ACCESSIBLE ART SPOTLIGHT: EXCEPTIONAL ART AT MAIN LINE ART CENTERSince 1997, Main Line Art Center’s Exceptional Art classes have provided creative

experiences for children, teens, and adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities. In these classes, visual art is used as a vehicle for the development of language, cognitive abilities, fine and gross motor skills, and socialization. This year’s theme is Story Books and Fine Art. Creative projects inspired by the books read will explore a variety of mediums, such as painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and textiles.

Look for Exceptional Art students’ work on display this spring at our annual Accessible Art Exhibition at the Art Center and within community partner locations, such as Ludington and Marple Libraries.

Funding is needed for Exceptional Art student tuition assistance, and volunteers are always appreciated in Exceptional Art classes.

ART STARCAROL STIRTON-BROAD Carol Stirton-Broad’s love affair with Main Line Art Center began over 20 years ago when she began working as a Clay Technician in 1994. A graduate of Tyler School of Art, Carol’s studies in ceramics and mosaics have taken her as far as Italy and Scotland. Now she’s a staple at the Art Center, teaching popular classes for kids and adults in mosaics and glass fusing, including in our Accessible Art Programs for children, teens, and adults with disabilities, and at-risk youth. What people might not know is that Carol started her career working as a N.Y.C. Police Officer assigned to the photo unit! She took photography courses throughout high school, college, and beyond, but realized that this medium wasn’t working for her anymore. She says that, “photography wasn’t about my voice, but ceramics was.”

Narrative is an important part of Carol’s work, because art can easily express her voice. This interest in personal narrative is a driving force behind her passion to teach others. In the studio, she’s helped countless students find their voice and channel their thoughts into a work of art. Her mission to help everyone “achieve their personal artistic vision” extends beyond the walls of the Art Center too. Whether she’s creating murals throughout Montgomery County, facilitating programs with teens through TheVillage (formerly known as Presbyterian Children’s Village), or working with the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia (she’s a Founding Member), her passion and enthusiasm for art and teaching is infectious.

Carol loves working at Main Line Art Center because of the focus on helping everyone in our community. “Main Line Art Center has always supported me and encourages that support in the people who come here.”
