The lectures will be held in Manor North’s Activities room (third floor) from 9:45 to 10:45 AM, each Thursday through Oct 31st. Led by Dr. Mark Draper: Nearly 20 years into the 21st century there is nothing dividing Protestantism more than views concerning sexuality and gender. Almost every mainline denomination has experienced some form of schism that in some way has been influenced by conflicting beliefs over LGBTQ issues. In addition, many evangelical and non-denominational churches are being forced to wrestle with these issues. To provide some perspective about the current climate, this talk will discuss the ways in which Christians throughout their 2000-year history have read their sacred texts and interpreted them concerning homosexual practice and gender. This session will evaluate the history of biblical scholarship, hermeneutics, and exegesis, as well as the ways in which culture and traditions have influenced the church as it pertains to these issues. Our presenter is Dr. Mark Draper, who recently began as Electronic Resources Librarian and professor at Lancaster Bible College. He has served as Assistant Director of the Niebuhr Center for Faith and Action at Elmhurst College; and as Librarian, Professor of Church History, and Director of Online Learning at Evangelical Seminary. Sermon Here Am I Pastor Janet Saddel “Images of Faith” Sermon Series

*Affirmation of Faith A Modern Affirmation No. 885

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:

We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children’s good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen.

*Gloria Patri Majesty, Worship His Majesty No. 176

Majesty, worship his majesty; unto Jesus be all glory, honor, and praise. Majesty, kingdom authority, flow from his throne unto his own; his anthem raise. So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus. Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus, the King. Majesty, worship his majesty, Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all kings.

*Doxology Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow No. 95

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

8:15 ONLY Invitation to The Lord’s Supper Acolyte

* Confession and Pardon

Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(All pray in silence.)

Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Prayer after Communion

Gracious God, we rejoice in these gifts of bread and wine. As you have cleansed us by your blood, purify our hearts with your refining fire and fill us anew with your Holy Spirit, that we might grow ever deeper in our love of you. Thank you for assuring us of your goodness and love. May we know this day the joy of being one with you and one with each other as members of Christ’s body. This we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today we celebrate a milestone on efforts to pay down our church’s debt! Last month we were able to retire our bank loan, eliminating more than $13,000 per month in principal and interest

payments. We still retain about $1.1 million in the form of notes held by church members, which do not require monthly payments, only periodic interest payments. After our successful capital

campaign last year, we are on track to retire these notes in two years. This image of First Church is believed to be an architect’s rendering dating to the late 1940s, in conjunction with

previous rebuilding efforts, after the catastrophic fire of 1946 which gutted the sanctuary; First Church has a history of overcoming great financial challenges!
