Transverse‑Drop Structures/WeirsTransverse works dissipate energy and therefore contr ibute to the stabi l izat ion of the bed material . Gabion weir and drop structures are used to control high energy hydraul ic f lows, carrying sol ids or sediments. These structures alter the hydraul ic prof i le of the f low, reducing its energy and capacity to erode unti l a balanced condit ion is reached. The type and configuration of the weir is dependent upon hydraul ic and topographic condit ions. Maccaferr i offers design software for channels, longitudinal and transverse structures. This enables the designer to rapidly perform prel iminary hydraul ic studies to evaluate the bank protect ion or the transverse weir required.

Maccaferr i has over 130 years of expert ise in r iver and stream protect ion, hydraul ic works, and r iver training. For demanding, high energy f lows, Reno Mattresses and gabions have always been the main component of r iver works such as l inings, weirs, groins, s i l ls and energy dissipation basins.

Maccaferr i also provides solutions for l ining and containment works for reservoirs, mine st i l l ing basins, canals, attenuation and storage ponds as wel l as for golf courses and agriculture.

The canalization of a water course involves constructing a channel with a cross-section. This can be used to control the meandering of a river through a built up area, or in the vicinity of infrastructures. Where channels transport clean water f low through polluted ground, or vice-versa, the channels may be l ined to make them impermeable.

Reno Mattresses and gabions, together with synthetic or biodegradable erosion protection mats, are often applied to the banks and, if required, to the channel bed to maintain the channel function.

Modify ing soi l s lope prof i les beyond their natural angle of repose, can lead to s lope instabi l i ty . This s i tuat ion can ar ise when reducing the footpr int of a new highway embankment, or to gain development area on a s loping s i te.

Maccaferr i geogrid reinforcements, used in conjunct ion with the soi l , enable the soi l to perform better than i t would in i ts unreinforced state. Maccaferr i geogrids enable soi ls to accommodate greater loads and stand at steeper angles. The geogrids are laid horizontal ly within the compacted soi l mass during construct ion, reinforcing i t due to their high tensi le strength, low strain and good interact ion with the soi l .Maccaferr i re inforced soi l s lopes and MSE wal ls are ideal

for soi ls which have poor bearing capacity; the structure accommodates dif ferent ial sett lement far better than more r igid solut ions. This is also a great benef i t in seismic zones.

Our unsurpassed range of geogrid reinforcements, including MacGrid®

WG, Paragrid and Paral ink with strengths up to 1,350kN/m (92,504 lb/ft ) , maximizes the opportunity to reuse on-site mater ials as backf i l l to a reinforced s lope. This saves on the export and import of mater ials f rom the s i te, embracing sustainabi l i ty and reducing pol lut ing truck movements. With over 30 years of continuous use around the world, Paral ink is one of the most tr ied-and-tested geogrids in existence.

Gravity Walls

Retaining Walls & Soil Reinforcement

The stabi l i ty of mass gravity retaining wal ls rel ies upon the structural integr ity of the units, and their f i l led mass, to support or contain unstable earth s lopes. In order to select the optimum Maccaferr i retaining wal l solut ion, key considerat ions include:

• The geotechnical parameters of the retained and foundation soi ls

• The presence of water and hydrostat ic loads

• External loads from structures and l ive or seismic loads

• The s impl ic i ty and speed of construct ion

Cert i f ied by many authorit ies worldwide and manufactured in compliance with ASTM A975, Maccaferr i double twist mesh gabions offer strength and high drainage capacity. Long-term stabi l i ty and cl ient reassurance are provided as these structures are capable of absorbing dif ferent ial sett lement and deformations.

Maccaferr i gabions are avai lable with a range of corrosion protect ion coatings to suit expected exposure condit ions and design l i fe requirements.

Cost savings through the reuse of on-site mater ial with geogrids can be substantial on a project. Furthermore, combinations of geogrid types to bui ld ‘hybr id structures’ often create more eff ic ient designs and faster construct ion compared to tradit ional techniques.

Maccaferr i Terramesh®, Terrawal l® and Green Terramesh® combine the f lexibi l i ty of soi l re inforcement with the benef i t of a modular system. With

factory assembled face elements, and pre-determined dimensions, these systems s ignif icant ly reduce on-site instal lat ion t imes.

Maccaferr i ’s reinforced soi l s lopes and MSE wal l systems are HITEC evaluated and trusted to support roadways, rai lway embankments and propert ies around the globe.

Roads & PavementsRoads & Pavement Reinforcement

Reinforcement technology within roads and pavements creates a more dynamic system among the variables in the environment. Reinforcement increases the service l i fe of roads and highways

by reducing fat igue, ref lect ive, thermal and sett lement cracking.

Reinforcement rel ieves and redistr ibutes stress concentrations

in the pavement:

• Reducing ref lect ive cracking into overlays

• Improving load distr ibution

• Improving the bearing capacity of the pavement structure

• Increasing resistance to rutt ing and shoving

The capabi l i ty of the reinforcement to withstand loads wil l

depend both on the type of reinforcement and the surrounding

bituminous material . Discontinuit ies wil l inevitably lead to

cracks in the asphalt.

Maccaferr i offers a wide range of asphalt pavement reinforcement

products from Road Mesh and double twisted hexagonal

steel wire mesh, used to structural ly reinforce pavements, to

MacGrid® geogrids and MacTex® geocomposite fabrics. With the extensive product l ine at Maccaferr i , f lexibi l i ty is our strength.

Every construct ion s i te poses unique chal lenges due to soi l condit ions. The solut ion to chal lenges in the construct ion of unbound roads, including forestry tracks, mine haul roads, construct ion s i tes and parking areas, l ies within the appropriate use of geosynthet ics within the unbound layers:

• Increase the load bearing capacity of the structure• Increase the l i fe of the structure• Reduce the thickness of the granular layer• Reduce rutt ing

The Maccaferr i in-house design team uti l izes a combination of c lassical design methods and state-of-the-art software to select the appropriate Maccaferr i geogrids and geotext i les to meet project demands, opt imizing the structure and cost eff ic iency.

MacDrain

The ever- increasing value of space requires a sound solution for drainage control. Poor drainage control within a structure or surrounding ground can weaken the foundation or lead to roadway closures.

The select ion of an appropriate drainage solution depends on a number of factors:

• The overburden expected • The expected f low discharge required • The type of material/soi l to be drained (clean, contaminated, etc.) • Hydraul ic gradient • Dimensions of the area to be drained

MacDrain® geocomposites are designed to replace cost ly tradit ional drainage materials such as gravels and sands. Geotexti les, attached to the drainage core on one or both sides, stop the materials or soi ls being drained from clogging the drainage core or col lect ion pipes.

Sinkhole RemediationOne of the most chal lenging situations in the geotechnical domain is the sinkhole. Some areas are subject to the sudden formation of cavit ies or natural depressions caused by mining subsidence, or where natural voids can occur. In these circumstances, i t is necessary to introduce innovative reinforcement, typical ly at the base of the embankment, to prevent the sudden fai lure of the foundation or s inkholes.

That innovative reinforcement is Maccaferr i ’s high strength, low strain Paral ink. This reinforcement meets the most str ingent design cr iter ia and has been used successful ly for many years in s inkhole appl icat ion. Maccaferr i ’s expert technical team is ready to help develop a solution for s inkhole chal lenges.

Rockfall ProtectionSimple DraperyMaccaferr i ’s S imple Rockfal l Drapery Systems are used to control fal l ing debris on s lopes, preventing the debris f rom fal l ing onto roads, rai lways or areas where loss of l i fe or property damage is possible. As surface debris loosens and fal ls , i t is forced to work i ts way between the mesh/cable panels of the drapery system and the ground surface unti l i t reaches the base of the s lope where i t can be removed.

Maccaferr i s imple rockfal l drapery systems are constructed by suspending double twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh and/or cable net panels f rom an upslope up to downslope on the protected area. The panels are usual ly draped freely over the ground surface to extend to a specif ied length downslope. The panels may be fastened to the base of the s lope in order to contain fal len debris.

Secured DraperyProtect ion against rockfal l is f requently carr ied out with mesh facing and patterned nai ls ; this system is known as Secured Drapery. Secured drapery can also be referred to as pinned drapery, or surf ic ial consol idat ion. Secured drapery is aimed at improving rock face stabi l i ty .

The stabi l i ty of the exposed rock face, reinforced with nai ls , is obtained by the contr ibut ion of steel mesh. The funct ion of the mesh in the secured drapery system is to stabi l ize the mater ial between the nai ls by l imit ing rock movement. The steel mesh facing has a f lexible structural behavior, within the l imits of i ts intr insic deformabi l i ty, and works in unison with the passive act ion of the nai ls .

Secured drapery intervention is typical ly recommended where the number of unstable blocks is too large and/or the maintenance cost is too high or the locat ion is di f f icult to access. This al lows the nai l ing of each s ingle rock, so that the surf ic ial port ion of the s lope can be compared to a continuous unstable thickness.

Barriers/Catch FencesBarr iers/Catch Fences are posit ioned to intercept and stop fal l ing

rocks and boulders. Maccaferr i ’s rockfal l fences are suppl ied in “kit

form” for a specif ic height, length and energy absorpt ion capacity.

Maccaferr i suppl ies rockfal l barr iers/catch fences with energy

absorpt ion capacit ies of 500kJ to 5,000kJ, featur ing a unique,

compression energy absorpt ion device. This s imple, yet effect ive

device, maintains i ts performance throughout the design l i fe of the

structure. Unl ike tradit ional ‘ f r ict ion brake’ devices, Maccaferr i ’s

compression tube brake is very easy to visual ly inspect as i t

progressively crushes as the fence is impacted. Also, i t does not

corrode or become clogged with gr i t over the l i fe of the fence,

potential ly reducing the effect iveness of the barr ier .

Debris Flow Barriers

Hybrid Barr iers, or Attenuators, combine rockfal l barr ier technology with the advantages of s imple drapery to form an eff ic ient passive system. The upper sect ion of the rockfal l hybr id barr ier absorbs the energy of the rock impact and the draped mesh guides the rock down the s lope.

The energy of the fal l ing rock is part ial ly diss ipated by the rockfal l hybr id barr ier as i t impacts the mesh panel. The fal l ing rock is then contained and s lowed between the mesh and ground surface as i t continues to fal l towards the bottom of the s lope.

The raised post at the upper sect ion al lows rocks from above to be

caught within the system, providing extra protect ion. Due to lower

maintenance costs, the hybrid barr ier , or rockfal l attenuator, is a cost

effect ive solut ion.

Rockfall ProtectionSoil Nailing

Maccaferr i ’s Soi l Nai l ing is a technique that can be used either as a remedial measure, for unstable natural soi l s lopes, or for steepening new or exist ing soi l s lopes. With soi l nai l ing, the s lope is reinforced by the insert ion of reinforcing steel anchor bars.

Anchors are instal led using dr i l l ing techniques, and are usual ly ful ly grouted and instal led with regular spacing across the s lope face. Surf ic ial stabi l i ty can be achieved by using a f lexible reinforcing mesh, or a r igid concrete revetment may be used to stabi l ize the soi l between the steel plates.

Typical ly this type of system provides global stabi l i ty by improving the soi ls shear strength whi le vegetat ion is establ ished, which provides surface erosion protect ion.

Rockfall EmbankmentsRockfal l Embankments are used to stop rockfal l and debris f rom fal l ing onto roads, rai lways or where there is possible loss of property or l i fe. Maccaferr i ’s rockfal l embankments are made of pre-assembled products such as Green Terramesh®, Terramesh® , gabions or a combination of these products.

This passive system is an ideal solut ion when it is not possible to intercept fal l ing rocks or prevent them from detaching, due to the s lope being too large, or inaccessible.

Often, embankments are made with mechanical ly reinforced earth systems, enabl ing bui lders to use local mater ial , reduce the footpr int of the structure, and create a vegetated embankment face, which minimizes the system’s environmental impact.

The effect iveness of Maccaferr i ’s Terramesh® System goes hand-in-hand with rapid construct ion t ime. The double twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh fascia unit and soi l re inforcement structural e lements are pre-assembled during the manufactur ing process, thereby dramatical ly reducing the number of operat ions performed on-site.

Geological Hazard ProtectionGeological hazards/debris f lows are typical ly mobi le l iquef ied landsl ides containing a var iety of mater ial f rom f ine part ic les to large boulders and tree branches. They are caused by excessive water on s lopes, f rom rainfal l , glacier melts or s imi lar. The l ikel ihood of geological hazards/debris f lows is increased when vegetat ion and other surface protect ion has been removed from vulnerable s lopes, perhaps by wi ldf i re or c lear ing. Geological hazards/debris f lows tend to be channel led by the topography.

Maccaferr i ’s debris f low barr iers are s imi lar to rockfal l barr ier/catch fences, but work in a total ly di f ferent way. The rockfal l barr ier stops rocks with a dynamic load, whereas debris f low barr iers work for both dynamic and stat ic loads. Ring nets are ideal in these structures as they have inherent energy absorpt ion capacity, which reduces the loads that are transferred to the compression brakes.

For wi ldf i re appl icat ions, the barr iers are designed to be in place unti l vegetat ion is re-establ ished on the vulnerable s lopes above. The barr ier can then be removed leaving the foundation intact. They can be reinstal led i f r isks from geological hazards/debris f lows increase in the future.

Avalanche Protection

Snow Net

The inhabitants of mountainous areas have always been affected by the r isk of avalanches. The need to l ive alongside this threat has led to attempts to mit igate the r isk by construct ing intr icate systems of art i f ic ia l structures.

Maccaferr i ’s snow nets are designed to stabi l ize the layer of snow at the potential avalanche detachment zone, thereby preventing the tr igger ing effect of an avalanche.

Mining Solutions

Underground MinesOperat ing underground encompasses the necessary processes and appl icat ions of specif ic techniques to extract valuable minerals. Maccaferr i offers numerous solut ions to l ine tunnels and control the loose and fal l ing debris that can occur during mining operat ions. Depending on the specif ic r isks, these solut ions include double twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh, ParaRib polymer meshes, or f iber reinforced shotcrete.

Open Pit MinesTo maximize extract ion volume and minimize the space for infrastructure, s lopes within open pit mines can be steep, causing mater ial to detach and affect mine safety and operat ions. Maccaferr i addresses this problem with a range of high performance steel meshes and rockfal l catch fences that range from a few ki lojoules to 20,000 kJ.

Crusher WallsMaccaferr i offers reinforced soi l and retaining structure solut ions for crusher and hopper wal ls . Wherever possible, the reuse of on-site structural backf i l l is used with Maccaferr i ’s geogrids for reinforced soi l , reducing costs and mater ial waste. Maccaferr i ’s wal l systems offer vert ical structures with a tough fascia and geogrids that have strengths up to 92,500 lb/ft , accommodating even the heaviest of vehic les.

15

InfrastructureEffect ive access ramps, haul roads, surface water control structures and drainage systems are important to the uninterrupted performance of a mine. Whether a weak haul road requires sub-grade stabi l izat ion with geogrids, an outfal l structure requires erosion protect ion or a run-off ditch needs l in ing, Maccaferr i has a product that can help.

Mine ReclamationThe closure and reinstatement of the ecosystem is one of the most important act iv i t ies in the l i fecycle of the mine.

Maccaferr i offers impermeable capping and drainage systems to prevent surface water f rom enter ing the deposits. The rapid re-establ ishment of vegetat ion and soi l erosion protect ion systems complete c losure operat ions. Maccaferr i ’s wide range of synthet ic and biodegradable soi l stabi l izat ion and erosion protect ion solut ions faci l i tate mine reclamation.

Wirand®

FibroMac™

Compared to tradit ional reinforcement, Wirand® Steel F iber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) can:

• Reduceweakpoints inthes lab• Increasepanels izesbyel iminatingsaw-cuts• Reduces labthickness• Bequicker, saferandcheaperto instal l• Replacetradit ionalreinforcement• Increasethedai lyconstruct ionoutput The cycl ic loading of f loor ing s labs, part icular ly in heavy industr ial appl icat ions, is demanding. The response of the concrete s lab is dependent on the ‘duct i l i ty ’ or ‘ toughness’ of the concrete. Wirand® steel f ibers have a high modulus of elast ic i ty and do not creep over t ime, substantial ly improving the structural ‘e lasto-plast ic’ response of the s lab.

Fibers are one component of the concrete mix, and control of al l const i tuents and processes is important to obtain a perfect result . Using Maccaferr i Wirand® SFRC is s imple:

•Introducef ibers intotheconcretemix•Letthef ibersdistr ibutehomogeneously•Mixingt ime is typical ly 1minutepercubicmeterofconcrete•Includeadmixturestooptimizeworkabi l i ty For smal ler and one-off projects, the f ibers are convenient ly del ivered in pre-weighed packs for deployment direct ly into the concrete mixing truck at the project s i te.

For larger projects, the rate of del ivery and dispersal of f ibers within the concrete matr ix is important due to the short cycles. Maccaferr i ’s ful l range of DOSO f iber dosing systems has been developed to solve the specif ic problems of large s lab f loor ing contractors, pre-cast plants and any ready mix operat ion. These can be stand-alone, or ful ly integrated into the concrete batching plant with the support of our product ion special ists.

Dosage Equipment

Jointless floors Maccaferr i ’s LODIMAC (LOng DIstance MACcaferr i ) system enables f loor panels up to 2,500m2 to be cast without saw-cut joints, great ly increasing design possibi l i t ies and f lexibi l i ty of construct ion.

Superflat floorsWirand® SFRC slabs ful ly comply with the demands of high racking, narrow ais le loads and cr i t ical surface level tolerances as required by the manufacturers of racking systems and load-haul equipment manufacturers.

Pre-Cast Concrete

Wirand®

FibroMac™

Maccaferr i ’s Wirand® steel f ibers and FibroMac™ synthet ic f ibers offer

s ignif icant advantages when used in pre-cast concrete. Customizing the

f iber types and blend, within the concrete mix, to suit the concrete end-

product, br ings many benef i ts. Wirand® Steel F iber Reinforced Concrete

(SFRC) increases the durabi l i ty , duct i l i ty , shear, impact resistance and f i re

resistance of the pre-cast concrete products. Other benef i ts include:

• Reduced complex steel reinforcement detai l ing

• Reduced damage during demoulding

• Reduced damage during handl ing and transportat ion

• Improved freeze-thaw/thermal resistance

• Reduced ear ly-age cracking

• Earl ier demoulding/shorter mould t imes

• More s lender products using less concrete

A major use of Wirand® is in pre-cast concrete segments for tunnel ing

appl icat ions. Whether smal l diameter tunnels for services, or large diameter

for major infrastructure, Maccaferr i can help. Wirand® steel f ibers structural ly

reinforce the segments, in some instances, enabl ing the complete removal of

al l t radit ional steel reinforcement.

FibroMac™ synthet ic f ibers are added to segments in order to dramatical ly

increase the concrete resistance to high temperatures. This reduces explosive

spal l ing and damage to tunnel l in ings exposed to f i re.

Using renowned test ing and research establ ishments, Maccaferr i has

repeatedly ref ined tunnel segment designs through the use of Wirand® steel

f ibers, saving cl ients money on projects. S ignif icant pre-cast operat ions for

products such as pre-cast pipe, sept ic tanks, manholes, and pre-cast steel

decks, have implemented Wirand® steel f ibers & FibroMac™ synthet ic as

reinforcement in their product portfol io.
