4 Keynote Speaker

Joan GillespieInstructor, MS in Higher Education Administration and Policy, Northwestern University School of Education and Social Policy; Vice President and Director of Off-Campus Study Programs, Associated Colleges of the Midwest (retired)

Joan Gillespie earned a master’s degree in English literature from Northwestern University School of Professional Studies and went on to earn a doctorate in English literature from Northwestern. She is an independent scholar who has held administrative positions in international education for 20-plus years at not-for-profit educational organizations, developing and managing academic programs for Americans studying abroad.

Most recently, she was Vice President and Director of Off-Campus Study Programs at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest, a consortium of 14 liberal arts colleges with headquarters in Chicago. Previously she was Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Assessment at IES Abroad, a consortium of 250-some universities and private colleges. She has worked with university administrators, faculty, and community service providers around the world and witnessed first-hand how academic environments reflect a country’s history and social and economic priorities. In 2010, she returned to Northwestern, to the School of Education and Social Policy, to teach graduate level courses on higher education in the context of globalization.

Much of her research and writing focused on creating quality standards for student learning and development in international settings, and she has published and presented extensively on this topic and participated in developing and evaluating standards on behalf of professional education abroad organizations. Her current research focuses on the impact on faculty who lead and teach on programs of study abroad. She is a co-author and co-editor of Faculty as Global Learners: Opportunities and Strategies to Support Off-Campus Study Leaders at Liberal Arts Colleges, which will be published this summer (2020) by University of Michigan/Lever Press.

She is a lifelong Chicagoan, and Northwestern has played an important part in her family for generations: her grandfather received a law degree from Northwestern; her mother, a master’s degree in music; her brother, a law degree; and her older son, his bachelor’s degree. For years, she and her husband and children lived near the football stadium and baseball field in Evanston and watched the student-athletes practice, cheering them through the season as good neighbors.

6 Alpha Sigma Lambda

Alpha Sigma LambdaFirst in Service and Leadership

In 1946, Rollin Posey, Dean of Continuing Education at Northwestern University, founded the Alpha Sigma Lambda society to honor superior scholarship and leadership within the division of continuing education. It provides a prestigious opportunity to recognize undergraduate students who accomplish academic excellence while balancing the competing interests of family, work and community.

Other schools in the Association of University Evening Colleges accepted Dean Posey’s concept. Northwestern’s society became the Alpha Chapter. Students who have maintained the high level of academic excellence required for Alpha Sigma Lambda membership are eligible to graduate with this prestigious honor.

Alpha Sigma Lambda has continued to grow. It is not only the oldest, but also the largest chapter-based honor society for adult students. Today, there are nearly 300 chartered chapters throughout the United States.

University MottoThe full text of the University motto, adopted on June 17, 1890, is from the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Philippians, chapter 4, verse 8 (King James Version).

Whatsoever things are true,

whatsoever things are honest,

whatsoever things are just,

whatsoever things are pure,

whatsoever things are lovely,

whatsoever things are of good report;

if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise,

think on these things.
