Fibre Optic Systems

Introduction

The single-mode fibre is mainly used in telecommuni-cations because of its low attenuation and wide band-width.

The gradient index fibre and the step fibre with theirlarge core diameters are chiefly used as communica-tion cables in industrial applications due to their easyhandling and relatively low costs. The link lengthranges from several meters to several kilometers.

Mounting of connectors for gradient fibres is achievedby the use of adhesive.

For POF1) or HCS®2) fibres, the crimping techniqueeases the connector attachment. With the advancedHARTING quick assembly components, POF1)-cablescan be mounted without the need of special tools.

HARTING F.O. systems are designed for gradientindex fibres with a core diameter of 50 and 62.5 µm aswell as for 200 µm (HCS®2)) and 1 mm (POF1)) stepindex fibres.

The typical operating wavelengths are 660 nm (POF1),HCS®2)), 850 nm (GI; HSC®2)) and 1300 nm (GI).

Apart from applications in the field of telecommunica-tions, fibre optic technology is of great importance inthe industrial market sector.

In telecommunications there are requirements for:• High transmission capacity• Low cable attenuation• No crosstalk

The features are also required in the industrial sectoralong with the following major considerations:

• Zero susceptibility to electromagnetic interference

• Electrical insulation between transmitter andreceiver

• Small cable diameter

Fibre optic communication works by pulses of light. When feeding them in at one end of the fibre opticcable, the pulses are passed to the other end by totalinternal reflection.

Total internal reflection occurs at the boundary layerbetween core and cladding by virtue of the differentvalues of optical refractive index (n) between the twomaterials (n cladding less than n core).

There are three different types of optical fibres:

Fibre Optic Systems

System TechniqueElectrical signals to be transmitted by fibre optic cablemust be converted into pulses of light and vice versa. For this purpose there are electro-optic convertersavailable as transmitter (T) and receiver (R) modules.

Simplex

A simplex link is defined by the signal transmission ina single direction. Data transmission in two directionsis performed in a duplex link. With these configura-tions, point-to-point links can be realized. Usuallyseparate fibres for each direction are used.

Duplex

The interconnection of multiple units in a communi-cation system can be done in different configurations. At the optical line signals are passed through eachparticipant only in one direction. Each participanttransmits the received optical signal to the nextstation (repeater functionality). If the optical line isclosed to a ring-structure, bi-directional communica-tion between the participants, is possible.

Optical line, optical ring

The linear duplex bus is the combination of twocontrary lines. Each participant has two transmittingand receiving modules passing received opticalsignals to the opposite direction and vice versa(repeater functionality).

Linear duplex bus

In a star configuration a central point is the connectionmode for each participant. A transceiver module foreach participant is equipped at this point. Each starshaped split can be enlarged with the a.m. configura-tions.

Fibre Optic Systems

Dimensioning of F.O. Transmission SystemsFor reliable operation of a F. O. data transmission system itis essential that the transmitted optical signals arrive at thereceiver with sufficient amplitude. The incident powershould at least exceed twice (+ 3 dB) the value of the mini-mum sensitivity of the receiver. Otherwise, the inherentnoise of the system may result in increasing randomlydistributed transmission errors in the data transfer. There-fore, in system design the power budget of the optical pathhas to be checked. The following aspects have to be con-sidered:

Optical power output of the transmitterThe optical power generated by the LED does mainlydepend on the applied forward current.Typical power levels coupled into the core are50/ 125 µm GI fibre: 80 µW at

200/ 230 µm Si fibre: 250 µW 850 nm980/1000 µm Polymer fibre: 600 µW 660 nm

Specific attenuation-coefficient of the fibreThe specific attenuation of optical fibres depends on thewavelength applied and is specified in dB/km.Typical values for glass-fibres are50/ 125 µm GI fibre: --- 3 dB/km at

200/ 230 µm HCS: --- 5 dB/km λ = 850 nmfor Polymer fibre:980/1000 µm: (PMMA) -- 0.2 dB/m λ = 660 nm.The fibre loss usually contributes to the highest amountto the overall transmission index of the optical link.

Additional interconnections in the cable systemInterconnections in the optical link create some further at-tenuation for the travelling optical signals.Typical insertion loss isfor a spliced connection ≤ 0.3 dBfor a connector-set 0.8 ... 1.5 dB,depending on the type of fibre and the connectors ap-plied.

Sensitivity of the optical receiverDC-coupled optical receivers, commonly used, with SI-diodes as receiving elements show typical minimumsensitivities of≤ 3 µW at 850 nm (glass fibre systems)≤ 5 µW at 660 nm (Polymer fibre systems).

Temperature dependence and ageing of LED, thermalinfluence on cable lossThese items should be taken into account with an amountof 2 dB. Thus, in total a system reserve of 5 dB has to beconsidered in the link power budget.

Examples

a) Glass fibre system (λλ = 850 nm)

Link budget analysis:TransmitterP1 = 80 µW = – 11 dBm

power coupled into fibre coreCable Loss: 2.5 km x 3 dB/km = 7.5 dBLoss per connector set ST = 0.8 dBSystem reserve (3 dB + 2 dB) = 5.0 dBTotal system losses: 13.3 dB

Incident power at receiver: P4 = – 24.3 dBm = 3.7 µWThis satisfies the required minimum-conditions ≥ 3 µW* The injection- and decoupling-loss at the transmitter- and

receiver-ends of the fibre has not additionally to be takeninto account as they are already included in the givenpower ratings of these elements.

b) Polymer fibre system (λλ = 660 nm)

Link budget analysis:TransmitterP1 = 600 µW = – 2.2 dBm

power coupled into fibre coreCable loss: 60 m x 0.2 dB/m = 12.0 dB2 connector-sets F-SMA (2 x 1.5 dB): = 3.0 dBSystem reserve (3 dB + 2 dB) = 5.0 dBTotal system losses: 20.0 dB

Incident power at receiver: P6 = – 22.2 dBm = 6.0 µWThis satisfies the required minimum-conditions ≥ 5 µWOmitting the additional interconnections in the cable (heree.g. the 2 F-SMA connector sets) results in larger maximumtransmission distances.

Media Converter for Bus Systems

Converter for RS 485-based bus systemsThe HARTING media converter RS 485 and RS 485MB+ are suitable for point-to-point links or linearduplex bus systems between units with an electricalinterface according to the EIA RS 485 Standard.Typical applications can be found in data aquisitionand process automation via fieldbus systems.

For point-to-point links converters with one electricaland one optical port are used (version HD).

For optical bus systems with several participants atthe beginning and the end of the bus structure HDconverters are used. As optical intermediate devicesconverters with two optical transceiver ports (MDR-version) are installed. Several optical linear duplex bussystems can be connected to each other by the link ofthe electrical ports of the converter. Thus complex busstructures can be realized.

Each participant in this bus system can communicatewith each other. This bus structure is capable of multi-master operation. The link length between two con-verters depends on the converter and fibre used.Distances of several kilometers are possible. The totalsystem’s extension can be realized depending on thenumber of converters used.

Functional principle of the converter: received electri-cal data is directly transmitted from the optical ports.Similarly, received optical data is converted intoelectrical signals and with MDR-versions, reconvertedinto optical signals to be transmitted from the oppositeoptical port. Due to physical effects of the electro-op-tical conversion, the signal is distorted. The maximumnumber of units in a bus system is limited by the max-imum tolerable puls-width distortion in the system. These converters are normally protocol transparent.

Application for an optical linear duplex bus system.
