On Monday our class went to the JRC with Miss Connor. We went to make a flower

arrangement. Mr. Fowler’s class came too. Some people came to help us, they came

from Japan! They said “konnichiwa”, which means hello in Japanese. We used recycled

crayons and fresh flowers and materials. When we were finished we had our photo taken,

and it was time to go back to class. I had a lovely day and really enjoyed it! By Reyhan,

Year 2

On Monday our class went to the JRC to learn about

making flowers using recycled materials. Hana Iku came

all the way from Japan and showed us what to do!

First we listened carefully to the instructions and then

we chose our own flowers. Next we decorated our flow-

er base. Finally we took a fantastic photograph, and

then everyone went back to class. I gave my mum and

dad my flower that I created. I felt very happy and

overjoyed!

A farewell party was held in honor of the retiring Mr. Bambang Sutopo, at DRC, Dostour Hall on

Sunday, 30th November 2014, organized by the Badminton fraternity. The Badminton Commit-

tee members and his friends spoke on the occasion.

Mr. Bambang leaves an indelible mark on Dukhan Badminton. Though he was one of the oldest

players in Dukhan, he used to amuse many by being a regular player during the tournaments

as well as at the practice sessions. Determination has always been his strength.

Dukhan Badminton players wished him the very best and a memento was presented to him on

the occasion. Mr. Bambang thanked the Badminton Committee members and Dukhan players

for this fine gesture. A social badminton evening involving most of Dukhan Operations badmin-

ton players and their families too was held on this occasion.

Adios Bambang!!

This week’s tips are for cat owners - by Mrs. J Cloth

1) Most cats keep their own ears clean, but you might have to lend a hand if your

pet is less than diligent in this area. Clean the outer ear gently with a cotton ball

moistened with water or mineral oil.

2) If your cat is fed a high-quality cat food you can skip the vitamin supplements. In

fact, high doses of certain vitamins and minerals can be toxic.

3) The best preventative for a hair ball? Daily grooming. Commercial treatments

are also available - and helpful - as is a simple dab of petroleum jelly, to be

licked and swallowed once or twice a week.

4) Some playthings that are NOT good for your cat: plastic bags, string or thread,

shoelaces, small pieces of foil or plastic, thumb tacks, pins, nails, paper clips.

These items can be swallowed causing severe damage to the intestine and can

require surgical removal.

5) Pine cleaning products can be harmful to your cat, as can any strong cleaning

solution. Make sure you rinse all cleaned items with lots of fresh water. Only use

dish detergent on your cat’s food and water dishes. Make sure you rinse these

thoroughly as well.

Coach’s Claret Jug - Friday 21st November 2014 (Stableford - Mixed)

A very special day for Dukhan golf Club as we said farewell to one of the clubs ex-committee members and one of the clubs longest supporters Alan & Jenny Haggarty. Golfers turned out in numbers in support of this event and all wanted to wish Alan & Jenny well for their future endeavors, what & where ever they may be. The weather was ideal for golf and even the rain waited till the last group was in, so as not to spoil mat-ters. Just for good measure, the day was unique as we witnessed what must be a first for Dukhan, Qatar and maybe the whole region. It’s rarer than a hole in one. I was lucky enough to be marking the card of the golfer involved. The man of the moment Alan Haggarty who drove the par four hole 16th and single putted for an eagle and same again for the par four hole 17 and again single putt. The first back to back eagle ever recorded at Dukhan Golf Course. By the man who is playing his last competition at the club. Ironically he then missed a putt on the eighteen that would have won him the event. His 37 stableford points was one of four cards with the same score, but the double eagles made sure Alan was runner up on count back. The man that spoiled what would have been a complete dream ending for Alan, was none other than the captain himself Raymond Massie who finished with a very good score of 38 stableford points. Well done also goes to Martyn Kilburn for yet another excellent social night golf evening on Thursday evening and again lots of money raised (QR 2,300+) and this time the winners Phil James & Paul Hodg-son elected to distribute the monies collected amongst the assistants and helpers as well as Anton the receptionist. A very good cause indeed.

Also, the Devere Group Financial consultants sponsored nearest the pin on hole four and that was won by Abdulrahim Bin Jaafar. They also sponsored a lucky draw prize for all the golfers that answered a ques-tionnaire. The winner of that draw was a very excited Gill Milne. Well done to all our winners.

Important Notice to all Members Due to the ongoing refurbishment works the club house will be closed from Saturday 6th. December 2014 and until Saturday 10th. January 2015.

The Golf course will remain open and competition will continue as per advertised schedule, but there will be no food after the game. There will be minimum temporary facilities available and the notice board will be displayed temporarily in one of the rooms adjacent to the practice brown. Accordingly, Green fees will be reduced to QR 20, as a way of compensation for the unavoidable disruption caused.

Biotechnology Explorer at

Carnegie Mellon University

B y G r a h a m S t a r k e y

Three students from DES, Yamam Al Srour

(yr 13), Talha (yr 12) and Abel Thomas (yr

11), were picked by Carnegie Mellon

University to attend their Biotechnology

Explorer program on November 15th.

They spent a whole day investigating how

different drugs, such as caffeine and

serotonin, affected the activity of nerve cells

in a living earthworm. They used small

electrodes to stimulate the nerves followed

by an injection of the drugs into the

earthworm. They could then follow the re-

sultant nerve impulses using computer

software. The results can be used as a

model to determine how human nerves

work.

They worked in mixed groups with 18 other

students from eight different Doha schools.

At the end each group had to deliver a

report about their findings.

I believe this occasion gave the students

enjoyable and realistic practical experience

but also provided them with the knowledge

that Biology as a subject opens the door to

many different careers not only medicine.

The students also had the chance to

acquaint themselves with many new friends

especially the earthworms who all lived for

another day.

They all were a credit to the school and their

families.

The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra visit Dukhan

A couple of weeks ago Year Six and The Music De-

partment worked together to organise a trip to

hear the Qatar Philharmonic perform Prokofiev’s Peter

and the Wolf (with the story reimagined in Qatar as

Khalid and the Wolf) at the opera House at Katara

Cultural Village. A week before the visit two members

of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra Publicity

Team, Dr Bruce Robinson and Mr. Khalid Al Naemi,

came into the school to talk to the children and invite

them to create art work to be projected above the

orchestra during the performance. In the end all

of the pupils work was used during the performance

and afterwards, as a gesture of appreciation,

Dr Bruce Robinson talking to Year 6 about Khalid and the Wolf.

Robotics Club trip to Sochi, Russia for the World Robotic Olympiad 2014

O n the 19 th to 24 th November 2014, a robotics team from

Dukhan English School represented Qatar at the World

Robotic Olympiad 2014 in Sochi, Russia. This is a

competition that touches science, technology and education

spheres and unites the young people from all corners of the

planet. It helps them to develop their solve problem skills,

creativity and education level in different subjects, such as

science, mathematics and many other.

The trip to Russia has been a new experience for both of us

and has taught us new ways to improve on our designs. Sochi

is a wonderful place to visit if you can get past the climate,

which is freezing! The hotel that we stayed at had really good

service and the people there are helpful. The food there was

also excellent and we really enjoyed our stay in Sochi. The

vastly more experienced than the Qatar team who are just

starting out in Gen II Football. We have looked at other stu-

dents designs such as the different kickers.

Next year the World Competition will be held in Qatar, organ-

ised by the College of North Atlantic. We will be starting

preparing for this event as soon as we get back to Qatar.
