The Orange Ball is an organised socia l occasion of the Orange Order, Incorporating nlu.J l, wng, music and dance, and in the pas t he ld yearly in the lodges of the Order in the North of Ire land. It now takes place only in a few C€'n lres in Down. Antrim illld Derry, and is prac ticall y unknown to the genera l public. After a series o f ri tual gestures and a . further procession , another Orange song is sung and the ceremony ends. There fo llows lurther soci al dancmg.

The Origin o f the Orange [\a ll is obscure. I t was certainl y III ellCis tence in the last centur y. Some of the songs used date I from the earl y 1800s, and some I of the emblems may 1::0 back to the inception of the Order in 1795 . The ceremony IS not part of the formal or ganisation of the Order , and high-ranking orrlcer s arc often UIl<lWiir e of its existence. Procedure and symbolism borrowed

SINGING AT MILTOWN

At th is year's Wi lhe C lancy Summer School the school's !irst Singing Worbhop took place, tucked away in the old West C la re railway slation , now part of the Central Hote l annexe. The idea of a s inging workshop fIllght conjure up ideas o f hideous uniformit y, for instance , a choir o f singers burs ting forth on Mi ltown Ma lb.ly , all performing in perfect unison a song in Connem<lra seannOs. This was far from being the case.

The aim o f the workshop was to bring about an appreciation of tradit ional song and of the fea tures which make it traditiona l. The mornings began wilh a ta lk on the hist orical bac"gro\md of Irish songs with taped examples played by Tom Munnelly. Fal se assumptions , such as the Arabic or unique nature of Iri sh song, were debunked, while Virginia Blall"enhorn deplored the pervasive modern trend of ' inyis lble guit ars ' in unaccompanied song. A great diversi ty ol types of song was covt:re d: Iri sh, macaronic , i\nglo~rrish love songs, ba llads common with t he Eng li sh tradition.
