Principal’s Report
On Tuesday night Coomealla High School held a very successful parent/teacher evening. It is very important that parents feel comfortable to come to the school and talk with their children’s teachers. It is an essential communication that builds the collaboration between school and family.
It is also a two way communication, which many people forget. The teachers take this opportunity to tell parents about how their children are progressing and make suggestions for their continued improvement. Also a very important flow of information comes from the parents to the teachers. Communication about potential problems at home, family issues or change in behaviour at home is very important and can have a positive effect on how a student is taught, what support they might need at school and explain changes in behaviour noticed in class.
Good communication is the key to developing that positive partnership between school and home. It is always important to come to parent/teacher interviews. If you were unable to attend last week because of time constraints or would just like to talk to your son or daughter’s teachers, contact the school and make an appointment.
On Monday 12th August we will be holding a parent information evening for students in Year 10 who will be entering Year 11. This is a particularly important time with a great many new concepts and ideas to understand. The evening presents another opportunity to create that close collaboration with the school. A full understanding of the process of selecting subjects for senior school and the consequences that it brings will only assist with the success at school of these young people.
It seems unfair that important decisions such as whether or not to go to university have to be addressed at such any early age. However a poor choice of subjects can rule out getting an ATAR and attending a university from the start. That is why it is so very important that parents understand this process and can guide students through what can be a difficult and confusing time.
Effective two way communication is one of the cornerstones of a successful education. Both parents and teachers want the best for students. If there are issues outside the school which might impact on the performance of students it is important that the school is aware of these. If these issues are of a confidential nature they will be handled carefully. Likewise, if the school has concerns about the behaviour, educational performance or peer relations of a student then it is our duty to keep parents informed and work together to solve any potential problems.
Education is a joint effort between the school, the parents and the students themselves. If the collaborative balance is out between these groups then the successful education of the student can be at risk. If you have any concerns about your child’s education or have information to pass on please contact the school on 5027 4506.

Climate Clever Energy Savers
For the past term, Maddy Pollesel, Harleigh Ussher, DJ Sullivan, Jesse Martin, Jessica Mazey, Paige Ketting, Katelin Kemp, Callum Mackie and Jesse Anderson have been working on a project called the CCES to apply for a grant up to $2000. With this grant we can build an outdoor learning area for the school and cover the air-conditioning vents in the school’s science laboratories. This will help lower the school’s electricity bills. Students at Coomealla High School are very passionate about the environment. In previous years, the school has applied for and been granted solar panels and a heater for a science lab.
By comparing last year’s energy audit and the energy audit for 2013 we found out that:
The most electrical energy is used on air conditioners, lights, heaters and hot water systems. We used a little less energy on heating this year (because we have a new reverse cycle air conditioner in laboratory 4, bought with CCES funding in 2012, that uses less electricity than the old one). Although we used a similar amount of electrical energy to what was used in 2012, our school actually pays out less in electricity bills because last year we received funding and installed solar panels. We now save money on electricity.
Total Electrical Energy charges for June/July 2012 = $1,748.85 = 21,828.000 kWh Total Electrical Energy charges for June/July 2013 = $1,458.85 = 18,486.53.000 kWh
Electrical Energy used by the school:
351 kWh per day of energy on air conditioners in the summer.
1080 kWh per day on hot water systems. 193.864 kWh of energy on internal and external lights.
SO WE SAVED 3,341.47 kWh of electrical energy in the June/July 2013 period.
SO WE ARE SAVING $290.00 PER MONTH ON ELECTRICTY BILLS.
By Harleigh Ussher and Katelin Kemp

Well Done Boys! – Swan Shield Win
On Thursday 18th July the Coomie Under 15 team travelled to Hay to play the next round of the Swan Shield against West Wyalong. It was a very blustery day, but the boys persevered and came out victorious 98 to 15.
The West Wyalong boys gave it a good crack with the team they had, but Coomie’s skill level and some size differences gave us the upper hand. However, this win should not be taken lightly as the teams out east do have some class about them.
Overall, the bus trip was mostly an enjoyable one and I would like to give a big thanks to Brian Tyers for volunteering to umpire and Mr Yager for his assistance with strapping and running water.
Well Done Boys!
The team consisted of:
Rhys Mutch, Justin Redpath, Kobe Mutch, Bailey Tyers, Bevan Wade, Bailey Chatterton, Colby Wade, Mathew Job, Cambell Davison, Jacob Ralph, Joel King, Derek Smith, Zac Witte, Jake Wakefield, Jarrod Brander, Louis Fasolino, Oliver Mangan, Jordan McKinnon (thanks for being the goal umpire), Geoff Bottrell and Jack Christensen.
Athletics Carnival Oxley makes it a clean sweep winning the Athletics Carnival in a convincing manner. Congratulations to all students who participated in events over the two days of the carnival. As always staff has done a tremendous job in ensuring the safe running of events.
