The academic dress formatriculated undergraduates ofthe University shall be similar tothe Scholar 's gown of theUniversity of Oxford . It shall beworn whenever the President sodirects .
The gowns of the Bachelors shallbe of black stuff. The gowns of theMasters sha ll be of black stuff orsilk. The gowns of the Doetorsshall be of fine scarlet cloth or silk,or of black stuff or silk.
The pattern of the Bachelor's gownshall be similar to that of theOxford Bachelor 's gown. Thepattern of the Master's gown andthe Doetor 's black gown shall besimilar to that of the OxfordMaster 's gown, except that theDoetor's gown shall have anedging of black silk braid at theopening of the sleeve . TheDoetor's scarlet gown shall besimilar to that of the OxfordDoctor of Divinity' s gown .
The hoods of the Bachelors shallbe made of blackstuff, the hoodsof the Masters of blacksilk, andthe hoods of the Doetors ofscarlet silk. They shall be full inshape and lined with the universitycolours of claret and white . Thehoods of the Bachelors shall betrimmed with white fur, the tippetswith velvet in the coloursdistinetive of the faculty ordegree. The hoods and tippets ofthe Masters shall be edged withve lvet in th e co lo urs dis tinctive ofthe faculty or de gree . The hoodsand tippets of the Doetors shall beedged with silk in the coloursdistinetiveofthefacultyordegree; howeve r, the hood of theDoetor of Philosophy shall be ofc1aretsilk,linedandedgedwithclaret silk.
In June of 1950 Memorial Universityheld its first con vocation , which was afairly simple affair. Led by EngineeringProf. Jack Facey (who would laterperform the role of convocationmarshal fo r 46 years), the studentsand faculty moved from the ParadeStreet campus across to St. Patrick 'sHall School for the conferring ofundergraduate degrees. Theuniversity presented its first graduatedegrees in May 1956 and its firsthonorary deg ree in May 1960.

Story asthe public orator, responsible for thedelivery of the orations about the
:~:;~~rT;~:~~~~~~:t~~:s~i~i~:~~;~honorary degrees were conferred onagalaxyofdignitarieslocal,natio naland int ernat ional. That day the pub licorator and his deputy each had todeliver as many as 10 orations , each aconcise but rhetorically lively accountof the rationale for conferr ing thedegree .
From 1961 to 1968 convoca tion washeld in the gymnasium of the PhysicalEducat ion Build ing. With the openingof the St. John 'sArts and CultureCentre , Memorial in effeetacquired anewconvocationhall,whichbecamethe regular site of the ceremoniesafter 1970. Designed part iallyon theideas of then -Premier JosephSmallwood. the back of the stage withits descending staircase was
