Role of CPCM
CPCM defines a set of technologies for protecting content after it has been acquired by the consumer
CPCM is not used in transmission to the home
CPCM is not tied to a specific service provider
Slide 4
CPCM is intended for use on commercial content only
Home videos etc. are neither protected nor blocked by CPCM
Role of CPCM
CPCM can acquire content from Free-to-air, Conditional Access (PayTV) or DRM systems
Once under CPCM, the content is controlled by the CPCM devices within agreed constraints
CPCM can be implemented in any type of device
Slide 5
CPCM can be implemented in any type of device
CPCM is complementary to other content protection mechanisms, and can be used in parallel with them

HOW CPCM WORKS
How CPCM Works
Establishes Trust between devices
If required, establishes an Authorised Domain between multiple devices
Establishes secure communications
Encrypts the content using a secret keyNOT required for some Free-to-air content
Slide 12
Puts Rights information and key into Content License
Securely delivers Content License with protected content
Decrypts content using Key, and allows use according to Rights

CPCM AS A FRAMEWORK
CPCM as a Framework
The DVB CPCM specification provides a toolkit, with which various devices and services can be built
It defines those elements that are necessary for devices to securely transfer content and maintain rights
CPCM does not define how they are implemented
Manufacturers decide:
Slide 28
Manufacturers decide:
Which CPCM functions are necessary in each of their products
How to present CPCM information in their User Interface
CPCM as a Framework
There are many areas where hooks have been left for future additions, and for adaptation to specific business needs
Manufacturers and service providers adopting CPCM have the opportunity to experiment with many new content management scenarios

CONCLUSION
Conclusion
CPCM is a fairly straightforward specification
CPCM supports many current and future usage scenarios
CPCM will allow consumers to do more with their content

Remote Access
Portable Devices

CPCM is complementary to other Content Protection mechanisms such as Conditional Access and Digital Rights Management
CPCM is flexible for the future needs of Consumers, Broadcasters and Content/Service Providers
Recognition
Recognise special contribution to CPCM by the following individuals:
Chris Hibbert (Disney)
Giles Godart-Brown (BSkyB)
Paul Szucs (Sony)
