From the Headmaster Jesus Christ Superstar Our Musical Jesus Christ Superstar performed to sell out audiences last week in our Performing Arts Centre. The vibrancy and creativity of the production, combined with technical brilliance, made for an incredible evening of theatre. The cast devoted countless hours to learning, rehearsing and perfecting the performance, while developing their characters so astutely. I was impressed to see so many of our students performing at such a professional level on stage. My thanks and congratulations to our Head of Drama, Mr Andrew Stocker, who produced and directed the show, and provided the vision and discipline required to make it come alive. Thank you also to our Director of Music, Mr Ben Bishop and his team who worked so closely with the cast to perfect the musical arrangements. My sincere thanks to all those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in choreography, technical support and costuming. I am also very grateful to the students from Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College who performed superbly and helped to make this such a memorable show. Mid-Year Concert Thursday 24 May, 7.30pm Our Music School is busily finalising their preparations for the Mid Year Concert, to be held next Thursday evening in the Performing Arts Centre. As always, the evening promises to be a most entertaining one. Over 400 of our students in Junior, Middle and Senior School will be performing on the evening. I encourage all members of the school community to support these very talented students. If you do not have tickets, you may register on the waiting list using the following link: https://www.trybooking.com/378954. The William Angliss Dinner Thank you to all the Middle School parents who attended our annual William Angliss Dinner last Tuesday evening in the Camberwell Room. Our guest speaker for the evening was Mr Geoff Ahern, who is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health and a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Master Instructor. Geoff provided an informative presentation about mental health and how we can support our boys in their formative years. I thank our Head of Middle School, Mr Troy Stanley, and our Development Office for organising a most successful and informative evening. The John Mallinson Organ Scholarship The John Mallinson Organ Scholarship was established in 2011 to encourage students to learn the organ. It is named after the founder of the scholarship, Mr John Mallinson, who was Director of Music from 1964 until 1987. It is my pleasure to announce that this year’s recipient is Arman Cakmakcioglu (Year 10). Arman began learning the pipe organ in Year 8 and is a diligent student both musically and academically. Arman has shown enthusiasm and interest in the entire music program since joining our community and the training that this award will provide will enable him to become a fine organist in his own right. He is a worthy winner of the scholarship this year and we congratulate him. ‘Green Day’ Thank you to those who participated in the ‘Green Day’ fundraiser last Friday. The total amount raised was $4,893.75. These funds will go to the Abbotsford Convent Foundation’s Alternative Technology Association and to Beyond Zero Emissions. Camberwell Grammar School Golfer Congratulations to Andrew Zhang (Year 12) who was the best performing CGS Golfer at the recent AGSV competition day held at Spring Valley Golf Course. At yesterday’s Assembly, Andrew was invited to the stage to receive his 2018 Golf Champion medal. Middle SchoolWilliam Angliss DinnerMany thanks to all parents and staff who were able to attend the William Angliss Dinner on Tuesday night. It was a wonderful evening and I am sure that all present gained a lot from hearing Geoff Ahern’s presentation on Mental Health. Geoff shared his expertise in a light-hearted and thought provoking manner, including tips and challenges to support our boys in their formative years.

CyberiaAs a part of the PSD Program, Ms Dubberley and Mr Burke organised a ‘road-show’ Cyber-Safety presentation that included a series of skits, introducing our Year 7 boys to some of the challenges and solutions around cyber safety. I was extremely proud of the way the boys engaged in the presentation. Their questioning at the end, in particular, demonstrated their maturity and intellect of this particular cohort.

Year 8 Projec10On Wednesday, Mrs Sally Treacy visited our Year 8 Assembly to launch Projec10 for 2018. Last year, over 180 students from Camberwell Grammar School and several local girls’ schools participated in this entrepreneur program aimed at developing critical thinking, social justice and team work. Early signs suggest that this will be the biggest year to date. Year 8 students are encouraged to sign up at the Middle School Office as soon as possible.

Junior SchoolMother Nature controlled the show at last Friday’s Mother’s Day Breakfast as she gifted us with rain and chilly conditions. Our Friends of Norge Team took it all in their stride and took advantage of the Camberwell Room to gather in cosy conditions and celebrate our wonderful mums. It was a delight to see so many mums and sons enjoying the fun and friendship of our special Mother’s Day event. With a scattering of round tables draped in white tablecloths decorated with bouquets of pink roses, and trestle tables laden with egg and bacon muffins, cupcakes, pastries, fresh fruit, The Camberwell Room was perfect for the occasion. What a great way to start the day, and a fine way to remind mums just how special and important they are to us all.The mums were treated to music by the Middle School Stage Band, and at 8.00am all Junior School boys gathered to sing a couple of special songs to their mums. The boys each presented their mum with a lovely gift they had created during their art lessons, which I am sure their mums will enjoy for years to come. Thank you to The Friends of Norge, staff, dads who helped out on the day, and boys who all worked tenaciously to ensure this was a day for mum to remember. Particular thanks must go to Jenny Thurlby, Ivy Lun, Roula Andreopoulos, Isabella Tilley, Atid Page and their hard-working team for giving so generously of their time, energy and creativity. It was a marvellous morning for everyone!

Junior School Soiree Tuesday 5 June, 6.00pmThe Term 2 Junior School Soiree will be held on Tuesday 5 June at 6.00pm in the Music and Movement Centre. Instrumentalists who wish to perform in the Soiree should have collected a form from the M and M Centre. You may also download the form via the Junior School Music page. Details must be completed by your son’s instrumental teacher, as it is important that music teachers assist their students in their preparation. Completed forms must be returned to Mrs Helen Thomas by Thursday 24 May.

Jump Rope for HeartThis year our school is once again participating in Jump Rope for Heart – a fantastic physical activity and fundraising program by the Heart Foundation that has been running for over 35 years. Since Jump Rope for Heart started in 1983, schools like ours have raised more than $75 million for the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work. Jump Rope for Heart is a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs. Boys from Prep to Year 5 will participate in the skipping activities on Thursday 14 June, 8.40am to 10.30am in the Junior School playground. It is important that you register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising. Stickers and information on how to do this went home in your son’s diary earlier this week. Traditionally, our boys do not receive the online bonus prizes. We have donated the prizes, or a voucher for the total worth of the prizes, to the Migrant Resource Centre in Footscray. Last year they were able to purchase a bike which the children at the centre shared. This a valuable and much appreciated community fundraiser that benefits two worthy causes. Sign your child up for online fundraising by visiting: www.jumprope.org.au.Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!

MusicMid-Year ConcertWe have been overwhelmed by the demand for tickets for our school concert next week, and are delighted to announce that we have extended the seating in the Performing Arts Centre to allow almost 200 more audience members access to the Concert. The team in the music office has been working hard to accommodate all ticket requests on our waiting list, and it is our goal to fit in all parents who wish to see their sons perform next week.If there are any ticket holders that no longer require a ticket, we would be grateful for those families to return/refund their seats using the TryBooking link, or to get in touch with Ms Jessica Doutch [email protected] as soon as possible so we can make those precious tickets available to those on our waiting list. Boys participating in the concert do not require a ticket, and will be allocated seats. We ask that all boys involved in next week’s concert arrive at their designated times and areas, which will be communicated at rehearsals and through Schoology next week. There is no need for boys to arrive earlier than required, as the evening’s schedule has been carefully planned to ensure all musicians and instruments arrive on stage ready for the best possible performance. It has been an exciting moment to see some of our ensembles leave the rehearsal room this week and rehearse on the stage, which only a week ago was filled with cast, sets and choir for Jesus Christ Superstar. My sincere congratulations once again to all those involved in this immense, challenging and moving production. I feel that our school community will remember and cherish this show for many years to come.Ben Bishop, Director of Music

SportWell done to all on a great start to the winter season. It is great to see students enjoying their sport and wearing the correct uniform. I would also like to inform you that if your son is absent on Saturday for you to please email: [email protected] or your teacher/coach directly as soon as possible. Notes given after the event are usually counterproductive to the process. Well done to Taran Rose (Year 7) who was recently selected for Victoria in the Eastern Athletics Baseball Charter.

Sport ReportFirst XI Hockey began their campaign against Ivanhoe last Friday, who had knocked out an undefeated Camberwell in last year’s semifinals. Despite horrid conditions, the boys started strongly, moving the ball cleanly and quickly as they raced to a 4-1 lead. Ivanhoe got back into the contest with two consecutive goals, but the young team kept their heads and regained control of the match. The final result was a 9-4 win, thanks to some good offensive positioning and clinical finishing. Congratulations to Ed Harper (Year 8), Brodie Carswell (Year 8), Jordan Murphy (Year 9) and Michael Donaldson (Year 12) on playing their first game. Ed and Brodie earned themselves this week’s “Play of the Day”, for playing at this level whilst still in Middle School. It was also great to see the 8A, 9A, 10A and Seconds teams record wins on the weekend, highlighting the depth of the Hockey program.First XVIII Football headed to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School (PEGS) last Friday, aiming to improve on last week’s disappointing performance against the premiership favourites. Having to endure gale force winds and torrential rain, Camberwell Grammar School was dominated in the first quarter as they kicked against the breeze, trailing by six goals to one at quarter-time. To their credit, the team competed hard for the rest of the day, managing to keep in touch with their opposition for the remainder of the match, led by Noah Marshallsay and David Augustes (both Year 12). The injury-ravaged side is looking forward to a number of big inclusions this week as they take on Peninsula, but will need to be switched on from the start if they are to give themselves a chance. The 7A side also took on PEGS on Friday, but had much more success, claiming their first victory in Camberwell colours with a 43-point victory. After a shaky start, the boys composed themselves in the second half, helped by Lachlan Harker’s (Year 9) ability to win contested ball, Nicholas Graves’ defensive work and two goals from Harry Thomas.Looking to improve on last round’s draw, First XI Soccer took on a full-strength Marcellin side. The match was a seesawing affair, with both teams having their fair share of opportunities at goal, however, lapses of concentration by Camberwell coupled with Marcellin’s polished efforts, resulted in a 3-0 loss. While this score did not do the team justice, their self-belief is growing and they now turn their attention to this week’s fixture against last year’s premiers, PEGS. Intermediate B was able to hold off a second half Assumption comeback, and ended the match victoriously, six goals to two, with Nima Asgari (Year 10) and Daniel Sunderland (Year 9) leading the way.
