Your colours

The soft cool impact of your palette is friendly and inviting. It is has impact without being brash or noisy. When searching for outfits to wear keep in mind the principles of softness with a cool undertone. Black is out of place in this palette as much as you may want to wear it. Charcoal and deepest navy will be your staples.

Personality and Contrast

We've covered value contrast, the final piece of the puzzle is how your personality affects your contrast levels.

Your personality can be a 'rule breaker' or 'rule stickler' one - if you are dramatic, rebellious or high energy (life of the party), no matter what your outward appearance, you may enjoy breaking the rules and wear high contrast if you appear to be low, or the other way round. If you are very quiet, shy or low energy (wall flower), you may prefer to wear more subtle combinations of colour and value as you don't want to stand out from the crowd, even if you have high contrast colouring.

Investment BuysInvestment buys are the items that you want to remain in your wardrobe for as long as possible, as opposed to the tops and sandals that you are happy to wear for a season or two. Investments buys are most likely to be coats, jackets and trousers or suits, but could also be a fabulous cashmere jumper or a bag. These colours don’t date and are a great substitute for black.

Best Light Neutrals - Soft White, Oyster, Rose Beige, Grey Beige, Stone, Light Blue Grey, Light Grey

Best Dark Neutrals – Greyed Navy, Charcoal, Teal, Gunmetal, Grey Green, Rose Brown, Taupe

How to Wear BlackIt is very tempting for those who have subtle colouring to wear bright or strong dark colours thinking it will enhance their colour (black being one of them). In fact the opposite effect occurs. Strong, dark and bright colours are too overpowering for the subtle, understated colouring of the Enigmatic. There are colours in your profile that will harmonise well with Black, especially the stronger ones. Add a light neutral to soften the overall look. All the light neutrals of your profile enhance Black.

Best Glasses Frames and LensesChoose frame colours that are from your metals range – silver, platinum, pewter or rose gold, or a metal frame in a light cool colour such as blue, mauve or even a soft raspberry. If choosing plastic frames try blue based colours, black can be a bit harsh on you. The colour of the lens for sunglasses must be cool, blues and greys.

Shoes and AccessoriesThe colour of your bag should work with your wardrobe, so avoid black, try brown, taupe or one of your other neutrals instead.

Shoes should blend with your trousers and socks unless you are very tall, when you can wear a shoe in your hair colour.

Remember ~ colours make you alive

Do not be fooled into wearing what works for everyone else.

Your personal choices are inherent to your colouring and

your personality. Discover ways to make yourself shine. The answers are hiding in your

swatch.

Page 7: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

Suggested shades for colouring your hair:

To combat the ‘mousy’ look that most will complain about, add ash or champagne highlights. This always looks better than an overall colour change. The mousy natural colour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone.

Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

As we’ve draped you, we’ve probably found some colours that really make your eyes ‘pop’ out and become a stronger colour and more noticeable – these colours are your eye enhancers and are great colours to be worn when communicating with people at a close distance – from meetings to dates as they make people want to look you in the eye. We will have marked these colours on your swatch – they are usually blues and greens for blue and green eyed people, and often deep reds and browns for brown eyed people. Your eye enhancing colours work well in suits, jumpers, shirts, jackets, tops.

Your skin enhancing colours are often in the reds/pinks as they bring out the colour of the blood below the surface and make you look healthier and less pallid. Hair colors (including highlights and variations) are ideal for coats, suits, pants, shorts, shoes, and boots.

Personal Contrast

Your contrast level is as important as your colour choice. Earlier in this booklet your contrast level will be outlines for you. Here is how you make it work for you.

High Contrast’ Level

A high contrast exists when there is a lot of difference between the colours. This is created by combining dark and bright or light colours. These are found by working and combining the middle with the beginning and ending of your swatch.

Medium Contrast’ Level

Medium contrast is the easiest contrast level on the eyes and the friendliest. It is great for wearing when you are a team player, on a first date, when you want to appear warm and friendly. To find your medium contrast combinations in your swatch divide your ‘colours into 3 - light medium and dark. Then do the same for your neutrals. If you are wearing ,light option team it with a medium. Or if you are wearing a medium option form your swatch team it with a deep or dark selection. Don’t go to your extremes.

Low Contrast’ Level

Low contrast is your background colour selection. This is what you wear when you don’t want to be noticed. Great for meeting or events when you are playing a support role. To create this level of contrast wear colours next to each other or only separated by a few chip or opposite from each other on your swatch. By that I mean. Light neutrals with light colours. Medium neutrals with medium colours and darker colours or neutrals together.

Wearing Colours which are not favourable

• There will always be occasions when you have something you love which may not

be your perfect colour. If you follow these set of rules you will always look great.

• Keep it as far as possible from your face

• Wear another colour between it and your skin

• Keep the less than perfect colour to only 10% of your entire outfit

• Wear it below your waist (it will have no impact there)

• Any colour of medium intensity is easy to wear

• Use your ideal level of contrast in the outfit you are wearing to lessen the impact

• Show more skin, your skin will always suit you

How to know if the colour is not right for you• People comment on the garment more than how well you look

• You look tired

• You look ill

• You look older than you are

• You feel uncomfortable in it

9

Page 10: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

Using Your Colour Swatch Rather than tossing your entire wardrobe out from here on in make sure, everything you buy harmonises with the colours in your colour swatch.

To know if a colour is right, place your swatch near to the colour/s you are looking at. If the colours feel in balance, that is they will flow together, there is a natural feeling or the colour is within the same tones but not exactly the same shade then it is right. There are a multitude of colours available to you. Your swatch is just a guide to the feeling you are looking for.

Take care of all of your orphans. Find the clothing in your wardrobe which co-ordinates with nothing else or only one piece. If it is in your colour group look for more clothing choices to work with it. Any garment which co-ordinates with 2-3 other pieces you already own is a must buy. It is a wise investment.

Medium intensity colours will co-ordinate the easiest with other options in your colour group. These make an ideal choice for trousers, skirts and jackets.

When co-coordinating you can always wear a neutral with a colour or even two neutrals with a colour just remember to put them together in your level of contrast as outlined earlier in this booklet.

Applications with your swatchNot all the colours in your palette may work well worn as a single colour above the waist, so you may need to wear additional colours or garments to add greater interest. For example, whilst your palette may contain light neutrals, these may not look the best in a block of colour on your upper body, however, if teamed with a scarf, necklace, or additional interest colours from your palette, it may work well.

For a slimming effect wear a ‘column of colour, ie carry the same colour through from head to toe; the colour line adds height and has a slimming effect.

When selecting ‘patterned’ garments, ensure 90% of the colours are from your colour

swatch; 10% of the colours in the pattern can be different

10

Have you noticed how the stripes here create a different effect the wider or closer in colour they are to each other?

To Look Taller

Keep your colours top and bottom similar. When wearing stripes keep the colours in similar tones or again closer

To Look Thinner

Finer fabrics are ideal.

Notice how the first image the cable knit in the jumper is thickening. The v-necked fine

jumper is the more flattering and the final image with the patches on the shoulders and

elbows brings the focus up to and out from the shoulders giving the illusion of broader

shoulders.

11

Page 12: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

To Look Fuller or Bigger

The opposite of the previous rules apply. Lighter warmer colours ‘approach’ us so they will always emphasis the area they are covering.

Using Colour to Make the Right ImpactLight and Bright colours ADVANCE, whilst Dark and Muted colours RECEDE. To be able to use colour most effectively, you need to know what the advancing and receding colours are ‘saying’. Each colour direction contains both advancing and receding colours. When combined they create a balance and can be used to offset one another.

ADVANCING RECEDINGActive PassiveAnalytical IntuitiveAnimated QuietAssertive SubmissiveDirect SubtleDramatic ReservedExtrovert IntrovertExuberant CalmForceful GentleIntense RelaxedRealistic Idealistic

When combining colours in your outfit, choose the receding colours of your colour direction for the part of the body you wish to minimize, and the advancing colours for the part of the body you wish to highlight. Red, orange, yellow and yellow-greens of any colour direction will advance more than the green, blue/green, blue and violet of the same wheel.

A dark colour will always appear darker when placed near a light one. The dark colour makes the light colour look lighter, creating more of a contrast, a colour break and focal point than if it were place alongside a colour closer in intensity.

How to Look AuthoritativeHigh Contrasts – wear a white shirt (your white) and dark suit when making a presentation to potential clients. The high contrast sets of your face and frames you in an authoritative way. The stiff fabric of a structured shirt and suit also lend you an air of authority.

Wear colours that are ADVANCE – such as your brightest and warmest colours such as red, orange, yellow and yellow-based greens with your darkest colour to provide a high contrast.

A light suit (pictured right) does not convey authority. You will find it hard to get respect wearing colours this

light all over.

12

Page 13: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

How to Gain ConsensusIf your purpose is consensus, wear something approachable in medium softer shades. Powder blues, light greens and other soft shades show off your human side. Their message is that you’re a team player who can empathise. Team these colours in a shirt, with a medium suit or other garment. Don’t wear very dark colours when you’re after consensus. Use your RECEDING colours – the cooler colours from your spectrum such as blues, purples and teals. Consider the fabrics too – a softer less stiff fabric is also more approachable.

Wearing Bright ColoursChoosing to wear loud colours is a definite statement. You have to have the position and bearing to carry this off. Don’t try this if you are a junior in your office. If you have a strong message and need everyone to know who you are then go for bright colours – you mustn’t be a shy and shrinking person to wear this.

To keep people’s attention when making a presentation to a large audience, wear some red, but not too much as it can make people feel uncomfortable. A small amount will focus attention on you and what you have to say.

Using Colour to Look Taller and SlimmerColour reflects or absorbs light – and how each colour appears on you is dependent on your personal colour direction. There are ways to use colour to enhance your appearance, and ways to fool people into thinking that you’re taller and slimmer than you really are.

1.Wear your palette of colours, this way your look will harmonize with your colouring and make you appear taller and more slender as it creates a face focus.

2.Wear similar colours head to toe, don’t break up your body with unnecessary changes of colour, as this shortens and widens you. If you wear a lighter top and a darker bottom, your legs will look longer and focus will be drawn up to your face. If you wear a darker top and lighter bottom, your legs will look shorter and your upper body minimized.

3.Blend your shoes to your trousers. Shoes that don’t match trousers will shorten you and draw attention to your feet.

4.If you don’t want to blend shoe colour and want to look taller, such as with denim, look for shoes in a darker colour than the denim.

5.Wear your medium to dark neutrals which will have the most receding and slimming affect.

6.Wear lighter, brighter colours up near your face which will draw attention there.

7.Wear your eye enhancers – the more you draw attention to your eyes, the less we are inclined to scan the rest of your body.

13

Page 14: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

8.Colours that are not related to your palette, will draw attention to themselves (and this includes black if it’s not your colour) and therefore force the gaze onto your body and away from your face.

Colour CombinationsHere are just a few possible colour combinations to consider when dressing – this list is by no means comprehensive, but may help you think outside your normal colour combining when dressing.

Black – mixes with anything –with a bright colour – a dynamic statement, all black – authoritative, intimidating or creative, with white speaks authority. Mix it with red to be bold, with camel to be classic, with grey to look industrious or a houndstooth pattern to look refined. Whilst fuchsia is dynamic, mint green is pensive and sky blue is amiable. Black goes with everything – but remember that how you wear black is dependent on your level of contrast and the effect you’re trying to achieve.

Grey – looks great with most other neutrals. Try it with black, brown and other shades of grey. Just be sure the colours are distinct enough to complement each other without blending together and looking muddy. It also works well with colours from violet through to yellow. Grey mixed with a light pink or salmon shade is seen as sociable, a striped cotton shirt is amicable, blue oxford shirt is conservative and a top in red is energetic.

Beige or Stone mixes well with almost anything – very much like black – bright stripes would create a mischievous effect, pale blue would look thoughtful, whilst a monochromatic neutral striped shirt would look refined, grey would look traditional and red corduroy would look rugged.

Navy – mix it with red and white for a chic look, mauve or violet work well, as does teal or pink – it goes with pretty much anything. Pink looks preppy, a mid blue will create animation, red and white creates a nautical look whilst blue stripes is upbeat.

Pink, coral and peach work well with navy, light grey, brown or beige.

Mid to light blue, lavender and lilac are gorgeous in combination with shades of grey as well as brown and taupe.

Teal works well with taupe, navy and brown.

Red works with almost everything – from camel to navy, charcoal to white.

Burgundy can be teamed well with brown, navy, grey, charcoal and even a light pink.

Matching Ties to ShirtsUnless you’re wearing a white shirt, which means you can pretty much choose any colour tie to wear that tones with your suit, try and ensure that one of the colours in your tie is the same as, or a lighter or darker hue of your shirt.

For example – wearing a blue shirt, pick a tie that has a blue and burgundy stripe. Or a white shirt with a burgundy check – pick a tie that picks up the burgundy in the check of the shirt.

Suit Shirt and Tie combinationsAll plain

This is the easiest combination. A plain suit, with a plain shirt and a plain tie is the easiest combination to work with.

Two patterned elements with one plain – or one patterned element with two plain elements.

The hardest of all is three patterns together.

Colours in BusinessThe Psychology of ColourBlack/Grey

Black can portray an air of authority and many wear it as a uniform for business.

Wearing black from head to toe can also be seen as intimidating. It’s not a friendly or approachable colour. This is why priests wear black, as do vampires.

Positives: Dignified, cosmopolitan, mysterious and firmNegatives: Solemn, antagonistic, arrogant and Proud

19

Page 20: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

Wearing grey – whether charcoal, medium grey or pewter is often a great alternative to black, and is softer on the complexion and not as ageing and harsh.

Positives: Reputable, calm and harmoniousNegatives: Unexceptional, adequate and detached

White

White denotes purity, freshness and hygiene. When talking white – we’re talking the white that suits you – from bright white, to soft white, cream, milk or ivory.

Everyone needs white in their palette, as a contrast against other colours from your palette. Wearing white in a textured fabric will often soften its appearance. Linen and silk, for example, are rarely pure white, although cotton can be.

White is an ideal colour to wear in hot climates as it reflects light – the challenge is keeping it clean and fresh-looking.

Positives: Pure, immaculate and modernNegatives: Clinical, uninteresting and bland

Blue

Blue, the colour of logic and loyalty activates the mind. The most trusted colour in Western society.

Blue conveys trust, peace and order – it could be considered safe. Dark navy is often associated with authority and law and order; many police forces use navy for their uniforms. Navy is also a great alternative for suiting rather than black, whether a deep French navy, or a marine navy (which suits most warm complexions), navy can be flattering, yet still convey authority.

Medium shades of blue such as cornflower, lapis and sapphire, are all great colours to brighten up your wardrobe throughout the year. The lighter shades of blue such as powder blue, bluebell and sky blue, make wonderful colours for dress shirts.

Positives: Composed, scrupulous, reliable, dependableNegatives: Safe, Orthodox, Exact

Pink

Wearing pink suggests gentleness and empathy; it can be seen as soft and feminine. Because pink is seen as a feminine colour, some men see it as a weak colour and it is advised not to wear when negotiating with other men.

The right pink is a great colour to wear when you’re feeling off colour, as it gives a flattering lift to your complexion, but the wrong pink for you will make you look florid.

Positive: Delicate, sympathetic and feminineNegative: Trivial, insignificant and sissy

20

Page 21: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

Purple

In its pure form, purple shows creativity as well as indicating sensitivity.

The purple family runs from softest lavender to deepest damson. It is a great alternative – and a more exciting one – to black and navy. Beware that its creative signal does not compromise a situation where you want to appear conformist. Purple is also the colour of spiritualism and meditation. In its lighter forms, the lilacs and soft violets promote a general sense of relaxation.

Many people are shy of purple, but if you’ve never worn it, give it a try and you’ll be amazed at the effect it has on others.

Positives: Unique, perceptive and sereneNegatives: Juvenile, uninterested and pre-occupied

Red

Red is the colour of energy. Wear red and you will feel confident and in control. It says you’re dynamic and forward thinking.

The red family has many variations from raspberry to tomato, so getting the undertone right is crucial. Is it warm (yellow-based) or cool (blue-based)?

Wearing red will bring excitement to your day. It is the colour of stimulation, showing a sense of exhilaration but also suggesting a demanding character. It is a great colour to wear at the end of the week when your energy level might be flagging.

If you’re giving a speech a little red in your outfit (such as your tie) will help to focus attention on you, too much can irritate the audience.

Positives: Passionate, energetic and optimisticNegatives: Opinionated, bold and impertinent

OrangeOrange connotes playfulness, warmth and vibrancy.

If you want to call attention to yourself wear orange (warm colour groups only, cool groups can’t wear orange). But beware orange can sometimes indicate cheapness

One should be very careful with orange, especially with bright hues. It can be a very sharp, annoying colour, so only wear in small quantities.

Positives: Animated, dynamic and creativeNegatives: Shallow, flighty and volatile

Yellow

Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter.

While it is considered an optimistic colour, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult colour for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused, it’s best worn as part of a patterned fabric, rather than as a block colour on its own.

If you need to carry, excite, cheer up or surprise wear a little yellow as it helps you attract attention. You shouldn't use yellow too extensively if you don't want to be the centre of attention.21

Page 22: Contentscolour actually works well with their muted, rich colours. The greying process is kind to you and you would do best to leave well alone. Eye, Hair and Skin Enhancing Colours

It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Wear in small doses in business situations.

Positive: Animated, carefree and VivaciousNegative: Fickle, skittish and unstable

Green

Green, the colour of plant foliage conveys a sense of calm and reassurance.

When wearing green, whether olive or lime, or anything in between, you show creativity and imagination. It was once thought to be unlucky, but in the world of fashion green brings another dimension to the wardrobe. With all its various shades, green may be used for virtually any garment, from a winter coat to a fun pair of shoes.

With green, it is particularly important to understand the undertone and to know whether you are better in a warm (yellow-based) green such as moss or apple-green, or the cool (blue-based) green of spruce or sea-green.

Green is also a great colour to wear when you want to be considered approachable and friendly.

Positive: Strong, persistent and reliableNegative: Obstinate, resolute and rebelliousBrown

Brown, the colour of the earth, is a great colour to wear when you’re in relaxed mode.

The brown family comes in many guises: chocolate, coffee, mahogany and golden, to name but a few. Brown denotes a friendly, down-to-earth, though serious, attitude. We are often told that brown is ‘this season’s black’, and it provides an excellent alternative for those with warm colouring, especially when you want to appear less threatening. Brown may be considered boring when worn on its own, but mixing it with other colours can bring it to life and it could become a staple of your wardrobe.

Make sure you choose the correct shade for you by checking where it’s a warm brown – such as milk chocolate, or a cool brown shade such as deep rose brown.

Positives: Friendly, welcoming and receptiveNegatives: Mundane, dated and pragmatic

Beige

The family of colours is a great substitute for blacks and browns in summer.

The beiges run from stone, to camel, via taupe, pewter, cocoa and oyster. All of these tones are non-threatening, friendly and approachable; they are excellent when you want people to open up to you. They are ideal colours for anyone who works with people, for example in counselling, human resources and market research.

If your colouring is Deep, beige generally needs to be worn together with contrasting colours.
