The Last Week of Jesus’ LifeIn the last few days before His crucifixion, Jesus did fewer miracles and concentrated instead on

teaching. He devoted special time to teaching His disciples about His Second Coming. The life andwords of Jesus provoked different responses in those who knew Him. On Palm Sunday, multitudes ofpeople pursued and honored Him as He entered Jerusalem. But at the same time, many of the chiefpriests and scribes rejected Him and tried to snare Him with their questions. Jesus repeatedly triumphedover the cunning Pharisees, using each of their challenges as an opportunity to further instruct thecrowds about who He really was.

Triumph and ConflictIn Section 1, you will read about Jesus entering into Jerusalem for the last time in His life. In the days

following His entrance into the city, Jesus taught publicly and the common people responded enthusias-tically. They wanted to hear more from Him. They praised Him and received Him as a king. But theleaders of the people resented the popularity of Jesus. They feared that He was undermining their au-thority. Indeed, several of Jesus’ parables exposed these leaders’ hypocrisy and indifference to both Godand the people. Because of this, the scribes and Pharisees planned to trap Jesus into saying somethingwrong so they could accuse Him.

Memory Verse:

“And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, thesame is become the head of the corner?” Luke 20:17

Lesson 1: TRIUMPHAL ENTRY! pp. 2—6

BEFORE CLASS

Scripture Reading: Luke 19:28-44; John 12:20-26

TEACHER MEDITATION

Jesus as the sovereign Creator of both mankind and the grand universe was and is the only true King.He possesses all right to rule over men. However, though He was the Son of God, those whom He hadcreated rejected Him. He had a special relationship with the Jewish people; He was “of them” by birth—their very own kindred. But the Jews rejected Him because He did not come as a king to liberate thempolitically as they expected.

Rejection is probably the cruelest pain that humans can inflict on each other. Perhaps a student todaywill reject your counsel, your authority, or your guidance. Maybe a patron will resent your position of re-sponsibility. Will you decide to die to yourself again and do as Jesus did—forgive, weep, and resolve toshow a merciful spirit?

Follow Jesus’ example today. Take your place with loving compassion and forbearance as He did. Acceptrespect from those who properly give it, and continue to show loving interest in those who do not. Jesus, though He had all authority, laid down His glory for us. None of us has yet laid down as much as He did.

LESSON EMPHASESJesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem– Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem was His right as the King of Israel.– By riding a donkey, Jesus fulfilled prophecy and showed He came in peace.– The crowd recognized Jesus as King and rejoiced in His ministry.

Jesus’ weeping over Jerusalem– Jesus knew the suffering His people would experience because they had rejected Him.– Jesus longed to bring His people peace and to be their Saviour.

The Jews’ lost opportunity– Israel refused to accept Jesus as their Messiah; they rejected God’s greatest gift.– As a result of the Jews having rejected Jesus, Jerusalem would be destroyed in A.D. 70.

Life from death– Jesus died to produce new life in the sinner.– As a kernel of wheat must die to produce a new plant, so we must die to our own wills and

submit to God’s will.

TEACHING THE CLASS

Introduce the LessonDiscuss the following to explain why Jesus, the King of the Jews, rode on a donkey rather than a horse,

a camel, or a chariot.First, Jesus came to His people as the Prince of Peace, not as a warrior on a horse. Secondly, He chose

an untrained foal of a donkey to show His sovereignty over creation. Finally, Jesus’ choice of transporta-tion showed His humility.

Only wealthy travelers and government officials used chariots for travel. Camels were used by mer-chants for traveling across arid lands. Kings rode on horses to display their prestige. Horses, much moreexpensive to care for than camels and donkeys, were considered a luxury. Therefore, the common people

usually made use of theeconomy method—donkeys. Jesus identifiedHimself with the poorand lowly, even thoughHe possessed all authority.

LESSON PLAN

Discuss the Scripturereading (Luke 19:28-44and John 12:20-26). Useas much of the followingas you wish for class dis-cussion. • (Luke 19:28-36) Why

did Jesus ride on adonkey instead of ahorse? (The donkeysymbolized that He hadcome to bring healing, salvation, and peacerather than to rule as amonarch or politicalKing.)

• (Luke 19:42-44)What calamity didthe Jews experiencebecause they rejectedJesus? (They failed torecognize their Messiahand remained unsaved.Later, their beautifulcity and temple wouldbe destroyed.)

• Think of Jesus’ broken heart over the rejectionfrom His own people. What qualities of char-acter did Jesus exercise? (Compassion and for-giveness.)

• ( John 12:20, 21) What opportunity did theGentiles receive when the Jews rejected Jesusas their king? (The Gentiles were accepted andreceived the right to become the children of God.)

• ( John 12:24-26) What does it take to be sub-mitted to God’s will? (Dying to ourselves as akernel of wheat does before it can spring to newlife.)

Concluding emphasis. Only one seed dies toform a new plant and produce many new kernels. What does this tell us about spiritual life anddeath? (If we “die” to ourselves and live a selfless life,God can produce much living fruit in us.)

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSIONThe Bible records Jesus mostly walking onfoot or riding in a smelly fishing boat. AsKing of the Jews, He could have demandedupper-class transportation, but He chose thelowly donkey to carry Him into Jerusalem. Heidentified with the humble and poor in spirit.

Have you ever ridden on a young horse? Doyou think it would be easy to ride a colt that hadnever been ridden before? Jesus rode intoJerusalem, not on a horse—which was an animalused in war—but on a young donkey. Kingsoften rode donkeys in times of peace to showthat they were not at war. The prophet Zechariahhad prophesied that the Messiah, the King ofKings, would ride into Jerusalem on a lowly don-key. When Jesus did this, He showed that Hewas humble and peaceful. The fact that the colt

had never been ridden before and yet submittedto Jesus, reminds us that Jesus is sovereign overHis creation.

Why did Jesus tell His disciples to quietlybring the colt? He may have done this becausethe Jewish leaders had said that anyone confess-ing Christ would be put out of the synagogue. They had also commanded that if any man knewwhere Jesus was, he should report His location tothe rulers. But the incident also shows Jesus’ om-niscience—that He knows all things—for He

Today we travel in cars, trucks, buses, and air-planes. What kind of car might Jesus chooseto drive today? Think of the travel methods ofprestigious officials today. Would Jesus travelfirst class if He were here today? –Based on how Jesus traveled during His time onearth, we would not expect Him to drive an ex-pensive, showy vehicle. If He had come today in-stead of then, His choices of lifestyle and travelwould be similar—He would identify with hum-ble, lowly folks rather than with the rich and self-important.

Why do people so quickly reject others as theJews rejected Jesus?– They have self ish attitudes and self-centered

interests.

In rejecting Jesus as their Messiah, the Jewsmissed a great opportunity. Does lost oppor-tunity ever return?– God is very gracious. He often gives us “re-

turned” opportunity, but we must not use thisgrace as an excuse to delay obedience. We shouldalways take the opportunities God presentswhen we recognize them.

Teacher Notesknew not only where the colt would be, but alsothat someone would question the disciples aboutuntying it.

The crowd showed some commendable behav-ior. For one thing, they recognized that Jesus wasKing. When they put their clothes on the animaland spread them on the pathway before Jesus, they were humbly recognizing Him as their king.Matthew 21:8 says that they cut down branchesfrom trees and laid them in the path—also an act

done to honor a king. In verse 38 of today’s read-ing, the crowds shout, “Blessed be the King.”

The crowd also did well to rejoice in Jesus’ministry: “They praised God with a loud voicefor all the mighty works that they had seen.”They expressed their desire for God’s peace andglory: “Peace in heaven, and glory in the high-est.” Furthermore, they identified Jesus correctly, not only calling Him King but also “son ofDavid” and “the Prophet” (Matthew 21:9, 11).

They seemed to recognize His triumphal entryinto Zion as His right as the King of Israel.

As the Messiah, Jesus was God’s AnointedOne. He always obeyed His Father, and He wasthe rightful King of Israel. In fact, some day, everyknee is going to bow and every tongue will con-fess that Jesus is Lord. If only Israel and her lead-ers had acknowledged Jesus as their Messiah! Ifthey had bowed their knees to Him that day, theythemselves would have been saved and the futureof their nation would have been quite different. What a tragedy that they rejected Him!

Pharisees in the crowd told Jesus to rebukeHis followers for praising Him, but Jesus’ re-sponse showed that there absolutely had to bepraise to Him at that moment. This is what Hemeant when He said that if the people fell silent, the stones would cry out and praise Him.

The Mount of Olives rises about 100 feet(30.5 m) above eastern Jerusalem, so Jesus wouldhave had a good view of the city from the Mount. He would have seen the gleaming white stonewalls of the city. It would have seemed natural forJesus to be preoccupied with His upcoming suf-fering as He entered Jerusalem. Instead, He wasmoved by the suffering His people would endureas a result of rejecting Him. The Bible records two

times that Jesus wept—at Lazarus’s grave and overthe city of Jerusalem. He longed to bring His peo-ple peace and to be their Saviour. He was willingto forgive them for rejecting Him. He was willingto put their good above His own. But they wouldnot receive forgiveness from Him; so Jesus weptout of a deep yearning for His people’s welfare.

The Jewish nation lost their greatest opportu-nity. God had visited them, but they were blind toHis Messiah. As a nation they turned away, re-jecting God’s greatest gift. Because of this rejec-tion, Jerusalem would be destroyed in A.D. 70 bythe Roman general Titus.

After Jesus entered Jerusalem, some Greeksasked to see Him. Knowing ahead of time thatHis death would also benefit the Gentiles, Jesusspoke of His life as a kernel of wheat that, whenit is planted, dies, and then sprouts to give birthto a new plant. That new plant then producesmany more seeds. Likewise, Jesus needed to die inorder to provide new life for sinners.

Jesus went on to say that this principle appliesto us too. When we submit our will to God’s will,we die to our own will and desires. Even goodthings that we desire must be abandoned if theyare not God’s will for our lives. God calls us tosubmit our will to His in everything.
