleration).

fig. 14 F0S0164m

To move the vehicle, the 1st, 2nd or the re-verse (R) gear must always be engaged(with brake pedal depressed).

A gear change can be requested using thecontrol lever without having to switch offthis mode: this function known as “gearsuggestion” suspends the automatic modefor the time necessary to carry out thegear selection requested by the driver.

SPORT FUNCTION

The driver can also use the SPORT func-tion which enables a sporty driving settingby intervening on gear changes, the enginecontrol unit and the steering. To activatethis function, press the SPORT button(fig. 14) located on the dashboard.

“Kick Down” function

The "Kick Down" function is also available:if necessary (for example when overtak-ing), the system downshifts one or moregears (if the rpm allow it) in order to pro-vide suitable power and torque for the ac-celeration requested by the driver.

In this way the engine speed and powercan be suddenly increased and then auto-matically restored when the conditions setpreviously are resumed.

WARNING The use of the “Kick Down”function is recommended only when over-taking or accelerating fast, in order not toincrease fuel consumption.

Pressing the button SPORT on the dash-board activates the “SPORT” mode (theword SPORT is displayed on the screenlocated inside the turbocharger pressuregauge – see paragraph “Information dis-played”). If the button is pressed a secondtime, the “SPORT” mode is deactivated.

STARTING THE ENGINE

To start the engine press the brake pedal:the system engages neutral (N) automati-cally.

After the starting procedure, the 1st speed(1) or reverse (R) can be engaged.

Independently of the mode (AUTO/MANUAL), to engage the 1st speed or thereverse (R), it is necessary to depress thebrake pedal and press the button 1 onthe transmission panel and the button R toengage the 1st speed and the reverse re-spectively.

The levers on the steering wheel work on-ly if the 1st speed has been engaged bypressing the button 1: setting off in 2nd

speed is therefore possible by operatingthe “+“ lever with brake pedal depressed(in this case the selected mode AUTO/MANUAL is kept active).

IMPORTANT The 1st speed cannot be en-gaged by pressing the lever “−” on thesteering wheel.

14

The engagement of a lower (or higher) gearis only permitted if the engine revs allow it.

LEVERS ON THE STEERINGWHEEL fig. 15

These enable sequential gear shifting.

– steering wheel lever + (pulling lever to-wards driver, see fig. 16): engage highergear;

– steering wheel lever − (pulling lever to-wards driver, see fig. 16): engage lowergear.

Engaging reverse (R)

Reverse (R) can only be engaged with ve-hicle stationary and brake pedal depressed.

Proceed as follows:

❒ press the brake pedal (vehicle com-pletely stationary);

❒ press button R on the transmissionpanel;

❒ release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

When reverse is engaged, the systememits an acoustic signal.

If the brake pedal is not depressed (and thevehicle is stationary), the display will showa dedicated message (see paragraph “Warn-ing lights and messages”) and the system willautomatically engage neutral (N).

ENGAGING NEUTRAL (N)

Neutral (N) can only be engaged with ac-celerator pedal released, regardless of thebrake pedal condition (depressed or not)(in any case, pressing the brake pedal is al-ways recommended).

The display will show the letter N to-gether with the active operating mode.

When trying to engage the neutral withaccelerator pedal depressed, the systemwill not accept the request and maintainthe speed engaged. In this case the displaywill show a dedicated message (see para-graph “Warning lights and messages”) andan acoustic signal is emitted.

To engage a speed from the neutral (N)position, press button 1 on the transmis-sion panel (it is not necessary to press thebrake pedal): the gearbox will immediate-ly choose the correct gear according tothe vehicle’s speed.

IMPORTANT With the vehicle in motion,the request is accepted and executed if thevehicle speed drops below 3 km/h within3 seconds from the request: if the requestis not executed, the system will keep thespeed engaged or, if the speed of the cardrops below 10 km/h, will put the gearboxin neutral (N) and the manoeuvre will haveto be repeated.

DISPLAYED INFORMATION

When the ignition key is turned to theMAR position, after about 1 second, the display will show the speed engagedand the last mode used (AUTO or MANUAL):

N = neutral;

1 = first speed;

2 = second speed;

3 = third speed;

4 = fourth speed;

5 = fifth speed;

R = reverse

The vehicle always starts with the modeAUTO active.

If the SPORT function is used, the display(fig. 18) inside the turbocharger pressuregauge will show the word SPORT.

IMPORTANT If 10 seconds elapse withthe ignition key in the MAR position andthe display does not show the gear en-gaged, turn the key to the STOP position,wait for the display to switch off and thenrepeat the manoeuvre. If the fault persists,contact an Abarth Dealership.

WARNING BUZZER

For safety reasons, an acoustic warning isemitted when parking the vehicle with thegearbox in neutral (N) (the warning canbe heard when the ignition key is turnedto the STOP position).

With the vehicle stationary, engine run-ning and (1st), (2nd) or (R) gear engaged,the system turns on the buzzer and au-tomatically shifts the gearbox to neutral(N) when:

❒ the accelerator and/or the brake pedalare not operated for at least 3 minutes;

❒ the brake pedal is pressed for longerthan 10 minutes;

❒ the driver’s door is opened and the ac-celerator pedal or the brake pedal arenot operated for at least 1.5 seconds;

❒ a fault is detected in the transmission.

PARKING THE CAR

To park safely, keeping a foot on the brakepedal, the 1st or reverse (R) gear must beengaged and, in case of parking uphills/downhills, the handbrake must be en-gaged. Wait until the indication of the gearengaged disappears on the display beforereleasing the brake pedal.

IMPORTANT NEVER leave the car withthe gearbox in neutral (N).

GENERAL WARNINGS

❒ With car stationary and gear engaged,always keep the brake pedal presseduntil you decide to set off, then releasethe brake and accelerate gradually.

❒ During prolonged stops with the en-gine running, it is advisable to keep thegearbox in neutral (N).

❒ In order to safeguard the efficiency ofthe clutch, do not use the acceleratorto keep the car stationary (e.g. whenstopped on an incline); if the clutchoverheats it could be damaged. Usethe brake pedal or the hand brake andpress the accelerator pedal only whenyou decide to set off.

❒ Use the 2nd gear only when you needmore control when setting off for ma-noeuvres on surfaces with poor grip.

❒ If, with reverse (R) engaged, you needto engage the 1st speed or vice versa,change gear only with vehicle station-ary and brake pedal pressed.

❒ Although it is highly inadvisable, if youare driving downhill and, for unex-pected reasons, you let the car moveforward with the transmission in neu-tral (N), when there is a request to en-gage a speed, depending on the actu-al speed of the car, the system willautomatically engage the best speedfor the correct transmission of drivetorque to the wheels.

❒ When necessary, with the engineswitched off, it is possible to engagethe 1st speed, reverse (R) or neutral(N) with key in AVV position andbrake pressed. In this case, it is advis-able to change allowing at least 5 sec-onds to elapse between one gearchange and the next to safeguard theoperation of the hydraulic system andthe pump in particular.

❒ Fully and quickly depressing the accel-erator pedal activates a function thatallows a “lively” departure.

❒ For departures on a hill, acceleratinggradually but fully immediately afterhaving released the handbrake or thebrake pedal allows the engine to great-ly increase the number of revs andtackle the steepest gradients withmore torque at the wheels.

MANUAL GEARBOX(for versions/markets, where provided)

To engage the gears, press the clutch ped-al fully and shift the gear lever A into therequired position (the diagram is shownon the knob fig. 19).

IMPORTANT The car can only be put in-to reverse gear when it has stopped mov-ing completely. With the engine running,wait for at least 2 seconds with the clutchpedal fully pressed before engaging re-verse to prevent damage to the gears andgrating.

Furthermore, to assist the transmission ofthe drive torque, a limit on the engine revswhen setting off at 2700 rpm may be no-ticed. When the clutch pedal is releasedand the vehicle is being driven, the enginerev restriction is disabled.

To engage reverse gear R from neutral,move the lever to the right and then back-wards.

IMPORTANT The clutch pedal should beused only to change gear. Do not drivewith your foot resting on the clutch ped-al, however lightly. For versions/marketswhere provided, the electronic clutch con-trol may intervene if it interprets incor-rect driving style as a fault.

fig. 19

Depress the clutch pedal ful-ly to change gear correctly.

Therefore, the floor area under thepedal unit should be clear: ensurethat any rubber mats are flat and donot interfere with the pedals.

WARNING

Do not drive with your handresting on the gear lever, be-cause this pressure, even iflight, can wear out the inter-

nal components of the gearbox overtime.
