March 2020
Now when the primrosemakes a splendid show,(And lilies face the March-winds in full blow)… .put on, to welcomespring, their best attire .William Wordsworth

Spring brings colour into our gardens and the countryside . With the lengthening days, spring also brings colour and sunshine into our lives .
Hindus in India, and around the world, celebrate the coming of spring with the festival called Holi . It is a riot of colour . Elephants parade in finery, and people throw vivid coloured powder so everyone gets covered in a delightful mess .
Holi this year is on 9th and 10th March . It is a time for forgiving and renewal – a time to celebrate the coming of spring .

A Light Exists In Spring by Emily Dickinson
A light exists in springNot present on the yearAt any other period —When March is scarcely here .
A colour stands abroadOn solitary fieldsThat science cannot overtakeBut human nature feels .

March Words
It waits upon the lawn,It shows the furthest treeUpon the furthest slope you know,You feel it speaks to you .
Then as horizons stepOr noons report awayWithout the formula of soundIt passes and we stay —
March is a time for celebration in Wales and in Ireland . 1st March is St David’s Day . He is the patron saint of Wales . There will be plenty of golden daffodils, a Welsh symbol, on show by then, along with a dragon on the flag.
Then on 17th March it is St Patrick’s Day . In Ireland and around the world, it is a day of music, song and dancing . The green shamrock will be much on display .
Many countries have a patron saint . England makes less of St George’s Day on 23rd April, but flags still fly from church towers . Later in the year, Scotland celebrates St Andrew’s Day on 30th November .

No woman would be without a handbag – even these days . Where else is there to put a purse and a comb, lipstick and a powder compact, tissues and a handkerchief? It holds the house keys and often the car keys too .
Rummage around in the bottom of a handbag and there will be old train tickets, receipts, and a faded shopping list or two . There might be safety pins and a rain hat, a bus pass, a notebook and pen .
HandbagsHandbags grow old gracefully . If the handles wear through, it is such a wrench to have to buy a new one . The old, familiar handbag is always the most comfortable .

No wonder the daffodil is a symbol of Wales . On St David’s Day, the daffodils are often in their prime . They put on such a lovely, golden show .
It is not just the birds that get busy in early spring . Gardeners, too, get out and about . There is the vegetable plot to dig over . The ground needs to be made ready for the seeds and beans to be sown in the next few months . Early parsnips are already sown, and the onion bed is prepared .

Meanwhile, more seeds are sown in the greenhouse . Seed potatoes are set up to chit in a light, airy room . When their strong green sprouts show they will be ready to plant .
The Department Store
8
Every large town had one . Cities had lots of them . They were like an entire high street all in one building . They are our department stores . There are fewer of them now, but they are still a shopper’s paradise .
It might be a big chain like Lewis’s or Beale’s, or a city store such as Whiteley’s or Gamages . It could be a fashionable outlet: Fenwick’s in Newcastle or Jenner’s in Edinburgh . You might go to the Army & Navy, to Binns or to Dingles . It might be large and glamorous like Harrods, or small and friendly like Wetherell’s in Selby .

Go in through the big glass doors . Be wafted along by the smell of perfume and cosmetics . Try on a dress, or pick up a piece of crockery in homewares . Take the caged lift to the next floor. Pick out a shirt and tie in the Gentleman’s department . Then up the stairs to the hallowed hush and dry air of carpets and furniture . Or take the elevator to millinery and haberdashery . Does that hat suit you?
Then it is down into the basement for lighting and children’s toys . Snap up a bargain in the Sales, and treat yourself to a new scarf . Listen for the ring of the tills and the singing of the pipes and wires bringing your change .
Finally, go to the restaurant on the top floor. Sit and relax with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake . And watch the world and the people go by .

It Happened in March
One of the most famous department stores of all is Selfridges . It opened to the world on 15th March 1909 . Ever since then its flagship store on London’s Oxford Street has been a mecca for shoppers from all corners of the globe .
The store was the brainchild of Harry Gordon Selfridge . He was an American who had
already run successful stores in Chicago . He saw that London needed a big, bright department store .
He was a brilliant showman and advertiser . He soon made Selfridges a great attraction, and one of the greatest shops in the world .

A shopping trip is not complete without a purse . In it you can keep your loose change, notes and cards . It may be worn, but it snaps shut with a reassuring click .
It can be fiddly at the till trying to root out the last few coppers. But you would not want to be without your trusty purse .
