NewsSplit–AnewhostelinthetownofDiocletian‘Golly & Bossy’ is the new hotel in Split that has recently accepted its first guests. This design hostel with an unusual, amusing and ironic name (naked and barefoot) is situated in the neo-classicist building which used to be a shopping centre, in the centre of the city on Morpurgova poljana. The hostel is full of modern and interesting designer solutions and completely technically equipped. It has 28 rooms with 138 beds all together. On the first and second floor there are rooms with four and six beds, while on the third floor there are hotel type double rooms. Every room is equipped with a shower, a lavatory and free internet access. An attractive view stretches from the balcony onto the historical core of Split and at the front of the building there is a big terrace. The rooms are numbered in an unusual way. Every number represents a year from history that was important for Split. For example, on the floor in front of room 1221 it is written that this was the year pirates had attacked Split, while room number 2010 signifies the year the hostel opened its doors. Besides the new hostel in the centre of Split, a few smaller family hotels were opened and it is expected that the projects Marjan Hilton, hotel Central and Villa Matić will be completed next year. Renovation of the hotels Bellevue and Ambasador is being planned, as is the building of a new hotel not far from the famous beach Bačvice in Split.

The family farming estate Jurković in Zmajevac (Baranja), named Kod Buljbe (At Buljba’s), is the first in the area of Slavonija and Baranja that offers guests the always popular sporting- tourist activity – golfing.Although an 18-hole golf course has not yet been built they do offer a practice area, a golf school and a golf club. The plan is to build a golf course and a small hotel. The owner explains his unusual entrepreneurial idea as a wish to enrich the traditional offer of Baranja which is mostly made up of wine cellars, restaurants and fiš-paprikaš (a traditional fish stew). The estate Kod Buljbe is a resort that stretches on a surface larger than eight acres and is intended for individual, family and group sports activities. It has a restaurant, a children`s playground and a lake which are all located in the beautiful surroundings of the Belje vineyards, fruit orchards and gardens. The restaurant offers only autochthonous dishes – čobanac (shepherd`s stew), bean stew from a jug, fresh-water fish and, in the winter, pork or veal shank, sarma (sour cabbage filed with mince meat) and sekeli goulash (sauerkraut stew). Also on offer are dishes baked in ‘peka’ (a domed clay or metal pot placed in an open hearth and heaped with hot coals) as well as ribs baked in a clay-oven. Zmajevac is a place famous for its vineyards, wine roads and numerous wine cellars dug into the south side of the Baranja mount. Zmajevac emerged out of the Roman colony Ad Novas and is first mentioned in historical documents in 1302 when the Pavlin monastery was reinstated.

PlitviceLakes–Besidesthelakes, thePlitviceforestsbecomepartofthetouristofferThe National Park Plitvice Lakes, which has been included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage since 1979, is widely known for its sixteen cascading lakes and waterfalls but, since recently, visitors can get to know the beauty and richness of the Plitvice forests as well. With the aim of bringing the forest eco system closer and promoting the natural values of the park, two educational recreation trails have been opened to visitors – the 9 km long ‘Plitvica’ and the 21 km long ‘Čorkova Uvala’. The trails are mainly of an educational character but because of their length and configuration they can also be used for recreation purposes. With the help of qualified guides and informative-educational (theme) boards that have been put up along the two paths, visitors are offered the possibility of getting to know the richness of the biological diversity of the park. The paths are marked with mountaineering sign posts and arrows and must be strictly followed, as well as following the code of conduct.

The oldest Croatian royal town Nin is one of this year`s 25 ‘European Destinations of Excellence’ which were recently awarded a prize in Brussels at the European Day of Tourism.Competing this year were tourist destinations located near waters where nature is respected and where the eco system is being preserved for upcoming generations.Preservation of historical monuments, traditional values and the cultural offer were all taken into consideration in the grading process.Nin won the prize in Brussels by beating Fužine, Ilok, Karlovac and the island Krpanj on a national level, which were all in the last round of the competition.Nin is located on a small island, surrounded by clear seas, in the embrace of long sandy beaches, out of which the most interesting one is the ‘Queen`s beach’, 1.5 km long with healing mud - peloid - which cures many diseases.Plans for the building of a health tourism centre are being drafted for this particular location. Here we have the endemic flora and fauna; the famous Nin salt-pan; the rich cultural heritage : the baptistery of Prince Višeslav, the remains of St. Anselmo`s cathedral, the church of the Holy Cross, the church of St. Nicholas and St. Ambros from the Middle Ages, the remains of sunken ships (Condura Croatica), the Baroque house, the Antic Villa Urbana with mosaics, the remains of the city walls, the Roman temple, the Nin antiques museum and the treasury of the parish church. With the goal of creating a European network of the most beautiful places with sustainable tourism outside of the usual tourist paths, the EU started a project in 2005 called EDEN, which chooses European destinations of excellence, in which Croatia competes as a candidate, shoulder to shoulder with other EU members.

Nin–AroyaltowngetstheEuropeanAwardforExcellence

The first national winner of EDEN, under the theme ‘A Tourist Destination in a Rural Area’ was St. Martin na Muri, then Đurđevac – the town of ‘Picok’ (transl. chicken, relating to the legend about Đurđevac) on the theme ‘Tourism and the Local Non-Material Heritage’, while last year`s winner on the theme ‘Tourism and Protected Areas’ was the National park Sjeverni Velebit (North Velebit).

The new architectural project Bili dvori in the small fishing village Lovište on Pelješac could become the new address of the world`s rich. Bili dvori will be a tourist resort made up of villas, apartments, flats, a six-star boutique hotel with around 70 rooms, a marina with 120 berths, tennis courts, restaurants, bars, a spa and wellness centre, making luxury the common characteristic of all the contents which would spread across six acres. The location of Bili dvori is a site where the building of an apartment resort began in the late 80`s and the planned realization of the project is three years. The investment worth 70 million euros will be organised as a joint venture between a Croatian company and a foreign investor. The project would bring the area to life, creating at least 200 new work places as there is a great need there for local food products and facilities.Pelješac is the second largest peninsula on the Adriatic coast after Istria. From the Ston isthmus to the cape of Lovište in the northwest, it is 65 km long.It is located in the south of Dalmatia and some of the larger and more known tourist destinations are Ston, Brijest, Trpanj, Viganj and Orebić.Along with its rich cultural and historical heritage, Pelješac is well known for its fine red wines from Dingač and Postup and a wide selection of shells from the Mali Ston bay. The mountain parts are well known as mouflon hunting grounds; for an active mountain climbing holiday there are the mounts Sveti Ivan and Sveti Ilija; Viganj is ideal for surfing while the western part of the peninsula has hiking and biking trails.

The first Croatian amusement park should be erected in Biograd na Moru. It will spread across an area of around five acres above the well known Biograd tourist resort Crvena Luka. The investor plans to begin works next year and the total value of this investment is estimated between 15 and 20 million euros. The plan is to build an amusement park which will focus on day-time fun, following the example of the Italian Gardaland, while night time entertainment would also not be neglected.Daytime contents of the future amusement park will include adrenalin filled fun such as roller coasters (slides), restaurants, cafes and a building with a tunnel aquarium in which the fish from the Adriatic Sea would swim above visitor’s heads. The night time contents (a night club, a large disco and a casino) would be separated from the daytime ones and would have a separate entrance. The location, the infrastructure and the closeness of the three Croatian national parks (Paklenica, Kornati and Krka) and nature parks Telaščica and Vransko Lake, which is the largest in Croatia, should all contribute to the overall attractiveness of the amusement park.Biograd should also become the first Dalmatian town with a golf course, which would place it, together with the amusement park, among the most attractive tourist destinations on the Adriatic.Biograd na moru is located in north Dalmatia, around 30 km south of Zadar. It partly rests on a small peninsula and partly on land and in front of it are the islands Planac and Sveta Katarina. Biograd is a ferry port for the island Pašman and the centre of the Riviera that includes the places: Sveti Petar na moru, Turanj, Sveti Filip and Jakov, Biograd, Pakoštane, Draga and more villages on the island Pašman.Once the coronation city of Croatian kings, Biograd is today a compulsory port for sailors whose destination is the Kornati archipelago.Regatas, sailing schools and other nautical activities are available throughout the year. Biograd marinas have 1000 berths in the sea and 200 places on land which are always open.

Biogradnamoru–AnamusementparkaboveCrvenaLuka

Thanks to its location on the most indented part of the Adriatic coast, this area offers more excellent possibilities for nautical tourism and sailing than a lot of places on the Mediterranean.Apart from its cultural and historical heritage, Biograd is known for its beautiful beaches and picturesque bays. It offers numerous activities like sailing and diving to lovers of active holidays and is also famous for having one of the most equipped tennis camps in this part of the Adriatic. It has 14 clay tennis courts and 6 hard courts. The tourist development of Biograd began between the two world wars. Czech tourists were Biograd`s first guests during the 1920`s. The first hotel was built in 1935 at the location of today`s hotel Ilirija.

Umag–TerraIstrianaTerra Istriana is the name of the tourist resort that will be built at the location of the former Umag cement factory. A project worth around 200 million euros will be built on a surface of 118 acres in the south part of Umag. Plans include the building of villas, a hotel with around 80 rooms and a marina with 200 berths. The unique complex Terra Istriana will differ from others mainly because of the lake and the agricultural zone which will form its major part. Its architecture will be inspired by the Adriatic and a strong connection to the lake and sandy beaches.Lake Fiandara will be a location intended for sporting activities. Also located here will be a belvedere with two to three islands and all the necessary facilities for sporting activities. The building of various shopping centres and a fishing village is also planned.A botanical garden will be located in the eco-agricultural zone. A Roman amphitheatre should also fit well in here, where open air gatherings and shows could be observed from a seat in the audience or from docked boats. The rural resort with villas named Jezersko Selo will spread across ten acres. An animal park with deer, mouflons, sheep and donkeys is also planed to be located here.Umag, a small town and port on the northwest coast of Istria, represents Croatia`s ‘gate into Europe’. Today, Umag is a town of tourism and sport. It has been known as the sporting centre of Istria for years because it hosts the ATP tournament that many world famous tennis stars have participated in.It was discovered a long time ago by Roman noblemen who decided to claim it as their summer residence. The glitz and glamour of those times comes out through the Venetian houses that the centre of Umag is full of, even today. The hinterland of Umag also hides less known tourist attractions such as mountaineering, caving and other activities for lovers of adventure.

The renovation project of the tourist zone Marina Lučica and the building works of a large tourist resort in Primošten will be starting soon. In Primošten, investors plan to build a few smaller five-star hotels, luxurious villas, a multy-purpose congress hall and a number of sporting and recreational grounds. The starting phase would ensure accommodation for 1200 visitors and the value of the project is around 200 million euros.According to the project, the service zone will be separated from the tourist one and the roofs of this zone will be covered with solar panels as to save energy used for water heating. The authentic horticulture also needed to be well preserved so the horticulture experts and park architects composed a list of species in the whole area so they can be planted again when the architectural and green zones are defined.Primošten is a tourist town located 28 km south of Šibenik. Firstly, it was located on an island not far from land which was in 1542, at the time of the Turkish aggression, protected by city walls and a drawbridge. In old documents Primošten is referred to as Caput Cista (naked head), while it was first mentioned by today`s name in 1564.In time, the drawbridge was replaced by a dam, so Primošten became a peninsula, which together with the Raduča peninsula makes a unique natural entirety.Accommodation of guests is possible in the hotels ‘Zora’ and ‘Slava’ as well as the auto camp ‘Adriatic’, while sailors have the marina ‘Kremik’ at their disposal.Primošten is well known for its marvellous red wine Babić, which comes from the vineyards of Primošten. The vineyards are portrayed on a painting in the United Nations building in New York and represent a symbol of hard labour through centuries.

Biograd–TherenovationofCrvenalukaThe famous tourist resort Crvena luka, near Biograd, should by the beginning of the summer season 2012 appear in its new edition. 20 million euros will be invested in the renovation of this resort. The modern tourist complex will have 900 beds altogether, in 330 four-star accommodation units. That is two more than the resort has at this moment. The plan is to build 20 villas and apartment buildings, a hotel with a wellness centre and a spa and various hospitality and sporting contents.Crvena luka has always been the pearl of the Biograd Riviera and this part of the Adriatic, and with the renovation of capacity and the raising of categorization, owners are hoping to add to the overall improvement of the Riviera`s quality and offer. As part of the reconstruction of Crvena luka the contents on the beaches along the picturesque sandy coast lined with a dense pine forest, will also be renovated.Once a coronation city of Croatian kings, Biograd na moru is today a well known tourist and nautical centre and the same time the centre of Biograd Riviera. This town which has expanded to the size that is perfectly suited to man, lies on a peninsula surrounded by modern marinas and a promenade from which stretches an unforgettable view of the Pašman canal and the islands scattered across it.Its location in the centre of the Croatian coast, surrounded by three national parks (Paklenica, Kornati, Krka) and the nature parks Telaščica and Vransko Lake as well as its long tourist tradition and the rich tourist, sporting and hospitality offer are only some of the reasons for choosing Biograd and its surroundings as a destination for an interesting and dynamic holiday.

Rovanjska–VelebitandtheseaconnectSveto brdo is the name of the inter-regional project which aims to connect Velebit with the sea. This is the centre of mountain tourism which will, connected to the sea in Rovanjska, tender a brand new tourist offer. The project plan is to build the largest ski centre in Croatia which will have around 30 km of ski slopes. The ski centre will be reachable from the coastal side with a cable cart from Rovanjska. As well as that, Rovanjska and the whole coastal area at the foot of Velebit will offer a chance to enjoy the sea and the historical and cultural sights. The mountain and the sea will be connected by a three-stage gondola, five surface chair-lifts and several ordinary tow ski lifts, whilst the construction of a large water-park on 30 000 square meters, worth 8 million euros, is planned in Rovanjska.Dominating the park would be scenes from the films about the Indian chief Winnetou that were shot in Rovanjska and locations around Velebit which have lately been visited by many Winnetou fans. Rovanjska, located at the very end of the canal at the foot of Velebit, is a tourist location which offers visitors a quiet corner of untouched nature. Nearby this coastal settlement is the unique cave Modrič.

Vučedol was first inhabited around 6000 BC, at the time of the appearance of the first European farmers. The time between 3000-2200 BC was the most intense period of its existence. During its days of glory, the Vučedol culture stretched across a large area with a width of 700 km which included ten European states of today: the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania. Pottery especially stands out in the material culture and its outstanding technological quality and aesthetic values speak of a highly developed civilization. Vučedol ceramics draw attention with a perfect harmony of shape and placement of decorations. The most famous example is the Vučedol Dove, a cult pot in the shape of a bird and richly incrusted, which was found in 1938.The Vučedol Orion, which is considered to be the oldest European calendar, also belongs to the Vučedol culture.

Zagreb–LeFigarorecommendstheCroatiancapitalastheidealweekenddestinationThe French daily newspaper Le Figaro has recently recommended Zagreb to its readers as an ideal weekend destination. According to the French paper, thanks to the new Museum of modern art, the Croatian capital has become the artistic centre of the region and with this, a compulsory destination.‘Zagreb seems perfectly preserved with its horseshoe of gardens and parks that surround the historical centre of the city’, wrote the French journalist Sandra de Vivies, who spent a few days in Zagreb. She describes it as a city that skilfully balances between Slavic and Mediterranean influences.Besides the food, the double identity of the city is recognized in the two historical centres, the religious Kaptol and the secular Gradec, while the new town continues to develop thanks to the Museum of contemporary art. The journalist recommends staying at the most luxurious hotel in Zagreb, The Regent Esplanade Zagreb, which has an art deco interior that irresistibly invokes the atmosphere of the Orient Express. Among the cultural content, she recommends a visit to the Nova gallery, which holds works that critically examine the identity of a country which came out of a war 15 years ago. The journalist also recommends the Museum of arts and crafts and the Atelier Meštrović, pointing out the influence of the famous French sculptor Rodin on Ivan Meštrović, who left his atelier to the French state. For the end of the visit she recommends the Museum of contemporary art.Apart from the standard walk in the Upper town and Dolac (farmers’ market), the journalist describes the liveliness of the city streets, especially during the warm months of the year. She mentions the winery Bornstein as an ideal place for local wines initiation and the restaurant Baltazar, where she tried a local specialty, cottage cheese and soured cream, and translated it as cheesecake. The bistro Amfora, under the arcades of Dolac was described as one of the last remaining places with a socialist feel to it.For shopping, she mentions two important places- the Sunday morning antique market at Britanski Trg and the Croatian designed Startas trainers at the Sheriff and Cherry store.

Describing Dalmatia as the Cote de Azur of the east and the hidden jewel of the Mediterranean, the American TV station CNN recently recommended it to sailors as an ideal destination in the autumn when there are no tourist crowds but it is still warm, in its monthly sailing program ‘Mainsail’.‘For visitors in search of stable weather, after the summer crowds have gone and it is still warm... then the Dalmatian coast is at its best’ recommends CNN. ‘From the historically magnificent Split and glamorous Hvar to the picturesque island of Korčula and the fortified and unique Dubrovnik’, this is the route for a five day autumn cruise along the Dalmatian coast, which Mainsail recommends, including a visit to the island of Mljet.Hollywood stars Sean Connery, Gwyneth Paltrow and Pierce Brosnan publicly express their love of the Dalmatian coast, while Clint Eastwood and Sharon Stone searched there for private islands, states CNN.It points out that the Croatian coast is famous for its stone cities from the Middle Ages, Roman excavations, picturesque ports and the crystal clear sea, which attract numerous super-yachts during the summer months and a large number of foreign tourists.Describing the destinations of the proposed cruise, CNN mentions among other things the richness of the Roman and Renaissance monuments in Split, the unavoidable Palace of Diocletian and a number of contemporary cultural events, recommending a visit to the film festival in the middle of September. It mentions Hvar as a sanctuary for the jet-set, the Croatian Saint-Tropez, to whose popularity contributed stars such as Brad Pitt, Sharon Stone and Steven Spielberg. The club Carpe Diem is mentioned as a modern gathering place for celebrities that should not be missed.Along with the beauty of Korčula it is mentioned that this is Marco Polo`s birth place, while a visit to the bishop`s treasury that holds a collection of sacral and Renaissance artwork from Croatia and Italy is highly recommended. On the island of Mljet, docking is recommended in the Pomena bay, as is a visit to the National park, with its clear lakes, peaceful beaches and picturesque biking trails. The cruise ends under the walls of Dubrovnik, the ‘pearl of the Adriatic’, which is with its baroque churches, richly decorated palaces and tiled streets under the protection of UNESCO as part of the world heritage, and it is considered to be one of the most sophisticated historical cities in Europe, states CNN.Together with pointing out the specific charm of Dubrovnik, sailors are encouraged to walk along the city walls or to visit the music festival organised by Julian Rachlin and friends as well as a visit to the theatre festival.

Komiška falkuša (traditional fishing boat) and Modra špilja (Blue cave), the two sights on the islands of Vis and Biševo, are among other things the reasons why the French journalist from the production house Night and Day, and a world famous producer of tourist and educational documentaries Alain Dayan, recently visited Croatia. He, together with his crew, shot films at sites in Dubrovnik, Korčula, Mljet, Lostovo, Vis, Biševo, Hvar, Split, Šibenik and the National park Krka. The film will be distributed via a large network of partner television stations across the world. He was interested in the falkuša ‘Comeza-Lisboa’, a fishing boat that in 1998 sailed from Komiža to Lisbon, to represent the nautical and shipbuilding tradition of Croatia at the world exhibition EXPO.This is a boat built in 1997, as a replica of the last falkuša which was sunk by a hurricane in a bay of the island Biševo. The building of a replica of a traditional boat used by the fishermen of Vis, nine meters long, that was in use until the middle of the 20th century, caused great public and expert interest. So much, that a few documentaries and a radio drama have already been made about it.Its image could also be found on a Croatian postal stamp, which won third place at the philatelic exhibition in Paris in 1999 in the category ‘the most beautiful stamp of the European continent’. Komiška falkuša had its own regatta in the past. The last one was held in 1937 and the tradition was renewed this year with a regatta from Hvar to Vis.The small island Biševo, located less than five nautical miles from Komiža, the cradle of falkuša, hides the famous Modra Špilja (the blue cave), which was painted in 1884 and described by baron Eugen von Ransonet. At his initiative, the entrance to the cave was widened and so became accessible to the whole world. Thus visible, beauty of the cave, coloured in silvery blue, has constantly attracted tourists ever since. The cave has two openings; a smaller one artificially made so that boats can pas through, while the other, a much wider arch, lies beneath the sea level on the south side of the cave.Sunlight that penetrates through this underwater entrance firstly breaks and then reflects from the bottom of the cave.

Lastovo is an island in the south of Croatia surrounded by crystal clear seas and well known for the beautiful nature and its unique chimneys - fumari. But Lastovo is different from the other islands because of one more special thing – stars. The island and the archipelago around it are so far from land that they are protected from every kind of pollution, including light pollution, which results in a view of the sky turning into an unforgettable experience. The sky in the night time, covered in shining stars, leaves the onlooker breathless. This lay impression was confirmed by foreign astronomy photographers two years ago when they announced that Lastovo is probably the best destination in Europe for watching the sky.The stone houses with the imaginative fumari give Lastovo its recognizable personality and stamp. Nobody knows why the inhabitants made sure that their chimneys were so heterogeneous and it is a fact that on the island, especially among the older houses, two similar chimneys can seldom be found. This centuries old tradition of building unusual fumari has been preserved until today.Lastovo was proclaimed a nature park in Croatia in 2006 with the intention of preserving its natural and cultural values and also the biological diversity of the island, its sea and underwater. The island is full of beautiful bays with popular tourist destinations. The most famous are Zaklopatica and Pasadur on the north shore, Skrivena Luka and Ubli on the south shore and Lučica, at the foot of the village Lastovo. The church of St. Kuzma and Damien, the patron Saints of Lastovo, which dominates the village, should also be mentioned as a historical treasure. It was built 700 years ago and holds a rich treasury with numerous valuable relics. Knežev dvor (the prince`s castle), which is called Palac by inhabitants, is also an important sight. The people of Lastovo on their own accord, agreed to come under the rule of the Dubrovnik Republic, which in return gave them autonomy so their Prince could keep court at Palac. The island is first mentioned in written documents in the 6th century under the names Ladesta and Ladeston. As it is strategically important, Lastovo became a ‘military island’ after the Second World War, so up until 1988 this was a forbidden area for foreigners. This lead to economic stagnation and the moving of inhabitants off the island but at the same time nature was being preserved.

Rijeka–TheplanetariumenrichesthetouristofferThe Astronomy centre in Rijeka was opened only a year and a half ago and has already become an unavoidable place for tourists visiting Kvarner and its inland. This is a centre that brings together science, education and fun. At night, visitors can watch the stars through a large telescope with explanations from experts, while during the daytime films are shown in English, Italian or French. ‘A race towards the Earth’ (La corsa sulla Terra) is a fun, animated, 30 minute film in Italian about two kingdoms and their people from the Moon who are trying to land on Earth in a spaceship.Different to the Italian film which is mostly enjoyed by the younger generations, is the French film ‘Vibrato’ which shows a journey into space through a virtual reality simulator. This is a real treat for true lovers of Sci-Fi because along with the visual impression, they can experience the true echo and sounds of space. Two films are in English. ‘Planets in Sight’ is a documentary classic suited for wide audience. The film offers the viewers information about the Solar system with the help of suggestive panoramic shots. ‘Two Small Pieces of Glass’ is an entertaining documentary about the history and development of the telescope, what the first telescopes looked like, what the largest telescopes in the world look like and what challenges lie ahead of the newest generation of observatories. The Astronomy centre in Rijeka, which was recently accepted into the International Planetarium Association, is located in the renovated former military fort built in 1941 on the mount Sveti Križ. The centre also won a special award from the Tourist Board because it is well adjusted for persons with disabilities and offers programs for kindergartens, schools, tourist groups and the public of all ages. It has an astronomical observatory and a modern planetarium equipped with the latest digital technology.

VaraždinskeToplice–TheoldestnaturalhealthspainCroatia

Varaždinske Toplice (Varaždin spas) is a charming place on the northeast edge of the Croatian Zagorje (a region located behind a mountain) whose natural gift – a thermal water well – marked its location, gave it its name and ensured the continuity of the healing processes through all cultural periods, from the time of the Roman Empire when the Romans named it Aqua Iasae, until today when it is once again becoming a fashionable spa of the modern thermal riviera.Proof of tourism in this area dates back to the 3rd century A.D. and it comes in the findings of various coins from the area of Panonia, the Balkans and Italy. Thanks to archaeological findings and research that has been done since 1953, a complex of Roman public architecture was discovered and recognised as thermal baths from the 2nd century. It is made up of a bathing section that is composed of a bathing building with pools and a basilica, a forum with arcades located around the main thermal well and a holy ground with the temples on Jupiter, Junona and Minerva. This is one of the best preserved Roman sites in Croatia. At the time of the Roman Empire, Varaždinske Toplice experienced their golden age but also in later times, the thermal waters with their healing quality, which come from depths of almost 1800 meters, have remained the highlight of the settlement and the reason for health conscious tourists to visit. The beginnings of the modern health spa in Varaždinske Toplice date back to the 17th century, while at the start of the 19th century they were developed on the basis of medical science and stood shoulder to shoulder with other European health spas. The Special hospital for medical rehabilitation which holds 1100 beds is also supplied with the thermal waters.Varaždinske Toplice are located on the northeast edge of the Croatian Zagorje surrounded by green hills and meadows, vineyards, orchards and forests, just above the valley of the river Bednja.

Brtonigla–AgroturismthatoffersacaveLocated in the area of Brtonigla, 5 km from the sea, is the agro tourism estate Sterle, located on Stancija Drušković (Drušković estate). This is a pleasant, comfortable and hospitable destination where visitors can expect a typical Istrian welcome, an exquisite gastronomic offer and the beautiful untouched natural surroundings. But Sterle is unique by one more thing, not only in Croatia but also in the world. Located in their ‘back yard’ is a real cave. It is called Mramornica and it is one of the biggest and the most beautiful Istrian caves which represents a real jewel of the underwater world with stalagmites in various colours and up to thirteen meters in height. The surface which can be toured is as big as a football field. The cave was mentioned in documents dating back to 1770. The entrance to the cave is extremely steep and has almost vertical steps. A view onto the unreachable parts of the pit, which are mysterious and attractive, stretches from the renovated cave paths.Visitors of the cave can drink and dine at Sterle where the hosts offer domestic products exclusively: smoked ham, sausages, salami, ombola (dried pork fillet) gnocchi and fuži (Istrian pasta). The wine offer includes muškat, malvazija, teran, cabernet sauvignon and melot. The hosts use the bottom of the cave to store barrels with all five types of wine, so the wine can ripen in barrique for a year at a constant temperature of 14 degrees. The wines from this line were named ‘vino della grotta’(wine from the grotto) by the hosts.Adding to the uniqueness of Sterle is the 50 year old mulberry tree, which is believed to be one of the oldest in Istria. With its huge crown it provides a shade to one of the big terraces of Stancija Drušković.

Brijuni–TheNationalParkwhichplayedhosttomanyoftheworld’sgreatsThe National park Brijuni, an indented group of 14 islands and islets along the western Istrian coast has always been an attractive destination for members of the European and world aristocracy. At the beginning of the 20th century many crowned heads and members of the world`s artistic elite resided in this exclusive summer resort. The islands were chosen as the residency of the leader of former Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito and in that time hosted many interesting names. Sofia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Gina Lollobrigida are only some of the famous people who have visited these islands on which Tito received numerous world leaders of his time.Brijuni are attractive to members of the world`s jet-set even today. In the past few years Brijuni were visited by Princess Caroline of Monaco, who was astounded by the beauties of the islands and has become their loyal guest, then the world famous tenor Placido Domingo, the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the American actor of Croatian origin John Malkovich, the fashion designer Ottavio Missoni and the model Naomi Campbell.A hint of glamour from the time when the magic and beauty of Brijuni was enjoyed by the political elite of the former communist regime can still be felt in the three, so called, Tito`s villas. They are the villa Lovorka, Primorka and Dubravka. Located in the south east part of the island Veliki Brijun right next to the sea front and surrounded by the richly preserved Mediterranean vegetation, the three stone villas offer peace, privacy and a perfect ambience for visitors wishing to escape everyday life.Villa Lovorka, built in 1931 and renovated this year is composed of two ground floor parts able to accommodate six persons. The villa also has its own pier. The oldest villa, Primorka, was built in 1907and can accommodate eight people. It is located in the park shared with villa Dubravka which is suitable for four people. This villa was built in 1956. All three villas have a housekeeper and a gardener. Besides the stone villas, accommodation can be found in the hotel Neptun-Istra, which is located on the sea front in the central port of Veliki Brijun. It has 67 rooms and 20 apartments and in its velocity in also the hotel Karmen, with 57 rooms.

Besides their history and the numerous great names they have accommodated, Brijuni are famous for their geological-paleontological remains. On just four of the sites on Veliki Brijun more than 200 dinosaur foot prints were discovered and already while getting off the boat on the shore of the port, visitors are greeted by dinosaurs; on the limy stone block brought from one of the Brijuni quarries, a three toed dinosaur footprint can be clearly seen.It is important to mention that the mild Mediterranean climate is also to be credited for a pleasant stay on the Brijuni islands. There is a lot of sun, warmth and moist air which ensures rich vegetation.

Konavle–Anadventureonfourlegsorfourwheels

Located on the southeast side of the Dubrovnik Riviera are Konavle. This area in the most southern part of Croatia is special for its natural beauties and contrasts – mountains and plains, forests and rocky parts, blue and green, or as the people of Konavle would call it: Upper and Lower bands.Edged with mountains from the north and the Adriatic Sea from the south, they stretch east up to the entry of Bokakotorski bay and the Prevlaka peninsula and descend west to the tame bays of Cavtat and Obod. The preserved nature, the unique and highly valuable rural architecture, the numerous monuments from the thousand year old history of this area, the old traditions preserved through folklore, the unique traditional costumes and embroidery, the harmony of life in nature…all make Konavle unique and recognizable. But besides the natural riches and the culturally-historical heritage of Konavle, in the village Popovići 30 km south of Dubrovnik, there is a riding centre Kojan Koral for tourists searching for adventure, which offers numerous facilities. One of them is the recreational riding tour whose path leads through olive-groves and pine forests and stretches to the rocks of Konavle from which there is a beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea.Here we also have the four wheel safari based on the panoramic four wheel motorcycle rides (ATV) that do not require prior driving experience. The 25 km long safari route passes through Čilipi, where it then stops for a tour of a traditional Konavle house and then continues through the Konavle field, across the river Ljuta and back to Kojan Koral. At the end of their adventure trip, participants are greeted with home-made smoked ham, cheese and wine.Along with the riding school, Kojal Koral offers therapeutic riding which requires a physiotherapist who helps people with disabilities.

Unije–AsmallislandforabigholidayAlthough small, with only one inhabited village, the island Unije attracts more and more tourists each year. The reason for this are the cultural-historical sites, beautiful beaches and walking trails, preserved nature, exquisite hospitality, good infrastructure and the absence of cars and crowds.By its surface it is the largest of the islands surrounding the Island of Lošinj and thanks to the good position at the entrance to Kvarner, the natural sources of drinking water and the fruitful soil, Unije has been inhabited for a very long time.Proof that it has been inhabited since ancient history comes in the numerous archaeological findings on land and the waters surrounding the island. A good example is the remains of a Roman villa. The waters surrounding the island have always been the crossroads of nautical trails that lead from Istria towards Dalmatia and deeper into the Kvarner bay.Because of the large number of cliffs and reefs scattered around the island it is not a surprising fact that many lost their lives while their boats sank. The remains of such a shipwreck can be seen at the entry to the port of Unije. On the island there is only one village that bears the same name as the island. It is located in the west part of the island, famous for its olive-groves, where it is protected from winds. It has a few restaurants, a patisserie, a bakery, a post office and a grocery shop. Accommodation (rooms and apartments) can be sought in the local houses with their characteristic wide gable-fronted houses. There is also a small airport on the island, 30 km from the airport in Pula and 8 km from the one in Lošinj.A regular boat line connects the island with Lošinj while a few times a week it is possible to reach Rijeka by a catamaran.

Zadar–Galiotsofthe21stcenturyOne of the characteristics of Zadar, a town of exceptional three thousand year old history with a rich cultural heritage and numerous sights, are definitely the barkajoli (lat.barcatores), who have been, since the 14th century, connecting the two ends of the city port in all weather conditions, thus saving the time of their loyal passengers. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages when the Commune of Zadar gave certain citizens the right to charge a fee for transport in their small boats around the port. Today, in their red boats, which have recently become a souvenir of the city, they connect the two ends of the city port, standing up while paddling, much like Venetian gondoliers.Even though this is a short journey (71 meters) and takes a minute an a half, a ride in these unique paddling boats with the galiots of the 21st century is an unavoidable tourist attraction for most visitors of Zadar. There are only a few remaining today, while in the past there were many more – during the time of the First World War there were 21, to be precise. In those days, even two women paddled these boats while their husbands were in the war. This kind of boat paddling is usually a family tradition carried on from generation to generation in a few families and it has sustained itself despite all of the challenges of the modern times.Apart from tourists, their services are often used by school children, delivery men, merchants and anyone who needs to reach the centre of the city a few times a day.Taking this boat ride you can save up to 15 minutes by not going around and across the bridge that connects the Zadar peninsula to the rest of the city.To show their appreciation and respect, the city authorities have for over thirty years entertained these modern galiots on New Year`s Eve and since eight years ago they have been given grants. Two years ago a documentary was filmed about them in Croatia, under the title ‘Zadarski barkajoli’ (The boat paddlers of Zadar), by screen writer and director Tanja Kanceljak.
