As November approaches, we know that our Auxilians are hard at work making preparations for the annual Holiday Bazaar. The Bazaar is one of our community traditions in Saline County, and we know many of our families look forward to attending. We continue to be thankful for all of your efforts in advocating for our hospital in the community. There are two important announcements that we would like to share with you this month. First, after three years of dedicated hard work and diligence

by our staff, Fitzgibbon Hospital, all of our clinics, and The Living Center will “Go-Live” with Cerner as our new Electronic Health Record (EHR) on Monday, November 6. This new EHR will allow us to combine eight disparate systems we are currently utilizing throughout our organization. It will add many advantages including additional safety measures in patient care. With a project of this magnitude, it will, however, take some time before we reach the efficiencies we desire. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to make ourselves better equipped in taking care of our patients. The second important announcement is the arrival of Dr. Steve Hong and his family. Dr. Hong is a board-certified OB-GYN and a personal long-time friend of mine. He is a person of tremendous character, and I believe you will see this in how he takes care of patients and how he treats people in general. Dr. Hong provides a full array of obstetrical and gynecological care that impacts the quality of life for women in our community. It is my hope that you will welcome him and his wife, Marcy, and daughter, Astin (6), and son, Rhys (15 months), to our community. He is a wonderful addition to our staff at Marshall Women’s Care with Dr. Karen Song and nurse midwives, Deanna Donnell and Megan Shepard. As always, thank you for all that you do to support our hospital. Your work truly impacts thousands of Saline County and surrounding area residents as you help us to ensure we meet our mission of improving the health of the communities we serve.

and service calls. We also thank Exchange Bank of Marshall for their generous sponsorship of this package. Great meals are sure to be served if you win this raffle package.

Who wouldn’t enjoy a night out with friends after a busy work week or appreciate a break from the holiday rush? Raffle #3 is the WINE, DINE, & RIDE IN STYLE package. The winner of this prize will enjoy four dinners for four diners at four fabulous area restaurants donated by the proprietors at each establishment – Catalpa’s in Arrow Rock, Beckett’s Restaurant located in Glasgow, Iron Horse Restaurant in Blackwater, and Stone Hedge Golf Club in Marshall. In addition to the dinners, the winner’s party will enjoy the wine-tasting experience at Bushwhacker Bend Winery in Glasgow prior to dining at Beckett’s. Enjoy a limousine ride to one restaurant of your choice graciously donated by Grandiose Limousine of Marshall. All Gratuities for this raffle prize are included. What a wonderful treat for your family or friends!

Are you ready for some shopping? Raffle #4 is a fabulous raffle -- CASH AND CARATS -- so appealing! Through the generosity of the Community Bank of Marshall and Sturhahn Jewelers, you will receive $500 in cash and a $500 gift certificate to Sturhahn Jewelers. What a great time to have extra cash and a

Sturhahn’s gift certificate to find that special someone a spectacular gift or use it as a bonus for yourself! There are so many avenues of choice that are available for you in this prize package.

The Holidays are approaching quickly and who couldn’t use an extra $1,000 in cash to do with whatever they wish? STASH of CA$H is the #5 Raffle ticket that can be purchased from the Fitzgibbon Hospital Auxiliary. The lucky winner of this prize will only have to decide how they want to use their winnings! This Raffle is sponsored by the generosity of Wood & Huston Bank and Central Missouri Agri Service, LLC.

Drawings will be held the night of the Bazaar, and you do not need to be present to win!

Tickets are on sale now through the evening of the Bazaar on November 10th. Now is the time to buy your tickets for all five raffles! Mix and match your raffles or select the one raffle package that appeals to you the most. Don’t miss your chance to win one of these fabulous prizes!

Dear Members,

I hope you had a great summer! The leaves are changing, the nights are cooler, and the hint of Holiday Bazaar is in the air! Doesn’t it seem the calendar sheets turn faster every year?

This is the 51st year for the Holiday Bazaar, and it is our biggest fundraiser. Many willing hands are needed to keep this community tradition alive and robust, so I hope you will say, “Yes” when asked to man a station, bake a pie, prepare some yummies for the bake sale, sell tickets, or help in the many worthwhile roles our volunteers play in the bazaar’s success.

A large chunk of the Holiday Bazaar’s profit comes from raffle ticket sales. If, after reading about the fantastic raffles offered this year, you would be willing to take a packet of tickets to sell, please contact Melisa at 631-3020.

Please share our newsletter with your friends and neighbors and encourage them to join our auxiliary. Be sure to bring a friend to SHOP and EAT, too!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the

good work Fitzgibbon Auxiliary Ambassadors do

throughout the year. You make our community a

better place.

Dr. Hong also was recognized as an AUPHA & Abbott Fellow for Outstanding Academic and Leadership Achievement in Healthcare Administration, one of only 10 recognized nationally. He is a decorated U.S. Army Veteran, having received the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation medal for his work in the 86

th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq.

“Dr. Hong is a wonderful addition to our women’s care team of Dr. Karen Song and nurse midwives Deanna Donnell and Megan Shepard. Not only does he have significant education and experience, you will find him to be a friend and a compassionate physician who is dedicated to patient-centered care. He has a very kind spirit and is a loving husband and father. We are so very fortunate that he has decided to move here and care for the women of our community,” said Darin Haug, D.O., President and CEO of Fitzgibbon Hospital. “Steve and his wife, Marcy, are excited to get involved and be active in our community.” “Providing excellent health care to women in all phases of their lives is very important to me. I am dedicated to assisting patients make the most informed decisions regarding their medical care, and I understand that the patient is the most important person in any health care environment,” said Dr. Hong. “I have spent most of my career in the Midwest, and I look forward to being a valuable resource in the medical community at Fitzgibbon Hospital and in Marshall and the surrounding area,” said Hong. When he is not working, Dr. Hong enjoys spending his free time with his family — his wife, Marcy, seven-year-old daughter, Astin, and 15-month-old son, Rhys. He also enjoys fishing, golfing and watching football.

Mary Montgomery Hospice Annual Holiday Basket Project

G rief and loss is a part of all our lives. The staff of Fitzgibbon Mary Montgomery Hospice recognizes how holidays can magnify the loss for those who have recently lost a loved one. Family and togetherness is what the holidays

are all about. The first set of holidays can be especially painful. The sadness feels sadder and the loneliness goes deeper. Many families have traditions related to the holidays, which can be heavily impacted by the loss. Our hospice team has chosen to support grieving families with a simple, but very meaningful gesture—the holiday basket. Our staff, along with hospice volunteers and Fitzgibbon Auxiliary, create baskets of “goodies” to deliver to families that have lost a loved one during the prior year. Written resources about grief and holidays are included with the basket. At delivery time, staff check-in with families with words of encouragement and support. The baskets are typically met with a few tears, but also heartfelt thanks for having their grief acknowledged at such a hard time. Food items typically included in the baskets are prepackaged items such as popcorn, hot chocolate, cookies, Chex mix, flavored crackers (Cheez-It, etc.), flavored teas, breakfast bars, trail mix, soup mixes or any home baked goods packaged in zip lock bags. Fitzgibbon Auxiliary members help provide the goodies for the baskets. If you would like to help, items may be delivered to the Gift Shop or Auxiliary Office the first part of November. If you have questions or would like to help with the assembly of the basket, please call the Hospice office 886-7431 ext. 293 or 831-3316.

Helping Hands helping Patients in Need

When the Fitzgibbon Helping Hands Committee recently identified a need for personal hygiene and food items that could be given to patients in need when they are dismissed from the hospital or after a doctor's appointment, the Keep It Kind 65340 volunteers came to the rescue. The group of volunteers helped stuff 100 “We Care” bags. These bags will save our staff time by eliminating the need to go to Walmart or Aldi’s to purchase items as they are needed. Angela Igo (Chief Nursing Officer), Jean Tumlinson (Dietary) and Karissa Bishop (Materials Management) worked together to develop the list of contents (pictured below), which were paid for by the Helping Hands Fund.

Auxiliary Efforts multiplied through New Treatment Program

F undraising by the Auxiliary Ambassadors allows us to sponsor staff members’ continuing education by

paying their registration fees for workshops, classes, and certification training. The reports from staff who attend help us appreciate the vital role our auxiliary efforts play in the health of our community. Jennifer Dickinson, PT, DPT, Physical Therapist at Fitzgibbon, recently reported to the board after attending a second course in Pelvic Floor Therapy, for which our Auxiliary paid the registration fees. “Honestly, the day after I returned from my course, I used something I learned in the course with every one of my patients,” said Dickinson Pelvic floor physical therapy is a new service offered at Fitzgibbon Rehab, which treats individuals with multiple issues related to bowel, bladder, and intimacy. This includes accidental leakage of urine when

coughing, sneezing, or laughing or an inability to control bowel or bladder when trying to get to the restroom. Pelvic floor issues can also include a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying or difficulty starting or maintaining a urine stream. Pelvic pain during intercourse, bowel movements, or at rest is also common, but not normal. These issues can be addressed with pelvic floor PT as well. Treatment can also include managing pelvic pressure, a feeling of heaviness or falling out, and pregnancy or post-partum related issues, including back pain, diastasis recti and sciatica. Dickinson explained how our investment in the Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy program has helped the hospital, as well as individual patients. “I want to thank the Auxiliary for the growth in our Pelvic Floor PT service. I have had 225 therapy visits since the program began, and that has generated over $20,000 for the hospital. The money you invested in my continuing education has been reinvested tenfold,” said Dickinson Congratulations, Auxilians, on a job well done!

Jennifer Dickinson Physical Therapist

Keep It Kind 65340 is a group of women of all ages who come together to make friends, spread kindness through the community and also provide service to the community when appropriate. Keep It Kind 65340 is a continuation of the Kind Campaign that came to Marshall this year with their powerful program about kindness.

shirt sales, planning for the Holiday Bazaar booth, and preparations for Christmas. It’s a busy, but rewarding time.

We thought it would be hard to surpass the in-credible results of the 2016 shop-ping event, The Great Purse Re-veal, but we did – by a whopping $6.14! The six-day sale featured our fall fashions and décor, and The Gift Shop was bustling with shoppers eager to see the new trends in purses, jewelry, wraps, and more. Thank you to all the vol-unteers who

Thank You Thursday Cookies are a Big Hit!

A big THANK YOU to all the bakers who brought cookies to give to our hard- working staff on “Thank You Thursdays!” The entire Fitzgibbon staff is involved in planning, implementing, teaching, and learning the conversion to the Cerner operating system. They are VERY appreciative of the support and encouragement those cookies represent as they add learning a new system to their duties.

worked so hard to keep the shop looking nice while helping our customers find their favorites. New team items include KC Chiefs soup tureens, beer/popcorn buckets for the Chiefs, Mizzou, and Roy-als fans, MU bluetooth garden speakers, Mizzou wine and pilsner glasses, team jewelry, flags, ornaments, clear purses, and even team fishing lures! Come see our great section of team gear! We are excited to reveal beautiful and fun Christmas decorations at the Holiday Bazaar. The items will be available in the shop beginning Monday, November 13. Warmies are returning to The Gift Shop this season. Warmies are house boots and stuffed animals that become warm and fragrant with a hint of lavender when warmed in a microwave – perfect for those chilly eve-nings ahead. Two book sets we are offering would make terrific gifts for children. Oliver, the Ornament, is a boxed set that includes a book and an ornament and tells the story of an ornament that is bul-lied by the other ornaments into thinking the family doesn’t want him on their tree because he is broken. Kindness works its magic, and the story ends by encouraging children to ask their par-ents about the stories of the ornaments on their families’ trees. It even includes pages for the ornaments’ stories to be recorded in the book. The Giving Manger is a book set that helps a family focus on giving. It includes a heartwarming story to ex-plain the tradition, a wooden manger, pieces of straw that are placed in the manger after each act of service and compassion, and a baby Jesus. Only when the manger is prepared through acts of kindness is the baby Jesus placed in the manger. We have a fantastic group of volunteers who keep The Gift Shop running smoothly! In the last few months, five new volunteers have accepted shifts in The Gift Shop. Volunteers graciously trade shifts, so there can be flexi-bility to accommodate changes in plans and appoint-ments. If you are interested in working a 3 hour shift once each month, please call the office at 886-7431 ext. 667. When a shift becomes available, we’ll give you a call to see if that shift will work with your schedule.

Warmies are microwavable stuffed

animals and house shoes that will warm those cool

days ahead.

O nce again, we have a great group of women that have answered the call to chair the different areas of the

Bazaar. This year’s team includes Marty Webster, Barbara Pennock, Brenda Coffman, Jacque Hare, Sherry Shannon, Bonnie Faris, Bethany Kreisel, Virginia Bryant, Gloria Fetter, Linda Clark, Suzie Stallings, Jessie Oxford, and Donna Whyte. These ladies are working on getting a team of auxiliary volunteers ready for another successful Bazaar. If you would be available to help on November 10, please contact the auxiliary office, and we can make sure you are helping in an area that you enjoy.

We are, also, very grateful to the Fitzgibbon Hospital staff. They contribute so much to the success of the Bazaar. Cindy Eagle, Richard DeFord, Jackie Finnegan, Jean Tumlinson and the great Dietary staff, and the Maintenance and Housekeeping staff are just a few of the many hospital employees who are vital to this great event and all of the Auxiliary endeavors. The hospital staff is always supportive and ready to provide help and contribute so much to make the Auxiliary a vital part of the FITGIBBON TEAM.
