By Clementine Smart

Nothing could stop saxophonist, Reuben Chin, from winning the Alex Lindsay Award for young musicians.

The 23-year-old broke his saxophone and had to borrow one to record his submission.

Then technical problems followed him to the concert room where he could only record one of the four pieces he needed for his applica-tion - the rest he taped on his own recording device.

Due to all the issues he, “wasn’t feeling too great about it” he said.Continued on page 2

Snoring is driving me crazy!

“I feel awful! It’s terrible, I just can’t sleep! And it’s getting worse! Night after night, snoring is driving

It was custom made, so it’s very comfortable. We both feel so much better for a good night’s sleep. You

work hard, so you need a good night’s sleep. It’s just like being on our

Continued from page 1Now he has won, he plans to spend the

$3,000 prize money on a new saxophone he has had his eye on since last year.

Chin has been playing the saxophone for 12 years since his intermediate school teacher suggested he take up a serious instrument for high school.

His passion for the saxophone took him to the New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University.

He completed both a Bachelor and Post-graduate Diploma of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Musicology and Chinese.

He hopes to continue his study in the Neth-erlands under distinguished saxophonists, Johan van der Linden and Arno Bornkamp.

He enjoys playing music with other people, and the highlights of his career have been performing with the New Zealand Youth Orchestra in 2010 and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra last year.

Chin says the saxophone isn’t a standard orchestra instrument so he would like to get into chamber music.

“Doing chamber music gigs, maybe saxo-phone quartet or, just small ensemble stuff, that would be sort of the dream.” Chin said.

The other 2015 Alex Lindsay Award winners were, Annabel Drummond for the violin and Alexander McFarlane for the viola.

This is exciting news for Ath-field Architects. Wellington City Council, Victoria Univer-sity of Wellington and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) have decided to award Athfield Architects the op-portunity to develop concept designs to progress ideas for a music hub around Wellington’s Civic Square.

Acting Mayor, Justin Lester, says Athfield Architects will build on its extensive knowledge of Civic Square and surround-ing buildings to come up with the best fi t for the music hub and

civic precinct concept.“Athfield Architects has a

long history with Civic Square having designed the space and Wellington Central Library in the 80s and early 90s. It’s great that they’re involved in the next evolution of the area and I’m excited to see what Athfi elds will come up with,” says Mr Lester.

NZSO Chief Executive Chris-topher Blake added that “The selection of Athfi eld Architects is an important milestone for the music hub project and for the future of the Town Hall.

The NZSO is delighted with the appointment and looks forward to working with the team Ath-fi elds has assembled during the concept design process.”

Athfi eld Architects has been appointed to complete the de-sign phase through to concept stage. It will then be reviewed, including a feasibility analysis, before proceeding to the next stage - ultimately requiring formal approval and sign-off by all three parties later next year.

While Victoria University will be working with Athfi eld Ar-chitects to explore the potential

of this site. “The concept designs will

be pivotal as we explore the feasibility of partnering with Wellington to create a renewed vision of education, music and creative arts excellence for the benefi t of the entire com-munity,” says Victoria’s Pro Vice-Chancellor of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Jennifer Windsor.

The required earthquake strengthening of the Town Hall will be done as an integrated package with the fi t-out of the music facilities.

Residents in the Crawford Green area of Miramar should be on the lookout for any strange behaviour - Plant pots were stolen from a house in the area on two consecutive nights, meaning there must be someone or a group of individuals taking the precious greens.

One local resident was concerned, saying it “wasn’t a one-off” and another resident noticed cigarette butts outside their home. Perhaps a group loitering, on the prowl for more shrubs or flowers especially coming into spring.

Former Wellington Mayor James Belich has died at age 88 after a short battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was surrounded by family at his own home when he passed away on Sunday night.

Belich won the Mayoralty race back in 1986 on the back of a campaign to stop discharging raw sewage into the sea on the south coast.

He held the Mayoral Chains until 1992, and invested heavily in public works including an extension to the Kilbirnie Pools.

Wellington artist Phoebe Mor-ris has illustrated a children’s book about the exploits of Sir Edmund Hillary.

‘First to The Top - Sir Edmund Hillary’s Amazing Everest Ad-venture’ was written by author and journalist, David Hill and published by Penguin.

The book chronicles Sir Ed’s journey from childhood to the top of Mount Everest.

It also explores Sir Ed’s later adventures and his enduring friendship with climbing part-ner, Tenzing Norgay.

After working on the book for over a year Phoebe says she learnt a lot about Sir Ed.

“When I started off, I didn’t know a heck of a lot about him.”

Having researched Sir Ed for the book, she is amazed at how much he managed to fi t into one lifetime.

Sir Ed’s iconic status meant Phoebe was conscious of por-traying him in the right way.

She began by drawing several realistic studies of Sir Ed before she began stylising him for the book.

Because he remains in the living memory of many New Zealanders she was conscious of the need to do him and his story justice.

The book got the go ahead from Sir Ed’s children, Peter and Sarah.

Phoebe says their approval

Sir Ed’s adventures bought to life

was a relief and she was glad they didn’t have an issue with how he had been depicted.

While the book is factual, it is written like an adventure story which Phoebe thinks is

important in keeping children engaged.

“It might be the first time many kids are introduced to Ed and his story, so it's important to make sure it’s a good one,”

she says.Phoebe is about to start work

on a second book commis-sioned by Penguin and will again be working with David Hill.

The honours just keep com-ing for Upstream: Friends of Central Park, which has been named as a runner-up in the Wellington Airport Regional Community awards.

The award – the fourth this year for the group - was presented by Mayor Celia Wade-Brown during their last gathering.

“Upstream very deservedly

got a runner-up in the heritage and environment category,” says Ms Wade-Brown.

“It's great because a lot of the news you hear is pretty dis-heartening. It's good to balance it up with all the good things people are doing.”

The group meets once a month in Central Park to maintain Moturoa Stream Track.

While they mainly plant and weed they also take on building projects and organise com-

munity events.Member Lynne White says

the group has used grants to-wards an art trail.

“We had 12 different artists all build a piece under the theme of shelter. Something else we're doing is pest control.”

This is not the fi rst time the group has received recognition for its work. They have received three other awards in the past year including Community Volunteer Champion Award,

Community Champion Award and Best Visual Arts Award for their inaugural Arts Trail.

“This year we've been really lucky. It's fantastic actually, it’s been really good at reinforcing that what we're doing is actually worthwhile,” says Lynne.

“I'd be interested in a wider group of volunteers, so we have younger people attend.

“It's a fantastic way of getting people together and participat-ing in the community.”

The NZ Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) is ask-ing locals to help with its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal this October. “Give two hours” is the plea from the charity, and they are seeking volunteers to sign up for “just their own two-hour stint on the street, or to rope in friends, workmates

or a community group to cover several hours.”

This year volunteers’ efforts will fund research into new targeted treatments and clini-cal trials, support for women going through breast cancer, medical equipment for our hospitals, and life-saving awareness and education

programmes around the im-portance of mammograms for early detection. “The Pink Ribbon Appeal funds a large chunk of our work, so there’s a direct link between the time people give on the street and our ability to fund research, treatments and education programmes,” says Van Hen-

derson, chief executive of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. “If you can help, please get in touch with us now.”

To volunteer for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal, visit www.pinkribbonvolunteer.co.nz or phone 0508 105 105.

Evans Bay Intermediate School

Evans Bay Intermediate School is buzzing. The EBIS school production is coming up and they invite you to come and enjoy a fun, colourful and amazing night with them.

With an amusing and dramatic script, written by a group of fabulous EBIS students, it will defi nitely be a night to enjoy.

200 years is a long time right? Well imagine if you had to live underground for that long, that’s not a great way to live. In EBIS’s “The Science Affair” the whole of earth’s population is living underground just because a science experiment went terribly wrong and the conditions are getting harsher. Clean air is running out and the authority is ruling with an iron grip and worst of all, SCIENCE IS BANNED!

Six students are secretly creating a rebellious plan with their science teacher. What if the authorities fi nd out? What if they make it out into the world? What will happen if they do?

The School Choir is busy practising and they sound spectacular. Kapa haka, Poly club, a great school Band and of course our fabulous Orchestra all have parts to play and the excitement is building as we get closer to “showtime”.

Sofi a Gowans who plays the Minister of Housing says, “It’s an amazing opportunity for everyone, actors, singers, dancers. Something for everyone to enjoy”.

Ben Egerton, head director and teacher says, “It’s musical, visual, dramatic, spectacular - about survival of humanity. You’d be crazy to miss it.”

“The Science Affair” will be performed at Evans Bay Intermediate on Wednesday 23 September and Thursday 24 September at 7:00pm .

Please come to the Evans Bay Intermediate offi ce to buy tickets.

Adults - $10.00, students - $5:00. (Ph 9393247)

The demolition of St Cuthbert’s Church earlier this month hasn’t dampened the spirit of the church community.

The Reverend of St Cuthbert’s, Richard Noble, says it’s not about the building; it is the people in the community that matter.

“When a family moves home no one thinks the family is destroyed and it is the same with our com-munity, we’ve moved buildings but our church family remains.”

The Berhampore church was sold last year after the August 2013 earthquake left the parish facing the prospect of $250,000- $500,000

in repairs.The church congregation has

moved to the nearby St Thomas’ Chapel on Riddiford Street, after it was decided repairs to St Cuthbert’s would be too costly.

Reverend Noble says he wanted to focus his efforts on building and fostering the community, rather than focusing on fundraising efforts.

“People are our focus, not fund-raising”.

A vote last year on whether or not to sell the church resulted in 30-3 voting for the sale.

The Reverend says that on the whole the response to the move has been positive, despite a few upset parishioners.

Their 10:30am service is now over-filled to the point they are thinking about moving locations again.

They have considered the possibil-ity of a community hall.

Reverend Nobel says it doesn’t matter where they worship.

“The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple, the church is not a resting place, the church is a people.”

The church was sold to a devel-oper who had originally planned to transform the church into four units.

After further engineer reports increased the cost of repairs the plan was scratched and the building demolished.

molished after earthquake damage deemed too costly .

A juvenile Humpback whale is now free after being caught in cray pots and a buoy in Wellington Harbour on Sunday.

The whale was spotted by a fi sherman in Fitzroy Bay, and alerted authorities about the problem.

A specialist Whale Crew from Kaikoura was then dis-patched to help untangle the whale.

The fi sherman who found the whale stayed with it, allowing authorities to fi nd the tangled mammal more easily.

Darlingtons Salon was established nearly 40 years ago in Darlington road, Miramar (hence the name). Chris has run a very successful business which she attributes to having loyal, hard-working staff whom are dedicated to their career and to the salon clientele. All the Stylists are fully qualifi ed in all aspects of hairdressing but each have their own specialist areas. Michelle has been involved with Darlingtons since she was a student at University. She left to do her OE and returned 2 years later to Darlingtons to begin her apprenticeship. She is an asset to the salon and steps up to look after the place when Chris or Danielle aren’t there. Michelle enjoys perming and setting, which she does beautifully, with lovely even curl results. Melissa joined Darlingtons team

about 3 years ago. She had previ-ously been hairdressing in the UK for many years, and specializes in style cutting and creating a whole new look for her clients. She is heading off at the end of the year to have her second baby and enjoy some family time .The Darlingtons team wish her all the best and look forward to her return in 2016.Lynn is has been with the team for

over ten years and is a very valued member of our team. She will happily keep the whole salon humming along whilst working on her own clients. Lynn loves to set hair and has excel-lent backcombing techniques. Danielle, Chris’ daughter has fol-

lowed in her mothers footsteps and been at Darlingtons for nearly a dec-ade. Her young family keep her busy, but she loves coming to work to see all her clients and do what she loves most. She is looking forward to in-creasing her hours in the new year. Danielle excells in foiling and creative colouring techniques, achieving some incredible results.Chris is now only in the salon on a

part-time basis. She is still manag-ing the business but is now spend-ing more time enjoying hobbies and her lovely grandchildren. Chris would like to thank her customers for all their loyalty to the salon, some of whom have been clients for near-ly 40 years.

Darlingtons are stockists of Wella Pro-fessional products, System Professional, and Wella Styling. Also a selection of other boutique ranges.

Mornington Golf Course celebrates 100 years of golf

The Mornington Golf Course will celebrate its 100 year anniversary by showing o a range of sports and stalls to the community.

A 100th birthday party will be held next month for Mornington Golf Course, the only council owned course in Wel-lington.

The annual open day on Saturday, Oc-tober 31 will be a larger event to celebrate 100 years since the course was built.

The course was opened on October 31, 1915 by Wellington City Council, which is reported to have thought golf would be a cheap and easy option to keep people healthy.

The open day will start with a golf tournament to raise funds for the First Tee Junior Values and Life Skills programme.

The programme aims to help teach children valuable life skills and boost their confi dence.

Offi cial celebrations start at 1pm and include all the sports played at the course

like lawn and indoor bowls, a range of golf and Bocce, an Italian form of petanque.

The golf will include junior golf, mens and womens golf and special Olympic golf.

Ray Tuffi n, the president of the Morn-ington Golf Club, hopes the event will bring the community together to give sport a go.

The event will also have stalls includ-ing food and drink, used items and face painting, some of which will be fundraising for the community.

“Our plan is to make this more of a festival type event day and to make this an annual event,” says Mr Tuffi n.

Mornington Golf Club will also have a larger anniversary weekend to celebrate both the start of the course and the club in early 2016.

Construction on the controversial Island Bay cycleway begins on September 28 - and parts of the community are still angry about it.

Fiona Cockerill-Ghanen was one of a group of residents at a community meet-ing last week who approached Cook Strait news about the cycleway

“It’s not about a safe cycle way or they’d be doing it in Berhampore fi rst,” says Ms Cockerill-Ghanen, who is an Island Bay resident against the cycle way.

She and the other local residents believe the council has not listened to what they and the community want and have gone with their own agenda.

They are confused about why this section of the cycle way is being pushed ahead of the Berhampore section, which is far more dangerous.

“The general lack of willingness from the council to listen to what people have to say has been the biggest controversy of it all,” Ms Cockerill-Ghanen says.

The fi nal debate in June divided council-lors and resulted in an eight-six split in favour of the cycleway.

The project will cost $1.5 million and be fi nished early 2016, in time for the annual Island Bay Festival.

The current cycle way, which is between street side parking and the road, will be moved inside the parking so there is a buffer zone between it and the road.

There have been almost no cycling related accidents in Island Bay in the last 10 years but Berhampore is considered a cycleway danger zone.

Councillor Andy Foster says the work is starting at Island Bay because it is the easiest option, and due to the wide roads on the Island Bay parade it is a perfect situation for a cycle way.

“The northern end projects are both part of bigger things like Bus Rapid Transit which are all happening at different times,” he says.

He says they originally wanted to do them all in sequence and from Island Bay to Newtown and Island Bay was a priority from the start.

Mr Foster says the opposition does not represent the whole community’s views.

“The reality is there is no such thing as a community view, there’s a wide variety of views and some support the idea while others do not,” he says.

Regan Dooley, an Island Bay resident and supporter of the cycleway, says the council could have done a better job talking to the community.

“The initial consultation probably wasn't the best but I thought the council quickly learned from that and it got a lot better,” he says.

Mr Dooley also agrees that Berhamp-ore is a more dangerous section to bike through.

“I bike through Berhampore every day on my way to and from work so I agree that cycling conditions need to be improved there,” he says.

The cycleway in Berhampore has not yet begun because of delays due to the chal-lenges presented in Berhampore due to the number of possibilities for a cycle way.

“We are fortunate that because The Parade is nice and wide we can simply swap the position of parked cars and the current bike lanes to separate people rid-ing bikes from motorised traffi c,” he says.

“Protected cycleways are proven to increase the numbers of people biking which then has lots of health, social, environmental and economic benefi ts,” Mr Dooley says.

Tony Kim, Karori

Compared to Christchurch or Auckland it is defi nitely a lot cleaner, with less rubbish hanging around.

Michael O’Neil, Kelburn

It is tidy yes, improvements could be done. However as of now it’s at a good status.

Steven Island, Houghton BayIt is clean compared to third world countries.

Lily Mulhollond, Lyall Bay

More could defi nitely be done, especially on the beaches as I live right next to one. I join in on beach clean ups, as there are many Facebook cleanup events.

Liz Willoughby-Martin, Mount Victoria

Wellington is pretty good about being clean; the council responds really quickly if there is a build-up of rubbish.

Liz Mullane, Miramar

Yes it is a clean city, but there is always more that could be done. I have seen people picking up rubbish from the beaches.

Dear Ed, Re: Noisy Newton Library I am surprised that, in your article about the Newtown Library upgrade, everyone spoke so highly about the air conditioning upgrade. I have been in there several times recently & fi nd that it is extremely noisy, & consequently, couldn’t wait to borrow a book & get out. (Measurement sug-gest around 60dB background, & not under a vent either. For comparison

normal speech is around 65dB & needs to be 20-25dB above back-ground noise for good intelligibility, i.e. people need to talk louder to be understood). It must also be irritating for staff even when well within OSH recommendations. Given that my understanding is a library should be a quiet place (30-40dB background noise), thus allowing people to read undisturbed & talk quietly when

necessary, and additionally, quiet air conditioning systems should be easy to design & implement. My question is to those specifying & designing the new system is: Was noise ever considered because it seems that it was not. Also Is the council going to do anything about it?

Dear Ed, Re your Thumbs Up or Down (CSN Sep. 10) , I must protest at being sniped at anonymously. As I clearly identify myself and the suburb under every published letter, you should insist on the same verifi able ID being published from all correspondents who make personal at-tacks on me or anyone.

I don't mind being abused by anyone who plainly identifies himself/herself; but it's disturbing that so many people now also abuse editors for publishing my letters. Such people obviously don't believe in freedom of expression or democratic rights for anyone who challenges or contradicts their PC heathen views, but only for themselves. They would have just loved the set-up in Nazi Germany or in any Communist regime.

I don't rule out that the item may have been from a friend, tongue-in-cheek. Otherwise, since Socrates was also accused of corrupting young people, perhaps our own authorities won't even wait for my impending natural death, but will soon force me to drink a deadly cup of hemlock instead!

A Newtown man is using his love of the natural world to leave Australian audiences with stars in their eyes.

David Klein, 31, is in Melbourne performing his award-winning science show, Toward a Better Understanding of the Universe.

David will perform six shows in an intimate 30-seat theatre as a part of the city’s Fringe Festival.

The show is an interactive and informal lecture which explains the wonders of the universe, from atoms to galaxies.

David intertwines this with stories of growing up and what he learned along the way.

“When I was 12 I was bullied. But one day I helped one of

those bullies understand some school work, I can’t remember.

Then, another day when a bully started hassling me that guy said, ‘Hey leave him alone, he’s cool’.”

David had often considered becoming a teacher and studied a Bachelor of Science at Canter-bury University.

He works at New Zealand’s fi lm and audio archive, but he channelled his passion for helping others to learn into this show, which he fi rst performed at the Wellington Fringe Festival in February.

He says the idea came to him when he attended the previous year’s festival.

“I saw a few shows in 2014 and thought, I could probably do that.”

David originally performed

three times at a Tory Street arts space but each night they needed extra seats for the overfilled capacity, leading to the addition of two encore shows.

His performance won him ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Wellington Fringe Awards.

David has always been inter-ested in science because “it can answer any question about the world”.

A Melbourne Fringe Festival spokesperson says David’s show will fi t in well with the experi-mental nature of the festival.

“It is such a cool idea, and it is the variety of the shows which makes the festival so great.”

He has plans to tour an adapted version of the show across New Zealand later in the year.

Family works will be of-fering a free programme to separated parents in the Wellington region to ensure their separation is as stress-free as possible for their children.

Parenting through Sepa-ration is an information programme run by Fam-ily Works to help parent’s work out what is best for their children during their separation.

Family Works general manager Julia Hennessy ex-plains how the programme is focused on providing practical advice for parents going through a separation.

“We cover things such as how separation affects children and what parents can do for their children during this time, how to talk to children about separation and ways for separating parents to discuss their chil-dren and make parenting plans,” Hennessy said.

Funded by the Ministry of Justice, the programme was developed by professionals who specialise in helping families through separa-tion and will be delivered by facilitators from Fam-ily Works and Community

Law.Hennessy explains how

the partnership between Family Works and Com-munity Law offers a unique aspect to the programme.

“Having social service professionals from Family Works working alongside legal professionals from Community Law to deliver the programme really adds to the knowledge and in-formation being provided,” she said.

The information is intend-ed to help parents and carers to work out what parenting arrangements will work for their children if or when the parents separate.

“The ea rl ier in your separation you can get to a programme the better for you and your children,” Hennessy said.

Parents and guardians are eligible to attend the programme whether they have recently separated or if they have been separated for some time.

The Programme is being run in Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Wainuiomata from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, December 5. For more information visit www.familyworkscen-tral.org.nz.

A Roseneath refugee advocate says he will keep fighting for New Zealand’s quota to be raised, despite a temporary increase.

Murdoch Stephens, 34, started the ‘Doing Our Bit’ campaign in June 2013 with the goal of doubling New Zealand’s yearly refugee quota from 750 to 1500, as well as doubling resettlement funding.

This month John Key bowed to public pressure and announced New Zealand will take 600 extra Syrian refugees over two and a half years, but Murdoch says this is not enough.

“It’s the absolute minimum the government could offer”.

Doing Our Bit’s Facebook fol-lowers doubled this month to over 7,200 following the outcry over the photograph of Syrian boy Aylan

Kurdi, who was found dead on a Turkish beach.

“It defi nitely struck a nerve with the public.

In the beginning we were fringe radicals, but now our ideas are considered mainstream.”

Even with increased attention Murdoch says the campaign still does not have money for things like fancy banners.

“We are still very much a grass-roots movement.

It would be impossible to keep growing with the momentum of the last few weeks.”

His journey with the issue began while travelling in Iran in 2009.

Murdoch came across an aban-doned refugee detention centre and found over one thousand photos of Afghani refugees.

He began wondering whether his home was doing enough for refu-

gees and learned New Zealand’s quota had not been increased since 1987.

Murdoch returned to New Zea-land in 2010 and in 2013 displayed the photos in an exhibition.

Over the last two years Murdoch has been researching the issue and working with a number of NGOs and politicians to get the message out.

Doing Our Bit now also has a designer and a communications director.

Murdoch says refugees also bring cultural benefi t to the places they are introduced to.

“There is just a fuller atmosphere. Can you imagine what Newtown

would be like without refugees?”The government will reassess the

quota in July 2016 until which time Murdoch will continue to push the campaign.
