Ability to explain the relevance of coordi- nation to functional hand use. Purpose: Hand therapists apply tissue-specific interventions to isolate particular anatomical structures in order to achieve improved mobility and function of the upper extremity. But a patient?s ability to perform rote exercise in itself does not guaran- tee effective, coordinated or smooth functional hand use. Pediatric occupational therapy resources provide an excellent source of information and ideas for enhancing coordinated hand use. The purposes of this poster are to review the contributions of pediatric occupational therapy to the adult hand therapy popula- tion and to present examples of coordination activities aimed at improving functional hand use in patients of any age. Methods: This poster will provide definitions for grasp, fine prehension (pincer grasp), in-hand manipulation (shift, rota- tion, and translation), proprio- ception, and kinesthesia. The developmental sequence of grip and fine prehension will be pre- sented with examples of activities using photographs to show the delicate adjustments in motions that are involved in these tasks. Suggestions for grading the activ- ities to increase the coordina- tional challenge will be offered. Results: Translating available motion into function requires cer- tain complex sensorimotor capac- ities of the patient?s hand use to be intact and accessible. This is es- pecially true for fine motor hand functions and may be apparent in the rehabilitation of either the dominant or the non-dominant extremity. Without facilitating fine motor skills, patients may have acceptable flexibility of joints and muscle-tendon units but their motion may look awkward and may be lacking in smooth and co- ordinated flow, negatively affect- ing their function. Conclusion: Coordination activ- ities that look easy may in fact be quite challenging for some hand therapy patients, even those with excellent range of motion. This poster presents ideas for ac- tivities aimed at maximizing hand coordination. Relevance: The hand is a percep- tual entity that has been described as an information- seeking organ. The hand allows our patients to interpret and ana- lyze the tactile properties of size, shape, and texture and to use in- hand manipulation in order to identify objects and handle them effectively. Through manual ex- ploration by way of coordinated hand use, our patients recognize the relationship of objects to their bodies and to gravity. Without the accurate interpretation of these characteristics, hand function is compromised. Addressing coor- dination provides a bridge to recovery of meaningful hand function.
