When Caught in a Storm... Roger Parlett

Thunderstorms on Michigan waters are frequently unpredictable. Even with the best weather reports, along with constant and accurate observations of climatic conditions, boaters can still be caught in open waters in a thunderstorm. Then, with or without a light-ning protective system, it is critical to take additional safety precautions to protect the boat's personnel.

These precautions during a thunderstorm are:

Stay in the center of the cabin if the boat is so designed. If no enclosure (cabin) is available, stay low in the boat. Don't be a "stand-up human" lightning mast!

Keep arms and legs in the boat. Do not dangle them in the water.

Discontinue fishing, water skiing, scuba diving, swimming or other water activities when there is lightning or even when weather conditions look threatening. The first lightning strike can be a mile or more in front of an approaching thunderstorm cloud.

Disconnect and do not use or touch the major electronic equipment, including the radio, throughout the dura-tion of the storm.

Lower, remove or tie down the radio antenna and other protruding devices if they are not part of the lightning protection system.

To the degree possible, avoid making contact with any portion of the boat connected to the lightning protection system. Never be in contact with two components connected to the system at the same time. Example: The gear levers and spotlight handle are both connected to the system. Should you have a hand on both when lightning strikes, the possibility of electrical current passing through your body from hand to hand is great. The path of the electrical current would be directly through your heart--a very deadly path!

It would be desirable to have individuals aboard who are competent in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid. Many individuals struck by lightning or exposed to excessive electrical current can be saved with prompt and proper artificial respiration and/or CPR. There is no danger in touching persons after they have been struck by lightning.

If a boat has been, or is suspected of having been, struck by lightning, check out the electrical system and the compasses to insure that no damage has occurred.

Boating in Michigan’s waters is an enjoyable activity for many people. Keep it that way! Listen to the weather reports! Learn to read the weather conditions. Heed these reports and the conditions. Stay off or get off the water when weather conditions are threatening. Install and/or maintain an adequate lightning protection system. Have it inspected regularly. Follow all safety pre-cautions should you ever be caught in a thunderstorm. By using good judgment, it is less likely that first aid or CPR will be needed while boating.

Kensington Kids Fishing Outing Submitted By: Jim Roberston, Kids Outing Coordinator

Every year it seems to be the same. I order the rods and reels a month in advance having no idea how many kids we will have, so I take a guess. Last year we had 112 kids pre registered, I had ordered120 fishing poles. That worked out well even though more kid’s show up than had reg-istered, This year I ordered 150 fishing poles but only 87 kids pre regis-tered. As it turned out we have an inventory of 30 fishing pole kits for next year.

By the time I did the shopping for food and drinks, I had a pretty good idea as to how many people would be there, I had 172 preregistered two days prior. At that point I’m pretty confident we’d have enough food.

The morning of the big day I was on the road at 6:00 am, my truck loaded to the gills with tents, tables, cooking gear, food and drinks, Ron Witte had his truck full of the fishing poles to give away, Holden’s Party Store on Milford Rd. do-nated 80 lbs of ice to cool the drinks. At 7:00 am Carmen Zirles, Ron Witte, Mark Platt, Ray Huff and Matt Lubaway ar-rive to get things rolling. Two tents were set up for the tackle giveaway and animal show, as well as tables for cooking and registration. The DNR kid’s fishing licenses were not available this year due to the restructuring of all licenses by the DNR. Mark Platt set up the MWS banner at the entrance of the East Shore Fishing Area and Bob Olari drove around the park and set out, MWS Kids fishing, signs at strategic locations around the park. Jim Maddox and his broth-er Butch took charge and separated the Walt’s Crawlers into cups for Matt Lubaway to passed out to the anglers at registration. Our members including Gary Towns, Brad Allen, Mark and Karen Davis, Larry Tabaka, Bill and Mrs. Gag-non, Mitch Nimmoor and John Lengyel spread out along the shore line to help kids and parents set up their fishing gear. This is a very important part of our outing as many parents want to get their kids out fishing but know very little about how to set up the gear. Many thanks to each of you. Nelson, The Animal Guy of Wild Life Safari, arrived right on time with his menagerie of wild animals. Kids and parents alike gathered around for the big show. Nelson has performed for us on at least three previous occasions and has nev-er failed to give us a fresh and interesting show.

After the Wild Life Safari show group pictures were taken and bob Olari presented the first, second and third place tro-phies to the kids who caught the biggest fish, (all blue gills) this year.

Carmen Zirles kitchen crew prepared a delicious lunch of hotdogs, beans, chips, cake and plenty of drinks. When the animal how was over, everyone jumped in line for chow. At this point I start to worry if there will be enough food, then I’m worried that there is too much food. In the end we pretty much had it right. We had a few less people than last year and had some food and drinks left over which will be used at the membership meetings.

By all accounts we had another MWS success. I have received numerous compliments from members and non-members alike about how much they enjoyed their day with Metro West Steelheaders. We registered 107 kids and 84

adults, which isn’t bad con-sidering that we had only 87 kids preregistered.

I want to thank everyone who donated their time and talents to help make this a great MWS event. I imag-ine I have missed some of you, who helped and I apologize, your efforts are greatly appreciated. We couldn’t pull it off without each of you.

19 Salmon in the River! Matt Lubaway

Lets all pass on big hearty CONGRATULATIONS to Margaret Sheeran, her students and Novi Middle School for helping us to a successful year; 19 salmon smolts graduated. The fish ranged from 4 inch up to stunning 6 inchers. In fact some of them were beginning to look like small adults. See progression at the right. May 17th, Matt Lubaway and Maggie met over to Novi Middle School to pick up our latest “School of Salmon”. We drained the 75 gallon tank siphoning water into my cooler, then we captured our fish by the nets and transferred them over. I think we were all thrilled to see how the fish had grown, these were the largest fish so far.

Well done!

Our 2014 class and I set out in my red Mustang for the Clinton River behind Yates Cider Mill in Rochester Hills. We arrived at the same location on the river, as last year. This section has slack water current and a slow eddy, which appeared ideal for the release. A few young adults Joined and helped me; we again captured the smolts one by one for release in to the Clinton River and into the wild to begin a new journey. We watched the salmon in the river for some time, like excited parents watching out offspring head out to grow up.

Matt Lubaway, Salmon in the Classroom chairman.

METRO-WEST STEELHEADERS at the

MICHIGAN UNITED CONSERVATION CLUB 2014 ANNUAL CONVENTION

John Wright attended his first convention and carried the MWS votes, along with Matt Lubaway, MUCC District 1 Director. He said that although the weekend was long he thoroughly enjoyed all the new Offic-ers, Board Directors and Delegates that he met. He even reacquainted himself with friends he had not seen in a long time. Before the weekend was over, John was elected and sworn in as the new MUCC District 1 Chairman. He is looking for-ward to bringing greater involvement of MWS with MUCC. Eric Braden and Roger Hinchcliff attended the MUCC Leadership Training and said it was fantastic.

At the beginning of the convention, we all sadly learned the Erin McDonough, Executive Director, is re-signing and soon to begin a new position at the Michigan Oil and Gas Association. MUCC President Jack Van Rhee expounded on all her accomplishment (restoring profitability, slashing indebtedness, increas-ing membership and many monumental legislative successes and future (Citizens for Professional Wild-life Management – 373,103 signatures), and restored confidence in MUCC. Erin will remain for a short while to help in the transition. Erin make a final plea for every member to memorize the Conservation Pledge and the MUCC Mission statement.

PLEDGE: "I give my pledge as an American, to save and faithfully defend from

waste, the natural resources of my country, its air, soil and minerals, its forests,

waters and wildlife." Ben East

MISSION: “Uniting Citizens to Conserve, Protect, and Enhance our Natural Resources and Outdoors Heritage”.

Work has already begun through a special executive search committee (including our own Matt Lubaway). Hopefully, MUCC will be able to announce a new E.D. at the next Board of Directors meeting August 16th. Erin McDonough even remains as special advisor for her own replacement.

Statewide Officers and Director Elections were also held during the convention. Meet your NEW lead-ers:

Ron Burris President (2nd left) Jack Van Rhee Statewide Vice President (Left) Dan Radloff Statewide Vice President (3rd) George Lindquist Statewide Vice President (4th) See MUCC website for the entire list in-cluding other Officers, Regional Vice Presi-dents and Directors at Large.

District 1, along with MUCC District 1 again set a new record $12,500 fund raising and again beat District 2. “The Buck Stop” Award will be returning to us for another year.

MWS Members’ Perpective of MUCC Annual Convention Submitted By: Roger Hinchcliff:

“I thought the leadership council training was awesome. I learned so much from everyone throughout the course of the weekend and got a real handle on the legislative pro-cess here in Michigan. By attending the convention I also learned how MUCC works and what they really do for all of us. I was also inspired by all the people from all walks of life and the different clubs with the same passion as us. MUCC is the voice of the sportsmen in Michigan and we all should continue supporting them.”

Submitted By: Eric Braden: “I would like to thank the MWS Board for sending Roger Hinchcliff & Myself to the MUCC Conservation Leadership Training this past week end. The experience was excellent and has inspired many future action items for follow up. The Program content was engaging and relevant to cur-rent events. I suffered from information overload on sever-al occasions and had to request a copy of the slide packs for future reference. The MUCC Staff & Presenters were warm, committed to the event & demanded participation (you weren’t going home bored). The MUCC RAM Facility is gorgeous, the grounds are top notch, in a quiet, heavily wooded setting, with light breezes through the pines and plenty of bird in-teraction (The Beach front fire ring was my favorite). The food was excellent and the pace easy going, so no real added stress to the program, that really made it easy to take it all in. With the commitment to conservation that MWS instills, I definitely recommend the Board continue sending participants in the future. The whole event was very well planned and no one was left to feel not welcome, or uninvolved. If you stay onsite there is plenty of interaction w/ other clubs and an unbe-lievable opportunity for networking (Made a bunch of new friends for future follow ups).”

Submitted By: Matt Lubaway: What amazes me is that, I get to go; it is so rewarding. I get so much from this group every year, and the camara-derie makes the fun out of work. In addition, I get a per-sonal reward by knowing that I am making a difference and help make Michigan a better place.

Just 4 years ago, it seemed like no one up at MUCC heard of Metro-West Steelheaders or me; I watched as the repu-tation Metro-West Steelheaders has grown. We are quite well respected as are many of the issues and resolutions we sponsored and care about, like: license fee increase, Asian Carp problem, Lake Erie algae and farm awareness, Chicago area waterway, and other. I am thrilled that these issues are on the tip of everyone’s tongue now at the con-vention. We may not be at the top but we are being no-ticed.

Now MUCC has thrown down a challenge to us get more members involved and learn how to engage our youth in our Mission: United in Conservation and involvement in the great outdoors. John Wright and I hope to get you all more enthused!” Submitted By: John Wright: (via telephone; para-phrased) “I truly enjoyed the opportunity to attend, and it is a memory I will carry on. The values of those within the group are inspiring. The efforts of all groups under the MUCC umbrella is a very powerful voice.

What concerns me however is the median age of the group of attendees, and the lack of the younger genera-tions’ involvement. If there is any message I can convey to those whom will be reading my take on the event, is that the younger generations need to be involved. Just the same as people of my generation, and even those older than myself, we need the next generation to pass the torch on to, and pick up where we will have left off.”

Toledo Beach Walleye Tournament June 14, 2014

Port Captains: Fabian Sepulveda and Evan Clark

The weekend's tournament included Metro West and Huron Valley clubs. There were 16 boats in

the tournament. At the 9 a.m. fish call most of the boats had 3-5 Walleye with one boat (Scrapper)

having 13 Walleye. Most everyone used Bottom Bouncers with crawler harnesses, trolling at 1.5

mph. We had a delicious meatball sub lunch provided by Fabian and his wife, including a Father's

Day cake. It was a great turnout and everyone had a great time.

First Annual Steelheader “Lake Erie Walleye Tournament” Port Captains Phil Bustos and Dennis Kovacs

Submitted By: Phil Bustos

On Saturday May 31 & Sunday June 1, 2014 the first Steelheader’s “Lake Erie Walleye” Tournament was held, formerly known as the Region 3 Tournament. This is a two day tournament open to all the Steel-header clubs. You can fish on Saturday or Sunday or both days for the same entry fee. This tournament has its own set of rules. We had 16 boat and 50 members and three clubs attending from Huron Valley, Mid Michigan and Metro West. First place went to Huron Valley Captain Will Wells on the boat Scrapper with a total weight of 26.55 lbs. Scrapper also took Sundays Big Fish weighing 6.40 lbs.

Second place went to Metro West Caption Bill Gag-non on Rose Bud with a weight of 23.65 Third place went to Metro West Captain Larry Taba-ka on Fish, Fish, Fish, with a weight of 22.25 lbs. Fourth place went to Huron Valley Captain Tom O’Harris on Sir Walter weighting in 21.20 lbs. Sir Walter took Saturdays Big Fish weighing 5.95 lbs. Fifth Place went to Mid Michigan Captain Doug Her-

buck on Fishical Therapy with a weight of 18.60 lbs. I would like to thank Jeff Bustos who pulled off close to miracle feed all 50 members for $2.50 for each day. For lunch we had hamburgers and hot dogs side dishes and desert with all the fixings. Thanks Chief Jeff. I would also like to thank all who attended in making this a successful event.

Torch Lake Fishing Round Up Henry Nabors

I had my boat on Clam Lake for forty days thanks to Bill Frost and his next door neighbor Mary Ann (they each loaned me a slip to cover this period). I was able to fish Torch Lake on thirteen different days. It was a very enjoyable learning experience. I was able to fish with old friends and new TCAS friends. As a reminder, the boat is a 22’ Fourwinns with a 5.7 L engine. Deep water trolling usually consisted of nine lines - four lines on two downriggers, two dipsy rods, two copper or leadcore rods and a long line down the middle. Four lines were used for shallow trolling.

The Results:

Fish Caught/Hooked 14 Eight Atlantic Salmon (three got away) and six lake trout

Number of Hours Trolling 52 7 hours shallow (20’ - 50’) and 45 deep (50’ - 280’)

Area Fished: Torch at Clam River (area 4 miles south to 6 miles north)

Fish caught per hour of trolling .27 or one every four hours

Fish Caught/hr trolling deep .31 or one every three point three hours

Crew members - New Trollers 9 Six TCAS members interested in learning

Crew members - Experienced 6 Five TCAS members

Observations: It was fun getting to know more about Torch Lake! It was a exciting getting twenty six anglers - most new TCAS mem-bers - to fish for Atlantic salmon and a different strain of lake trout. It was enjoyable having the TCAS tournament on Torch and having five Atlantics and a brown at weighed in. Most of these anglers will be back to Torch to try again, I am sure. Bill Frost is planning to host the Torch tournament earlier next year! Jared Krogel is planning a Torch Ice fishing event in 2015 if there is enough ice. Early in this time frame, Joe Cruzen and Dick Hartrick fished on Joe’s boat along side Bill and me to get some Torch ex-perience. Dick and Joe landed two lake trout that are not included in the above information. Their two fish weighed in at 18 lbs. Thanks Heather for your presentation in May at the TCAS meeting that helped us better understand Atlantic salmon and the fishery around Traverse City. Thanks for telling us about the lake trout strain in this inland lakes system. TCAS mem-bers, Heather wanted to know some of the above statistic for her research. It was educational to be able to send Heather Hittinger (DNR Fisheries) scale samples and statistics for most of the fish caught by Bill and me. In addition, I have sent the details of our fishing experience; I hope it is of some use in the research. If you would like a copy of the detail report, let me know. Jim Chamberlin has been fishing Torch’s shallow water for the last two months and reports having signifi-cantly better results. He plans to be at the August meeting; you can ask him about his methods. Torch is a great lake for small boats; give it a try!! Bill now has his 16’ Lund rigged for trolling Torch. I look forward to getting fishing reports from him this summer and fall. I hope other TCAS members will provide reports as well. I hope to see several of you at Ludington, Manistee, Frankfort, Grand Bay and Crystal Lake this summer!

Featured Destination - Black River Near Onaway, Michigan

Submitted by Mark Davis

I am a recent beginner for fishing for Brook Trout, and I

love them. They are lightning fast, aggressive, beautiful

to look at, and utterly delicious.

I assumed that in order to get brookies you would have to travel

to the UP, search forever to find places to get on the small rivers,

or beg for information from locals. Fortunately, I found this to be

incorrect. You can indeed find plenty of Brook Trout only three or

four hours from the Detroit metropolitan area. There is a great

book called, Twelve Classic Trout Streams in Michigan, by Jim

DuFresne. It is extremely well put together, with pictures, maps,

directions, and GPS coordinates. It was still somewhat of a chal-

lenge to find all the access points. They are not close together.

You will easily spend an hour or two each day traveling dirt roads

to find fish. Another great source of information on the system and access sites can be found at www.upperblack.org.

For my first trip to the Black River last year I was joined by Adam Trenz. We camped at the Black Lake Campground

near Onaway Michigan. Our first afternoon fishing was fairly productive. We both caught several Brook Trout ranging in

size from under the legal limit of 7 inches to about 10 inches.

We were not well equipped for the little fish. And in what could only be called a comedy of errors, we lost nearly all of

the little things. The challenges were first they are fast, slippery little buggers, impossible to hold onto. Second, we had

very small nets, but not small enough. They could seemingly wiggle through holes half the size of their diameter. We

fished small spinners, green or chartreuse seem to be the best colors, small jigs tipped with alternatively small worms or

tube baits. When the brookies were biting it didn't seem to matter what you threw at them they hit pretty much every-

thing.

Our second day fishing we were fairly far downstream, and the water seemed much warmer. We did not have a single

Brook Trout on our lines for most of that day. About midway through the day we started to see the occasional small-

mouth. At that point we realized the water had warmed too much in the brook-

ies were probably far upstream.

On the last day, I fished alone. I went to the access point that was near Blue

Lakes on the map in the book I mentioned earlier. I started very early in the

morning and within 30 minutes I had a full stringer of fish. Unfortunately I was

quite exhausted from three days of hiking in the water and as I climbed out of

the stream, I stumbled and fell filling my waders full of ice cold water, and irre-

trievably losing the stringer full of Brookies. By the time I emptied my waders

and got back in the water the brookies had pretty much stopped biting.

I've been back to the Black twice since then. Each time I've gone I've caught

at least a few brookies. Fishing for them has been challenging and loads of

fun!

As a recent report - I was fortunate enough to take a trip up to the area for the 4th with a good friend of mine; Simon. We covered a ton of water hunting down cold water and active Brookies. After our hard work, we were rewarded with a couple of meals, and even fish in to 10”-12” range!

More importantly, to me, it is about the scen-ery and the beauty of being on such a ma-jestic stream with great company. I highly recommend a trip to the Black for all; I can’t wait to get back there!

Featured Recipe - Steamed Walleye with Spinach and

Herb Pesto Sauce

Submitted By: Jeff Bustos

When the summer heat and humidity comes around, it is hard

to find ways to eat fish, which do not seem to “weigh you

down”. Jeff Bustos brought us a light, healthy, DELICIOUS

recipe which is perfect for this time of year!

The recipe calls for Walleye, however without any on hand, I

substituted with perch and it was fantastic. This recipe is a

great way to stray from the typical summertime preparation

method of grilling fish, and introduce fresh produce in the

mix as well.

Ingredient list:

2-3 Pounds of Walleye Fillets - Cut into serving size pieces

of whole smaller fillets for a better presentation.

3/4 - 1 Pound of Fresh Spinach Leaves

1 Large Shallot of 1/4 Red Onion

1/3 to 1/2 Cups of good quality Olive Oil

1 Tablespoon of Fresh Minced Garlic

Coarse Ground Salt and Pepper to Taste

1 Good Sized Lime

1/2 Cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese

Veggie Mix– Mushrooms, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, car-

rots, pea pods, etc.

1/4 Cup of Fresh Parsley or Cilantro Leaves

In a food processor, added the onion or shallot, garlic, and a

small amount of the spinach. Blend on a high-speed setting

and add a bit of the olive oil to help the mixture start to lique-

fy.

Keep adding the rest of the spinach and oil, the parsley or

cilantro leaves, and the juice of the fresh lime until the mix-

ture is completely liquid. Add the oil a small amount at a

time, and add just enough to help everything start to smooth

out. A little more or less really doesn’t matter, so experiment

a bit. You want a consistency like a thick cream soup.

After everything is liquid, add the salt and pepper to taste, the

parmesan cheese, and just pulse the mixer to incorporate eve-

rything.

Cut all of the vegetables finely so they cook quickly, or par-

tially cook them in the oven if you like larger pieces..

Season each piece of fish with salt and pepper and place it on

a large sheet of aluminium foil. Add a large spoonful of the

pesto sauce on top of the fish. Pile a small handful of the veg-

etables on top and salt and pepper the top of the vegetables.

Seal the foil into a tight tent-type of packet to keep in the

steam and then place the packets on a baking sheet. Put the

sheet into a preheated 350° - 375°F oven for about 15-20

minutes, depending on how thick your pieces of fish are. A

little longer won’t hurt, except to make the fish fall apart after

it is cooked.

The completed package will be very juicy, with enough liq-

uid to season a small mound of rice or pasta.

Serve with a little bit of the pesto sauce on top once removed

from the foil and placed on the side dish. This should serve at

least for people, and it’s a low fat, low calorie, yet very tasty

dish!

Increase the pesto batch size a bit, and toss the remaining

peston with a bowl of hot pasta and shredded parmesan cheese and serve the fish and vegetables on top of a small

mount of the coated pasta. Feel free to experiment here also.

Add other herbs such as basil or fennel tops, dill, or maybe

even a bit of additional garlic.

The photo shown above was cooked per this recipe, utilizing perch, and brown rice opposed to pasta.

Featured Big Water Technique - 2013 Captain of the

Year Dave Zawacki, talks Slide Divers

Submitted By: Eric Braden

2013 MWS Captain of the Year Dave Zawacki mentioned in the December Newsletter, season summary, that Slide Divers were what made the difference for the Salty Dog.

At the Manistee Sunday tournament the day had a heavy overcast. By mid-day the Salty Dog had four large kings, but the deep bite had died off. Dave decided to run up high with Slide Divers. First mate Ted Ringer landed a 12.3# Steely to give them first place, with a 99# cooler (that wouldn’t shut!).

Dave indicated that Slide Divers allow you to run J-Plugs and Spoons way back and away from the boat. They are perfect for pre-dawn setups when boards are not a good idea (difficult to set and hard to make sure clear of other boat traffic). Once the sun is up and the early bite is over (~9:30AM) Capt’n Dave will pull the Slide Divers and run tandem pairs of Wire Line Dipsys.

Dave feels Slide Divers are more versatile early & late in the day and therefore a better alternative to Lead Core. Dave runs his Slide Divers on 25# Mono line using 20# Leaders (Important that the Leader is 5#’s lighter test than the main line to keep from losing gear).

To set up a Slide Diver, run the main line through the slide diver latch loop and the main diver body. Add a bead and then tie the main line to a barrel swivel. The bead will pro-tect the main line knot at the Barrel swivel from premature breakage.

Dave said some guys stop running Slide Divers because over time they may start to creep. The Surgical tubing in the latching mechanism gets grooved. Dave added that you just need to be patient. A quick fix is to rotate the tub-ing so that a different side is in contact w/ the line. Tubing replacement is not difficult.

Any questions, give Dave a call (419) 343-6567, or E-Mail ([email protected]), as he is more than willing to share information. For more information on Slide Diver Rigging options, be sure to visit www.slidediver.com.

The photo above should serve as a testament to the effective-

ness of the slide diver program; a 12.3 pound steelhead! The

red arrows in the photo below show worn surgical tubing.

The illustration above shows the rigging of a slide diver.

Tied by Kim Benbow, from a pattern by Rich Merlino, former Fishing Manager at Royal Oak Orvis.

This pattern, tied in sizes 6, 8 or 10 is a long time producer for anglers fishing rivers and creeks in Michigan. Rich in-

vented this pattern mainly to imitate the Hex nymph found throughout the state, but can also pass for a small baitfish

stripped or swung. This burrowing mayfly has a two-year lifespan during which it may shed its exoskeleton more than

30 times sometimes growing up to 40 mm in length – a tasty morsel. Will catch Bass, Pike, Salmon and Steelhead – dead

-drifted, swung or stripped.

Hook: Orvis 1641 or any strong down eye nymph hook (1xshort)

Thread: Tan 6/0

Tail:Tan/Brown barred rabbit strip

Eyes: Black plastic dumbbell

Flash: Mirage tinsel

Shellback: Turkey tail fibers treated with SOFTEX or Dave’s flexament.

Hackle: Tan Hen soft hackle

Dubbing: Cream spectrablend or icedub.

1. Tie in eyes. Tie in the tip of the tail behind the eyes so that about a hook shank length of fur extends over the hook

bend. This gives some bulk to the thorax.

Featured Fly Pattern - The Sculpin Hex

21 METRO WEST STEELHEADERS

Preparing the materials:

Turkey: Paint a little softex or flexament onto the upper and lower surfaces of the lighter fibers of the turkey tail and let dry. Snip

out a slip of fibers a little wider than the desired thickness of the thorax; this allows the shellback to cover the sides of the fly partly

also.

Hen Hackle: select a feather that has barbules an appropriate leg-length match for the size of fly you are tying. Remove the fluff at

the base of the feather and any barbules that are too long – try to match the width to the space between the tie in point and the eyes.

Stroke the feathers horizontally and snip the tip to give a tie in point.

3. a) Dub the thorax up to and around the eyes. Pull over the thorax and tie in front of the eyes: b) -the hackle; c) -the shell

back; and d) -the flash. e) Whip finish the head

4. Treat with Loon Hardhead or Sally Hansen’s “Tough As Nails”. If you allow a little to bleed into the hackle often it will harden

the barbules into “leg” shapes. You can also help it along with a dubbing needle.

MSSFA Board of Directors Meeting - 21May2014 Minutes MWS Attendees: Henry Nabors, Eric Braden

Speaker: Project Fish Funding, Dr. Howard Tanner & Mark Stephens of Project Fish: Howard Tanner gave an update on “Project Fish”. Mark Stephen’s has procured funding for Project Fish over the past 17 years,

through grants 1 to 2 years at a time. Presently Project Fish has secured funding through September, but the fourth quarter is un-

certain at present. Howard is looking for contacts to start a privately funded endowment that will be self-sufficient from future

interest. 80-100 donation solicitation letters have been written to date. Mark Stephen’s is concerned that there won’t be stewards

for the waters in the future, as many adults today don’t know how to fish. Project Fish assists with Salmon in the Class Room fish

releases, as well as “How To” Fishing seminars. At the first seminar the child gets a fishing rod and is exposed to how to fish a

local location. The second seminar is held a different location and the third is held at another location, along w/ instruction on fish

cleaning and preparation. Another seminar is the Dr. Bill Earl Program where adults learn to fish with their kids, so they will go

fishing again in the future. Another seminar is based upon stream bank erosion. There is also a Grand Parents program, who then

go out and buy boats to take their Grand Kids fishing. Project fish works to have multiple contacts w/ each child. The thought be-

ing the more contact you have, the better chance for success in the child becoming a fisherman for life. Donations are to be sub-

mitted to Michigan State University and are tax deductible. Checks are to be made out to Michigan State University, w/ a note on

the memo line “Project Fish”. Donations can be made on line at Projectfish.org. Donations can also be made in Memory of a loved

one, or reoccurring pledges can be made for years in advance.

Financial Report, Jim Vander Maas: reported on GLSFN (Hand out provided): CPA Costs have been cut in half using Quick-

Books accounting software. A barter account has been set up receive items for trade. Cash for ads is at 70% w/ 30% for trade outs.

This is a 180 degree turnaround from the past. Contracts have been re-established for trade outs to cash. Trade out ads have in-

creased by 20%. Our Club members need to use the coupon codes when ordering product. Our advertisers use those codes to track

interest and future advertising expenditures. Jim Vander Maas has started a semi-annual procedures review, as well as quarterly

financial audits. Bonnie Eade is assembling a procedures manual to provide direction, as people leave.

Executive Directors Report, Dennis Eade: [Hand out submitted] Refer to 6/16/14 MWS E-Mail for details

Presidents Report Ken Merckel: a) April of 2016 will be the 50th Anniversary of salmon eggs arrival in Michigan, b) The Lake

Huron Research vessel, the “Howard Tanner” is on schedule, c) Ken spoke w/ MDOT for gas tax info (hand out provided). Hand

out shows comparisons of what we pay vs. other great lakes states, d) (33) Steel headers volunteered as legislative contacts. Den-

nis Eade sent out an E-Mail last week requesting we contact our legislators to support the Senate passed SB878, as it progresses

into the House.

Membership Report, Greg Gumbrecht: MSSFA membership through 4/30/14 is at 1500.

Committee Reports, Ken Merckel: Lake Committees: a) There were 135 Million walleyes in Lake Erie back in the 80’s. There

are 17 Million today. The limit will remain at 5 fish for this year, but there are concerns with decreased population. Perch and

walleye populations are currently at the low end of data recorded for the past 35 years; b) Saginaw Bay has 2 trap nets off Gravely

Shoal & 7 in the bay. The Buoys have been pulled off. The nets have been tied closed, but couldn’t be removed. If you see a rope

w/ an orange tag, stay away and call a DNR Officer. c) Ken gave an update on the fish plant numbers for Lake Huron and request-

ed the heads be sent in for any adipose clipped Atlantic salmon, as the data is needed. d) The Jordan River hatchery has received

the funding to raise herring (ciscos). Ken added that the Hatchery folks are going to Finland to learn how to raise cisco’s. e) Wall-

eye are eating all the young perch in Saginaw Bay (Predation is the reason for loss of perch population in Lake Huron). f) Wiscon-

sin wants herring to plant in Lake Michigan. Bloaters from Lake Michigan are being planted in Lake Ontario to supplement Ale-

wives. Herring stay on the reef they were spawned. Michigan is looking at the Artadye-Artadye strain of herring. g) Ken men-

tioned that it is easy to identify Atlantic Salmon. There are no dots on the tail and three dots on the gill covers. You can “tail” an

Atlantic Salmon and a Brown Trout you cannot. Lake Huron Atlantics will have Fin clips and all heads need to be turned in (They

Include Hatchery identification nose chips). h) Jim Vander Mass reported on Lake Michigan: The little Manistee weir breached

this spring due to high water. The Steel head egg take was completed in one day. I) From the new license increases there is 1 mil-

lion dollars in grants available for habitat improvements (8 Million dollars’ worth of grant requests were received). Fishing Gear

sales have dropped, while Fishing License sales are steady. j) 175,000 Lake Trout fingerlings are to be received from Wisconsin

this Fall. Half are to be sent to Grand Haven and the other half go to Lake Huron. k) Jim Vander Mass mentioned that the Predator

Prey ratio will be the new model for determining number of future plants vs. the Red Flag Method. Jim is not in favour of using

the new model until information is available on plants vs. reproduction. l) The Charter Boat Association is pushing for a (3) King

Limit to reduce trip times & increase # of trips. Charter Boats are not taxed in Michigan to take people fishing. The LMAC is

made up of 33% Charter Boat Association members, not many Steelhead fisherman are let in. There are social vs. science issues at

MSSFA Board of Directors Meeting - 21May2014 Minutes (Continued) hand. m) Gerry Sickon reported on the Lake Erie / Lake St. Clair Citizens Fishery Advisory Committee: [Hand out submitted]

Refer to 6/16/14 MWS E-Mail for details. CWRSC (Cold Water Resource Steering Committee): Dennis Eade gave a report [Hand

out submitted] Refer to 6/16/14 MWS E-Mail for details. Upper Peninsula Brook Trout limit surveys indicated that 50% want it to

remain at 5 and the other half want to daily limits to increase to 7 fish. Five Streams were selected for the 7 Fish limit increase,

over the next two years. The MDNR determined that most of the input received came from Brian Creek. Daytime fishing pressure

is low in both the U.P. and Lower. Most all stream fishing is done early and at night. WWRSC (Warm Water Resource Steering

Committee): Senate Bill 869 only needs NRC Approval once and will pass.

Old Business: a) Vendor Solicitation: Ken Merckel summarized that all Chapters should respect each other’s events and not solic-

it vendors, unless a courtesy call is made to the event Chairman prior to the Show/Event. Vendors should be solicited at your own

shows. Greg Gumbrecht added that this should apply to Tournaments as well. Including solicitation of members for your club at

another Chapters event. Ken indicated that a write up will be developed and sent out to the MSSFA Chapters. Greg Added that

their March Show expenses were up and revenue down, therefore they were rescinding on the $3,000 Tribal Negotiations match-

ing fund pledge. b) Abandoned nets Meeting w/ Director Creagh: Jim Vander Maas reported that In White Hall, the Law Enforce-

ment Division checked for old nets, only finding remnants (No idea where they are). It is believed that they are in pieces near the

bottom. The Associated Tribe has hired a contractor to pull them, but has yet to locate any to remove.

New Business: a) Saginaw Valley Chapter Status: The SVS Chapter has dissolved. A few reaming members have joined the Flint

Chapter. There were no assets to return to the State organization. b) Traverse City Area Outreach: Henry Nabors presented a peti-

tion for Chapter recognition (Unanimously approved). Henry then submitted the TCAS By-Laws for approval (Unanimously ap-

proved), c) MSSFA Life Membership: Jim Vander Mass made a motion that a MSSFA Lifetime memberships be presented to Jim

Johnson (Unanimously Approved). Jim added that Lifetime memberships have been awarded to Howard Tanner and recipients of

the Howard A. Tanner Award. The memberships have been helpful in keeping in contact with past award winners.

tourney will be held the 2nd Saturday in June for ~85 Vets (Boats are needed to get everyone to the fish). Holland: The Michigan
