FROM THE PRINCIPAL

First term has been extremely busy for staff and

students this year. As well as performing well in

their class learning, students have been involved

in many sporting and extracurricular activities

throughout the term. I would like to thank the staff

for all their effort that they have put in to improve

the students learning and wellbeing at school.

Our 2018-20 School Plan has been completed

and is now available on the school website. I

would like to thank the parents who provided valuable input into this process at our

Staff Development evenings. Also a big thanks to the parents who attended the

Police Liaison evening, it was very useful and informative. I urge all parents and

carers to take the opportunity to attend these evening sessions in the future.

I would like to invite parents to attend our P&C meeting at 6.30 pm on Wednesday

May 9th in the school library. It is an important meeting as we will be discussing the

P&C involvement in the Up2date Art exhibition in July. This is the main fundraiser

for the school this year and we need as many people as possible to be involved.

The P&C has kindly donated $5,000 towards the construction of shade sails over

the primary play equipment. This is due to be completed during the school

holidays.

The school was successful in gaining a $20,000 Digital Literacy School Grant. As

part of this grant, primary and secondary staff will undergo training with an expert

facilitator this week. This will build staff skills in coding which is being introduced

into the curriculum. The grant is also being used to purchase 3D printers and

Robotics kits. This is a very exciting development for both staff and students.

Congratulations to Mrs White on gaining permanency through Merit Selection as

an Assistant Principal at Coolamon Central School.

I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday break and all students will

return on Tuesday May 1st.

SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS AND ELECTIVE FEES

Statements for school fees, including electives, have now been posted.

While the course fee for your child’s scholastic year is voluntary, elective fees are compulsory and are used to buy consumables for these subjects. If you are experiencing difficulty paying your elective fees please contact the school.

Payment options include cash, cheque or Eftpos via the front office or via the $ Make a Payment tab on the school website. Please pay your contributions as soon as possible to allow the school to continue with important educational programs in 2018.

WELLBEING AWARDS - SCIENCE FACULTY

The Science faculty has recognised students displaying the positive core values of Coolamon Central

School including Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Be Ready. Stage 4 and 5 students have been

engaging with topics including Cells and Electromagnetic Radiation while Senior Students have been

studying core concepts in Chemistry, Biology, Senior Science and a brand new course called

Investigating Science. On a sad note, the passing of one of the world’s greatest Physicist’s, Professor

Stephen Hawking, has left a black hole in the scientific community. Stage 4 (Year 7 and 8) students are

reminded that home learning tasks are due each week with a parent signature. This year’s National

Science Week theme is Game Changers and Change Makers and various activities to engage with the

concept will be held in Term 3. Congratulations to the awards recipients as listed below.

P&C MEETING AT 6.30PM

We need as many people as possible to attend this important meeting as we will be

discussing the P&C’s involvement in the Up2date Art exhibition in July, which is the main

fundraiser for the school this year.


The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) for 2018 commences on

Monday 5 March. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading in

students and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a

competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to

read more widely.

The PRC is open to available for all NSW students from Kindergarten to Year

9, and does not close until Friday 31 August.

Entering the PRC is simple. Just go to the Premier’s Reading Challenge

website and register your name. Each time you finish a book, log it on the

online entry form – the school does the rest. Details about how many books

you need to read are in the table below:

Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 can either read the books on their own, read them with someone or have

someone read them to you. The library is full of PRC books – come on in and start reading – Mrs White and Ms

Batcheldor are waiting to help you get started.

In week 9 Coolamon Central School held their annual Easter Hat Parade. There were some extravagant hats on display which were made by the students, Preschool and Early Child Care. Students participated in an Easter Egg hunt and also had the opportunity to showcase their artistic skills in a colouring-in competition. It was lovely to see so many parents/carers at our parade to support our students.

Don’t miss out on this year’s Book Fair, where every dog has its Book Fair day and books are the

cat’s pyjamas! Yes, it’s almost time; the Scholastic Book Fair for 2018 arrives in the library on

Monday of Week 2 next term. Scholastic is the nation’s leader in quality Book Fairs, with an

exciting range of recently published children’s books and educational products from Australia and

around the world.

Students will have the opportunity to view the books for sale at set times prior to purchasing. They

will bring home a wish list and be able to purchase books during the times detailed below. (Look

closely – you can purchase before, after and during both recess and lunch.) Remember, the vast

mass of knowledge in the world is often gained by reading; now is the perfect opportunity to

encourage your children to acquire a love of this valuable tool.

NB: Cash is the preferred method of payment. All cheques are to be made payable to Scholastic

Australia. EFTPOS facilities will be available.

Its has been a massive term for Careers at Coolamon Central School. We have been lucky to be one of a few

chosen schools in NSW to be involved in a ‘Rural and Remote Careers Initiative’ for 2018. This initiative is aimed to;

• Strengthen the smooth transition of students from primary to secondary school

• Raise student expectations and pathways into further study and or training

• Increase teacher’s ability to incorporate elements of career education into their curriculum

• Build strong community partnerships to implement career education K-12

• Strengthen school leadership capacity to lead a coordinated career education program K-12.

This term, Mrs Besgrove has been busy visiting the primary classes from our school, also visiting our feeder schools

including; Matong, Marrar and Ganmain. It was so much fun going through the careers bag and brainstorming career

opportunities we could look at in the future. Careers is looking at taking a technology approach over the next term

with some STEM career ideas. We hope to host other primary and feeder schools for a mini primary careers expo in

term three. Keep your eye out for more details.

We have had a number of excursions, including a visit to our Year 6 students from CSU Future Moves and a day at

CSU for Agrihack for selected primary students. Secondary have also been engaging in plenty of exciting career

opportunities including the Wodonga Army logistics training day which saw our students have the opportunity for a

hands on learning approach about the job availabilities in the defence force.

Looking forward to the next exciting term of careers adventures and opportunities.

NSWCHS LAWN BOWLS KNOCKOUT This term the Coolamon Central School has been competing in the Riverina Knockout of the NSWCHS Lawn Bowls. Heath Walker, Brian Hare, Tyson Pellow and Beau Hilton have represented the school throughout the three games. In the first round the school hosted Griffith and won the game 23-11. In round two, the boys travelled to Temora and came away with a convincing 22-7 victory. In the Semi-final the boys travelled over to Junee and once again came away with a resounding victory of 22-8. We now await to find out who our final opponent will be. If victorious the boys will head off to play in the State Finals later in the year.

Coolamon Central School year 7-9 girls went to Paramore park on Thursday 5 April to compete in a

League tag gala day.

Our school first played a TRAC team and lost narrowly. We then took on Kooringal High with a

draw being the result. Lastly we played the top Kooringal High squad, only being defeated by a

narrow margin again.

One of the great things to see was the development of skill during the day and the fact the girls

kept trying for the entire game, even when a win was out of sight.

Best on the day was Lakeasha Curtis-Dremmel who’s defence kept the opposition scores low and

Sophie Griffith who demonstrated her quality ball playing skills out of dummy half.

recognise our school leaders who continually represent our school with pride and honour. These leaders

ANZAC DAY ARRANGEMENTS – COOLAMON and GANMAIN WEDNESDAY 25 APRIL 2018

Coolamon Central School has a strong tradition of supporting the ANZAC day marches in both Coolamon and Ganmain. In recent years we have had over 100 students and 20 staff participate in the March. It is strongly encouraged that ALL students attend the march on Wednesday April 25

as a sign of respect for our soldiers. Students should wear full summer uniform. Those marching in Coolamon are asked to meet Coolamon Central staff and assemble by 10.30am in Loughnan Street. Those planning on marching at the Ganmain Service are asked to meet staff from 10.00am at ‘the Red Cross Rooms’ corner. The main service in Ganmain will commence at 10.30am and will commence in Coolamon at 11am. Look forward to seeing you there, Mr Celi

Congratulations to all students who have engaged with our wellbeing

system this term. Over one third of our students have either reached

Bronze or Silver in the first term! This is a fantastic achievement and

students are encouraged to continue to work hard to achieve for Opal. In

Term 2, the Wellbeing team will run a ‘rewards day’.

I would like to also congratulate and thank all those students participating

in our various Wellbeing programs this term. We have had various

programs to address youth empowerment, health and wellbeing and life

skills activities which have been a tremendous addition to our teaching and

learning. I am excited for Term 2 as we introduce a ‘Rock and Water’

program facilitated by Mr Besgrove.

WELLBEING UPDATE

GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION

On Friday 6th April Stage 5 Students travelled to Lake

Albert to undertake mandatory field work. Students were

given the opportunity to apply their learning in the

classroom to conduct soil and water testing throughout the

day in examining the environmental change and

management strategies around the issues of erosion,

salinity and water quality.

Students tested the water for; Turbidity, Salinity,

Phosphorus and Nitrogen and dissolved oxygen. It was a

great opportunity for students to apply their learning.

ENGLISH - ALPHA Throughout Term 1, 9/10 English Alpha have been exploring texts with multicultural perspectives. They have read poems and short stories by predominate writers, such as Tim Winton and Shaun Tan and have undertaken research on a specific culture to write and create their own picture books about an individual’s cultural experience of ours or another’s country.

Student’s composed their own stories and illustrations. Well done!

BATTERY DRIVE As you service your vehicles and replace your vehicle batteries please consider donating them to the Coolamon Central

School P&C where we can organise for them to be recycled and receive some cash in return. Batteries can be dropped off to the School Ag Plot in Douglas St during school hours - however please give us a quick call to let us know they are there so we can lock them away.

INFANTS BOOK BAGS

Every student in our Infants years has a blue CCS book bag. This bag is used for transporting library books, home readers and notes. Can you please ensure these are brought to school every day and checked every night. Important information regarding your child's learning and wellbeing may otherwise be missed.

STUDENT DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES

Playground supervision does not commence until 8.40am. Students and parent/caregivers are not to be on

school grounds before that time.

Parent/caregivers who are dropping off and picking up students in the morning and afternoon, should not be on

school grounds after 8.55am or before 3pm unless they have signed in to the front office. Parent/caregivers who

are also picking up Secondary students should wait for their child/ren at the front gate of the school.

For the safety of all students at Coolamon Central School all parent/caregivers who visit school grounds at other

times should proceed to the school administration office to sign in.

School Holiday Program

The Youth/School Holiday program is available with lots of fun activities for all to enjoy. Some of the activities

include Youth Fest, Nerf Warz and Archery Tag and Street Art Workshop. Also some of the other workshops are

Children’s cooking workshop, make a butterfly magnet and “Bubble Pop” - Bookings are essential – phone

Storytime

Our next storytime will be Friday 13th April @ 10.30am, theme – “Hocus Pocus”. Come and join us – new families

are most welcomed to attend. Please note storytime will not be held during the school holidays.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The library has a variety of NSW Premiers Reading Challenge books available for students to borrow for those

participating. The books have been sorted into their different levels to make it easy for students. This challenge

aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, phone the library for further details.

The Library will be closed Anzac Day, Wednesday 25th April and re-opening on Thursday, 26

th April.
