Masthead: The masthead of the page is arranged on the right-third section of

the page. It is broken up to three sections so that it doesn’t cover any part of the

left-third side. The model in the main image looks as if it is interfering with the

masthead, which makes it look very realistic, because her leg is stretched up so

that her feet cover part of the title. It almost looks like she is holding the

masthead up balanced on her feet. The font style of the masthead is very plain

and bold, the colour of it is also extremely plain, and this gives us the idea of a

very classy look.

Main Image: The main image is the most attractive and important part of the

photo, as it is made to be the biggest thing on the page. The way the model

is posing is also another aspect of attractiveness; her legs are the most

explicit features of her whole body. The costume she has got on matches the

colour of the masthead and the flooring she is laying on, it is a very f faint

grey colour. Her dark skin colour contrasts very well with her bright clothing

and the background.

Arrangement: The arrangement of the different sections on the page

represents how important each thing is. For example the model in the main

image is seen to be the most important and attractive thing on the mage as it

takes up the biggest section of the page. On the other hand, the cover lines

take up the smallest sections, which are predicted to be the less important

information. The face of the model, masthead and cover lines take up all of

the right-half of the page, which is the most important side. The reason for this

is because as soon as the magazine is opened, the first things they see will

be on the right-hand side.

Cover lines: The cover lines of certain stories in the magazine are laid out so

that the heading is bold and clear whereas the summary is tiny and very simple.

The page number is designed so that it is bold as well as the headings. The

colours black and grey are used in the cover lines which successfully match the

colour scheme used. The font styles of the headings are italic and very stylish as

it is mainly talking about fashion. The summaries however are very simple font

faces. Each summary contains at least one bolded word.

Colour Scheme: The colour co-ordination on this page is very clear. They are

shades of black, white and grey. These colours always bring to mind a classy

style. They are not very girly and not very manly. The colours are very unisex,

they appeal to boys as well as girls. The costume of the model in the main image

matches the colours of the masthead and the cover lines. Her shoes also match

the colour co-ordination.

Textures: We can see very faint lining textures on the page in certain places. The

‘V’ shaped lining texture on the left-third section of the page mimics the position

of the models legs.

Overall Impression: The overall impression that the page gives is very classy

and plain. It mainly appeals to a target market age of women middle aged and

under. However the ‘sexy’ models used in the magazine have a high chance of

attracting men to buying the magazine and looking at the pictures only instead of

reading the stories within it which do not really cover their interests. There is a

successful colour scheme on the pages which links the masthead, main images

and cover lines successfully together. The model in the main image gives a

positive impression to the target audiences of the magazine; women who buy it

may see the model as an idol and want to be like her, whereas on the other

hand men would dream of her as their ideal partner.

Incorporating the magazine logo into the background works in promoting the brand identity, helping

to tie all the elements on the page together. It fills a large gap in the page, without being

overwhelming.

The model is pictured topless showing his tattoos he is wearing

a variety of ‘bling’ pieces of jewellery, and a baseball cap spun

around backwards. All these elements promote youth culture and

wealth. The shrunken head around his neck suggests death or a

freakish cult. The figure itself portrays anger, it is not designed to

be an appealing image, rather one of breaking social constraints,

represented by the pulling off the jewellery. The image bleeds off

the page.

The unusual layout of the word ‘contents’ suggests individuality

from other magazines, and possibly connoting the individuality of

the genre of music that VIBE covers.

The column inch on the left has a simple layout separated into

two categories for ease for reading. The category headings are

written in a font with formal serif. Overall the layout is fairly

balanced heavily orientated towards the main image with all other

elements being placed in accordance to this picture, possibly

connoting the idea that the artists are the main focus of VIBE.

Colours – the colour of the background is a dark red/burgundy

colour this could be connoting deep passion it also acts as a nice

complimenting colour to the artist’s skin tone. Sometimes when

red is used it can be used to symbolise love and happiness.

However this red is darker and also it links to the image as it

being danger. The white font colour choice is a good contrast, and

creates a modern, contemporary feel. The colour white has been

used well because having a dark background the white text now

seems more vibrant and easier on the eye.

Conventions- conventions used for this contents page is

jewellery. He is wearing many chains. Many hip-hop artists wear

lots of chain to show there more urban style and it shows the

background they came from. Also having the gold teeth is also a

convention for hip-hop artists along with silver teeth.

Representation of model- the image is of a rapper called

Plies. He is trying to send a message to the audience that he

is from the ‘hood’ and this is the way they live. Most rappers

are raised in rough areas and they are proud of this, so they

like to show the world how they lived and how they are now.

Being topless also shows the body and strength of the man.

Target audience- the target audience for this magazine would be males. Due to some of the body being shown, the way he is standing and the colours, it would only

appeal

Masthead-

The masthead of the page is arranged on the left-third section of the page.

The font style is very stylish and bold italic; it is placed landscape ways almost

like a side banner. The colour of the text is faint red. It looks very girly and

appeals to mainly teenage ones as the writing does not look very classy to

meet the expectations of a women. There are no other texts surrounding the

masthead, which makes it look very plain.

Pug-

There is a small pug on the bottom left hand side of the page as we can clearly

see it is in the shape of a circle, it is slightly transparent as it is placed over

part of the model in the main image. The pug contains a quote and it is

arranged within the circle. The colours used in the text are a faint black and the

red colour which matches the masthead. The colour of the actual pug is white

which is very plain and classic.

Date/Website-

The date and website are implicitly displayed at the bottom left hand corner of

the page, right next to the page number. Next to the date and website there is

a small phrase which reads ‘please recycle the magazine’ this shows that the

producers of the magazine actually think about the environment and have

made room on such an important page to warn the readers.

Banner-

There is a thin banner at the bottom which is coloured in a colour which does

not match the colour co-ordination. However it follows the colour scheme of

opposing colours, we can identify that the faint red and blue are opposing

colours.

Colour Scheme-

The main colour scheme used on the page is pink/red, light blue, white and

black. The white colour matches the top and the belt of the model in the main

image which is very successful. This shows that there is a link between the

information on the page and the person in the main image. The most effective

colour used is the pink/red colour as it is the colour of the masthead and the

page numbers, which are the most important things.

Main Image-

The main image is a medium close up of a rather attractive women, preferably a

teenage girl who looks very mature. She is centred on the page and is looking

very serious. She is used because she has the features that appeal to many

teenage girls and boys. Teenage girls get appealed to seeing her as an idol to

them however teenage boys may think of her as an ideal girlfriend. The top she

is wearing and the belt matches nicely with the plain background she is in, they

are both very faint light pink. The way she is dressed appeals to teenage girls

and isn’t a fashion type a middle aged women would follow. The image is

arranged so that it is behind everything else on the page.

Side Banner/ Cover lines-

The cover lines are combined within the side banner on the right-third section of the page. The banner has got its very own masthead, which is not as bold and stylish as the contents masthead but instead is very thin and plain with no fancy look. However the other heading

in the banner is black in bold italics, this emphasises on the fact that the section is about fashion and how teenage girls ‘look’ like. The sub headings all have a page number before them and the summaries are in plain white text.

Title: The title of the page is arranged on the left-third section of the page.

The font style is very plain and classic; it is placed next to the logo of the

name of the magazine ‘Q’. The logo is red and white, where the title is just

plain white on a black skyline background. There is a second title on the

page which is slightly smaller than the first one and is further down the

page; this shows that it is less important than the main title.

Cover lines: There are two main cover lines on this page along with all the

other ones. The fonts of all of the cover lines are plain and match the font

style of the masthead. The subheadings of each cover line are designed in

capital letters, along with a simple straight font. The numbers at the

beginning of the subheadings are colour in red so that they stand out and

that it matches the magazine logo. The summaries are extremely small

and faint; it matches the colour of the subheadings.

Arrangement: The arrangement of the different sections on the page

represents how important each thing is. For example the models in the

main image are seen to be the most important and attractive things on

the page as they take up the biggest section. On the other hand, the

cover lines take up the smallest sections, which are predicted to be the

less important information. They are also on the left0third section of the

page which is the less important side. The main image is more on the

right had side which emphasises on the importance.

Main Image: The main image looks more like a snapshot rather than an

artistic photo. This is because it is not a photo that has been taken in a

photo studio, and looks very random. It is almost like a photographer has

come over out of no where and asked for a simple pose. This photo gives

the page a very natural and realistic look compared to other magazine

photo shoot photos where a studio has been used. The models’ have not

been cut around or played about on Photoshop, instead it is a simple

standard portrait shape photos which has been placed on the right side of

the page.

Colour Scheme: There is not a set colour scheme to this page because

the firstly the main image looks very busy and colourful, so there is so

many colour to look out for. Apart from that the colour co-ordination used

consists of black white and red. Shades of grey are also present here

and there on the page. The busy look on the page with the use of colours

emphasises on the un-classy look of it.

Overall the page looks very busy. The busy look that the page has gives

it a very un-classy impression. The busy look includes the main image,

where the models are not in a plain background but are in a place where

the background is very busy, almost like a mountain top looking down on

all the buildings. All the busy cover line text and summaries add to this

un-classy impression. The page appeals mainly to rock lovers, as the

models in the photo are members of a rock band, we can identify this

rock feeling from the hairstyles the models’ have.
