THE INTRODUCTORY RITES

Solemn Entrance of the Bridal Couple

The marriage rite fittingly begins with the solemn entrance of the bride and bridegroom. In the procession to the altar, the ministers march first, followed by the officiating priest who leads the bridal couple and their attendants to the chapel according to the local custom, they may be escorted by at least their parents and the two (2) witnesses. The entourage then will take their respective assigned seat in the chapel.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People:

Priest:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

The priest, deacon, or other minister may very briefly introduce the Mass of the day and the wedding celebration.

Dear Dom and Aylah, God is love and has, in some mysterious way, drawn you together in love. But God leaves you free to make that love grow or to let it wither and die. The Lord will help you Dom and Aylah to forge a future for your love, if you do your share, when you stand firm to the commitment to love and honor one another in good times and bad, in poverty and prosperity, in sickness and in health, for better and for worse, in the covenant which you are about to seal.

Brothers and sisters, let us call into mind our sins to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

On their wedding night, Tobiah arose from bed and said to his wife, “sister, get-up. Let us pray and beg our Lord to have mercy on us and to

grant us deliverance.” Sarah got up, and they started to pray and beg that deliverance might be theirs. They began with these words: “Blessed are you, o God of our fathers, praised be your name forever and ever. Let the heavens and all your creation praise you forever. You made Adam and you gave him his wife Eve to be his help and support; and from these two the human race descended. You said it is not good for the man to be alone; let us make him a partner like himself.’ Now, Lord, you know that I take this wife of mine not because of lust, but for a noble purpose. Homily

After the Gospel, the priest gives a homily drawn from the sacred text. He speaks about the mystery of Christian marriage, the dignity of wedded love, the grace of the sacrament and the responsibilities of married people, keeping in mind the circumstances of this particular marriage.

After the homily (or exhortation) all stand, also the spouses, and the priest addresses the couple with, these or similar words.

V: Dearly beloved Dom and Aylah, you are here today to seal your love with an eternal bond before the Church. I assure you of the prayers

of our community that God may pour his abundant blessing on your love and help you to carry out the duties of the married state.

The addresses the community:

V: And you, dear brothers and sisters, may I ask you to help them with your prayers and accept them as a new couple in our Christian community.

V: May I now ask you to answer truthfully the following questions.

Now the Priest questions them about their freedom of choice, faithfulness to each other, and the acceptance and upbringing of children:

Aylah, did you come here of your own free will to bind yourself forever in the love and service of your husband?

To the Bridegroom:

Dom, did you come here of your own free will to bind yourself forever in the love and service of your wife?

Are you both ready to raise as good Christians the children whom God will give you?

Exchange of Consent

V: Dom and Aylah, since you wish to contract holy matrimony, please join your right hands and express your intention before God and His Church.

They join their right hands.

First, the priest asks the bride:

Aylah, do you take Dom here present, as your lawful husband according to the rite of our holy Mother, the Church?

Aylah:

Yes, I do.

Priest:

Do you give yourself to him as your wife?

Aylah:

Yes, I do.

Do you accept him as your lawful husband?

Then the priest asks the bridegroom:

Dom, do you take Aylah here present, for your lawful wife according to the rite of our holy Mother, the Church?

In the case of validation, the second and third questions are optional.

Confirmation of the Marriage Bond

V: And I, by the authority of the Church, calling on all those present here as witnesses, confirm and bless the bond of marriage which you have sealed. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

R: Amen.

Blessing of the Arrhae and Rings

V: We shall now bless your arrhae and rings.

V: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R: He made heaven and earth.

V: Let us pray.

Bless O Lord, your servant Dom and Aylah with sufficiency of material possessions which these arrhae symbolized so that they may use them to attain eternal life. Through Christ our Lord.

R: Amen.

V: Let us pray.

Bless O Lord, these rings so that your servant Dom and Aylah who wear them may ever live in mutual love and in unbroken loyalty. Through Christ our Lord.

R: Amen.

Then the priest sprinkles the arrhae and the rings with holy water. Even though the rings and arrhae are used in other weddings, and therefore, have already been blessed are not, on that account, to be omitted. They are intended for the contracting parties rather than for the objects blessed.

Giving of the Wedding Rings and the ArrhaeThe priest picks up the wedding rings from the tray and say:

V: Now give these rings to one another, and repeat after me:

The groom takes the brides ring from the priest and puts it on the bride’s ring finger. It is a very old custom in the Philippines to wear the weddings of the bride and groom on the right hand ring finger. The groom recite after the priest:

Groom: Aylah, wear this ring as a sign of my love, loyalty and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Then the bride takes the grooms ring from the priest and puts it on the groom’s ring finger, reciting after the priest:

Bride: Dom, wear this ring as a sign of my love, loyalty and fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The groom now takes the arrhae in both hands; the bride places her cupped hands under the hands of the groom. Then the groom transfers the arrhae in the cupped hands of the bride saying:

Groom: Aylah, I give you these arrhae as a pledge of my dedication to your welfare. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thereafter, the bride places the arrhae on the tray held by a server (bearer).

General Intercession

V: God is present in the midst of our celebration. In faith, let us now pray for Dom and Aylah as well as for all people of God that we may all live together in God’s love. In every petition we say:

Lord, graciously hear us.

V: For Dom and Aylah that God will bless their marriage with children and blissful life, let us pray to the Lord:

V: For their parents that God, the Father Almighty, will reward them a hundred fold for bring-up their children, whom God has entrusted to them, as they are now, let us pray to the Lord:

V: For their families and friends that they continue to love, help and pray for one another, let us pray to the Lord:

V: For our Church, the spouse of the risen Christ, that our faithfulness to the Gospel of love may make us the holy people of God, let us pray to the Lord:

V: For our nation and for all nations of the world, that the Spirit of God’s love may reign over all the earth, let us pray to the Lord:

V: For the poor, sick and the dying that through the love, mercy, and compassion of God they may see hope in the restoration of their health and wealth, let us pray to the Lord:

V: For our departed love ones that the risen Lord, Jesus Christ, will bring salvation to their souls and life eternal in the

Kingdom of God, our Lord and Creator, let us pray to the Lord:

V: Gracious Father, Author of love, hear our prayers for Dom and Aylah. Be with them in their new life together so that their marriage may be a living sacrament of your loving presence in our midst. We offer these prayers in the name of your Son, your love to incarnate, Jesus Christ.

Profession of Faith or Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

When all these has been done, the Offertory Song begins.

Preparation of the Gifts

Meanwhile, the ministers place the corporal, the purificator, the chalice, the pall, and the Missal on the altar.

It is desirable that the faithful express their participation by making an offering, bringing forward bread and wine for the celebration of the Eucharist and perhaps other gifts to relieve the needs of the Church and of the poor.

The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

Priest:

Blessed are You, Lord of all creation, for through Your goodness we have received the bread we offer You: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.

Then he places the patent with the bread on the corporal. If, however, the Offertory Song is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

People:

Blessed be God Forever.

The Deacon, or the Priest, pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly:

Priest:

By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our

humanity.

The Priest then takes the chalice and holds its slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

Priest:

Blessed are You, Lord God of all creation, for through Your goodness we have received the wine we offer You; fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink.

Then he places the chalice on the corporal. If, however, the Offertory Song is not sung, the Priest may speak these words aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

People:

Blessed be God Forever.

After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

Priest:

With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by You, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in Your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God.

If appropriate, he also incenses the offerings, the cross, and the altar. A Deacon or other minister then incenses the Priest and the people.

Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands saying quietly:

Priest:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Standing at the middle of the altar, facing the people, extending and then joining his hands, he says:

Priest:

Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.

The people then will rise and reply:

People:

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and the glory of His name, for our good and the good of all His Church.

Prayer over the Offerings

Then the Priest, with hands extended, say the Prayer over the Offerings:

Priest:

Receive, we pray, O Lord, the offering made on the occasion of this sealing of the sacred bond of Marriage, and just as your goodness is its origin, may you providence guide its course. Through Christ our Lord.

Preface of the Wedding

V: The Lord be with you.

R: And with your spirit.

V: Lift up your hearts.

R: We lift them up to the Lord.

V: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

R: It is right and just.

V: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God.

For you have forged the covenant of marriage as a sweet yoke of harmony and an unbreakable bond of peace, so that the chaste and fruitful love of holy Matrimony may serve to increase the children you adopt as Your own.

By Your providence and grace, O Lord, You accomplish the wonder of this twofold design: that, while the birth of children brings beauty to the world, their rebirth in Baptism gives increase to the Church, through Christ our Lord.

Through him, with the angels and all the Saints, we sing the hymn of your praise, as without end we acclaim:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blesses is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Eucharistic Prayer II

The Priest, with hands extended says:

Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Holy Spirit upon them like the dewfall. . . .

He joins his hands and make the Sign of the Cross once over the bread and the chalice together saying:

. . .So that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

He joins his hands.

Priest:

At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion

He takes the bread and, holding it slightly above the altar, continues:

He took the bread and, giving You thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said:

The Priest bows slightly:

Take this all of you, and eat it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you.

The Priest shows the consecrated host to the people, places it again on the paten, and genuflects in adoration.

After this, he continues:

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

The Priest taking the chalice and, holding it slightly raised above the altar, continues:

He took the chalice and, once more giving You thanks, he gave it to his disciples, and said:

The Priest takes the chalice and the paten with the host and, raising both he says:

The Communion Rite

After the chalice and paten have been set down, the Priest, with hands joined, says:

Priest:

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, let us all recite the Lord’s Prayer:

The Priest extends his hands and, together with the people, continues:

Our Father, who art in heave, holy be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Nuptial Blessing

The Priest, with hands joined, calls upon those present to pray saying:

Priest:

Dear brothers and sisters, let us humbly pray to the Lord that on this event his servants, now married in Christ, he may mercifully pour out the blessing of his grace and make of one in love (by the sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood) those he has joined by a holy covenant.

And all pray in silence for a while.

Then the priest, with hands extended over the bride and bridegroom, continues:

Priest:

O God, who by your mighty power created all things out of nothing, and when You had set in place the beginning of the universe, formed man and woman in Your own image, making the woman and inseparable helpmate to the man, that they might no longer be two (2), but one flesh, and taught that what You were pleased to make one must never

be divided.

O God, by whom woman is joined to a man and the companionship they had in the beginning is endowed with one blessing not forfeited by original sin, nor washed away by the flood. Look now with favor on these servants of Yours, joined in Marriage, who ask to be strengthened by your blessing. Send down on them the grace of the Holy Spirit and pour Your love into their hearts, that they may remain faithful in the Marriage covenant.

May the grace of love and peace abide in your daughter Aylah, and let her always follow the example of those holy women whose praises are sung in the Scriptures. May her husband entrust his heart to her, so that, acknowledging her as his equal and his joint heir to the life of grace, he may show her due honor and cherish her always with the love that Christ has for his Church.

And now, Lord, we implore you, may these servants of Yours hold fast to the faith and keep your commandments; made one in flesh, may they bear true witnesses to Christ before all; (may they be blessed with children and prove themselves virtuous parents. Who live to see their children’s children).

And grant that, reaching at last together the fullness of years for which they hope, they may come to the life of blessed in the Kingdom of heaven. Through Christ our Lord.

The people will reply:

People:

Amen.

The Priest, turned towards the people, extending and then joining his hands, adds:

Priest:

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

The people will reply:People:

And with your spirit.

Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Priest, adds:Priest:

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

Then the bride and bridegroom and all present offer on another a sign, in keeping with local customs, that expresses peace, communion and charity.

Then the Priest takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in the chalice, saying quietly:

Priest:

May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who received it.

Meanwhile the following is sung or said:

Choir: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Then the Priest, with hands joined, say quietly:

Priest:

May the receiving of your Body and Blood, Lord Jesus Christ, not bring me to judgment and condemnation, but through your loving mercy be for my protection in mind and body and a healing remedy.

The Priest genuflects, takes the host and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or above the chalice, while facing the people, says aloud:

Priest:

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

And together with the people he adds once:

All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

While the Priest is receiving the Body of Christ, the Communion Chant begins.

Choir:

When the distribution of Communion is over, the Priest or a Deacon or an acolyte purifies the patent over the chalice and also the chalice itself.

While he carries out the purification, the Priest says quietly:

What has passed our lips as food, O Lord, may we passes in purity of heart, that what has been given to us in time may be our healing for eternity.

Communion Antiphon – Eph 5:25-27

Priest:

Christ loved the Church and handed himself over for her, to present her a holy and spotless bride for himself. (E.T. Alleluia)

Suggested Prayer for Bride and Bridegroom after Holy Communion.

Bride and Bridegroom:

O God, our Farther in heaven, we now kneel before you very happy, but somewhat nervous. We know that You brought us together in the beginning, helped our love grow and at this moment are with us in a special way. We ask that You stay by our side in the days ahead. Protect us from anything which might harm this marriage give us courage when burdens come our way teach us to forgive one another when we fail.

Bridegroom:

I ask from You the assistance I need to be a good husband and father. Never let me take my wife for granted or forget she needs to be loved. If You bless us with children, I promise to love them, to care for them, to give them the best possible example.

Bride:

I ask from You the assistance I need to be a good wife and mother. May I never forget how important my husband’s work is for my happiness, or fail to give him encouragement. If You bless me with motherhood, I promise to give myself totally to the children, even to the point of stepping aside when they must walk alone.

Bride and Bridegroom:

We ask, finally, that in our old age we may love one another and cherish each other as deeply and as much as we do this very moment. May You grant these wishes we offer through your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Prayer after Communion

Then, standing at the altar or at the chair and facing the people, with hands joined, the Priest says:

Priest:

Let us pray.

All pray in silence with the Priest for a while.

Then the Priest, with hands extended, say the Prayer after Communion:

Priest:

By the power of this sacrifice, O Lord, accompany with Your loving favor what in Your providence You have instituted, so as to make of one heart in love those You have already joined in this holy union (and replenished with one Bead and the one Chalice). Through Christ our Lord.

After praying the after-communion the long veil and the yugal are removed by the friends of the couple.
